Synthetic And Nitrogen-15 Nmr Studies Of Some Heteroaromatic Systems, Roger Martin Sheets Jan 1986

Synthetic And Nitrogen-15 Nmr Studies Of Some Heteroaromatic Systems, Roger Martin Sheets

Dissertations and Theses

Beginning in the mid-1960's synthetic nucleoside derivatives of polyazaindolizines and polyazaindenes were studied for their anticancer activities. The most promising nucleosides for anticancer activity were pyrrolo-, imidazo-, and s-triazolo- pyrimidines and triazines. Syntheses of 1,2,4-triazolo 3,4c -1,2,4-triazine-7-oxide, 1,2,4-triazolo 3,4c pyrazine-7-oxide and 1,2,4-triazolo 2,3c pyrazine-7-oxide were achieved by the cyclization of the appropriate 3-hydrazinoazine N-oxide with diethoxymethyl acetate. When different one carbon cyclization agents react with the 3-hydrazinoazine-1-oxides they did not produce the expected polyazaindene-7-oxides. The reaction of formic acid with 3-hydrazino-1,2,4-triazine-1-oxide or 3-hydrazinopyrazine-1-oxide produced the 3-formylhydrazino derivatives. Similarly, the reactions of the 3-hydrazino -pyrazine-1-oxide and -triazine-1-oxide with benzaldehyde, acetic anhydride, …

Producer Cooperatives And Industrial Democracy: A Comparative Study Of The Performance Of Cooperative And Conventional Plywood Plants, Youssef Khodaparast Jan 1986

Producer Cooperatives And Industrial Democracy: A Comparative Study Of The Performance Of Cooperative And Conventional Plywood Plants, Youssef Khodaparast

Dissertations and Theses

Widely differing theoretical expectations exist concerning the economic performance of labor-managed firms or producer cooperatives (PCs). While a good number of theoretical studies of these firms by economists have been undertaken, there remain considerable gaps in the empirical record. This is especially true in the case of American PCs. In general, theoretical controversies have not been tempered by enough empirical analysis. While some expect good performance from PCs, others are much less sanguine. This study compares the economic performance of a group of eight worker-owned producer co-op plants with that of eight conventional mills in the Pacific Northwest softwood plywood …

Quadtree-Based Processing Of Digital Images, Ramin Naderi Jan 1986

Quadtree-Based Processing Of Digital Images, Ramin Naderi

Dissertations and Theses

Image representation plays an important role in image processing applications, which usually. contain a huge amount of data. An image is a two-dimensional array of points, and each point contains information (eg: color). A 1024 by 1024 pixel image occupies 1 mega byte of space in the main memory. In actual circumstances 2 to 3 mega bytes of space are needed to facilitate the various image processing tasks. Large amounts of secondary memory are also required to hold various data sets.

In this thesis, two different operations on the quadtree are presented.

There are, in general, two types of data …

The Spirituality Of Pierre De BéRulle, Steven Percy Poitra Jan 1986

The Spirituality Of Pierre De BéRulle, Steven Percy Poitra

Dissertations and Theses

The sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries witnessed a revival of spirituality throughout Europe. Positive theology emerged as both an instigation to and instrument for Christian humanists in their endeavor to redress the Church's fundamental relationship to the laity.

The early efforts for reform in France were discouraged by Gallicanist sympathies. Further, growing numbers of Calvinists combined with the possibility of a Protestant king led to thirty-five years of sporadic civil war.

From the 1580's and 90's, French spirituality began a period of renewal and growth. At the heart of the French experience was the famous Acarie circle among whose members …

There are at least 41 networks linking school districts, institutions of higher education, and Educational Service Districts in both rural and urban areas of the state. These networks, collaboratives, and consortia have the common purpose of improving education, and the belief that they can accomplish more cooperatively than they can individually. These networks are described in terms of purposes, benefits and problems, and desire for assistance. Comparisons showed that large school districts are much more likely to …

Enhanced Computer Graphics For Decision Makers, Floyd James Brock Jr. Jan 1986

Enhanced Computer Graphics For Decision Makers, Floyd James Brock Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

Words need a context to be understood. Visual patterns also need a context to convey their meaning. When patterns represent quantities in business graphics, decision makers (DMs) depend on contrasting visual contexts to discern patterns and discover relationships. Depending on the context in which DMs see trends, differences between two trends may point to a problem, to continuity, or to an opportunity. Can enhancing the context in computer graphics help DMs visualize problems? To answer this research question, three experiments were done in the field on computer graphics. One hundred five DMs tried 17 different contexts for time-series trends displayed …

