Use Of The Bioness L300® Functional Electrical Stimulator In Acute Stroke Rehabilitation, Christine Flanigan, Colleen M. Martinez, Beth N. Terranova, Nicholas Wildi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Purpose. Over 150,000 people in the U.S. every year experience foot drop following a stroke, slowing their ambulation and increasing their falls risk. We explore whether the use of functional electrical stimulation (FES) to the common fibular nerve during acute rehabilitation can maximize ambulation gains. Methods. Five in-patients admitted at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital experiencing foot drop participated. While receiving conventional physical therapy, four subjects wore the Bioness L300® device, and one subject used an elastic figure-8 wrapped elastic bandage. Gait parameters were evaluated at initial evaluation, an intermittent evaluation, and discharge. Results. During their stay, subjects significantly improved in gait …
An Electromyographic Comparison Of The Functional Performance Of The Gluteus Maximus Muscle In Prolonged Sitting Versus Standing Populations, Kerry Campagnola, Giusi Gerbino, Erica Johnson, Adrienne O’Keefe
An Electromyographic Comparison Of The Functional Performance Of The Gluteus Maximus Muscle In Prolonged Sitting Versus Standing Populations, Kerry Campagnola, Giusi Gerbino, Erica Johnson, Adrienne O’Keefe
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
PURPOSE: A common clinical concern of Physical Therapists is the inexplicably weak gluteus maximus (GM) muscle; we hypothesized that this may be linked to the popular habit of prolonged sitting. The purpose of this study was to determine if surface electromyography (sEMG) output and timing of the GM and hamstrings muscles differed between people who sit for prolonged periods of time and people who stand for prolonged periods of time. METHODS: The design of our study was a single session case-control study. Subjects were 22 healthy adults (23-36 years old) who either sat or stood for 8-10 hours a day …
Dancer Performance On The Lower Quarter Y Balance Test: A Longitudinal Study, Megan Dehey, Kelly Kaems, Molly Saunders, Gabrielle Schneider
Dancer Performance On The Lower Quarter Y Balance Test: A Longitudinal Study, Megan Dehey, Kelly Kaems, Molly Saunders, Gabrielle Schneider
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Purpose: There is a need in the current literature for further information regarding dancer performance on the Y Balance Test (YBT). This study tracked the test scores of a group of dancers to assess change over time and relationship of balance scores to injury risk. It is hoped that clinicians may be able to use the information found in this study to more accurately screen dancers for asymmetries, deficits, and changes over time using the YBT. Such screenings would allow for more effective care and better assessment of readiness to return to dance. Method: A group of 12 dancers between …
The Effects Of Cooling During Gait On Gait Endurance In Persons With Multiple Sclerosis Using The Six Minute Walk Test, Meghan Higgins, Esther Sosowsky, Elisheva Zinberg
The Effects Of Cooling During Gait On Gait Endurance In Persons With Multiple Sclerosis Using The Six Minute Walk Test, Meghan Higgins, Esther Sosowsky, Elisheva Zinberg
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Background: Persons with MS (pwMS) are limited in their mobility due to thermosensitivity. Exercising at a sufficient volume and intensity to increase mobility can result in increased core temperatures and resultant worsening of symptoms. The use of cooling garments to lower core temperature has been found to be a successful means of allowing pwMS to exercise for longer periods. Previous studies have relied on precooling for an extended period of time prior to activity, to achieve improved exercise performance. Cooling during the performance itself, or pericooling, may allow for similar performance gains to be realized without spending the time needed …

Interactions Between Descending And Somatosensory Inputs In Humans, Lisa Krivis, Ann Mackey, Maureen Mcdonough, Denise Uttaro
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this study, we assessed the corticospinal integration in healthy people while seated. Corticospinal integration was assessed by establishing the latency and amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) evoked following transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the primary motor cortex area representing the leg muscles, and the latency and amplitude of spinally-mediated reflex responses. Further, the modulation pattern of the spinally-mediated reflex responses were determined following subthreshold and suprathreshold TMS. All compound muscle action potentials, descending motor or spinally-mediated reflexes were recorded from the leg muscles through surface electromyography. Both subthreshold and suprathreshold TMS induced a similar modulation pattern on the …
