Housing The Low-Income, Urban Elderly: A Role For The Single Room Occupancy Hotel, Mary Ann Burki
Housing The Low-Income, Urban Elderly: A Role For The Single Room Occupancy Hotel, Mary Ann Burki
Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the question of whether there is a role for the single room occupancy (SRO) hotel as a form of housing for a select group of low-income, urban elderly persons. Such a focus was selected because it is the single room type of housing, with neither individual kitchen nor bath, which HUD defines as substandard. This definition is viewed as problematic for several reasons. First, it has been a major barrier to the use of Federal funds to support such housing either through rehabilitation or rent subsidy, and second, it has been a major incentive to the use …
The Articulation Of Formal And Informal Helping: The Influence Of Organizational Context On Relationships Between Professional And Lay Caregivers, Priscilla J. Kimboko
The Articulation Of Formal And Informal Helping: The Influence Of Organizational Context On Relationships Between Professional And Lay Caregivers, Priscilla J. Kimboko
Dissertations and Theses
This research is an exploratory study of thirty human service agencies' programs to link their services to informal helpers in their communities. The helpers were persons identified as important helping resources to persons in their own social networks, who were often also clients of the service agency. The thirty agencies were drawn from across the nation, and served several different types of client populations and needs. Models from practice and theory suggest that linkages between the formal and informal caregiving systems should be modeled after primary relations, informal and personal in character. Research and literature on organizations suggests, however, that …
A Study Of The Effects Of Active Participation In Instruction Upon Learning, Jerry D. Pratton
A Study Of The Effects Of Active Participation In Instruction Upon Learning, Jerry D. Pratton
Dissertations and Theses
An experimental study of the effects of active participation on student learning was conducted with two levels of treatment of the independent variable. Intact groups were used because it was reasoned that results generated in classroom settings would likely be more generalizable to other classroom settings. The study was conducted in a medium-sized suburban school district mainly residential in character. Five project teachers were trained to teach a lesson on simple probability. Each teacher taught four lessons to fifth grade classes, two with Treatment I (active student participation) and two with Treatment II (no active student participation). The lessons were …
Investigation Of The Contribution Of Aquatic Humus To The Transport Of Ddt In The Environment, Dan Philip Blunk
Investigation Of The Contribution Of Aquatic Humus To The Transport Of Ddt In The Environment, Dan Philip Blunk
Dissertations and Theses
The fate and transport of insoluble, hydrophobic organic pollutants in the aquatic environment constitutes a prominent area of concern. It is thought that pollutants of this nature may exist in association with organic carbon, which is predominantly aquatic humus. This type of association could significantly affect the kinetics of such transformation processes as volatilization or chemical and biological degradation of the pollutant. While dissolved organic matter (DOM) comprises the bulk of organic carbon (or aquatic humus) in natural waters, the interaction between naturally occurring DOM and insoluble organic pollutants has not been quantified. The work presented in this dissertation is …

Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation focuses on the precise and meaningful measurement of change as it pertains to the urban subarea residential housing status. The word "measurement" is qualified as meaningful in the sense that the approach adopted is of relevance to public policy. Specifically, the dissertation is aimed at providing answers to the following research questions: First, how can the changes in residential housing status in the different parts of an urban area be precisely and meaningfully measured? Second, what variables are most appropriate for the measurement? Third, can these variables be useful for differentiating between various parts of the urban area? …
Proverbs : Tools For World View Studies : An Exploratory Comparison Of The Bemba Of Zambia And The Shona Of Zimbabwe, Larry L. Niemeyer
Proverbs : Tools For World View Studies : An Exploratory Comparison Of The Bemba Of Zambia And The Shona Of Zimbabwe, Larry L. Niemeyer
Dissertations and Theses
The proverbs of people - defined by Webster as short sayings "in common use expressing a well-known truth or common fact ascertained by experience or observation" - have been an object of study to many kinds of people for many decades. Robert R. Marett has said that proverbs are a key to both the language and culture of a people. But, knowledge of the language and culture of a people, in itself, cannot be satisfying to the discerning anthropologist. An effort must be made to identify and understand the categories of thought, codes and symbols that undergird their language and …

