When Older Mothers Work : Adult Children's Perceptions Of Maternal Employment Effects Christine B. Nelson, Christine B. Nelson Jan 1990

When Older Mothers Work : Adult Children's Perceptions Of Maternal Employment Effects Christine B. Nelson, Christine B. Nelson

Dissertations and Theses

The effects of maternal employment on the young child have been examined for over 50 years. This research focuses on perceived maternal employment effects at a later point in the family life cycle: when mother is older and children are grown. Thirty-two poverty level women aged 56-83 (M=66.4 years) and their adult sons (n=l 6) and daughters (n= 16) were independently interviewed. All of the older women were paid workers or "stipended volunteers" who were employed part time (20 hours a week) in child care, clerical, or other service jobs. They had a variety of work histories; all were widowed …

All three groups were trained in the mirror drawing task and given three physical practice pre-trials for familiarization. The physical practice …

The Unified Speech Period Of A Bilingual Child, Gary Frank Wood Jan 1990

The Unified Speech Period Of A Bilingual Child, Gary Frank Wood

Dissertations and Theses

Previous studies of bilingual infants learning their languages simultaneously have suggested that such children go through what is known as a unified speech period in which they make no differentation between the languages in question and in which they frequently use mixed utterances (Arnberg, 1987; Grosjen, 1982; Leopold, 1939; & Skutnabb-Kangas, 1981). To test the validity of the claim that there is such a period, an English-Japanese bilingual child from one year and six months of age (1;6) through two years and six months of age (2;6) was observed and his speech recorded.

A Theoretical And Experimental Study Of The Three-Ring Electrostatic Electron Lens, Thomas Anthony Sommer Jan 1990

A Theoretical And Experimental Study Of The Three-Ring Electrostatic Electron Lens, Thomas Anthony Sommer

Dissertations and Theses

A theoretical and experimental study of the three-ring electrostatic lens is presented. The lens consists of three isolated ring-shaped conductors, equally spaced along a common axis of symmetry. When appropriate potentials are applied to the conductors an electric field is produced near the axis which is capable of focusing a collimated beam of electrons. In the theoretical study the charge density method is used to find a closed-form solution for the field. This method approximates the field by replacing each ring with an infinitely thin hoop of uniform charge. The radial and axial equations of motion are then solved numerically, …

Methionine Metabolism In Fasciola Hepatica, Carol Theresa Ayer Jan 1990

Methionine Metabolism In Fasciola Hepatica, Carol Theresa Ayer

Dissertations and Theses

5'-Deoxy-5'-methylthioadenosine (MTA) is derived from s-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) during the synthesis of the polyamines spermidine and spermine. Methionine can be regenerated from MTA by one of two mechanisms. In mammalian cells and some microorganisms, MTA is degraded to adenine and 5-methylthioribose-1-phosphate (MTR-1-P) via MTA phosphorylase. In certain other microbes, however, MTA is catabolized in two steps; first to adenine and 5-methylthioribose (MTR) via MTA nucleosidase followed by conversion of MTR to MTR-1-P via MTR kinase.

This study was to demonstrate the presence of MTA nucleosidase or MTA phosphorylase in both redia containing cercariae and adult Fasciola hepatica Linnaeus, 1758. If MTA …

Dissertations and Theses

A basic relationship between stethoscopic auscultation and background noise interference was reviewed and examined in this study. The principle experimental design of the study questioned whether hospital background noise levels are capable of masking the threshold of detection for auscultated heart sounds. Several cited studies monitoring background noise levels in various hospital locations have reported averages exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (1974) and World Health Organization (WHO) (1980) recommendations of "quiet", namely 35 to 40 dBA (Falk & Woods, 1973; Hilton, 1985, 1987; Shapiro & Berland, 1972; Turner, et al., 1975; Woods & Falk, 1974) by as much …

The Use Of Phonological Process Assessment For Differentiating Developmental Apraxia Of Speech From Functional Articulation Disorders, Kathryn Dearmond Jan 1990

The Use Of Phonological Process Assessment For Differentiating Developmental Apraxia Of Speech From Functional Articulation Disorders, Kathryn Dearmond

Dissertations and Theses

Focus has turned from emphasis on phonetic sound errors to phonologic rule systems in the study of articulation disorders. The current theory proposes that the phonological disorders which children experience are controlled by higher levels in the brain than those that control the motor functioning of the brain. The purpose of the present study was to compare the use of phonological processes by a group of school-age children with moderate to severe multiple articulation disorders (MAD) with developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) to the phonological processes used by those without developmental apraxia of speech. For the purposes of this study, …

On A Women's Language, Tamara Brown Jan 1990

On A Women's Language, Tamara Brown

Dissertations and Theses

Assessing the feminist belief that women have a perspective dramatically differing from the patriarchal perspective, and that this viewpoint is, or could be, couched in a language differing from the norm, this researcher addressed the following three questions: (1) is there a definition of a women's language? (2) does a women's language exist? and (3) if a women's language does exist, in what form does it exist? These questions engendered feminist rhetorical criticism on the work of two radical feminists well known for their interest in, and attention to, the issue of a women's language.