Determinants Of The Variations In The Presence Of The Subfamily In U.S. Metropolitan Areas, 1980, John Ossaiedeme Umude

Dissertations and Theses

Over the years there has been interest in the living arrangements of Americans and the factors which influence those arrangements. Researchers have considered the growth of families headed by women, household consisting of single individuals, and those composed of unrelated individuals. One area, however, on which little attention has been focused is the presence of extended family living, characterized by the subfamily. The aim of this dissertation is to establish if subfamilies are a random or systematic phenomenon, and to identify the factors responsible for the variations in its occurrences within and across U.S. metropolitan areas. A causal model which …

Fuzzy Multiobjective Mathematical Programming In Economic Systems Analysis: Design And Method, Li Da Xu Jan 1986

Fuzzy Multiobjective Mathematical Programming In Economic Systems Analysis: Design And Method, Li Da Xu

Dissertations and Theses

Economic systems analysis is a systems analysis technique of setting out the factors that have to be taken into account in making economic systems decisions. The inquiring and operational systems of the technique are almost exclusively designed for well-structured systems. In review of economic systems analysis against systems thinking, there is a growing tendency to discard the analytical approach as inappropriate for dealing with an ill-structured issue. Therefore, economic systems analysis needs both the inquiring and operational systems which are appropriate for ill-structured systems. The foregoing leads to the introduction of an extensive methodology. Mainly, the weakness of economic systems …

Dwarf mistletoes are Parasitic flowering plants that infect conifer tree species. The effects of Arceuthobium americanum on the seed crop of Pinus contorta were examined over a two year period to evaluate the effects of altered host reproductive success on host population dynamics. Heavily infected trees produced significantly fewer cones than uninfected trees during the first season in which cones were collected. Cone length, number of seeds per cone, individual seed mass, and total calories per seed were significantly reduced in moderately and heavily infected trees. Trees with different levels of infection showed trends consistent with the above but no …

Electrochemical Methods For Speciation Of Inorganic Arsenic, Karen Ann D'Arcy Jan 1986

Electrochemical Methods For Speciation Of Inorganic Arsenic, Karen Ann D'Arcy

Dissertations and Theses

Arsenic is found in the environment in several oxidation states as well as in a variety of organoarsenic compounds. This situation puts additional demands on the analysis in that it is desirable to measure the amount of each species, not just all of the arsenic. The reason for this is that the different species have greatly different toxicities; of the major inorganic forms, As(III) is much more toxic than As(V). The goal of this research was to develop a convenient method for the analysis of mixtures of As(III) and As(V) at trace levels. Electroanalytical methods are inherently sensitive to oxidation …

The proposed model consists of basic consumption, production, foreign trade, and employment relationships. Estimation of the …

Potential Motivational Effects Of Altered Compensation Rates In Comparison To Other Type Incentives On Building Principal Performance, Allan Paul Deckard Jan 1986

Potential Motivational Effects Of Altered Compensation Rates In Comparison To Other Type Incentives On Building Principal Performance, Allan Paul Deckard

Dissertations and Theses

The effective schools research has repeatedly concluded that effective schools are characterized by effective administrators. The desire, then, of local school boards to improve administrator performance has emerged, based upon the assumption that as building principal performance improves, so does teacher performance, and ultimately, student performance. Merit pay has received a great deal of attention in education recently as a means to motivate administrators towards improved performance. Merit pay is supported by the "physical-economic" school of thought which believes that individuals are "economically motivated". In contrast, the "work itself" or "job satisfaction" school of thought believes that individuals are best …

The Contribution Of The Lymph Hearts In Compensation For Acute Hypovolemic Stress In The Toad Bufo Marinus, Mark Baustian Jan 1986

The Contribution Of The Lymph Hearts In Compensation For Acute Hypovolemic Stress In The Toad Bufo Marinus, Mark Baustian

Dissertations and Theses

Currently published data on the role of the lymphatic system in amphibians are inadequate and contradictory. Estimates of the rate of formation of lymph and the role of the lymph hearts in returning this fluid to the circulation are not based on actual volume determinations but rather estimates derived from changes in hematocrit using published values of plasma and blood volume. The lymph hearts are known to be vital to the maintenance of normal fluid compartment physiology and to increase their rate of activity during episodes of hypovolemic stress. Yet, significant redistribution of body fluids following hemorrage appears to occur …
