The Influence Of Functional Activities And Specific Curricular Domains On Choice In The Curriculum For Learners With Severe Handicaps, Mary Comfort Deboer Jul 1988

The Influence Of Functional Activities And Specific Curricular Domains On Choice In The Curriculum For Learners With Severe Handicaps, Mary Comfort Deboer

Dissertations and Theses

Literature is calling for the inclusion of choice into the curriculum for learner with severe handicaps, yet there are limited guidelines and materials for teachers to work with in longitudinal planning for choice.

The purpose of this study was to examine curricular elements in a sampling of existing programs and their relationship with choice. Three questions were asked within this analysis: (a) What relationship, if any, exists between the functionality of an activity and choice? (b) What relationship, if any, exists between a particular instructional domain and choice? and (c) What relationship, if any, exists between a teacher's judgement of …

Hospital Responses To A Nursing Shortage : Policy Issues And Professional Implications, Marlene Lobracco Smith

Dissertations and Theses

This study addresses three policy issues found in the literature: How can hospitals best manage the problem of shortages of the nursing home resource, how have federal policy makers responded to the mounting shortages, and how has the unique character of nursing influenced policy.

An analysis of existing hospital policy making is presented. An analysis of the class conflict within nursing is also presented. Data have been generated from a case sample of six urban hospitals in the Pacific Northwest to assess their management of the nursing resource during the critical shortages of the late 1970s.

Three response patterns have …

Hedonic Analysis Of Gasoline Retailing, Soleman A. Al-Bassir Jun 1988

Hedonic Analysis Of Gasoline Retailing, Soleman A. Al-Bassir

Dissertations and Theses

Researchers have difficulty modeling the influence of retailing attributes on consumer choice. The literature of retailing that has dealt with this issue has conventionally used experimental data for estimating the influence of retailing attributes on consumer behavior. The present research applies hedonic analysis to the measurement of the value of retailing attributes. This is accomplished by applying hedonic specifications to supply and demand models for the retail sales of unleaded gasoline for the purpose of estimating the influence of specified retailing attributes on retail prices. Four retailing attributes-accessibility, convenience, service, and competition-were expected to have a determinable value that was …

The Dooley Rhyolite Breccia in northeast Oregon was erupted between 12 and 16 million years ago, from central vents and linear feeder dikes within the Dooley Mountain quadrangle. The peraluminous, high-silica rhyolites of the formation were erupted over an irregular highland of eroded pre-Tertiary metamorphic rocks locally overlain by intracanyon, Eocene Clarno-type basalt flow(s). The Dooley Rhyolite Braccia is exposed in a tectonically disrupted, north-south trending graben across the Elkhorn Range. The formation is variable in thickness with maximum thickness exceeding 660 meters in the south and 600 meters in the north half of the quadrangle. Volumetrically the formation is …

Implementing Ray Tracing Algorithm In Parallel Environment, Tjah Jadi May 1988

Implementing Ray Tracing Algorithm In Parallel Environment, Tjah Jadi

Dissertations and Theses

Ray tracing is a very popular rendering algorithm in the field of computer graphics because it can generate highly-realistic images from three-dimensional models. Unfortunately, the computational cost is very expensive. To speed up the rendering process we present both static and dynamic scheduling (balancing) strategies for a multiprocessor system. Hence, the load balancing among the processors is the most important problem in parallel processing. The implementation of the algorithm is based on a modified octree structure.

