Foundational Knowledge And Other Predictors Of Commitment To Trauma-Informed Care, Stephanie Anne Sundborg
Foundational Knowledge And Other Predictors Of Commitment To Trauma-Informed Care, Stephanie Anne Sundborg
Dissertations and Theses
Trauma-informed care (TIC) is an approach to service delivery based on the understanding of the prevalence of psychological trauma among service users, knowledge about the impact trauma has on engagement to services, and recognition that service settings can be re-traumatizing. For more than a decade, momentum has been building on this topic. Practitioners are pursuing the knowledge and skills needed to implement trauma-informed service delivery, while organizations are building infrastructure and processes aimed at supporting this approach. Disciplines across many human service sectors are eager to incorporate TIC into policy and practice. Despite this enthusiasm, implementation efforts are slow. Acquiring …
Investigation Into Effects Of Instability And Reactivity Of Hydride-Passivated Silicon Nanoparticles On Interband Photoluminescence, Christine Marie Radlinger
Investigation Into Effects Of Instability And Reactivity Of Hydride-Passivated Silicon Nanoparticles On Interband Photoluminescence, Christine Marie Radlinger
Dissertations and Theses
While silicon has long been utilized for its electronic properties, its use as an optical material has largely been limited due to the poor efficiency of interband transitions. However, discovery of visible photoluminescence (PL) from nanocrystalline silicon in 1990 triggered many ensuing research efforts to optimize PL from nanocrystalline silicon for optical applications. Currently, use of photoluminescent silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) is commercially limited by: 1) the instability of the energy and intensity of the PL, and 2) the low quantum yield of interband PL from Si NPs.
Herein, red-emitting, hydrogen-passivated silicon nanoparticles (H-Si NPs) were synthesized by thermally-induced disproportionation …
Communicating At Terahertz Frequencies, Farnoosh Moshirfatemi
Communicating At Terahertz Frequencies, Farnoosh Moshirfatemi
Dissertations and Theses
The number of users who get access to wireless links is increasing each day and many new applications require very high data rates. The increasing demand for higher data rates has led to the development of new techniques to increase spectrum efficiency to achieve this goal. However, the limited bandwidth of the frequency bands that are currently used for wireless communication bounds the maximum data rate possible.
In the past few years, researchers have developed new devices that work as Terahertz (THz) transmitters and receivers. The development of these devices and the large available bandwidth of the THz band is …
Influence Of Mixing And Buoyancy On Competition Between Cyanobacteria Species In Upper Klamath Lake, Roberta Joann Brunkalla
Influence Of Mixing And Buoyancy On Competition Between Cyanobacteria Species In Upper Klamath Lake, Roberta Joann Brunkalla
Dissertations and Theses
Cyanobacterial blooms in lakes impact human health, the economy, and ecosystem health. It is predicted that climate change will promote and increase the frequency and intensity of cyanobacterial blooms due to unique physiological adaptions that allow cyanobacteria to exploit warm stable water bodies. Key cyanobacteria physiological adaptions include nitrogen fixation, buoyancy regulation and higher optimum growth temperatures. The largest uncertainty of predicting the effect of climate change is in understanding how the interactions among species will change. Adding to the ambiguity, cyanobacteria physiological adaptions can vary based on lakespecific ecotypes and can have different sensitivities to temperature. It is critical …
Why Do Animals Do What They Do, When They Do It? Characterizing The Role Of The Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis In Seasonal Life-History Transitions, Catherine Anne Dayger Forbes
Why Do Animals Do What They Do, When They Do It? Characterizing The Role Of The Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis In Seasonal Life-History Transitions, Catherine Anne Dayger Forbes
Dissertations and Theses
Resource availability follows seasonal cycles in environmental conditions. To align physiology and behavior with prevailing environmental conditions, seasonal animals integrate cues from the environment with their internal state. One of the systems animals use to integrate those cues is the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and its primary effector, glucocorticoid hormones. The HPA axis has wide-ranging effects on physiology and behavior and, in the context of a glucocorticoid stress response, is known to mediate tradeoffs between immediate survival and future fitness. The HPA axis also plays an important role in facilitating predictable life-history events. Variation in HPA axis activity has been reported …
Let The Seeds Fall Where They May: Investigating The Effect Of Landscape Features On Fine-Scale Seed Dispersal, Monica R. Grasty
Let The Seeds Fall Where They May: Investigating The Effect Of Landscape Features On Fine-Scale Seed Dispersal, Monica R. Grasty
Dissertations and Theses
Seed dispersal is a crucial ecological and evolutionary process that allows plants to colonize sites and expand their ranges, while also reducing inbreeding depression and facilitating the spread of adaptive genetic variation. However, our fundamental understanding of seed dispersal is limited due to the difficulty of directly observing dispersal events. In recent years, genetic marker methods have furthered our understanding of colonization and range expansion due to seed dispersal. Most investigations focus on regional scales of dispersal, due to low levels of variation in the chloroplast genome (cpDNA), which can serve as an indirect measure of seed dispersal. Here, I …

Preparing Historically Underserved Students For Stem Careers: The Role Of An Inquiry-Based High School Science Sequence Beginning With Physics, Jon P. Bridges
Dissertations and Theses
Improving the STEM readiness of students from historically underserved groups is a moral and economic imperative requiring greater attention and effort than has been shown to date. The current literature suggests a high school science sequence beginning with physics and centered on developing conceptual understanding, using inquiry labs and modeling to allow students to explore new ideas, and addressing and correcting student misconceptions can increase student interest in and preparation for STEM careers.
