Urban Regimes And Downtown Planning In Portland, Oregon And Seattle, Washington, 1972-1992, Mark Richard Bello
Urban Regimes And Downtown Planning In Portland, Oregon And Seattle, Washington, 1972-1992, Mark Richard Bello
Dissertations and Theses
Portland and Seattle are often considered to be divergent in character, partly because civic leadership in each city has a different vision. The adoption of contrasting downtown core plans, projects, and policies in each city allows us an opportunity to understand the nature of each city's regime. As defined by Elkin, an urban regime is the community's governing coalition, those who exercise public authority in a legal sense and those private actors able to act collectively and bring concerted influence to bear.
The time frame for this study begins with the first modern planning document, the 1972 City of Portland …
Thermoregulation In Mice Under The Influence Of Ethanol, Candace Sharon O'Connor
Thermoregulation In Mice Under The Influence Of Ethanol, Candace Sharon O'Connor
Dissertations and Theses
Thermoregulation after acute ethanol, during chronic exposure and during withdrawal from ethanol dependency was studied using genetically heterogeneous (HS) mice, and lines of mice selected in replicate for smaller (HOT1, HOT2) or greater (COLD1, COLD2) decline in rectal temperature (Tre ) after intraperitoneal ethanol. First, HS mice were injected with 20% ethanol in 0.9% NaCI, or NaCI alone during sessions of behavioral thermoregulation in individual temperature gradients (9-38°C). Internal temperature (Tj ) was monitored with implanted telemetry devices. An imaging system recorded selected temperature (Tsel ) within the gradient every 5 sec. Acute 2.25 and 2.60 g ethanol/kg produced significantly …
Nucleation And Heat Transfer In Liquid Nitrogen, Eric Roth
Nucleation And Heat Transfer In Liquid Nitrogen, Eric Roth
Dissertations and Theses
With the advent of the new" high Tc superconductors as well as the increasing use of cryo-cooled conventional electronics, liquid nitrogen will be one of the preferred cryogens used to cool these materials. Consequently, a more thorough understanding of the heat transfer characteristics of liquid nitrogen is required. In these investigations the transient heating characteristics of liquid nitrogen to states of nucleate and film boiling under different liquid flow conditions are examined. Using a metal hot wire/plate technique, it is verified that there is a premature transition to film boiling in the transient case at power levels as much as …
Rapists And Their Parental Relationships, Yaeko Steidel
Rapists And Their Parental Relationships, Yaeko Steidel
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation attempts to find out what associations exist between dysfunctional parental relationships in the childhood of rapists and the rapists' violent acts. It also briefly examines the sociocultural effects which nurture such relationships.
Rape, a crime very prevalent in our society today, is now perceived as an acute expression of men's contempt for and anger against women. The former interpretation of rape as primarily a sexually motivated crime is no longer popular. This dissertation attempts to trace the origin of the rapist's psyche from his dysfunctional parental relationships.
Rare data on rapist's family relations from a recent FBI survey …
Object Parallel Spatio-Temporal Analysis And Modeling System, David Bruce Rex
Object Parallel Spatio-Temporal Analysis And Modeling System, David Bruce Rex
Dissertations and Theses
The dissertation will outline an object-oriented model from which a next-generation GIS can be derived. The requirements for a spatial information analysis and modeling system can be broken into three primary functional classes: data management (data classification and access), analysis (modeling, optimization, and simulation) and visualization (display of data). These three functional classes can be considered as the primary colors of the spectrum from which the different shades of spatial analysis are composed. Object classes will be developed which will be designed to manipulate the three primary functions as required by the user and the data.
