A Study Of Open Space Schools, Carol Ormiston
A Study Of Open Space Schools, Carol Ormiston
Dissertations and Theses
By the spring of 1972 Beaverton School District had five open space schools in operation and three others under construction. These schools are built without separate, individual classrooms. Space is more flexible and can be used in a number of ways. Open space buildings provide the setting for a new kind of teaching and learning process.
Within the Beaverton School District, the Department of Administrative Services was requested to provide information regarding the operation of the open space teaching and learning process. As a result a plan was developed for a descriptive study of some aspects of open space as …

Sickle Cell Anemia : A Psychosocial Study Of Attitudes And Effect, Sharon Ann Goddard, Marian Genita Gilmore
Dissertations and Theses
This research study was focused on two broad areas of exploration. The first area deals with the identification of various factors affecting a family when a family member has the anemia or symptomatic form of sickle cell disease. Data obtained from a personally administered questionnaire (Form A), enabled the researchers to determine if genetic counseling had been offered and received, and if this counseling was considered helpful by the respondents. In addition to this, data was collected on several demographic variables, including sex and age of patient, family income, religion, education, ethnic group, living arrangements and occupation, and response to …
A New Inquiring System For Technology Transfer And Its Role In Planning And Policymaking, Kishandutt Jaydayal Sharma
A New Inquiring System For Technology Transfer And Its Role In Planning And Policymaking, Kishandutt Jaydayal Sharma
Dissertations and Theses
The importance of technology transfer to produce structural change in developing regions has been well established. However, most previous transfers to developing regions have been unplanned or triggered by actions rather than decisions. Most previous inquiries have been based on unidimensional, sectorial and mostly economic views of technology transfer; this author believes these to be inadequate representations of the transfer process. This dissertation proposes a new inquiring system for technology transfer; one which emphasizes a multidimensional viewpoint of the technology transfer process. Further, this dissertation claims to make three unique contributions: 1. a new hierarchical structure for examining the technology …
An Analysis Of The Effects Of Background Variables On Attitudes And Policy At The Bonneville Power Administration, Philip George Millam
An Analysis Of The Effects Of Background Variables On Attitudes And Policy At The Bonneville Power Administration, Philip George Millam
Dissertations and Theses
The question is asked whether or not background, education, and training of middle and upper level bureaucratic personnel affects policy outcomes. The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) serves as the agency examined. A written questionnaire sent to a random sample of BPA executives sought data on background variables with the intent of making comparisons. Most BPA executives are found to share very similar education and training backgrounds – namely, engineering studies at Northwest state universities. Also, attitudes measured are found to be more similar than different on most issues for the agency as a whole. This phenomenon is explained in terms …

A Follow-Up Attitudinal Study Of Selected Groups In The City Of The Dalles Toward The Community Attention Home, Landon Gilstrap, Joyce Larson, Janice Page
Dissertations and Theses
Prior to the opening of the Attention Home in August of 1971, a survey was conducted by David Clitheroe and Garrett Long to determine what specific attitudes local groups in the community had about the Attention Home. Their study represented the first part of a two part study. It established the baseline data on the community attitudes toward the Attention Home prior to the opening of the home. These attitudes will be compared with the attitudes after one year's operation of the home in order to assess what attitudinal changes, if any, have taken place between the first and second …
Synthesis Of Uranium Fluorosulfates And The Group Vi B Difluorophosphates, Larry Mccain Emme
Synthesis Of Uranium Fluorosulfates And The Group Vi B Difluorophosphates, Larry Mccain Emme
Dissertations and Theses
Some reactions leading to several anhydrous Uranium fluorosulfates through the use of fluorosulfonic acid or peroxydisulfuryl di-fluoride have been studied. It was found that HS0F can oxidize uranium 3metal to the +4 state or the +2 state depending on the reaction conditions. The synthesis of the tan solid; U(S03F)4 and the pale green solid thought to be U(S03F)2 were prepared in this manner. It was found that S206F2 can also oxidize uranium to yield the green solid U(S03F)3. S206F2 was …
Color Perception In Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels, Robert F. Cooley
Color Perception In Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels, Robert F. Cooley
Dissertations and Theses
Squirrels appear to be unique among sub-primate mammals in being able to see at least some colors. A readily available Oregon squirrel species, golden mantled ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis), which has not previously been tested under laboratory conditions for color vision, was subjected to color discrimination testing in a Skinner box. On the basis of recent physiological tests of color reception capacity and behavioral tests of color discrimination response in closely related species, it was predicted that this species should be able to discriminate blue, green and possibly yellow, but not red. Three experiments were conducted. The first, a pilot …