A Static And Dynamic Investigation Of Quantum Nonlinear Transport In Highly Dense And Mobile 2d Electron Systems, Scott A. Dietrich
A Static And Dynamic Investigation Of Quantum Nonlinear Transport In Highly Dense And Mobile 2d Electron Systems, Scott A. Dietrich
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Heterostructures made of semiconductor materials may be one of most versatile environments for the study of the physics of electron transport in two dimensions. These systems are highly customizable and demonstrate a wide range of interesting physical phenomena. In response to both microwave radiation and DC excitations, strongly nonlinear transport that gives rise to non-equilibrium electron states has been reported and investigated. We have studied GaAs quantum wells with a high density of high mobility two-dimensional electrons placed in a quantizing magnetic field. This study presents the observation of several nonlinear transport mechanisms produced by the quantum nature of these …
Traumatic Familiarity: Fictions And Theories Of Community In The Eighteenth Century, Andrew Scott Dicus
Traumatic Familiarity: Fictions And Theories Of Community In The Eighteenth Century, Andrew Scott Dicus
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation addresses a crisis of modern collective identity by employing a dialectic of philosophical and literary "realisms." While both philosophical and novelistic discourses are premised on twin gestures (aspiration for correspondence between representation and reality), they arrive at radically different claims about how rational, self-governing individuals constitute - and are constituted by - "legitimate" social bodies. By foregrounding the internal complexity and empirical immersion of "real" individuals negotiating "realistic" social encounters, eighteenth-century novelists engage in a sustained critique of emerging concepts of "legitimate" community. Penetrating even the most basic foundations of social knowledge, such as the capacity to distinguish …
Archiving The City: A Guide To The Art Of Urban Interventions, Olatokunbo Adeola Enigbokan
Archiving The City: A Guide To The Art Of Urban Interventions, Olatokunbo Adeola Enigbokan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The topic of this dissertation is the development and exploration of alternative methodologies for understanding and relating to everyday urban experience. The project is a psychogeographical exploration of methodologies used in contemporary art and architectural practice to create street-level "urban interventions." For the purposes of this study, urban interventions are defined as actions, performances, installations and objects created by artists, and or activists and sometimes architects, and inserted into, or responsive to, everyday urban environments, usually taking place outside of official art spaces, such as museums and galleries. In most cases these interventions are unexpected, express a "do-it-yourself" aesthetic and …
Force To Change Large Cardinal Strength, Erin Kathryn Carmody
Force To Change Large Cardinal Strength, Erin Kathryn Carmody
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation includes many theorems which show how to change large cardinal properties with forcing. I consider in detail the degrees of inaccessible cardinals (an analogue of the classical degrees of Mahlo cardinals) and provide new large cardinal definitions for degrees of inaccessible cardinals extending the hyper-inaccessible hierarchy. I showed that for every cardinal $\kappa$, and ordinal $\alpha$, there is a notion of forcing $\mathbb{P}$ such that $\kappa$ is still $\beta$-inaccessible in the extension, for every $\beta < \alpha$, but not $\alpha$-inaccessible. I also consider Mahlo cardinals and degrees of Mahlo cardinals. I showed that for every cardinal $\kappa$, and ordinal $\alpha$, there is a notion of forcing $\mathbb{P}$ such that for every $\beta < \alpha$, the cardinal $\kappa$ is still $\beta$-Mahlo in the extension, but not $\alpha$-Mahlo. I also show that a cardinal $\kappa$ which is Mahlo in the ground model can have every possible inaccessible degree in the forcing extension, but no longer be Mahlo there. The thesis includes a collection of results which give forcing notions which change large cardinal strength from weakly compact to weakly measurable, including some earlier work by others that fit this theme. I consider in detail measurable cardinals and Mitchell rank. I show how to change a class of measurable cardinals by forcing to an extension where all measurable cardinals above some fixed ordinal $\alpha$ have Mitchell rank below $\alpha.$ Finally, I consider supercompact cardinals, and strongly compact cardinals. I show how to change the Mitchell rank for supercompactness for a class of cardinals.
