Life Without Oxygen: Cellular Mechanisms Enabling Genome Maintenance And Proliferation In Cells From An Anoxia-Tolerant Vertebrate, Riley Asa Roth-Carter
Life Without Oxygen: Cellular Mechanisms Enabling Genome Maintenance And Proliferation In Cells From An Anoxia-Tolerant Vertebrate, Riley Asa Roth-Carter
Dissertations and Theses
When exposed to the complete loss of oxygen (anoxia) most organisms undergo rapid cellular deterioration driven by a range of metabolic dysfunctions associated with the loss of the terminal electron acceptor for aerobic respiration. This loss of ability to create and maintain necessary levels of cellular ATP through oxidative phosphorylation contributes to loss of membrane potentials, increase in the accumulation of acidic by-products of anaerobic metabolism, and a decrease in the ability to support other molecular processes that rely on a steady supply of ATP. While this extreme oxygen stress is lethal to a majority of vertebrate organisms there are …
Japanese Learners And Mixed-Speech Styles, Nana Kawada
Japanese Learners And Mixed-Speech Styles, Nana Kawada
Dissertations and Theses
This study explores to what extent Japanese as a Target Language (JTL, henceforth) learners use mixed-speech styles. "Mixed-speech styles" refers to the phenomenon that occurs when speakers shift speech styles during the course of an interaction. The three primary speech styles are (1) the desu/masu forms, which are generally considered formal speech-level markers, (2) the non-desu/masu forms, considered informal speech-level markers, and (3) the Chūto shūryō-gata, which I translate to unfinished utterances that do not contain a clear style-marker.
The studies examined naturally occurring conversation point out that Japanese speakers often strategically manipulate and mix these speech styles …
Intersectionality And Insurgent Citizenship: Women Of Color Feminism In 1970s New York City, Genevieve Bonner Davis
Intersectionality And Insurgent Citizenship: Women Of Color Feminism In 1970s New York City, Genevieve Bonner Davis
Dissertations and Theses
Not since the phrase "Ain't I a Woman" has African American women's intellectual leadership and insight been as visible and influential as the contemporary concept of intersectionality. Like Sojourner Truth's iconic intellectual intervention in the anti-slavery movement, intersectionality has experienced a similar trajectory of dissolution, distortion, appropriation, and popularization. Since its articulation by Black legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, intersectionality theory has had a bumpy road to its buzzy, if controversial, status in the firmament of twenty-first-century political thought.
This thesis traces the origins of intersectionality theory through three distinct but intertwined phases. Phase one is the genealogy of …
Toward Contextual Adaptation And Knowledge Grounding In Large Language Models, Yufei Tao
Toward Contextual Adaptation And Knowledge Grounding In Large Language Models, Yufei Tao
Dissertations and Theses
Large language models (LLMs) are now expected to adapt to context in ways that are both socially appropriate and informationally faithful. This dissertation argues that contextual adaptation and contextual grounding are the unifying problems behind that expectation: models must adjust to interactional settings such as role-play while also grounding their outputs in the information supplied at inference time. Across four studies, the dissertation examines how LLMs respond to social cues, how they balance contextual and parametric knowledge, how multilingual long-context settings reveal grounding failures, and how decode-time control can improve reliability.
The first study analyzes the ChatGPT Role-play Dataset (CRD) …
Psychosocial Risk Factors And Recidivism Among Violent Offenders, Abbey Elizabeth Burgess
Psychosocial Risk Factors And Recidivism Among Violent Offenders, Abbey Elizabeth Burgess
Dissertations and Theses
This study examined whether changes in LS/CMI domain scores between prison intake and release were associated with three-year recidivism among violent offenders following their release from custody. While the Risk-Need-Responsivity (RNR) framework emphasizes the importance of targeting dynamic criminogenic needs to reduce reoffending, relatively little research has assessed whether changes in domain-level risk factors translate into improved outcomes over time. Using administrative data from a state correctional system, this study analyzed domain-level changes in LS/CMI scores and their relationship to rearrest, while controlling for demographic characteristics, criminal history, and institutional factors. Results indicated that changes in most LS/CMI domains were …