The P.S.U. Educational Center is an attempt to facilitate the access of Portland's inner city residents to higher education. It is an attempt to overcome the bitterness, defeatism and mistrust that many of these people feel toward education. In its four year history the Center has grown rapidly. The number of people served by the Center per term has risen from 15 in 1969 to 1,300 in 1972. Course offerings have increased from 5 to nearly 30. The Center offers both college credit and other types of courses at nominal fees. An evaluation of the Center--based in part on a …
Continuity Of A Traditional Social Pattern: The "Man-Patron" Relationship In Contemporary Northeast Brazil, Patricia Ellen Thorpe
Continuity Of A Traditional Social Pattern: The "Man-Patron" Relationship In Contemporary Northeast Brazil, Patricia Ellen Thorpe
Dissertations and Theses
Northeast Brazil is a region characterized by economic poverty and human misery. Poor ecological conditions contribute to the nature of the dilemma, but another factor in the apparent cultural stagnation of the Northeast, may be the persistence of values and social practices traditionally aligned with the colonial sugar plantation system. Thus, this thesis represents an examination of the continuity of a given pattern, the man/patron relationship. This pattern is a contemporary parallel to the master/slave relationship which was the key to understanding of the social system of the colonial period. An historical overview reveals the nature of the traditional system, …
Lesson For America? England's Development Areas, Thomas G. Current
Lesson For America? England's Development Areas, Thomas G. Current

The work is a descriptive and comparative study of the British program for economically lagging regions of the country. The author's special interest was local participation in the central Government activity. Secondary sources of information on local aspects were in short supply, and the writer relied upon interviews and unpublished documents obtained on a visit to England to supplement published material. His extensive experience in the American development program also was utilized.
The study offers a classification of elements in the programs of the two countries and identifies comparable trends which have carried further in the British experience. The study …
A Gold Dream In The Blue Mountains: A Study Of The Chinese Immigrants In The John Day Area, Oregon, 1870-1910, Chia-Lin Chen
A Gold Dream In The Blue Mountains: A Study Of The Chinese Immigrants In The John Day Area, Oregon, 1870-1910, Chia-Lin Chen
Dissertations and Theses
More than one hundred years have passed since the Chinese laborers first landed in this country in the mid-nineteenth century. Yet their history remains cloudy. This phenomenon is quite understandable if one considers the facts that most of the laborers were illiterate, did not have the ability, and never intended, to speak for themselves. It is true that many scholarly works have been published, but few were written by Chinese historians. As a matter of fact, Chinese scholars are unaware that a small number of their countrymen played a strange, pitiful role in American history. The published works reflect the …
Kinetics Of The Cope Rearrangement Of 3,4-Diphenylhexa-1,5-Diene, Harlan Albert Jerome Berg
Kinetics Of The Cope Rearrangement Of 3,4-Diphenylhexa-1,5-Diene, Harlan Albert Jerome Berg
Dissertations and Theses
Kinetics investigations of the thermal Cope rearrangement of meso- and dl-3,4-diphenylhexa-1,5-dienes were undertaken in order to gain information about the transition states for these reactions by determining the appropriate enthalpies and entropies of activation. Of particular interest were the activation parameters for the meso compounds' rearrangement as it represents the only known example in which both four- and six-centered transition states are of comparable energy.
Kinetics of the dl isomers' rearrangement in the temperature range 90-110° were determined using 5 X 10-5 M solutions of the olefin in heptane contained within sealed Pyrex ampules. Extents of reaction …
The Use Of Junior Historical Fiction In The Classroom, Darlene Pelinka
The Use Of Junior Historical Fiction In The Classroom, Darlene Pelinka
Dissertations and Theses
The use of American historical fiction in an eighth grade social studies or language arts class has not been fully explored, so its literary and social science value is questionable. In order to establish its worth and methods for its use, research into desirable 1iterary goals for adolescents, implications and purposes of historical fiction in general and for youth in particular, a bibliography of novels, and an evaluative survey of specific novels written for youth needed to be done.
The research indicates that some critics believe that most junior novels have little to offer youth and that they are poorly …
Measurements Of The Mössbauer Fraction In Chromium, B. Frederick Brace Jr.
Measurements Of The Mössbauer Fraction In Chromium, B. Frederick Brace Jr.
Dissertations and Theses
Precision measurements of the Mossbauer fraction of Fe57 in chromium were made using the black absorber technique over a range of temperatures from 78K to 792K. Because of uncertainty in corrections at high temperatures, only the data collected from 78K to 600K was used in analyzing the results.
The f values were analyzed in terms of a Debye approximmation. This analysis of the data yielded a theoretical fit which was based on two adjustable parameters (a Debye temperature of 438K and an anharmonicity parameter of 2 x 10-4K-1).
The f measurements were also analyzed using a …

