Synthesis And Computational Studies Of Α- And Δ-Substituted Macrocyclic Europium And Ytterbium Complexes, Delainey Amara Winder
Synthesis And Computational Studies Of Α- And Δ-Substituted Macrocyclic Europium And Ytterbium Complexes, Delainey Amara Winder
Dissertations and Theses
The uses of macrocyclic lanthanide complexes are vast, with many targeted MRI contrast agents at the forefront of the field. Many of these are ParaCEST agents, which require exchangeable protons accessible on the macrocycle and the slow exchange of coordinated water molecules. The substitution at both the α- and δ-carbon on the amide pendant arm of these macrocyclic lanthanide complexes can lock bulky groups on the δ-carbon to a pseudo-axial position. When the α- and δ-carbons have the same chirality, the bulky group will be pseudo-equatorial, and when the chirality is opposed, the bulky group will be pseudo-axial. By performing …

Centering The Leader: An Investigation Of Leader-Centric Variables In The Support Provision Process, Jordyn Jan Leslie
Centering The Leader: An Investigation Of Leader-Centric Variables In The Support Provision Process, Jordyn Jan Leslie
Dissertations and Theses
Few studies to date have investigated leader-centric variables associated with the support provision process. The following dissertation includes three studies that attempt to further understand such relationships. In Study 1, the interaction between leader sleep quantity and quality on various types of leader support (e.g., general supervisor support, family supportive supervisor behaviors, and sleep leadership) is studied using both employee and leader ratings. Study 2 integrates leader-centric research with work-life supportive leadership to propose a new theoretical model that delineates leader-centric variables (e.g., health & well-being, skills, role expectations, job demands) as precursors to the provision and perception of work-life …
Large Length Scale Droplet Capillary Phenomena: Generation, Jump, And Capture, Karl Jeffrey Theodore Cardin
Large Length Scale Droplet Capillary Phenomena: Generation, Jump, And Capture, Karl Jeffrey Theodore Cardin
Dissertations and Theses
Understanding the life cycle of droplets, from generation to capture, for example, is critical to understanding environments from the air-sea interface to the indoor environment of the International Space Station. Investigations have been performed in this work to provide insight into three droplet phenomena, each ubiquitous in both terrestrial and microgravity settings, through a lens of capillary flow. Each investigation attempts to disentangle the effects of gravity from the effects of surface tension. A drop tower test campaign is performed for each of the three investigations. Models are developed and simulations are performed to rationalize the observations. Each investigation is …

Synoptic Drivers Of Extreme Precipitation In The Upper Yuba Watershed Of California, Emma Nichole Russell
Synoptic Drivers Of Extreme Precipitation In The Upper Yuba Watershed Of California, Emma Nichole Russell
Dissertations and Theses
California's annual precipitation is dependent on a few strong storms and in addition to its Mediterranean climate, leads to great variability in precipitation both within and across years. While efforts to reduce the impacts of extreme precipitation events have been implemented, forecasting for these events remains a challenge in regions with complex terrain and dynamic meteorological drivers. In order to improve forecasting and preparedness for such events, it is important to understand the range of atmospheric drivers that lead to extreme precipitation, particularly on a small scale. Here we aim to better understand the variety of meteorological mechanisms resulting in …

Resource-Constrained 2d Scene Recovery With Single-Photon Cameras, Daphne Ariadne Kurzenhauser
Resource-Constrained 2d Scene Recovery With Single-Photon Cameras, Daphne Ariadne Kurzenhauser
Dissertations and Theses
The modern world is built of images. However, in our goal to photograph and replicate what the human eye is capable of seeing, we are throttled by the restrictions of conventional imaging sensors in high- and low-illumination environments. Single-photon cameras (SPCs) have recently emerged as a promising alternative to conventional camera sensors for capturing images in challenging conditions such as high-dynamic range and fast scene motion. Compared to traditional CMOS cameras, SPCs exploit the arrival of individual photons rather than using an aggregate photon count to compute the brightness of pixels. However, SPCs are extremely resource-intensive, making them inconvenient for …