Instrumentation For Multi-Electrode Voltammetry, I-Pin Ho Jan 1990

Instrumentation For Multi-Electrode Voltammetry, I-Pin Ho

Dissertations and Theses

When metal pollutants exist in natural water, their toxicity is dramatically dependent on the chemical species. Numerous sophisticated techniques and instruments have been developed to detect metal pollutants at very low concentration levels. However, one important factor is often ignored, i.e., rarely is species determination required. Electrochemical (EC) methods have the particular advantage of being, in principle, a species-sensitive method rather than an element-sensitive method for the study of metal speciation in natural waters.

The goal of this research was to develop an instrument using the EC technique for speciation and general voltammetric studies. It was accomplished by designing a …

In addition, instructors with occupations in social services and education had significantly higher mean teaching effectiveness scores than those from other occupations. Finally, there was an inverse relationship between age and teaching effectiveness in this study, and a positive relationship between teaching experience …

Optimization And Thermodynamic Performance Measures Of A Class Of Finite Time Thermodynamic Cycles, Joseph D. Walters Jan 1990

Optimization And Thermodynamic Performance Measures Of A Class Of Finite Time Thermodynamic Cycles, Joseph D. Walters

Dissertations and Theses

Modifications to the quasistatic Carnot cycle are developed in order to formulate improved theoretical bounds on the thermal efficiency of certain refrigeration cycles that produce finite cooling power. The modified refrigeration cycle is based on the idealized endoreversible finite time cycle. Two of the four cycle branches are reversible adiabats, and the other two are the high and low temperature branches along which finite heat fluxes couple the refrigeration cycle with external heat reservoirs.

This finite time model has been used to obtain the following results: First, the performance of a finite time Carnot refrigeration cycle (FTCRC) is examined. In …

The Effect Of Two Viologens On The Solution Speciation Of Tetrakis([Rho]-Carboxyphenyl)Porphine, Suzanne Elizabeth Clarke Jan 1990

The Effect Of Two Viologens On The Solution Speciation Of Tetrakis([Rho]-Carboxyphenyl)Porphine, Suzanne Elizabeth Clarke

Dissertations and Theses

Porphyrins and viologens are often utilized in photocatalyzed electron transfer chemistry. Some of the problems faced by researchers in these applied studies include the lack of information correlating the porphyrin absorbance spectral changes with porphyrin dimerization, complexation, and the effect of noncomplexing cations. In addition, the efficiency of the system is greatly reduced by the formation of porphyrin:viologen association complexes. Knowledge of the values of these constants may allow selection of appropriate porphyrin:viologen concentration ratios which would enable optimization of these systems when used in such applications as artificial photosynthesis. This study reports the effect of selected salts and solvents …

Speechreading Ability In Elementary School-Age Children With And Without Functional Articulation Disorders, Barbara L. Habermann

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare the speechreading abilities of elementary school-age children with mild to severe articulation disorders with those of children with normal articulation. Speechreading ability, as determined by a speechreading test, indicates how well a person recognizes the visual cues of speech. Speech sounds that have similar visual characteristics have been defined as visemes by Jackson in 1988 and can be categorized into distinct groups based on their place of articulation. A relationship between recognition of these visemes and correct articulation was first proposed by Woodward and Barber in 1960. Dodd, in 1983, noted that …

Phrasal Verbs In Academic Lectures, Robert D. Pierce Jan 1990

Phrasal Verbs In Academic Lectures, Robert D. Pierce

Dissertations and Theses

Phrasal verbs are a pervasive and distinctly Germanic part of the spoken English language that has been alive for centuries. They have preceded American history, and yet considered to be "the most active and creative pattern and word formation in the American language" (Meyer, 1975). Distinctly colloquial, idiomatic and varying in shades of literalness and figurativity, phrasal verbs are largely dominant in casual usage, such as conversation, while the Latinate verbs of English are dominant in formal usage, such as in making reports (McArthur 1989). While foreign educators and their students, such as from Chinese countries, are found to emphasize …