Memory And Moderation: The Imperial Image Of Augustus And Its Perception Among Later Authors, Frank Joseph Cretella
Memory And Moderation: The Imperial Image Of Augustus And Its Perception Among Later Authors, Frank Joseph Cretella
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Aware of the Roman people's weariness following decades of civil war, Augustus founded the Principate on the notion that the traditions of the Republic had been restored and that Augustus was not a monarch but an ordinary citizen serving his nation. This modest image of the emperor was characterized by his ceremonial refusal of honors and offices and his preservation of the Senate's dignity. However, the purpose of this thesis is not simply to examine the modest image of the emperor but rather to provide a detailed study of the memory of Augustus' moderation in the works of later authors. …
Effects Of Native Language On Perception And Neurophysiologic Processing Of English /R/ And /L/ By Native American, Korean, And Japanese Listeners, Lee Jung An
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The perception of English liquids /r/ and /l/ is challenging for native Korean and Japanese adult speakers because these sounds are not phonemic in these languages. The Korean language has a partial phonetic model (intervocalic [ɾ]-[11]) that could potentially facilitate processing of English /r/ and /l/ but the Japanese language does not. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of native language on the neurophysiologic processing of English intervocalic /r/ and /l/ by native American, Korean and Japanese listeners using several event-related evoked potentials (ACC, MMN, & P3a) along with behavioral identification and discrimination. Three specific aims …
Cochlear Implantation As A Treatment Option For Adults With Post-Lingual Single Sided Deafness: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Elvera Bader
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Adults with post lingual single sided deafness experience a myriad of issues as a result of their condition. Speech perception in noise and localization are well documented as being compromised in this population due to the loss of binaural auditory input. Cochlear implantation was introduced in the 2000s as an experimental treatment option for suppression/abatement of tinnitus in individuals with SSD, with consistent demonstration in reduction of tinnitus severity. Most recently, the focus has shifted to the potential reintroduction of binaural effects, and subsequently, improvements in speech in noise and localization performance through this treatment modality. The present systematic review …
Blessed Disruption: Culture And Urban Space In A European Church Planting Network, John D. Boy
Blessed Disruption: Culture And Urban Space In A European Church Planting Network, John D. Boy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
New Protestant churches are being founded in cities around the world. They are the product of a conscious effort on the part of evangelicals to found, or ``plant,'' new churches in urban areas. Behind this effort are a whole host of actors, including denominations, churches, seminaries, and parachurch organizations, who come together in church planting networks to establish theologically conservative churches that will speak to young urban professional audiences. The hope is that these efforts will scale up and turn into a movement bringing about religious revival among culturally influential groups. Among the focal areas for these efforts are European …
Some Applications Of Noncommutative Groups And Semigroups To Information Security, Lisa Bromberg
Some Applications Of Noncommutative Groups And Semigroups To Information Security, Lisa Bromberg
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We present evidence why the Burnside groups of exponent 3 could be a good candidate for a platform group for the HKKS semidirect product key exchange protocol. We also explore hashing with matrices over SL2(Fp), and compute bounds on the girth of the Cayley graph of the subgroup of SL2(Fp) for specific generators A, B. We demonstrate that even without optimization, these hashes have comparable performance to hashes in the SHA family.