Driven by this lack of literature, this qualitative study explored how an executive team experienced and navigated the complexities of integrating and advancing DEIB in their organization. …
Yang-Baxter Equations, David Lovitz
Yang-Baxter Equations, David Lovitz
Dissertations and Theses
Multiple equations in math, physics, quantum information, and elsewhere are referred to as "the" Yang-Baxter equation, in spite of being a broad family of equations. Most of the equations are nonlinear matrix equations, where the unknown variable is a matrix. This is the case for the so called braided, algebraic, and generalized forms of "the" equation, which are the primary focus of this dissertation. Finding solutions to the various forms of these equations has been the subject of much research. The equations in all their forms are largely considered intractable in high dimensions, and only in dimension 2 have the …

While gender differences in terms of STEM majors has been oft-studied, this dissertation contributes to this body of literature by advancing Health & Social Sciences (HSS) majors as a separate category and examining the ways in which men and women may be sorted into these different types of major before and during college, despite the strong overlap in science and math related content. …
The Genetic Consequences Of Pollen And Seed Transport In The Wind, Elizabeth Hendrickson Scott
The Genetic Consequences Of Pollen And Seed Transport In The Wind, Elizabeth Hendrickson Scott
Dissertations and Theses
Dispersal is a crucial ecological and evolutionary process in plants. Seed dispersal is responsible for the colonization of novel locations and for range expansion in response to climate change, and pollen dispersal is important for the maintenance of genetic diversity in populations, particularly through long-distance dispersal events. Because plants are sessile, many species are dependent upon dispersal vectors to facilitate gene flow. Dispersal in the wind is a common vector in multiple plant families, as dispersal by abiotic vectors does not depend on community composition and is therefore more reliable than dispersal by biotic vectors. Despite prevalence among plant systems, …

Dft Based Modeling Of The Heavy Atom Effect In Triplet Photosensitizers: From Fundamental Mechanics To Rational Design, Bret Andrew Steinkamp
Dissertations and Theses
Photochemistry is the study of how light interacts with molecules and includes both the absorption and release of light. This document focuses on triplet photosensitizers -- molecules that utilize the excited triplet state -- for a variety of applications including photodynamic therapy and photocatalysis. There are many factors that influence the design of triplet photosensitizers; in this work, we have developed and used a methodology for the rational design of triplet photosensitizers based on an approximation of the heavy atom effect (HAE) from density functional theory calculations and the experimentally measured singlet oxygen quantum yield (ФΔ).
As excited …

Strengthening U.S. Jail Systems’ Response To Infectious Diseases: An Evaluation Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Erinn Bacchus
Dissertations and Theses
Jails across the United States were struck with increased infections and deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies have shown the structural make up of jails, lack of preparedness plans, and overcrowding contributed to health risks and poor health outcomes both inside jails and local communities. Yet little research has been dedicated to strengthening jail responses to infectious disease outbreaks spanning prevention measures, data collection, and reentry planning. Gaps include information on the (1) myriad infectious disease mitigation strategies used in jails and adherence to CDC prevention guidelines, (2) development of a standardized epidemiologic surveillance system, and (3) experiences working at …
The Nuanced Relationship Between Mindfulness, Racial Prejudice, And Policy Support, Jared Michael Cutler
The Nuanced Relationship Between Mindfulness, Racial Prejudice, And Policy Support, Jared Michael Cutler
Dissertations and Theses
Researchers have investigated the relationship between mindfulness and prejudice, although the findings have been somewhat inconsistent. Two broad factors may be responsible for these mixed findings: different conceptualizations of mindfulness across studies, and ideological differences among participants. Attention monitoring and acceptance, together, are proposed to be responsible for the psychological benefits of mindfulness, including reduced emotion rumination. Attention alone, however, strengthens rumination, which predicts prejudice. Additionally, prejudice hinders the endorsement of equitable policy. As such, mindfulness measures and interventions that capture attention alone, then, may be positively related to prejudice and negatively associated with support for equitable policy, whereas mindfulness …
