Dependence upon the natural environment is redefining the business relationship between ecological, economic, and social systems. In addition, the major market forces of diminishing natural resources, extreme transparency, and increasing social expectations are reshaping a new sustainability path for companies. This empirical investigation explored the phenomenon of sustainability in small to mid-sized enterprises, focusing on the link between innovation and ecological sustainability. In addressing the research questions, an Eco-Sustainability Conceptual Framework was developed and applied to a sample of small to mid-sized enterprises. In addition, the development and use of an Eco-Scorecard helped to identify key performance indicators for measuring …
Producing Science That Gets Used By Coastal Communities: What Funders Should Do To Link More Science With Decisions, Kalle Matso
Producing Science That Gets Used By Coastal Communities: What Funders Should Do To Link More Science With Decisions, Kalle Matso
Doctoral Dissertations
Many reports have noted that a significant portion of coastal science that is funded to help society address resource management issues does not actually link to decisions. Here, I report on 13 case studies involving new tools and science to help diverse decision makers better protect coastal resources. My qualitative analysis indicates that the programs' efforts to better link science with decisions have had varied results: some encouraging and some less so. In contrast, all 13 project case studies clearly confirm that the funding programs could have done more to link science with decisions. These case studies, combined with this …
Cross-Correlation Based Performance Measures For Characterizing The Influence Of In-Vehicle Interfaces On Driving And Cognitive Workload, Zeljko Medenica
Cross-Correlation Based Performance Measures For Characterizing The Influence Of In-Vehicle Interfaces On Driving And Cognitive Workload, Zeljko Medenica
Doctoral Dissertations
Driving is a cognitively loading task which requires drivers' full attention and coordination of both mind and body. However, drivers often engage in side activities which can negatively impact safety. A typical approach for analyzing the influences of side activities on driving is to conduct experiments in which various driving performance measures are collected, such as steering wheel angle and lane position. Those measures are then transformed, typically using means and variances, before being analyzed statistically. However, the problem is that those transformations perform averaging of the acquired data, which can result in missing short, but important events (such as …
Mean Force Structure And Scaling Of Rough-Wall Turbulent Boundary Layers, Faraz Mehdi
Mean Force Structure And Scaling Of Rough-Wall Turbulent Boundary Layers, Faraz Mehdi
Doctoral Dissertations
The combined roughness-Reynolds number problem is explored from the perspective of ordering of terms in the mean momentum balance. Existing mean velocity and Reynolds shear stress data from zero pressure gradient, rough-wall turbulent boundary layers are used to clarify the nature of the leading order balances across the boundary layer. These existing data are augmented by data from a judiciously chosen set of experiments performed at the University of New Hampshire. These low speed, Laser Doppler velocimetry based experiments were performed over three types of roughnesses. Their purpose is to clarify the trends found in the existing data sets.

"The first topic proposes a rigorous method of moments(MoM) solution to evaluate the shielding effectiveness of a metallic enclosure with apertures on top wall by formulating a pair of coupled mixed potential integral equations (MPIEs). Application of Ewald transform to the computation of Green's function in the cavity yields fast convergence of series summation. Good agreements with a commercial tool, EMC studio, have proved the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
The second topic deals with prediction of electromagnetic interference radiation from components or interconnects in a printed circuit board by using convolution of the half-space Green's functions and the equivalent …
An Improved Dipole-Moment Model Based On Near-Field Scanning For Characterizing Near-Field Coupling And Far-Field Radiation From An Ic, Zhenwei Yu
Doctoral Dissertations
"Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) problems are critical issues in wireless platform design. The accurate noise model of integrated circuits (ICs) is needed to help designers to diagnose and predict RFI problems. In this dissertation, an improved IC radiated emission model based on near-field measurements is proposed. The regularization technique and the truncated SVD method are employed together with the least square method to calculate the dipole moments from the near-field data. This dipole model has clear physical meaning: the electric and magnetic dipoles represent the voltage and the current in the circuit, respectively. One application of this dipole model is …