Towards Comprehensive Migration Modeling: A Meta-Analytic Approach, Wamukota Francis Wambalaba
Towards Comprehensive Migration Modeling: A Meta-Analytic Approach, Wamukota Francis Wambalaba
Dissertations and Theses
In view of theoretical proliferations in migration studies, there is a need for a more comprehensive approach to migration modeling. A central problem identified in this study was the multitude of potential variables for migration research and the lack of established procedures for selecting among them. Several studies on migration have attempted to answer cornmon migration questions, but with differing variables and therefore divergent conclusions. There is thus a strong potential for misinterpretation by researchers and policy makers. Partial theories of migration have been developed rather than a unified one. This study offers an objective process through which variables may …
Solution-State Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Nmr) Spectroscopic Studies Of The Active Site Of Myoglobins In Various Ligated States: Models For Macromolecule-Substrate Binding And Advancement Of Paramagnetic Nmr Techniques, Sidney Yee
Dissertations and Theses
This work focuses on pigmy sperm whale and horse myoglobins (Mbs), which are distinguished by a single heme pocket residue variant in the CD3 position, when the heme iron is in the +3 oxidation state (i.e. the met form). The strategy employed is as follows: (i) assign heme peripheral protons; (ii) assign the amino acid residues from the heme cavity; (iii) assess the dynamics of ligand binding in the active site by means of hydrogen Iability, solvent isotope effects, and heme-insertion isomer trapping, all by NMR methods. The results of these studies portray dynamic solution structure of the Mb ligand …

Space, Consciousness, And Gender In Colette, William A. Parnell
Space, Consciousness, And Gender In Colette, William A. Parnell
Dissertations and Theses
Colette's desire, to reveal the different levels of difficulties in relationships, results in the creation of three masterpieces, L e Ble en Herbe, La Chatte, and La Vagabonde. Through her characters in these novels, the author exposes the spatial boundaries set by each couple. Also, she concentrates on the maturation of the protagonists. The woman's function in society transforms as she gains personal power, and she becomes self-reliant. Finally, Colette evades sexual stereotyping by introducing the reader to the issues of gender and androgyny. She helps to dispel the sexual myths around the. idea of normal stereotyping. Themes such as …
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study Of Antigen-Antibody Complexes, Including Sequence Specific Assignments And Structural Analysis Of Neurophysin As An Antigen Model, Elisar Jamil Barbar
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study Of Antigen-Antibody Complexes, Including Sequence Specific Assignments And Structural Analysis Of Neurophysin As An Antigen Model, Elisar Jamil Barbar
Dissertations and Theses
The interaction between molecules is essential in a wide range of biological processes. A detailed knowledge of these interactions is necessary for understanding these processes. Among the systems that involve important interactions is the immune system. NMR spectroscopy has a large number of spectral parameters that were used in this work to study antibody-antigen interactions. These same parameters were also used to begin a structural analysis of a medium-sized protein, neurophysin, that has important interactions with neurohormones, and served here as a model antigen. A set of ligands differing in size and charge was designed and used to probe the …
A Validation Study Of Components Necessary For The Professional Development Of School Business Officials, William Henry Dierdorff Iii
A Validation Study Of Components Necessary For The Professional Development Of School Business Officials, William Henry Dierdorff Iii
Dissertations and Theses
A key element of a profession is a formalized training program. School business officials in the United States and Canada face dynamic and complex issues without a standardized training program. This study surveyed a representative group to validate a curriculum model developed by a 1988 task force funded by the Danforth Foundation. Another objective was to increase awareness of the need for an effective training program for school business officials and the most appropriate sources to implement that. As indicated in the analysis, all components of the ASBO/Danforth model were considered important to the parties surveyed. There was no single …
Perceived Administrative Support For Teachers Of Urban At-Risk Students, Betsy Bennet-Costi
Perceived Administrative Support For Teachers Of Urban At-Risk Students, Betsy Bennet-Costi
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate effective administrative support for successful teachers of urban at-risk students. The main difficulty in studying administrative support is that it comes in so many ways. Johnson’s (1990) theory of workplace variables and Butterworth's (1981) social exchange theory were the basis for this study. Failures of at-risk students threaten the well being of public schools and have become a generally recognized social problem of national priority. This study explores how principals act to influence the success of teachers as they work with at-risk students. It is grounded in the following four assumptions: 1. …
State Policy And Public Administration Impacts On An Emerging Industry: The Wine Industry In Oregon And Washington, Anthony Gene White