Black Studies As An Agent Of Social Change On The Structural Level At Selected Colleges And Universities, Vincent Van Davis
Dissertations and Theses
In a relatively short period of time American higher education has witnessed the development of numerous black studies programs and departments. These new academic endeavors have been instrumental in producing structural changes in the institutions of higher education. Recently higher education has attempted to assess the progress of black studies programs and departments within their structures. This has been done with some attempt to assess the past of black studies as well as project the future of black studies within higher education.
Due to the hurried developmental process of black studies programs, which led to the establishment of black studies …

The Relationship Of Written Expression To Self Concept In Primary Children, Anna Lou Case
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis, the outcome of nearly three years of preparation, including study, development of procedures, trial and observation, was begun in an attempt to answer the following questions: How may original writing among elementary pupils be motivated successfully? Can positive feelings about self be promoted to a measurable degree as a result of emphasizing individual oral and written expression?
Although much thinking and evaluating occurred during the three years, the experimentation and results reported here are limited to the work accomplished and findings obtained during the third year. The twenty-six children involved in this study were third-year elementary pupils, whose …
Johann Adam Moehler: The Method Of Historical Theology, Christina Maria Crose
Johann Adam Moehler: The Method Of Historical Theology, Christina Maria Crose
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis is a study of Johann Adam Moehler's critical theology as an achievement in the nineteenth century's quest for a historical methodology. As the first Catholic theologian to apply a critical-historical analysis to the development of doctrine, Moehler is important as both the theologian and as a German historian.
As the theologian, Moehler's efforts to discover the essential meaning of Christian doctrine led him to conclude that doctrine develops within a human context of experience, namely, the Catholic Church. This development of doctrine is possible given the organic nature of the Christian community and its relationship to the divine. …
Reminiscence, Disengagement, And Morale In Old Age, Barbara Brown Hardy
Reminiscence, Disengagement, And Morale In Old Age, Barbara Brown Hardy
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to test two hypotheses concerning reminiscence in old age. Reminiscence has been found to be an adaptive mechanism relating to freedom from clinical depression and to a reduced discrepancy between present and past self-concepts in the face of an experimental social threat (Mc Mahon and Rhudick, 1964; Lewis, 1971). Disengagement theory (Cumming and Henry, 1961) proposes that reminiscence is adaptive because it is a defense mechanism which protects the individual from decreasing physical capacities and lack of reinforcement from society.
Effects Of Certain Linguistic Parameters Upon The Responses Of Preschool Subjects To Specific Dichotic Listening Tasks, Peggy J. Weber
Effects Of Certain Linguistic Parameters Upon The Responses Of Preschool Subjects To Specific Dichotic Listening Tasks, Peggy J. Weber
Dissertations and Theses
Listening, as a communication skill, is an essential factor in the normal language development of the' child. Until recently, however, there has been very little research conducted concerning the linguistic parameters that influence the ability to listen. Thus, this investigation was designed to study the effects of two linguistic parameters, construction and semantic constraints on the verbal responses of preschool children in a dichotic listening task.
Fifteen children, between the ages of 5-3 to 6-8, were presented with four dichotic listening tasks consisting of 80 stimuli, (40 sentences and 40 pseudo-sentences). The children were asked to report the message delivered …
The Effects Of Training At Two Specified Intensities Upon Heart Rate Response To Submaximal Exercise, Gordon Leverne Noraine
The Effects Of Training At Two Specified Intensities Upon Heart Rate Response To Submaximal Exercise, Gordon Leverne Noraine

