A Qualitative Study Of Prayer As The Pastor's Work, Kenneth Lee Schander Jan 1994

A Qualitative Study Of Prayer As The Pastor's Work, Kenneth Lee Schander

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

This study is an attempt to understand the pastor’s perspective regarding prayer as a part of his/her work. The nature of the pastor’s work has been debated throughout the history of the Christian church without consensus. This uncertainty regarding the role of the pastor is increasing. In the confusion over what constitutes the pastor’s job, his/her call to be a person of prayer has been largely lost sight of. A critical need exists to understand prayer as a priority for pastors.

Method

The study is divided into two sections. The first section is an overview of the relevant biblical …

An Attempt To Increase The Communion Attendance At The Willowdale Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Adam R. Bujak Jan 1993

An Attempt To Increase The Communion Attendance At The Willowdale Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Adam R. Bujak

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Attendance at the Lord’s Supper is often lower or much lower than at the regular Sabbath services. The purpose of this project was to increase the attendance at the Lord’s Supper by generating a deeper understanding of this sacrament among a particular congregation.

Method. My first task was to discover the perceptions of my members regarding the theology and the practice of the Lord’s Supper. A comprehensive survey was prepared and administered. The data was collected and analyzed as reported in Part One. The empirical data show a number of factors that contribute to low attendance at the Lord’s …

Seventh-Day Adventist Tentmakers--The Key To Evangelizing Restricted-Access Countries And Unentered Areas, Stenio Gungadoo Jan 1993

Seventh-Day Adventist Tentmakers--The Key To Evangelizing Restricted-Access Countries And Unentered Areas, Stenio Gungadoo

Doctor of Ministry Projects

In 1990, the Seventh-day Adventist Church set itself the goal of establishing a presence in each of the 2,313 unentered population segments of one million people. This task, which it intends to finish by the year 2000, constitutes a great challenge that can be met on the condition that the right approach is used. This project report suggests tentmaking as a viable strategy for reaching that goal.

Part One of this project lays the foundation for the involvement of lay people in tentmaking ministries by analyzing:

1. The gospel commission in biblical and theological perspectives

2. The biblical and theological …

Nurturing Sabbath Observance In The Lawrenceburg And Pulaski, Tennessee, Seventh-Day Adventist Churches, John Delano Riggs Jan 1993

Nurturing Sabbath Observance In The Lawrenceburg And Pulaski, Tennessee, Seventh-Day Adventist Churches, John Delano Riggs

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Sabbathkeeping practices vary widely fran congregation to congregation and among Sabbathkeepers individually. This study attenuated to evaluate the Sabbathkeeping practices of two congregations before and after a series of sermons and a discussion session and to effect a change in these practices as compared to those of the control church, which did not have the benefit of the sermons and discussion.

Method. Sermons were developed that followed the theology of Sabbath observance as presented in chapter 2 of this project and were delivered to the test churches. A questionnaire was administered twice to the two test churches, before and …

The Development Of A Course In Biblical Theology Based On A Book-By-Book Approach To The Bible, Daniel Duda Jan 1992

The Development Of A Course In Biblical Theology Based On A Book-By-Book Approach To The Bible, Daniel Duda

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The purpose of this project was to develop and undergraduate college course in Biblical Theology. Part One establishes a theoretical background by exploring the biblical and theological foundations.

Chapter 1 states the purpose, justification, and limitations of the project. Chapter 2 begins with a historical review of the discipline. Following J. Gabler's definition, Biblical Theology became a purely historical and descriptive discipline which delineates the theological views of the biblical writings and the communities of their origin, explaining "what it meant" in biblical times. This brought an emphasis on diversity and development within the Scripture.