State Policy And Public Administration Impacts On An Emerging Industry: The Wine Industry In Oregon And Washington, Anthony Gene White
Dissertations and Theses
Oregon and Washington state administrative agencies’ impacts on economic development within the winery industry are examined. Policy cluster development appears to impact economic development programs differently in each state. The wine industry has flourished in both states since 1970, yet Oregon with 60% of Washington's population supports 10% more wineries. Oregon winery numbers continue to grow while Washington’s seem to have leveled out. From the literature and industry interviews, three variables were selected to be tested for their industry impacts:
- domestic consumption (state population times wine industry per-capita consumption);
- market domination (estimated from interviews and proportional market share); and
- net …
An Implementation Analysis Of The Water Resources Development Act Of 1986, James Joseph Rich
An Implementation Analysis Of The Water Resources Development Act Of 1986, James Joseph Rich
Dissertations and Theses
Implementation research, an area once largely ignored in favor of policy design and impact assessment, now constitutes a significant portion of the policy analysis literature. One of the key issues addressed by the theory building portion of that literature is the necessity of precisely identifying implementation variables, conditions, or actions that measurably contribute to the success or failure of implementation efforts over a broad range of policies and programs, and to then suggest some order of significance. In order to test the validity of a variable set proposed by the literature, a multivariate implementation model was employed as the basis …

Dissertations and Theses
Bulk and thin film samples of Bi₂₋[subscript x]Pb[subscript x]Sr₂Ca₂Cu₃O[subscript y] compounds were prepared by suitable methods. The thin film and bulk samples were exposed to argon gas at temperatures of about 2000 °C and pressures of about 300 atm. in a ballistic compressor (BC) and then cooled at a rate of about 10⁵ °C/sec. The samples before and after this treatment were examined and compared using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) , and an x-ray diffractometer (XRD). Resistance and magnetic susceptibility measurements were made to determine changes in superconducting temperature …
Semiconductor P-N Junction Space Charge Region Capacitance, Mohammad Humayun Habib
Semiconductor P-N Junction Space Charge Region Capacitance, Mohammad Humayun Habib
Dissertations and Theses
The classical capacitance voltage characteristics based on the depletion approximation, is adequate at reverse bias, but introduces errors at high forward bias. Because of its inherent simplicity and compactness this classical depletion model is well studied and widely used in circuit simulators. In this work, a new model for the semiconductor space charge region (SCR) capacitance, based on physical justification, will be derived. This new model takes three input parameters, C0 , Vbi and m, thus eliminating the fitting parameter FC currently used in SPICE. This new model is applicable for any applied voltage and will be compared with the …
Speaker Preferences Of Listening Behaviors That Lead To Perceived Listening : A Pre-Condition Of Perceived Understanding, Christine M. Carpenter
Speaker Preferences Of Listening Behaviors That Lead To Perceived Listening : A Pre-Condition Of Perceived Understanding, Christine M. Carpenter
Dissertations and Theses
When attempting to communicate with another person, the success or failure that a communicator perceives, he or she interprets as understanding or misunderstanding. Research has shown that "perceived understanding" or the "feeling of being understood" is important in self-concept development. However, for some time researchers have focused on the listener's needs and the speaker's needs have been given less attention. Yet, the listener's role in meeting the speaker's needs, particularly in providing feedback to the speaker, is of utmost importance if the speaker is to have the "feeling of being understood." This research examined the concept of the "feeling of …
Correction Of Chromatic Aberration With An Electron Mirror, Michael Stewart Mauck
Correction Of Chromatic Aberration With An Electron Mirror, Michael Stewart Mauck
Dissertations and Theses
The theoretical basis for using electron mirrors as correctors of chromatic aberration is presented and an experimental verification of correction of chromatic aberration is demonstrated. A hyperbolic electrostatic electron mirror operating in its converging range and at unity magnification was used as a corrector. A novel separating system with deflections taking place at image planes was developed to implement the mirror without impairing the resolution. Correction was demonstrated in an electron optical probe system. The chromatic aberration was measured by means of the shadows cast by a fine mesh placed near the final image. The experimental method and equipment are …
Dynamic Nmr Study Of Bond Rotational Activation Parameters In Micelles, Dietmar A. Leitner
Dynamic Nmr Study Of Bond Rotational Activation Parameters In Micelles, Dietmar A. Leitner
Dissertations and Theses
The behavior of surfactants in solution has been and still is of scientific, technological, and industrial interest. The micelle forming compounds sodium N-( octyloxycarbonyl)sarcosinate (NaOcSarc), and sodium N-(decyloxycarbonyl)sarcosinate (NaDecSarc) show in aqueous solution two 1H NMR N-methyl peaks arising from a possible cis- or trans-conformation. The relative population of the N-methyl peaks depends mostly on the concentration of surfactant indicating micelle formation. Upon heating the two peaks start to coalesce and finally appear as one single peak. The temperature range in which this phenomenon occurs is from 25°C to 65°C. The primary interest of this study was to determine …