The purpose of this study was to determine if the science college readiness of historically underserved students can be improved by implementing an inquiry-based high school science …
Responses Of Aquatic Non-Native Species To Novel Predator Cues And Increased Mortality, Brian Christopher Turner
Responses Of Aquatic Non-Native Species To Novel Predator Cues And Increased Mortality, Brian Christopher Turner
Dissertations and Theses
Lethal biotic interactions strongly influence the potential for aquatic non-native species to establish and endure in habitats to which they are introduced. Predators in the recipient area, including native and previously established non-native predators, can prevent establishment, limit habitat use, and reduce abundance of non-native species. Management efforts by humans using methods designed to cause mass mortality (e.g., trapping, biocide applications) can reduce or eradicate non-native populations. However, the impacts of predator and human induced mortality may be mitigated by the behavior or population-level responses of a given non-native species.
My dissertation examined the responses of non-native aquatic species to …
Survive Or Thrive: A Mixed Method Study Of Visiting Chinese Language Teachers' Identity Formation In The U.S. Classrooms, Li Xiang
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years in the United States, an increasing number of people are learning Mandarin, the dominant Chinese language in China. Because of the shortage of Mandarin teachers, many visiting teachers from China with Chinese educational background are teaching Mandarin in the U.S. schools. In the U.S. classrooms, these teachers are challenged to adapt to a new setting. This experience can lead them to changing their teaching identity, that is, their basic beliefs, attitudes and practices about teaching. Understanding how Chinese teachers may form a new teaching identity in the U.S. context serves to inform future professional development activities designed …
The Force Of Manhood: The Consequences Of Masculinity Threat On Police Officer Use Of Force, Aurelia Terese Alston
The Force Of Manhood: The Consequences Of Masculinity Threat On Police Officer Use Of Force, Aurelia Terese Alston
Dissertations and Theses
Positive community-police relations, which are based on mutual trust, are key to equitable and just policing. Use of force that is perceived as unfair and biased can quickly undermine relations between the police and the public. In an attempt to understand what psychological factors contribute to police use of force decisions and potentially racially biased use of force application, this study proposed masculinity threat as an important psychological factor that influences police behavior. Masculinity threat occurs when a man's status as a man is threatened, and threats to masculinity are often associated with increased aggression and dominance as a way …
A Pilot Study On Methods To Introduce Teachers To New Science Standards, Noelle Frances Garcia Niedo
A Pilot Study On Methods To Introduce Teachers To New Science Standards, Noelle Frances Garcia Niedo
Dissertations and Theses
With the recent adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards in Oregon, there is a great need for teachers to be trained to effectively implement the three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in their teaching. Time and location are the largest constraining factors that affect teacher participation in professional development trainings. To address this constraint, Tryon Creek State Park offered a NGSS professional development training opportunity for teachers that was integrated within a field trip that they took their students on. Before the field trip, teachers were introduced to the NGSS through a set of NGSS pre-field …
"As Long As The Mighty Columbia River Flows": The Leadership And Legacy Of Wilson Charley, A Yakama Indian Fisherman, David-Paul Brewster Hedberg
"As Long As The Mighty Columbia River Flows": The Leadership And Legacy Of Wilson Charley, A Yakama Indian Fisherman, David-Paul Brewster Hedberg
Dissertations and Theses