The discipline split into separate …

An Evaluation Of The Concept Of Seminary In Mission With Reference To The Latin American Adventist Theological Seminary, Juan Millanao Orrego Jan 1992

An Evaluation Of The Concept Of Seminary In Mission With Reference To The Latin American Adventist Theological Seminary, Juan Millanao Orrego

Doctor of Ministry Projects

This study dealt with the Seminary in Mission (SIM) concept held by the Latin American Adventist Theological Seminary (LAATS), its current perception, and its degree of application in the five LAATS campuses. The creation of LAATS by the South American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church in 1979 resulted in a reorganization and maximization of theological educational resources, including those at the undergraduate level. The SIM concept, adopted by LAATS at that time, indicates that faculty will carry out on-campus academic activities as well as off-campus field work with students on a weekly basis. The implementation of this concept …

Towards Understanding Distinctive Seventh-Day Adventist Preaching, John Harold Hobart Mathews Jan 1992

Towards Understanding Distinctive Seventh-Day Adventist Preaching, John Harold Hobart Mathews

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

As early as 1957 there has been concern by some church members that Seventh-day Adventist preaching has lost its uniqueness or as some have said, "the old Adventist ring." Are SDA preachers losing the church's mission in their preaching? That assertion continues to be a voice within Adventism.

Method

A study from the Bible, writings of Ellen G. White and other church publications helped me understand the mission of the SDA church and preaching's relationship to that mission. An analysis of sermons by J. N. Andrews, W. A. Spicer, and H. M. S. Richards, Sr. demonstrate how leading SDA …

A Strategy For Lay Involvement In Urban Evangelism And Geographical Advance In The Territory Of The North Mexican Union Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Mexico, David Velazquez

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The Global Mission thrust initiated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) in 1990 envisions a specific length of time for all the world to be covered with the SDA message. An important challenge of Global Mission is reaching the inhabitants of the cities. This project report contains a strategy for lay involvement in urban evangelism.

Part One of this project attempts to provide a theoretical framework by developing a theological perspective of the city, as shown in four areas:

1. An analysis of the phenomenon of urban growth around the world, as well as in Latin America and Mexico is …

Theological Education In Context: A Pilot Extension Program For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Rwanda, Robert G. Peck Jan 1992

Theological Education In Context: A Pilot Extension Program For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Rwanda, Robert G. Peck

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

One of the most important concerns that presents itself to the Adventist Church in Rwanda is how to adequately cope with the rapid growth of new members. There are too few pastors equipped to care for the growing membership. It was the purpose of the present pilot project to design a strategy that would provide theological education and training for pastors currently employed and training for those mature church leaders who are motivated to improve their leadership abilities and skills.

Method

Theological Education by Extension (TEE) was the proposed solution to the problem. A two-tier approach was suggested. The …

A Proposed Strategy For Evangelizing The Hindus Of The Republic Of Trinidad And Tobago, Wynall F. Kerr

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Substantial investments been made in the evangelization of Hindus in Trinidad, but have resulted in little success. The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Trinidad has not yet developed a well-defined approach to assist pastors and laity in evangelizing Hindus. The purpose of this study was to develop a biblically informed strategy of evangelism that can be used in designing appropriate evangelistic methods.

Method

The New Testament and other selected literature have suggested a strategy and methods of evangelism that were used for evangelizing particular peoples or groups of people, and these might inform the mission of the Seventh- day Adventist …

A Biblical Preaching Strategy For The Ministers Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Central Dominican Conference, Ramon Araujo C. Jan 1987

A Biblical Preaching Strategy For The Ministers Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Central Dominican Conference, Ramon Araujo C.

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The problem of preaching in the Central Dominican Conference seems to be one of sermon content. Weaknesses in hermeneutical principles as well as rules applied to the biblical sermon can be detected. Even when preachers quote the Bible and try to explain the message, the biblical text is not properly discussed or explained. This situation results in poor sermon content. To correct this anomaly, this study provides a guide on Biblical Preaching to help the minister produce a better sermon to feed the church.