Forty-six college men served as subjects in one of three groups: a jogging, or moderate intensity, training group, a running, or high intensity, training group, or a control group. All subjects were pre- and post-tested on the Astrand Bike Ergometer Work Test where working heart rates were measured and recorded. The two training groups participated in at least thirteen training sessions between these testing days, in which two miles were covered at the correct intensity level for each subject at each training …
An Investigation Of Temporary Threshold Shift Among Helmeted Motorcycle Riders, Alamander Hicks
An Investigation Of Temporary Threshold Shift Among Helmeted Motorcycle Riders, Alamander Hicks
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the present study involved the investigation of the significance of wind noise as a contributing factor toward temporary threshold shifts among a select sample of motorcycle riders. Five normal-hearing, helmeted, female subjects were administered pure-tone air-conduction hearing tests immediately before and within 2 minutes after exposure to three noise-related aspects of motorcycle riding. The amount of hearing loss present at 3k, 4k and 6k Hz after each 20 minute exposure condition was recorded as the TTS for that subject. The three conditions consisted of motorcycle noise only, wind noise only and motorcycle and wind noise combined. A …
Moment-Curvature-Thrust Relationships In Hybrid Members, Douglas Wrenn Fiala
Moment-Curvature-Thrust Relationships In Hybrid Members, Douglas Wrenn Fiala
Dissertations and Theses
In order to overcome the difficulties encountered in closed form solutions, moment-curvature-thrust relationships are developed for hybrid and nonhybrid cross sections utilizing an open form method. The use of horizontal sectors permits the inclusion of residual stresses and/or nonbilinear stress-strain relationships, if desired. Theoretical and experimental data are compared. Applications to circular tubes and other cross sections are discussed. Results indicate that open form solutions are feasible for calculating moment-curvature-thrust data. Hybrid cross sections are easily treated by open form solutions.
Mutual Exclusion Between Salmonberry And Douglas-Fir In The Coast Range Of Oregon, Kenneth Ray Still
Mutual Exclusion Between Salmonberry And Douglas-Fir In The Coast Range Of Oregon, Kenneth Ray Still
Dissertations and Theses
One serious problem faced by the forest industry in the Pacific Northwest is poor regeneration of commercial trees on land which is harvested and subsequently dominated by brush species. In Coastal Oregon, salmonberry is one of these brush species. Detailed investigations of field sites indicate that light intensity in the brush stands was low but sufficient for germination and early growth of Douglas-fir seedlings and soil moisture percentages and nutrient levels were high enough to support early Douglas-fir growth. Laboratory tests demonstrated the presence of leachable phytotoxins in the leaves of salmonberry. The hypothesis resulting from this study is that …

In August of 1969 abortion became legal in Oregon. About a year later, in October of 1970, the Planned Parenthood Association in Portland began to offer pregnancy testing and counseling as part of their services. This is a new and separate program which is designed to help women find out if they are pregnant as early as possible (at low or no fee) and provide counseling on the problems connected with unwanted pregnancy. This study is based on a sample of women seeking pregnancy counseling at Planned Parenthood in Portland in the calendar year 1971. During that year about 1,230 …
A Study Of The Characteristics Of Runaways And Their Families In Two Social Agencies, Susan G. Greer, Sarah J. Hertlein, Stephen C. Regner
A Study Of The Characteristics Of Runaways And Their Families In Two Social Agencies, Susan G. Greer, Sarah J. Hertlein, Stephen C. Regner
Dissertations and Theses
Because of the relative uniqueness of the runaway experience as it now exists, minimal current research information is available. It was our feeling that knowledge about runaways, their families, and the social agencies which serve them is essential if significant prevention and treatment for the problem were to be implemented by the community. The purpose and scope of this exploratory research was essentially two-fold; to contribute descriptive information about runaway youth and their families to the community, and to evaluate the current populations of two agencies which service them. An underlying goal throughout the research was to utilize the data …