Shoplifting: Analyzing Spatial And Temporal Patterns, Elizabeth Petrenko
Shoplifting: Analyzing Spatial And Temporal Patterns, Elizabeth Petrenko
Dissertations and Theses
Shoplifting has contributed to significant losses in Oregon, reaching nearly $956 million in 2022. While overall property crime in Portland, Oregon, dropped between 2023 and 2024, reported shoplifting incidents increased by 50.0%. In Oregon, stealing property worth $100 or less is third-degree theft and a Class C misdemeanor. Second-degree theft involving stealing property between $100 and $1,000 is a Class A misdemeanor. Although often classified as petty or minor theft, shoplifting imposes strain on retailers, consumers, and communities, which raises questions about the spatial and temporal distribution of this crime. This study uses Portland Police Bureau (PPB) offense data to …
Justice By Geography: District-Level Variation In Pretrial Release Outcomes Across Oregon, Ethan Loomis
Justice By Geography: District-Level Variation In Pretrial Release Outcomes Across Oregon, Ethan Loomis
Dissertations and Theses
AbstractOregon’s pretrial system operates under a common statewide legal framework, yet detention and release outcomes do not appear fully consistent across jurisdictions. Earlier research on pretrial decision-making has largely focused on judicial discretion, individual-level legal factors, and the use of risk assessment tools, while giving less attention to the district-level environments in which those decisions are made. This study examines whether variation in institutional capacity, political context, demographic composition, and socioeconomic conditions corresponds with differences in pretrial outcomes across Oregon’s circuit court districts.
The study draws from focal concerns theory, racial threat perspectives, and organizational approaches to court decision-making. Rather …
Arylation Of Nitrogen, Oxygen And Carbon Nucleophiles By Aryl(Tmp)Iodonium Salts, Joseph Jordan Hatton
Arylation Of Nitrogen, Oxygen And Carbon Nucleophiles By Aryl(Tmp)Iodonium Salts, Joseph Jordan Hatton
Dissertations and Theses
Substituted aromatic rings are present in industry in a plethora of organic molecules such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, materials and beyond. Therefore, methods for broadly installing aryl rings into other compounds to create substituted aromatic rings are valuable to many organic chemists. Historically these transformations are achieved through methods such as nucleophilic aromatic substitution and metal catalyzed cross-coupling. Nucleophilic aromatic substitution is a user-friendly method in this space but is limited by reliance on specific electronics. Metal catalyzed cross-coupling reduced the dependence on electronics in this space, but metals are generally unattractive reagents due to high costs, toxicity and challenges with …
Improving Explainability And Interpretability Of Neural Networks Via Hyperparameter-Extended Influence Functions, William Breslin
Improving Explainability And Interpretability Of Neural Networks Via Hyperparameter-Extended Influence Functions, William Breslin
Dissertations and Theses
Understanding how model predictions and training outcomes vary with changes in data, features, and modeling choices is central to explainable artificial intelligence. This dissertation introduces a unified framework for explainability by generalizing classical influence functions to encompass user-defined hyperparameters embedded in the training loss, model architecture, or data representation. By extending influence functions in this way, the framework broadens their applicability and integrates multiple explainability techniques into a single, coherent approach. It provides a common mathematical foundation linking data impact, feature importance, and model design analysis, and supports a broad class of additional explainability analyses beyond these settings. The demonstrated …

Design And Implementation Of Error Estimators For Finite Element Eigenvalue Problems, Gabriel Esteban Pinochet Soto
Dissertations and Theses
We present three publications, all encompassed under the umbrella of a posteriori error estimation theory for eigenvalue problems for finite element discretizations. The central objective of the research is the development of a general framework for the study of reliable estimation of eigenvalues and eigenspaces. We introduce applications to problems of theoretical interest as well as problems arising in real-life scenarios, such as optical fibers. The first paper focuses on the implementation of a dual-weighted residual error estimator for a nonselfadjoint eigenvalue problems arising from the study of leaky modes in optical fibers---Maxwell's equations, Perfectly Matched Layers, and a conforming …
Local And Indigenous Knowledge, Innovation, And Sustainable Development: Creating Sustainable Futures Amidst Crisis Conditions At The Community Level, Carlos Andrés Arias
Local And Indigenous Knowledge, Innovation, And Sustainable Development: Creating Sustainable Futures Amidst Crisis Conditions At The Community Level, Carlos Andrés Arias
Dissertations and Theses
In 1987, the Brundtland Commission's Our Common Future (1987) made clear the need to reject longstanding development processes and focus on sustainable development. The Commission stressed that actual sustainable development integrates three elements: social development, economic development, and environmental protection. Though developed nations have achieved economic growth through conventional and extractive development practices, these practices have intensified natural disasters driven by climate change, increased food insecurity, and deepened poverty. This has acutely impacted Indigenous and local communities, many of whom face crisis conditions, such as war, terrorism, civil disorder, and their aftermath. Even so, many of these communities successfully implement …