Method

In order to investigate the content of sermons and the principles applied to preaching …

The Development And Implementation Of A Training Program For Local Church Officers Designed To Clarify Leadership Roles And Teach The Concept Of A Servant Leader, Jim E. Mamanua Jan 1984

The Development And Implementation Of A Training Program For Local Church Officers Designed To Clarify Leadership Roles And Teach The Concept Of A Servant Leader, Jim E. Mamanua

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Frequently local church officers are not effective in their leadership roles because they are not prepared to serve the church. In addition to increasing their skills and competencies, they need to understand clearly the function of their position. Local leaders also need to learn to participate in the decision-making and goal setting for the local church.

Project. In response to the problem stated above, this project studied the biblical and theological foundations for ministry. It vas ascertained that ministry is a shared service (diakonia) rendered by all members of the body, in cooperation one with another. Leadership in the …

A Proposed Training Program For Seventh-Day Adventist Ministerial Interns In The Scandinavian Countries, Rolf H. Kvinge Jan 1982

A Proposed Training Program For Seventh-Day Adventist Ministerial Interns In The Scandinavian Countries, Rolf H. Kvinge

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Wherever the Seventh-day Adventist Church with its professional ministry desires to improve its effectiveness, the matter of field education for interns as well as theological education is of importance. Somehow, guidelines and formative education for the ministers in the field has been lacking in the Scandinavian countries. Due to lack of orientation and the absence of supervised education in the practice of ministry, ministerial interns have often felt inadequate when taking up their own responsibilities for the work in their national environment. For the development of a field practicum that may change the situation stated above, this study has been …

The Transfer Of Ministers In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church Of The German Democratic Republic And Its Effects On The Minister's Service And Family Life, Johannes E. Mager

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Transfers from one pastoral district to another are part of the life and work of ministers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Every transfer deeply affects all aspects of his life, and that of his family. It also influences his relationship with the administrators of the church and touches the respective congregations. The aim of this study was to find out (1) whether transfers have solely a pragmatic character, or whether they also carry biblical-theological implications; (2) whether transfers do encumber interpersonal relations and, if so, what possibilities exist to solve these tensions …

A Strategy For The Presentation Of The Principles Of Christian Stewardship To The Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In South America, Roberto R. Roncarolo

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

In the SDA Church in South America there are deficiencies in three clearly defined aspects of the educative phase of stewardship campaigns: (1) in the unilateral presentation of the doctrine of stewardship, (2) in the methods and procedures used in that presentation, and (3) in the persons that receive the benefits of said presentation. In this project, the problem of how to improve the efficiency of stewardship education is discussed.

Method

The purpose of this research is to develop and evaluate a series of Christian stewardship meetings that differs from the series now in use in South America in …

A Study And Analysis Of The Bible Lands Travelogue-Archaeological Approach In Public Evangelism, Victor A. Schulz Jan 1979

A Study And Analysis Of The Bible Lands Travelogue-Archaeological Approach In Public Evangelism, Victor A. Schulz

Doctor of Ministry Projects

To investigate the method of a selected number of evangelists who are using the Bible lands travelogue-archaeological approach, to ascertain what they consider as the most significant and seemingly effective characteristics of their methods was the purpose of this project. Then, incorporating these findings, to develop an approach that may help the author and other evangelists to use this method effectively in public evangelism, has been the problem under investigation in this study.

The project was organized into three main parts. The first searches for a justification for a Bible lands travelogue approach. The second analyzes the method as it …

The Contextualization Of An Understanding Of Biblical Preaching Into The Jamaican Situation, Vassel George Kerr Jan 1979

The Contextualization Of An Understanding Of Biblical Preaching Into The Jamaican Situation, Vassel George Kerr

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Preaching has always been an important function of the Christian church. It is the generating source of the Christian faith, and Paul struck the mark when he declared, "Faith comes by hearing" (Rom 10:17). Martin Luther burnished that mark, making it a hallmark of the Reformation: "Faith is an acoustical affair." The contemporary preacher cannot lose sight of the centrality of the Protestant pulpit. The biblical Keryxon ton logon (preach the word), is a mandate, a command, not a temporary injunction or a recommendation. Not only should the preacher proclaim the Good News, he or she1 is to make it …