On March 10, 1957, the United States Army Corps of Engineers completed The Dalles Dam and inundated Celilo Falls, the oldest continuously inhabited site in North America and a cultural and economic hub for Indigenous people. In the negotiation of treaties between the United States, nearly one hundred years earlier, Indigenous leaders reserved access to Columbia River fishing sites as they ceded territory and retained smaller reservations. In the years before the dam's completion, leaders, many of who were the descendants of earlier treaty signatories, attempted to stop the dam and protect both fishing sites from the encroachment of state …

An Ir And Rf Based System For Functional Gait Analysis In A Multi-Resident Smart-Home, Erich Reinhardt Schafermeyer
Dissertations and Theses
Changes in the gait characteristics, such as walking speed and stride length, of a person living at home can be used to presage cognitive decline, predict fall potential, monitor long-term changes in cognitive impairment, test drug regimens, and more. This thesis presents a novel approach to gait analysis in a smart-home environment by leveraging new advances in inexpensive sensors and embedded systems to create novel solutions for in-home gait analysis. Using a simple, non-invasive hardware system consisting entirely of wall-mounted infrared and radio frequency sensor arrays, data is collected on the gait of subjects as they pass by. This data …
A Study Of Shame-Proneness, Drinking Behaviors, And Workplace Role Ambiguity Among A Sample Of Student Workers, Sarah Nielsen Haverly
A Study Of Shame-Proneness, Drinking Behaviors, And Workplace Role Ambiguity Among A Sample Of Student Workers, Sarah Nielsen Haverly
Dissertations and Theses
As many as 50% of full time students are employed for pay while enrolled in secondary education (Condition of Education; Planty et al., 2009). It is well documented that college is a vulnerable time for heavy drinking, and similarly, increased consumption among the workforce continues to rise. Student workers, who occupy both roles, therefore may be particularly at risk. The present research explored potential factors related to this stressful dual role experience, which was hypothesized to be related to increased alcohol consumption. One such factor proposed was the self-conscious emotion of shame. According to Hull's (1981) Self Awareness Model, individuals …
Adaptive Evolution Under Favorable And Unfavorable Population Genetic Conditions In Caenorhabditis Elegans Nematodes, Stephen Fuller Christy
Adaptive Evolution Under Favorable And Unfavorable Population Genetic Conditions In Caenorhabditis Elegans Nematodes, Stephen Fuller Christy
Dissertations and Theses
Mutation is a fundamental process that drives evolutionary change; however, most new mutations are deleterious for organismal fitness and can readily propagate within populations under a broad range of conditions. Mutational processes able to counteract deleterious mutation accumulation include: 1) reversion mutation back to wildtype, 2) acquisition of generally beneficial mutations, and 3) compensatory mutations that specifically mitigate the effects of previously-acquired deleterious mutations through epistasis. The potential for any of these mutation types alters our expectations for the impact of deleterious mutation in populations, but since the fitness effects of individual mutations are rarely characterized, the relative importance of …
Modeling Of Ultrafine Particle Emissions And Ambient Levels For The Near Roadside Environment, Sauda Ahmed
Modeling Of Ultrafine Particle Emissions And Ambient Levels For The Near Roadside Environment, Sauda Ahmed
Dissertations and Theses
Various epidemiological studies have linked exposure to Ultrafine Particles (UFP; diameter< 100 nm) to adverse health impacts. Roadway traffic is one of the major sources of UFPs and heavily influences UFP concentrations in the nearby vicinity of major roadways. Modeling efforts to predict UFPs have been limited due to the scarcity of reliable information on emissions, lack of monitoring data and limited understanding of complex processes affecting UFP concentrations near sources.