Haapxtàm Ka'Ál Yimisapʰíkʰ We Dream For Our Children Indigenous Pedagogies In Early Childhood Education: Survivance, Truth Telling, And Healing On Native Land, Sara Anne Koyano
Dissertations and Theses
Since Time Immemorial, Indigenous Peoples have lived, learned, and thrived on this continent, exercising their inherent sovereignty as Original Peoples and passing down Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and learning across generations. US settler colonial violence and assimilation policies have had historical and contemporary detrimental impacts on Native children, families, and communities by attempting to disrupt the intergenerational transmission of Indigenous knowledges. Consequently, many young Native children in Oregon do not have access to educational opportunities that value, honor, and affirm their Indigenous identities and cultures, nor do they see themselves reflected in their classrooms and curricula. Furthermore, in 2019, …
Heat Pump Water Heater Cta-2045 Implementation Guidance For Maximizing Demand Response Impact, Dana Kahiwahiwa Paresa
Heat Pump Water Heater Cta-2045 Implementation Guidance For Maximizing Demand Response Impact, Dana Kahiwahiwa Paresa
Dissertations and Theses
Residential flexible loads, such as heat pump water heaters, have great potential for grid reliability services; however, their effectiveness depends on reliable performance in response to coordinated grid service requests. While the ANSI/CTA-2045-B protocol standardizes communication, it does not mandate specific functional behaviors, creating a mismatch in which the device may comply with the communication protocol but fail to meet performance expectations. This manuscript demonstrates the need for a ANSI/CTA-2045-B implementation guide by quantifying these discrepancies through gray-box conformance testing of market-available units followed by large-scale simulations.
Field testing results revealed a significant conformance gap. Tested units exhibited an average …

Modeling The Combined Effects Of Forest Fire And Climate Change On Snow-Water Storage In The Oregon Cascades, Joseph D. Vigil
Dissertations and Theses
Forest fire and climate change are reshaping the snow hydrology of the Pacific Northwest of the United States, yet the combined effects of these disturbances on snow accumulation, storage, and melt timing remain poorly quantified in these Mediterranean mountain watersheds. This study integrates field-based snow and radiation observations with physically based modelling to evaluate how postfire forest structure, postfire snow albedo decay, and future climate change influence snow-water storage in the Breitenbush watershed of the western Oregon Cascades. This work was conducted as part of a broader U.S. Army Corps of Engineers effort to improve postfire hydrologic prediction and flood …

Evaluating The Impact Of Leading Pedestrian Intervals And Curb Extensions On Conflict Frequency And Severity, Sophia Semensky
Evaluating The Impact Of Leading Pedestrian Intervals And Curb Extensions On Conflict Frequency And Severity, Sophia Semensky
Dissertations and Theses
Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) and curb extensions are commonly implemented countermeasures intended to improve pedestrian safety at signalized intersections. While LPIs have a well-established crash reduction record, fewer studies have evaluated their impacts using surrogate safety measures or examined how curb extensions interact with LPIs to influence pedestrian-vehicle conflicts. This thesis investigates the effects of LPIs and curb extensions on pedestrian safety using detailed conflict data collected at eleven signalized intersections in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area.
Approximately 600 hours of video data were collected across four matched intersection pairs and three before–after sites. Pedestrian and vehicular volumes, turning speeds, …