Factors That Affect Treatment Compliance Among Individuals With Mental Illness, Marsha Brown
Factors That Affect Treatment Compliance Among Individuals With Mental Illness, Marsha Brown
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Approximately 6% of the American population suffers from a severe mental illness such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Treatment compliance in individuals with severe mental illness is imperative as without treatment these individuals may experience homelessness, unemployment, and a decreased life expectancy of up to 34 years. Consequently, researchers have increasingly examined factors that may affect overall compliance among these individuals, such as insight, social support, symptom severity, and substance abuse. However, many of these studies focus on compliance with prescribed medications and few examine compliance with recommended psychological treatment. The current …
The World Bank, Amartya Sen And Cultural Heritage As Development In Jordan, Mark Guarnaccia
The World Bank, Amartya Sen And Cultural Heritage As Development In Jordan, Mark Guarnaccia
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Beginning in the mid 1990's, the World Bank, in small but nonetheless meaningful amounts, fund projects in the Middle East and North Africa with the express purpose of promoting tourism and urban redevelopment through cultural heritage preservation. To date, the World Bank has sponsored projects in Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, Tunisia, Morocco and Jordan. Focusing on the three projects in Jordan, this paper attempts to problematize the World Bank's heritage preservation activities in the Middle East and North Africa. In order to do this, it examines the thought and work of Nobel Prize winning economist Amartya Sen. It proposes that cultural capabilities …
Assessment Of Physical Performance In Adolescents Of Varying Body Weight, Nicholas Dalonzo, Nicole Liquori, Nicole Savarese
Assessment Of Physical Performance In Adolescents Of Varying Body Weight, Nicholas Dalonzo, Nicole Liquori, Nicole Savarese
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Fifty-one healthy adolescents of both gender without any neuromuscular, musculoskeletal or cardiopulmonary disorders and between the ages of 12 and 17 with a mean age of 14.09 years (SD: 1.45 years) were recruited to participate in the 6-minute walk test. Several measurements such as height, weight and leg length were taken before testing, along with heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation (SPO2) before, after and 10 minutes post 6-minute walk test. Walk distance was also quantified and used as an outcome measure. The adolescents were divided into two groups prior to statistical testing. The first group was classified as …
Errant Memory In African American Literature Of The Long Nineteenth Century, Tristan Alexander Striker
Errant Memory In African American Literature Of The Long Nineteenth Century, Tristan Alexander Striker
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, I trace the complex black literary trope of errant memory through American and African American literature. Authors of African descent are constantly subjected to what I call Africanity, or the paratextual historicizing elements provided by white interlocutors that seek to impose specific caricatures and stereotypes on them and their works to force them into the American historical narrative that depends on their dehumanized and commodified status. These caricatures and stereotypes are rooted in an Africa imagined by these white interlocutors, one that does not match any reality. Authors of African descent transcend this paratextual Africanity through what …
Rebellion Under The Palm Trees: Memory, Agrarian Reform And Labor In The Aguán, Honduras, Andres Leon
Rebellion Under The Palm Trees: Memory, Agrarian Reform And Labor In The Aguán, Honduras, Andres Leon
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
On December 9, 2009, the Unified Peasant Movement of the Aguán (Movimiento Unificado Campesino del Aguán; MUCA) occupied over 20,000 hectares of oil palm covered lands in the Aguán region in the Honduran northern coast. This was the latest, and probably most dramatic, chapter in the region's tumultuous recent history. This dissertation explores this history and the process of creation of the Aguán region from the perspective of a set of impoverished peasant families that migrated from different parts of Honduras towards the Aguán from the 1970s onwards, in search of a better present and future.
It asks about the …
The Impact Of Bank Relationships On Corporate And Investment Decisions, Chih-Huei (Debby) Su
The Impact Of Bank Relationships On Corporate And Investment Decisions, Chih-Huei (Debby) Su
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation consists of three chapters addressing the impact of bank lending relationships on three borrowing firms' corporate and investment decisions: mergers and acquisition, board structure, and the timing of earnings announcements.