The Effects Of Oral Conferencing And Written Comments On The Writing And Revisions Of Esl Students, Ann Louise Kirk May 1988

The Effects Of Oral Conferencing And Written Comments On The Writing And Revisions Of Esl Students, Ann Louise Kirk

Dissertations and Theses

This study looked at the effect of written and oral comments on students' writing. The research hypotheses were that the use of oral comments would improve the overall quality of the students papers, increase the length more, and cause more changes in content than the use of written comments. On the other hand, the use of written comments would cause a greater decrease in grammatical errors in the students' papers than oral comments. The tests used to evaluate these hypotheses were the holistic writing scale used by the Test of Written English (TWE), a word count, a content percentage scale …

Effects Of Feedback And Goal Setting On Job Attitudes And Productivity: A Field Study, Stephen Kildahl May 1988

Effects Of Feedback And Goal Setting On Job Attitudes And Productivity: A Field Study, Stephen Kildahl

Landscape And Change In Three Novels By Theodor Fontane, Jane Ellen Speerstra May 1988

Landscape And Change In Three Novels By Theodor Fontane, Jane Ellen Speerstra

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis traces and explicates the changes in Theodor Fontane's landscape depiction in the years 1887-1892. I examine his novels Cécile (1887), Irrungen, Wirrungen (1888), and Unwiederbringlich (1892). I show that Fontane, as though discarding a relic of the Romantic past, used increasingly less landscape in his narratives. He focused on the actions and conversation of his characters, and on their immediate surroundings. When these surroundings were urban, they tended to disappear. The progressive minimalization of landscape, and of cityscape in particular, foreshadowed the appearance in German literature of twentieth-century man: man alienated from nature in cities, and less aware …

Determination Of Homology Between The Arsenic Resistance Plasmids R45 And R773 In Escherichia Coli, Joshua T. Clark

Dissertations and Theses

The resistance transfer factor R45 from Escherichia coli confers inducible arsenate and arsenite resistance in that bacterium. The genes for these resistances were cloned into the EcoR1 - Sph1 multiple cloning site of PGEM3 Blue vector (Promega) to produce a 4.9 kilobase plasmid, pJC1. This recombinant plasmid, pJC1, conferred IPTG induced resistance to arsenite and arsenate. In addition, pJCl was tested for homology with the E. coli plasmid R773, which encodes for arsenic resistance in that bacterium as well.

Through DNA-DNA hybridization the arsenic resistance determinants of R45 and R773 were compared. Under stringent hybridization conditions, R45 demonstrated DNA sequence …

Boudica: An Illustrated Narrative, Robin A. Ator May 1988

Boudica: An Illustrated Narrative, Robin A. Ator

Dissertations and Theses

I study painting and composition for its own sake, and in this program I am pursuing it from a narrative or pictorial stance, much as did earlier artists, and doing so in contemporary terms. Distinguished examples of illustrators could include such artists as Raphael, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Rubens, and modern practitioners such as Wyeth and Baskin.

The illustrator needs not only control of his means, but also other qualities in addition to those of a studio painter. He needs an imagination that will allow portrayal of scenes and viewpoints that can't be arranged in a studio. The artist's memory and …

John Chrysostom, On The Statues: A Study In Crisis Rhetoric, Douglas B. Radke Apr 1988

John Chrysostom, On The Statues: A Study In Crisis Rhetoric, Douglas B. Radke

Dissertations and Theses

The name of John Chrysostom has historically been held in high esteem by the Christian Church. John was born, circa A.O. 350, in the Syrian city of Antioch. His rhetorical career led him to the apex of religious power as bishop of Constantinople. As a result of his verbal harangues of the political and religious leaders, he was sent into exile, where he died in A.O. 407. During his life time he was recognized both for his eloquence and his controversial style. Since the fifth century he has been remembered by the epitaph "Chrysostom," a tribute to his oratorical abilities, …

From 'The Help Of Grave And Modest Women' To 'The Care Of Men Of Sense': The Transition From Female Midwifery To Male Obstetrics In Early Modern England, Karen L. Smith Adams Mar 1988

From 'The Help Of Grave And Modest Women' To 'The Care Of Men Of Sense': The Transition From Female Midwifery To Male Obstetrics In Early Modern England, Karen L. Smith Adams