A Study Of Age And Sex-Related Differences In The Perception Of Emotional Stimuli, Nancy Mellor Canizio
A Study Of Age And Sex-Related Differences In The Perception Of Emotional Stimuli, Nancy Mellor Canizio
Dissertations and Theses
In a tachistoscopic perception task, adult males in the Fels Research Institute's longitudinal population (Kagan and Moss, 1960) were found to have a higher recognition threshold for pictures depicting dependency scenes than adult females. The female subjects had a higher recognition threshold for aggressive scenes than the males.
The present study was designed to further compare male and female perception of dependent and aggressive stimuli by including a developmental component to test if the perceptual differences vary with age. A benign or neutral stimulus category was added to aid in determining direction of any resulting differences: i.e., heightened perception or …
Phonational Frequency Ranges In Vocally Untrained Adults Using Different Cardinal Vowels, Lorie Renee Chambers
Phonational Frequency Ranges In Vocally Untrained Adults Using Different Cardinal Vowels, Lorie Renee Chambers
Dissertations and Theses
In the clinical management of voice clients, it is important to measure accurate pitch ranges in order to determine if a client has a normal range or is speaking at an optimum pitch. It is not clear from the literature which vowel should be used in determining these pitch ranges. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the phonational frequency ranges in adults with no vocal training when phonating the cardinal vowels of /i/, /u/, and /a/. The investigation sought to answer the following question: Does the phonational frequency range in vocally untrained adults vary significantly when phonating the …

A study was undertaken to determine the abundance, distribution, perching heights, diets and territory sizes of Red-Tailed Hawks on Sauvie Island, Oregon. Sauvie Island supported a large wintering population of non-territorial Red-Tailed Hawks. The establishment of territories began around 10 January. Average perch height was found to be 14.2 m. Average perch height increased from fall to spring, corresponding-to the onset of the breeding season and to the onset of egg-laying and incubation. Voles (Microtus spp.) were the principal prey year-round, though waterfowl were more important in terms of biomass in the winter and early spring. Territory sizes on the …
A Study Of Factors Affecting Cognitive Style In Mexican-American Children, Anne Kelter Gehrig
A Study Of Factors Affecting Cognitive Style In Mexican-American Children, Anne Kelter Gehrig
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years cognitive style has become the focus of much educational research. Many educators believe that instructional effectiveness can be maximized by utilizing the student's preferred cognitive style as a springboard for introducing new concepts as well as by restructuring educational practices so that the child learns to deal effectively with diverse cognitive styles. Early research on cognitive style focused solely on behavioral indicators. Today many researchers acknowledge that, in order to understand cognitive style, one must examine brain processing, as different styles of thinking result from the manner in which each hemisphere of the brain processes information.

A Qualitative Analysis Of Nine Nonverbal Communications Texts, Edward J. Cavin
Dissertations and Theses
Throughout the past decade, numerous texts have been published which claim to be ideally suited for use in a basic, introductory nonverbal communication course. Many authors state that their text will comprehensively cover all aspects of the field of nonverbal communication. Unfortunately, many of the texts cover only a portion of the concepts which have been deemed as essential for inclusion in a beginning nonverbal communication course.
With the plethora of material relating to this topic on the market, there is a need for a comprehensive evaluation form by which an elevator could determine the specific method of layout (manner …
The Relationship Of Brain Hemisphere Orientation To Wisc-R Subscale Scores, Robin Diane Thomas Hayden
The Relationship Of Brain Hemisphere Orientation To Wisc-R Subscale Scores, Robin Diane Thomas Hayden
Dissertations and Theses
Because there is a growing amount of contradictory evidence concerning the relationship of WISC-R subscale scores to hemispheric orientation, the present study examined the validity of the WISC-R subscale scores as indicators of individual hemispheric orientation.
The present study hypothesized a significant relationship between Verbal-Performance scale score discrepancies and hemispheric orientation as assessed by conjugate lateral eye movements. This study also hypothesized that subjects with a right hemisphere orientation would score higher on t~ block design, picture completion, and object assembly subtests than would subjects with a left hemisphere orientation.
Developing An Attitude Test To Predict Treatment Outcome In Depressed And Anxious Outpatients : An Exploratory Study, Kathryn Ainslie Paris
Developing An Attitude Test To Predict Treatment Outcome In Depressed And Anxious Outpatients : An Exploratory Study, Kathryn Ainslie Paris
Dissertations and Theses
While much research has examined factors thought to affect patient compliance with therapeutic regimen, relatively little is known about the relationship between psychiatric patients' attitudes toward treatment regimen and their adherence to the treatment regimen. Compliance rates for psychiatric patients remain the lowest of the medical patient population, probably due to psychological and social characteristics of psychiatric patients. Because of a trend in the United States toward self-medication for an increasingly ambulatory psychiatric patient population, the ability to predict patient compliance with medication regimen has become more important than ever before. Before potential noncompliers can be identified and patient compliance …