Reinvesting In A Lived Experience Workforce: An Exploration Of Why Peer Support Specialists Leave The Field, Morgan Rae Pelot
Dissertations and Theses
Peer support specialists (PSSs) are individuals who use their lived experience of mental health challenges along with formal training to provide peer support to other individuals experiencing similar challenges. PSSs have only become integrated into the mental health care system within the last several decades. Recently, a study reported a trend of PSSs leaving the field of peer support, but there is a gap in the literature exploring factors that may influence this decision. This study examined if self-efficacy, motivations to join the workforce, and negative work experiences were related to workforce retention. A secondary cross-sectional analysis was conducted on …
Relational Histories: Exploring The Transmission Of Ceramic Technology In The Norton Sound Region Through Petrographic Analysis, Laurel Michelle Diciuccio
Relational Histories: Exploring The Transmission Of Ceramic Technology In The Norton Sound Region Through Petrographic Analysis, Laurel Michelle Diciuccio
Dissertations and Theses
Ceramic technology in the Bering Strait region of the North American Arctic dates to approximately 2,500 BP and is broadly divided into two traditions: the Early Arctic (Norton, pre-1,500 BP) and the Late Arctic (Thule, post-1,500 BP). While Arctic ceramic studies have focused on raw material sourcing, vessel use, and cooking performance, this research investigates forming methods and ceramic fabrics to better understand their place in the technological behavioral chain. This approach fills a gap in the literature by centering on vessel construction and offers new insights from Norton Sound sites, including type sites Iyatayet and Nukleet.
Macroscopic and petrographic …

Scale-Dependent Particle Transport Over Urban-Like Roughness In Turbulent Flow, Rae Riddle
Scale-Dependent Particle Transport Over Urban-Like Roughness In Turbulent Flow, Rae Riddle
Dissertations and Theses
This study employs direct numerical simulation (DNS) to investigate the dispersion of inertial particles in turbulent flow over three-dimensional urban-like roughness at Reτ = 200. Particles with Stokes numbers St = 5, 25, and 100 are tracked over cubic arrays with spanwise spacings Sy from 2h to 32h, where h = δ/8 and δ is the half-channel height, alongside a smooth-wall reference case. The results reveal scale-dependent particle responses characterized by three distinct regimes. First, high-inertia particles (St = 100) align strongly with mean secondary flows, exhibiting organized plumes above roughness elements. Their vertical transport peaks at intermediate spacing …
Arid: Agglomerative Regionalization Via Information Divergence, A Novel Clustering Algorithm For Geo-Spatial Data, Joshua David Sills
Arid: Agglomerative Regionalization Via Information Divergence, A Novel Clustering Algorithm For Geo-Spatial Data, Joshua David Sills
Dissertations and Theses
Regionalization is a clustering problem that seeks to partition geospatial data into geographically contiguous regions while remaining internally homogeneous in their attributes. It has been successfully applied towards the development of urban planning, natural resource discovery, and ecological analysis. Existing popular approaches optimize homogeneity using Euclidean or variance-based criteria, which ignore distributional differences such as variance shifts, multimodality, and higher-order dependence. This thesis introduces ARID (Agglomerative Regionalization via Information Divergence), a spatially constrained agglomerative clustering framework that replaces distance-based merging with an information-theoretic, Ward-like criterion that utilizes the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence. ARID constructs a neighborhood graph from coordinate space and …