Dissertations and Theses

Until the sixteenth century, childbirth in England was the exclusive domain of women and was orchestrated by the female midwife. By the end of the seventeenth century, university-educated and church-approved male physicians were systematically beginning to usurp the midwife's role in the lying-in room and to gradually assume authority and power over the process of childbirth. Ultimately doctor-dominated childbirth threatened, and in some places accomplished, the displacement of the midwife. No one factor was responsible for the shift in delivery room personnel nor was the transition from female midwives to male obstetricians a "natural" one. This thesis looks at three …

Residential Care Facilities: Resident Characteristics And Public Policy, Sharon Anice Baggett Mar 1988

Residential Care Facilities: Resident Characteristics And Public Policy, Sharon Anice Baggett

Dissertations and Theses

Residential care is a rapidly growing form of housing and service provision for older adults. Residential care policy is defined by historical and cultural influences in social welfare and by the history of policy development and regulation in long term care, specifically for nursing homes. These influences have played a large role in the growing regulatory environment for residential care.

This study examines the characteristics of elderly residential care facility (RCF) residents and examines these through the lens of current state and federal regulations concerning the type of care given in these facilities. It is hypothesized that the lack of …

An Experiment Testing The Bolinger Principle To Teach Gerunds And Infinitives, Juliet Rosemarie Vawser

Dissertations and Theses

Gerunds and infinitives persist in being a major problem for students of English as a Second Language. Therefore, Bolinger's (1968) principle appeared to be an attractive alternative to teaching gerunds and infinitives as opposed to the usual way of list memorizing.

A group of 101 ESL learners ranging in the mid to upper intermediate level was randomly distributed among two groups--experimental and control. They were given three tests prior to the experiment and three tests after treatment. Both groups were given the same contextualized materials. However, the experimental group was taught gerunds and infinitives using the Bolinger principle whereas the …

A Comparison Of Three Methods For Measuring The Attenuation Provided By Insert-Type Hearing-Protective Devices, Lois Jeanne Gaier Feb 1988

A Comparison Of Three Methods For Measuring The Attenuation Provided By Insert-Type Hearing-Protective Devices, Lois Jeanne Gaier

Dissertations and Theses

To effectively implement an occupational hearing conservation program, employers must know the amount of attenuation (noise reduction) provided by the hearing protective devices used by their employees. Currently standardized test methods, performed under laboratory conditions, cannot be easily implemented in industrial settings, and previously proposed field methods have depended upon the use of special headphones which are not typically available in the workplace. These problems have led many occupational hearing conservationists to use standard audiometric headphones to evaluate the attenuation provided to employees using insert-type hearing-protective devices. There has, however, been little research into the validity of using standard audiometric …

Final preferendum change with environmental factors or associated physiological states.

Crayfish Pacifasticus leniusculus trowbridgii were injected with 0.2 ml suspension of alcohol-killed gram-negative Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria in 0.9% saline. Injections were into the coxopodite of the cheliped. The crayfish were monitored in an aquatic thermal gradient by …

The Unveiling, Elizabeth Heron Jan 1988

The Unveiling, Elizabeth Heron

Dissertations and Theses

The method I use in creating abstract sculpture presented the question that became the subject of my Master's thesis. Only occasionally will I create from a pre-conceived concept. The sculptures evolve through a process of addition and subtraction of material to something that simply pleases me. This method, really no method at all, seemed contradictory to my original intentions. My artistic goals were purposeful; I wanted to create sculpture that would provoke a reaction first, not a judgment of features. I wanted the viewers emotional and psychological involvement to be the basis for content and meaning in the work.

Patterns In Creativity : An Examination Of Viennese Culture And Politics At The Turn Of The Century, Allen Nolan Hauser

Dissertations and Theses

This examination explores the Viennese cultural milieu at the turn of the century in an effort to show the commonality of backgrounds and interests among those who created the culture during that period. In this the study aims at illustrating the similarities among those artists, intellectuals, and politicians in spite of the fact that their ideas helped lay the basis for the breakdown in integration of twentieth century culture which was illustrated by Carl E. Schorske in his Fin-De-Siecle Vienna: Politics and Culture. All this is in pursuance of the overall issue of the origin of the ideas which have …