In this study continuous measurement of ultrafine particle number concentrations (PNC) and mass concentrations of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and PM2.5 was conducted near an arterial road and freeway at different seasons and meteorological conditions and integrated with traffic count data. PNC showed high correlation with NO (r=0.64 for arterial; 0.61 for freeway), NO2 (r=0.57 for arterial; 0.53 for freeway) and NOx (NOx=NO+NO2; r=0.63 for arterial; 0.59 for freeway) and moderate to low correlation with traffic volume (r=0.33 for arterial; 0.32 for freeway) and …

Microwave Instrumentation And Sensing Techniques For Quantum Efficiency And Minority-Carrier Lifetime Measurements, Kyle Benjamin Lu
Microwave Instrumentation And Sensing Techniques For Quantum Efficiency And Minority-Carrier Lifetime Measurements, Kyle Benjamin Lu
Dissertations and Theses
A non-contact method characterizing the quantum efficiency of a solar cell using the microwave reflectance signature is presented in this thesis. Traditional solar cell quantum efficiency (QE) measurements are only possible near the completion of the fabrication process using contacts in direct physical connection with the metalized surface tabs to probe and extract charge carriers from the device. However, pressure within the solar metrology industry to report the spectral performance of the device earlier in the manufacturing process as part of the process control loop requires that a new non-contact method be developed. This thesis work contributes the development of …
Building Energy Model Calibration For Retrofit Decision Making, Nicolas R. Johnson
Building Energy Model Calibration For Retrofit Decision Making, Nicolas R. Johnson
Dissertations and Theses
Accommodating the continued increase in energy demand in the face of global climate change has been a worldwide concern. With buildings in the US consuming nearly 40% of national energy, a concerted effort must be given to reduce building energy consumption. As new buildings continue to improve their efficiency through more restrictive energy codes, the other 76.9 billion square feet of current building stock falls further behind. The rate at which current buildings are being retrofit is not enough and better tools are needed to access the benefits of retrofits and the uncertainties associated with them. This study proposes a …
Quantifying The Impacts Of A Novel Predator: The Distinctive Case Of The Oregon Spotted Frog (Rana Pretiosa) And The Invasive American Bullfrog (Rana (Aquarana) Catesbeiana), Kyle Scott Tidwell
Quantifying The Impacts Of A Novel Predator: The Distinctive Case Of The Oregon Spotted Frog (Rana Pretiosa) And The Invasive American Bullfrog (Rana (Aquarana) Catesbeiana), Kyle Scott Tidwell
Dissertations and Theses
The decline of the Oregon Spotted Frog (Rana pretiosa), a Pacific Northwest endemic now federally listed as threatened, has been attributed to several aspects of ecosystem alteration, primarily habitat degradation and loss. The introduced American Bullfrog (Rana (Aquarana) catesbeiana) has been widely implicated in those declines, but the basis of that contention has been difficult to characterize. The bullfrog occurring at every site of recent Oregon Spotted Frog extirpation has focused concern about its impact.
Here, I present a suite of interconnected studies that examine the behavioral ecology of both species to better understand the potential …
Food Access Narratives In Southeast Portland, Oregon, Gwyneth Genevieve Mckee Manser
Food Access Narratives In Southeast Portland, Oregon, Gwyneth Genevieve Mckee Manser
Dissertations and Theses
Since the late 1990's, "food deserts" have dominated the academic and policy literature on food access and food security. Food deserts are defined as areas that lack easy access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food, and are typically measured using Geographic Information Systems and spatial data sets. However, while food deserts may provide a useful measure for identifying food insecurity at a broad scale, they fail to account for individual definitions and perceptions of food access (Barnes et al. 2015; McEntee 2009). Furthermore, the food desert model assumes a lack of agency on the part of low-income populations (Alkon et …
Certifying Loop Pipelining Transformations In Behavioral Synthesis, Disha Puri
Certifying Loop Pipelining Transformations In Behavioral Synthesis, Disha Puri
Dissertations and Theses
Due to the rapidly increasing complexity in hardware designs and competitive time to market trends in the industry, there is an inherent need to move designs to a higher level of abstraction. Behavioral Synthesis is the process of automatically compiling such Electronic System Level (ESL) designs written in high-level languages such as C, C++ or SystemC into Register-Transfer Level (RTL) implementation in hardware description languages such as Verilog or VHDL. However, the adoption of this flow is dependent on designers' faith in the correctness of behavioral synthesis tools.
Loop pipelining is a critical transformation employed in behavioral synthesis process, and …
Contextualization: An Experimental Model For Efl Writing Instruction In China, Guimin Tang

Dissertations and Theses
Chinese students learning English as a foreign language seem to get good marks in tests, but are poor or limited in their ability to write in English. This dilemma of China's EFL writing instruction seems to be related to the decontextualized EFL writing practices. This study aims to examine how Chinese EFL college students respond to changes in their writing instruction that pays attention to the context of EFL teaching and learning. In this study, context refers to three levels: linguistic context, situational context and cultural context.