Compiling Ace For Distributed-Memory Machines, Jun Song
Compiling Ace For Distributed-Memory Machines, Jun Song
Dissertations and Theses
Distributed-memory machines offer a very high level of performance, flexibility and scalability. But the memory organization of this kind of machine determines that processes on different processors must communicate explicitly by sending and receiving messages. As a result, the programmer faces the enormously difficult task of detailed planning of algorithm-irrelevant, low-level communication issues. This level of programming resembles writing assembly programs for a sequential machine.
ACE is a message-passing language with abstract communication statements. It was defined by Dr. Jingke Li at Portland State University. The communication in ACE is still explicit, but it is abstracted to a higher level. …

Democratic Ideology, The Frontier Ethos, Medical Practice And Hospital Culture: Pacific Northwest Health-Seekers, Community Health And The Sisters Of Providence, Vancouver, Wa 1856 - 1879, Susan T.L. Courtney
Dissertations and Theses
Most historians readily acknowledge the economic incentive that prompted many pioneers to migrate westward across the overland trail. Health motivations remain generally unexplored. Many Americans had settled the interior regions most suited to farming, especially the acreage around river valleys in the Mississippi drainage system. Unfortunately, health conditions were not favorable to human existence.
The dilemma of economic well-being versus health disaster motivated a number of Americans to seek better living conditions. Some chose overland migration to the Pacific Northwest. The situation in contemporary medical practice was a kaleidoscope of competing sects and contradictory convictions. The mainline profession of medicine, …
Hawthorne Boulevard: Commercial Gentrification And The Creation Of An Image, Rachel Ann Hardyman
Hawthorne Boulevard: Commercial Gentrification And The Creation Of An Image, Rachel Ann Hardyman
Dissertations and Theses
Portland's Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard illustrates commercial gentrification in progress. Once a declining service district, "Hawthorne" is now one of the city's most popular shopping streets. Tracing and classifying businesses, using address listings from city directories, gives an accurate picture of changes since 1980. Three parallel trends can be distinguished in the makeup of the business mix: a shift from services to retailing; a move towards a regional, rather than a neighborhood, market area; and a cultural upgrading associated with the influx of increasingly expensive stores. Classification also aids in the definition of a tipping point at which revitalization became gentrification. …
Binary Mixtures Near Surfaces, Patrick Dunn
Binary Mixtures Near Surfaces, Patrick Dunn
Dissertations and Theses
This paper presents an approach to modeling a binary mixture near a surf ace. The approach used is based on statistical mechanics. The Cluster Variation (CV) method is used to solve an Ising-like model with a cluster size of two (neighboring lattice points). The free energy of the system is expressed in terms of the probabilities of occurrences of particular clusters. The CV method is first developed for a homogeneous system which leads to a set of three non-linear partial differential equations. The surface boundary is then introduced and the CV method is developed for this system which leads to …
A Comparison Of Expressive Vocabulary Produced By Nonambulatory, Speaking Preschool Children And Ambulatory Speaking Preschool Children, Kim Denise Baker
A Comparison Of Expressive Vocabulary Produced By Nonambulatory, Speaking Preschool Children And Ambulatory Speaking Preschool Children, Kim Denise Baker
Dissertations and Theses
Children with severe physical disabilities often do not have the capabilities for oral communication. Professionals are frequently faced with selecting vocabulary for children who are unable to use vocal output because of severe motor impairments. A child who is nonambulatory may have additional reasons for communicating and sees the world from a different viewpoint than his ambulatory peers. Selecting appropriate words for an initial lexicon that are useful to nonspeaking disabled children that also meet normal language acquisition standards is a concern. This study specifically addresses this concern by looking at the vocabulary differences of ambulatory and nonambulatory preschool children. …

Effective Middle School Teaching: Factors That Promote And Maintain It, Judith Ann Smith
Effective Middle School Teaching: Factors That Promote And Maintain It, Judith Ann Smith
Dissertations and Theses
The past thirty years has seen the middle school as an organization come of age and with it a renewed emphasis on meeting the needs of the early adolescent student. Although many current studies have addressed middle school issues, one of the most significant was the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development's Turning Points: Preparing Youth for the 21st Century (1989). It claimed that the middle school is the "last best chance" to turn young lives toward a meaningful future and, in order to do so, schools must be staffed with "expert" teachers.