This study conceptualizes peace education as a structural and relational mechanism embedded within institutional routines, leadership practices, and conflict-management responses. Using a qualitative integrative review design, the study examines peer-reviewed research, policy documents, and institutional analyses relevant to Oman, the Gulf region, and broader peace education scholarship. The analysis is guided by theoretical …
Reasoning In Large Language Models Across Multilingual, Long-Context, And Symbolic Settings, Sina Bagheri Nezhad
Reasoning In Large Language Models Across Multilingual, Long-Context, And Symbolic Settings, Sina Bagheri Nezhad
Dissertations and Theses
Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed as general-purpose reasoners, yet their reliability degrades in three settings that frequently arise in practice: multilingual inputs, long contexts, and symbolic or formally constrained domains. In multilingual settings, uneven training coverage produces substantial performance disparities and uncertain generalization to languages with little or negligible pretraining exposure. In long-context settings, relevant evidence may be sparsely distributed, and models exhibit the "lost-in-the-middle" phenomenon, undermining retrieval and multi-step synthesis. In symbolic settings such as mathematics, small arithmetic or logical slips invalidate solutions, and prose rationales are difficult to verify automatically.
This dissertation first characterizes these failure …
Effects Of Fib-Based Sample Preparation On Semiconductor Strain Characterization, Daniel Carl Hedinger
Effects Of Fib-Based Sample Preparation On Semiconductor Strain Characterization, Daniel Carl Hedinger
Dissertations and Theses
Channel strain engineering has been an important topic in semiconductor manufacturing due to the significant carrier mobility gains it can provide. The need for strain characterization at the individual device level, combined with the rapidly shrinking size of semiconductor devices, has led to development of various transmission electron microscopy (TEM) based strain characterization methods including nano beam electron diffraction (NBD). These methods rely on focused ion beam (FIB) sample preparation to produce election transparent TEM samples. This dissertation studies the effect of different FIB sample preparation modalities on the measured strain in p-type 14nm FinFET devices. TEM samples were produced …

Dissertations and Theses
The usage of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-based tracker devices for stalking has become a salient privacy concern. Detecting unwanted or suspicious trackers is challenging due to their cross-platform compatibility issues, inconsistent detection methods, and lack of an industry-wide standard for detecting malicious devices. BL(u)E CRAB, Bluetooth Low Energy Connection Risk Assessment Benchmarking, scans data and generates risk factors about nearby devices to classify them as suspicious or not. These risk factors include the number of encounters the user had with a device, the duration of time a device has been near the user, the distance a device has traveled …
Effect Of Degree Of Saturation On The Liquefaction Resistance Of Non-Plastic And Low-Plastic Soils, Kayla Rae Sorenson
Effect Of Degree Of Saturation On The Liquefaction Resistance Of Non-Plastic And Low-Plastic Soils, Kayla Rae Sorenson
Dissertations and Theses
Liquefaction and cyclic softening of fine-grained soils pose a significant hazard during earthquakes, yet the cyclic behavior of transitional soils such as silts remains poorly understood. Existing empirical liquefaction evaluation frameworks and ground improvement techniques are largely developed for sands and are not directly applicable to silts, particularly beneath existing infrastructure where conventional mitigation methods are often impractical or cost prohibitive. This knowledge gap is critical in regions such as the Pacific Northwest, where young, loosely deposited silts are prevalent and susceptible to seismic loading.
Microbially induced desaturation (MID) has emerged in recent years as a promising, minimally invasive ground …
Evaluating The Implementation Of Oregon's Dsm-5-Informed Autism Eligibility Revisions: Interest-Holder Perspectives And Policy Implications, Bradley Josef Hendershott
Evaluating The Implementation Of Oregon's Dsm-5-Informed Autism Eligibility Revisions: Interest-Holder Perspectives And Policy Implications, Bradley Josef Hendershott
Dissertations and Theses
Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), states establish their own autism spectrum disorder (ASD) eligibility criteria, resulting in substantial interstate variation and frequent misalignment with medical diagnostic standards. In 2019, Oregon revised its ASD eligibility criteria by directly incorporating DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, reflecting proponents' theory of action that this alignment would improve conceptual clarity, identification accuracy, and coherence across educational and medical systems. While an early implementation study documented generally positive early effects reported by evaluators, no research has systematically examined whether the DSM-5 alignment achieved its anticipated effects, how the revised criteria function after multiple years of …
Examining Fort Vancouver Curatorial Practices: How Do Museums Interact With And Represent The Public?, Karryn Meharchand Pillay
Examining Fort Vancouver Curatorial Practices: How Do Museums Interact With And Represent The Public?, Karryn Meharchand Pillay
Dissertations and Theses
Historically, the work of curators has always been somewhat opaque and mysterious to the public, with knowledge of curatorial practices only being passed from mentor to student, creating a small elite of those in the know, which is something that has only begun to change in the modern era (Meyer-Krahmer 2015). So, if museum operations are not accessible to the public, what does that mean for communities whose culture and history are being presented by the museum? How are they meant to reclaim their cultural heritage? How are they supposed to approach conversations regarding misrepresentation in museum exhibits?
Through this …