Using the mixed methods approach, I conducted the study by engaging 60 second-year …
A Numerical Model Investigation Of The Role Of The Glacier Bed In Regulating Grounding Line Retreat Of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica, Michael Scott Waibel
A Numerical Model Investigation Of The Role Of The Glacier Bed In Regulating Grounding Line Retreat Of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica, Michael Scott Waibel
Dissertations and Theses
I examine how two different realizations of bed morphology affect Thwaites Glacier response to ocean warming through the initiation of marine ice sheet instability and associated grounding line retreat. A state of the art numerical ice sheet model is used for this purpose. The bed configurations used are the 1-km resolution interpolated BEDMAP2 bed and a higher-resolution conditional simulation produced by John Goff at the University of Texas using the same underlying data. The model is forced using a slow ramp approach, where melt of ice on the floating side of the grounding line is increased over time, which gently …
The Effects Of Scale Variation On Single-Family Residential Water Use In Portland, Or, Matthew Ryan Lee Bonnette
The Effects Of Scale Variation On Single-Family Residential Water Use In Portland, Or, Matthew Ryan Lee Bonnette
Dissertations and Theses
With growing urban populations and increasing concerns over the effects of climate change on water supplies, there has recently been a significant amount of interdisciplinary research focused on identifying the drivers of urban water use. Due to unavailability of individual or household level data, these studies are often limited to using spatially aggregated data. There is concern that this aggregation of data may be leading to misrepresentations of the drivers of urban water use, yet there have been few studies that have addressed this concern. As in all spatial quantitative analyses, studies in this area should consider how the spatial …
Regulating Pavement Dwellers: The Politics Of The Visibly Poor In Public Space, Lauren Marie Larin
Regulating Pavement Dwellers: The Politics Of The Visibly Poor In Public Space, Lauren Marie Larin
Dissertations and Theses
Many researchers argue the increasing reliance on sit/lie ordinances to regulate homeless people's use of public space is one in a suite of neoliberal policies that shape the geographies of public space in cities to serve the needs of global capital. However, these policies are developed at the local, not global, level as specific actors make claims in the public sphere that communicatively shape policy formation. Through comparative case study, this research asks, how do different actors, situated in specific local and global contexts, influence the adoption of sit/lie ordinances?
I examine two cases of policymaking in Portland and San …

The laboratory's in situ atomic force microscope (AFM) and secondary ion mass spectrometry systems (SIMS) are functional and integrated as one instrument. The SIMS utilizes a Ga focused ion beam (FIB) combined with a quadrupole mass analyzer. The AFM is comprised of a 6-axis stage, three coarse axes and three fine. The coarse stage is used for placing the AFM tip anywhere inside a (13x13x5 mm3) (xyz) volume. Thus the tip can be moved …
Explaining Unequal Transportation Outcomes In A Gentrifying City: The Example Of Portland, Oregon, Eugenio Arriaga Cordero
Explaining Unequal Transportation Outcomes In A Gentrifying City: The Example Of Portland, Oregon, Eugenio Arriaga Cordero
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines unequal outcomes of urban transportation policies in the neoliberal era. It focuses on inequalities in the Portland, Oregon metro area between 1994 and 2011 as measured in three key areas: 1) access to public transit; 2) the journey-to-work; and 3) "household-serving" trips. Growing concern over the harmful impacts from an increasing dependence on cars has led planners in the U.S. to encourage a modal shift from private car to public transit, bicycling, and walking. The required policies to make this modal shift possible, however, might inadvertently be benefiting "choice" riders at the cost of transport disadvantaged groups. …

An Analytical System For Determining Disciplinary Vocabulary For Data-Driven Learning: An Example From Civil Engineering, Philippa Jean Otto
An Analytical System For Determining Disciplinary Vocabulary For Data-Driven Learning: An Example From Civil Engineering, Philippa Jean Otto
Dissertations and Theses
Data-driven learning (DDL), an inductive teaching approach in which students learn through corpus interaction, has gained recent traction as way to teach specialized vocabulary in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes. There is little research, however, that addresses how to choose specialized vocabulary for teaching with DDL.
This study addressed this gap in research by exploring the potential of a three-part analytical, corpus-based system for determining vocabulary to teach with DDL for a specific context of language use. This system included (1) identifying words that were significantly more frequent in a specialized expert corpus than in a corpus of general …