The Measurement Of Economic Diversification With Reference To Regional Unemployment, Adil H. El-Haimus
The Measurement Of Economic Diversification With Reference To Regional Unemployment, Adil H. El-Haimus
Dissertations and Theses
Over the past four years, considerable attention has been focused on the problems of high unemployment in the State of Oregon. The percentage of jobless continued to be higher than that of the nation. The depressed housing market, caused by high interest rates, coupled with an increase in the import of Canadian timber managed to reduce the demand for Oregon lumber and wood products drastically. This has resulted in an abnormally high unemployment rate in many of Oregon's counties which are dependent on the wood industry; for example, the 1980 jobless rate in Harney County reached a record high of …

The purpose of the study was to determine whether there were certain measurable personality …
Laser Induced Hydroxyl Radical Fluoresence At Atmospheric Pressure, Cornelius Yuk-Kwan Chan
Laser Induced Hydroxyl Radical Fluoresence At Atmospheric Pressure, Cornelius Yuk-Kwan Chan
Dissertations and Theses
Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) is one of the chief methods for detecting ambient hydroxyl radicals. To measure the absolute concentration of this important atmospheric chemical species, accurately known quenching rate constants due to the dominant gases in the air are of paramount importance. Unfortunately, these rate constants have only been measured under conditions remote from those of ambient air. This dissertation reports the measurement of the rate constants of water, argon, nitrogen and oxygen under ambient conditions. As the LIF is carried out at atmospheric pressure, the OH fluorescence life-time becomes extremely short (about 1 ns). Time Correlated Photon Counting …

Kinetics Of Proton Transport In Lipid Membranes Induced By Some Chlorinated Phenols, Ananda Ranjith Jayaweera
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation represents an attempt to understand the mechanism of the action of pesticides derived from chlorinated phenols (pentachlorophenol, pentachlorobenzenethiol, and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol) in lipid membranes; specifically, the kinetics of pesticide induced hydrogen ion transfer in lecithin-cholesterol membranes and its relationship to uncoupling activity in energy transducing membranes. Information on pesticide induced charge transport in membranes was obtained from the measurements of steady state and transient membrane conductance and membrane potentials as a function of the composition of the aqueous phase surrounding the membrane and of membrane composition. In addition, a systematic theoretical study of a series of membrane transport models …
Iron Acquisition By Cyanobacteria: Siderophore Production And Iron Transport By Anabaena, Peter James Lammers
Iron Acquisition By Cyanobacteria: Siderophore Production And Iron Transport By Anabaena, Peter James Lammers
Dissertations and Theses
The cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. (PCC #6411) is known to produce the siderophore, schizokinen, in response to iron limitation. Environmental factors which influence schizokinen production have been examined utilizing a bioassay method based upon the stimulation of growth of the siderophore-requiring bacterium Arthrobacter flavescens JG-9. Schizokinen production by Anabaena increased in low-iron media and was stimulated approximately five-fold media containing one millimolar citric acid. Growth of Anabaena under nitrogen-fixing conditions reduced extracellular schizokinen concentrations 3-4 fold, in late growth phase, compared to cells grown on nitrate. Cells grown in ammonium-containing medium yielded intermediate concentrations of schizokinen. The Csaky assay, which is …
The Effect Of Chronic Post-Natal Protein Deprivation On The Social Interaction Of The Rhesus Macaque, Gertrude Alice Fogle
The Effect Of Chronic Post-Natal Protein Deprivation On The Social Interaction Of The Rhesus Macaque, Gertrude Alice Fogle
Dissertations and Theses
It has been well documented that protein calorie malnutrition (PCM) gives rise to physiological and behavioral deficits. These deficits include changes in emotional, exploratory and social behaviors of the malnourished organism. In particular, previous research has demonstrated that Feci from infancy results in avoidance of and failure to initiate social interactions as well as decreased contact with the environment, which in turn, further disrupt emotional and social development. This study examined the effects of chronic protein malnutrition on the social behavior of adult rhesus macaques by experimentally testing the hypothesis that deficient monkeys, unlike normal well-fed ones, are more likely …