Once one knows what an "expert" teacher is, …

Intergenerational Programming: A Confluence Of Interests Between The Frail Elderly And Urban Youth, Doris Schindler
Dissertations and Theses
Two groups of urban residents present ongoing problems, the frail elderly and disadvantaged youth who are approaching transition from school to the work force. Many of the disadvantaged youth are at risk because of family background, inadequate education, and lack of work experience. Many of the frail elderly are unable to care for themselves because of debility, chronic illness, or functional impairments.
The United States is experiencing an unprecedented increase in the numbers of persons over 65 years of age and it is expected that between 1980 and 2000 there will be a 67 percent increase in persons 80 and …
Improved Methodology For Limit States Finite Element Analysis Of Lattice Type Structures Using Nonlinear Post-Buckling Member Performance, Markus Ostendorp
Improved Methodology For Limit States Finite Element Analysis Of Lattice Type Structures Using Nonlinear Post-Buckling Member Performance, Markus Ostendorp
Dissertations and Theses
In an attempt to achieve more efficient designs, the technological frontier is pushed further and further. Every year science probes for a better understanding of natural phenomena, discovering new and improved methods to perform the same task more efficiently and with better results. One of the new technologies is the nonlinear analysis of structural systems using inelastic post-buckling member performance. Inelastic post-buckling member performance is defined as the constitutive relationship between axial load and displacement after the ultimate member capacity has been exceeded. A nonlinear analysis is able to predict the failure behavior of a structural system under ultimate loads …
Alzheimer's Disease Caregivers: The Transition From Home Care To Formal Care, Marie Theresa Duncan
Alzheimer's Disease Caregivers: The Transition From Home Care To Formal Care, Marie Theresa Duncan
Dissertations and Theses
Elderly people with irreversible cognitive declines such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) make many demands on those who must care for them, whether those caregivers are family members or the paid staff of nursing homes. When family members no longer have the capacity to meet these demands, a move to a nursing home or other formal care facility becomes the only solution. Such a shift does not, however, mean the end of family caregiving. Instead, the family's caregiving activities must be integrated with the ongoing efforts of the formal care staff. Currently, relatively little is known about 1) what families experience …
A Diagnostic Analysis Of Elementary Principal' Practices Which Serve Youth At-Risk Of School Failure, Rikki Kenneth Patrick
A Diagnostic Analysis Of Elementary Principal' Practices Which Serve Youth At-Risk Of School Failure, Rikki Kenneth Patrick
Dissertations and Theses
This study provides a description of the practices elementary school principals employ to reduce the likelihood that at-risk youth will actually experience school failure. The problem investigated in this study is reflected in this broad question: What is the relationship of principals' practices to the provision of service for at-risk youth?
Differences in the importance and frequency of use of practices by principals were compared. Variables such as school size, percentage of students who are eligible for free lunch, percentage of students who are at-risk, student mobility, and principal's rating of how successfully their school is serving at-risk youth were …