Multilevel power electronic converters are the current industry solutions for applications that demand medium voltage, reasonable efficiency, and high power quality. The proper operation of these types of power converters requires special control, modulation methods, and capacitor voltage regulation techniques. Both developing capacitor voltage regulation methods and addressing their associated issues with such fall within the primary focus of this dissertation. In this dissertation an investigation was conducted on the capacitor voltage regulation constraints in cascaded H-bridge multilevel converters with a staircase output voltage waveform. In the proposed method, the harmonic elimination technique is used to determine the switching angles. …
Compressive Sensing For 3d Microwave Imaging Systems, Hamed Kajbaf
Compressive Sensing For 3d Microwave Imaging Systems, Hamed Kajbaf
Doctoral Dissertations
"Compressed sensing (CS) image reconstruction techniques are developed and experimentally implemented for wideband microwave synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging systems with applications to nondestructive testing and evaluation. These techniques significantly reduce the number of spatial measurement points and, consequently, the acquisition time by sampling at a level lower than the Nyquist-Shannon rate. Benefiting from a reduced number of samples, this work successfully implemented two scanning procedures: the nonuniform raster and the optimum path.
Three CS reconstruction approaches are also proposed for the wideband microwave SAR-based imaging systems. The first approach reconstructs a full-set of raw data from undersampled measurements via …

Measuring The Orientations Of Hidden Subvertical Joints In Highways Rock Cuts Using Ground Penetrating Radar In Combination With Lidar, Adnan Mohammed Aqeel
Doctoral Dissertations
"Mapping discontinuities in rock cuts and measuring their orientations is crucial in assessing the stability of rock masses. This can be done usually using manual methods such as scanline or advanced techniques such as LIDAR. However, these methods are used only to map exposed discontinuities which may cause underestimation for slope stability. Accordingly, ground penetrating radar (GPR) has been recently used to detect such hidden discontinuities.
The used 400 MHz monostatic GPR antenna was significantly able to detect and map hidden subvertical joints within 4 m depths in five sandstone highways rock cuts and within 3 m depths in two …

The objective of this investigation is to evaluate different methods to add cable information to the near-field data for far-field estimation. The investigation is carried out using numerical experiments in EMCoS EMC studio, which is a commercial MoM (Method of Moment) tool for EM simulation. Measurement results from a test structure are …
Modeling Carbon Sequestration In Transition Zone To Optimize Storage Potential, Fang Yang
Modeling Carbon Sequestration In Transition Zone To Optimize Storage Potential, Fang Yang
Doctoral Dissertations
"Shallow aquifers are potential candidates for carbon sequestration because of their wide distribution and low injection cost. Injected CO₂ in a shallow region segregates into two zones according to CO₂ phases within the initial reservoir pressure and the maximum bottom hole pressure: gas zone and transition zone. Transition zone is a better option because of favorable CO₂ properties. This work investigated the CO₂ storage potential in transition zone using the compositional simulator CMG-GEM and a design of experiment software iSIGHT. First, it addressed the basic characteristics of CO₂ sequestration in transition zone, and then modeled CO₂ injection with simultaneous water …
Global Homotopy Continuation And Stability Analysis: Optimal Application To Chemical Engineering Design, David Anthony Harney
Global Homotopy Continuation And Stability Analysis: Optimal Application To Chemical Engineering Design, David Anthony Harney
Doctoral Dissertations
"The design of chemical engineering process equipment routinely necessitates the solution of large systems of non-linear equations. The processing speed of standard desktop computers have allowed for equation-oriented process simulators to become commercially viable. For a fully equation-oriented simulator to be competitive with standard iterative solvers, a robust and reliable non-linear equation solver is required and standard Newton methods fail to provide the necessary reliability.
Homotopy continuation methods have been proposed as a way to greatly expand the domain of convergence of the process simulator's equation solving algorithm. This research expands upon existing homotopy continuation algorithms, investigates bounding algorithms, corrector …
