An Investigation Of Client Fluency Maintenance Between 1972-1977 At Portland State University, Pricilla Lynn Ginter

Dissertations and Theses

The use of so many different therapeutic approaches to stuttering raises frequent questions about methodology and treatment. Confidence in a methodology and treatment approach depends upon follow-up research conducted with systemic analysis of the individuals prior to treatment and following treatment.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a follow-up evaluation on R.L. Casteel's Four Stage Stuttering Program at Portland State University and to examine the degree of maintained fluency in relation to entering baseline, time in program, and exit stage.

The Design And Construction Of A Flashlamp-Pumped Frequency-Doubled Dye Laser Applicable To Long Path Monitoring Of Air Pollutants, Joel Craig Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

The subject of this thesis is the development of a laser light source which could be used in an air pollution monitor to measure the average concentration of sulfur dioxide gas over long paths (>1 km). Many of the problems encountered in designing a long-path pollutant monitor such as instrument cost and reliability, the selection of an optimum spectral region for making the measurement, and light losses due to scattering and turbulence, are considered. The result of these considerations together with a survey of available laser light sources suggested that a frequency-doubled dye laser possessed several advantages over other …

Welfare Stigmatization And The Elderly: The Case Of The Supplemental Security Income Program, Peter Jic-Leung Man Jan 1979

Welfare Stigmatization And The Elderly: The Case Of The Supplemental Security Income Program, Peter Jic-Leung Man

Dissertations and Theses

Policy-makers and others historically have assumed that welfare programs should give assistance to the poor and carry stigma. This attitude in part developed from the English Poor Laws tradition in which poverty was considered a negative condition. Labeling theory has often been used to explain the process of welfare stigmatization. Once an individual is labeled as a deviant, such as a welfare recipient, a self-fulfilling prophecy is initiated. Others perceive and respond to the individual as a deviant and the individual also internalized the stigma attached to such a role. The stigma attached to public dependency becomes an outcome of …

Affirmative Action Programs In Social Service Agencies: Status Of The Female M.S.W., Geraldine Ann Berg Jan 1979

Affirmative Action Programs In Social Service Agencies: Status Of The Female M.S.W., Geraldine Ann Berg

Dissertations and Theses

Job status and salary inequities between men and women have only recently been documented. The federal government, over the past few decades, through various acts and executive orders, has created legislation to prohibit discrimination based on race, sex, color, religion or national origin in all employment practices. The question is to what extent this legislation has permeated social service agencies and affected their employment patterns, particularly with respect to administrative positions.

In 1976, the Women's Issues Committee of the Oregon Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), addressed this question by initiating a study of social work employment …

Public Sector Collective Bargaining And Impasse Resolution: An Analysis Of The Oregon Fact-Finding Process, Martin David Haney

Dissertations and Theses

The topic of this dissertation is the fact-finding stage of Oregon's public sector impasse resolution procedure. The use of fact-finding has dramatically increased because of the recent and rapid growth in public sector collective bargaining, and the resulting increase in public sector strikes. Beginning in 1962 with John F. Kennedy's Executive Order 10988, a series of federal and state laws were passed granting and expanding collective bargaining rights to public employees. Many of the state laws resemble the private sector model provided under the Labor Management Relations Act of 1947 (Taft-Hartley); however, the use of the strike as a weapon …

The Portland Boundary Commission: A Case Study, Marvin James Price Jan 1979

The Portland Boundary Commission: A Case Study, Marvin James Price

Dissertations and Theses

By the late 1960s, the literature of state and local government had been long dominated by what might now be termed a "traditional" approach, although the "public choice" paradigm was challenging it successfully. Those who took the traditional approach saw America's metropolitan areas to be in a crisis state, to be suffering from a variety of social, cultural and economic ills which were making these areas virtually uninhabitable. Exacerbating these difficulties was a system of local governmental organization which the traditionalists characterized as fragmented, overlapping, and duplicative, a system incapable of providing an areawide governmental structure to respond to areawide …

Thought, Word And Deed In The Mid-Tudor Commonwealth : Sir Thomas Smith And Sir William Cecil In The Reign Of Edward Vi, Ann B. Clark

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the general economic and intellectual climate of the mid-Tudor Commonwealth as a background for a specific study of the financial reforms instituted by Edward VI's government while the Duke of Northumberland controlled the Privy Council. The philosophy behind these measures parallels the principles expressed in A Discourse of the Commonweal of this Realm of England, a treatise written in 1549 by Sir Thomas Smith, Secretary to King Edward. In 1551-1552 the implementation of financial reform fell to Sir William Cecil, also King's Secretary and Northumberland's key administrator on the Council. In establishing the link between Smith's ideas …

Some Physical And Biological Factors Affecting Red-Tailed Hawk Productivity, Stewart Wayne Janes Jan 1979

Some Physical And Biological Factors Affecting Red-Tailed Hawk Productivity, Stewart Wayne Janes

Dissertations and Theses

Various physical and biological factors affecting annual productivity in a Red-tailed Hawk population in north-central Oregon were investigated. The percentage of the population successfully fledging one or more young was the most important factor in determining the number of young fledged per pair in a given year. Neither clutch size nor the number of young fledged per successful nest varied significantly. Percent pair success was correlated with several January weather variables. A cold and dry January is positively correlated with Red-tailed Hawk productivity. This is apparently related to the onset of rapid vegetative growth and this in turn is positively …