In the first chapter, I investigate the impact of prior bank lending relationships on borrowing firms' acquisition decision. Information is particularly hard to obtain, but extremely valuable in the course of major corporate events such as acquisitions. As informed lenders, relationship banks are found to play a certification role in acquisitions. The greater the intensity of a prior bank lending relationship, the greater the probability that a firm …
Triple Stigma In Forensic Psychiatric Patients: Mental Illness, Race, And Criminality, Michelle Leigh West
Triple Stigma In Forensic Psychiatric Patients: Mental Illness, Race, And Criminality, Michelle Leigh West
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Stigma involves negative beliefs and devaluations of people in socially identified groups (e.g. race, mental illness). Although people have many reactions to social stigma, some labeled people internalize these attitudes. Research has increasingly explored mental illness self-stigma, when people with mental illness begin to believe that society's negative beliefs are true of them (e.g., that they are hopeless due to mental illness). Self-stigma predicts poorer functional and treatment outcomes. Stigma research has typically investigated stigmatized labels individually. Forensic psychiatric patients, people with mental illness with history of criminal conviction, by definition experience multiple stigmas, yet no research has explored how …
The Incidence And Evolution Of Palatalized Consonants In Latvian, Linda Zalite
The Incidence And Evolution Of Palatalized Consonants In Latvian, Linda Zalite
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis traces the evolution of the palatalized rhotic /rj/ in Baltic languages with focus on the continuation of this segment in Latvian and its recent neutralization with /r/. Historical, phonological, phonetic, and synchronic data is gathered as evidence to further our understanding of the Latvian palatalized rhotic and its near-disappearance in the 20th century. Previous typological works of Endzelīns (1922, 1951), Dini (1997), Rūķe-Dravņia (1994) and Ābele (1929) were considered intending to answer three central questions. Was the Latvian palatal rhotic a palatalized segment or a true palatal? What factors played a role in the depalatalization …
Diagnostic Procedures Using Radiation And Risk Of Thyroid Cancer: Causal Association Or Detection Bias? An Examination Of Population Cancer Trends And Data From The Nyc Fire Department, Rachel Zeig-Owens
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Background: Thyroid cancer (TC) is a common cancer diagnosis in the United States, whose incidence is increasing. Disaster and radiation treatment studies show high doses of radiation can cause TC. Some diagnostic procedures, whose use is increasing, expose individuals to low-dose radiation but can also incidentally detect subclinical TC. Evidence regarding low-dose radiation risk is limited.
Objectives: To investigate the possible association of greater use of diagnostic procedures with TC, either causally through radiation exposure or via incidental detection.
Methods: Two data sources were used: National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) data and Fire Department of the …
Generalized Event Representation In Pre-School Children With Mild- To High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) And Children With Cognitive And Linguistic Delays (Cld), Tashana S. Samuel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently establish rigid routines and have difficulties flexibly applying what they have learned. Three experiments were conducted to examine generalized event representation in 34 pre-school children. In Experiment 1, children diagnosed with varying kinds of cognitive and language delays (CLD: n = 14) were tested with the generalized imitation paradigm, a reliable measure of representational capacity. Two sets of perceptually dissimilar objects with similar functions were used to perform the same task: one set consisted of modeling props and the other set was the generalization props. At the generalization assessment, children observed actions modeled …

The Archdiocese Of New York: Transition From Urban Powerhouse To Suburban Institution, 1950-2000 A Case Study, Henry A. Sheinkopf
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
From 1850-1950, the New York Archdiocese welcomed newly arriving Irish and Italian Catholics and forged a political block that influenced local, state and national politics with political leverage sufficient to influence the city's commercial sectors. This mobilization transformed the once penniless and discriminated-against Irish, and later Italians, by enabling the Archdiocese of New York, through the power of the vote, to promote its religious interests as its adherents rose to positions of political and economic power. The Archdiocese of New York became the owner of vast real estate, a provider of social and educational services, and an arbiter of morality …
Content Analysis Of Applied Learning From High Fidelity Patient Simulation Orientation To Critical Care, Patricia M. Span
Content Analysis Of Applied Learning From High Fidelity Patient Simulation Orientation To Critical Care, Patricia M. Span
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported that over 98,000 deaths occur in hospitals from medical errors in the United States. In a follow-up IOM report, it was noted that nurses have a direct impact on patient morbidity and mortality and are often the last line of defense for patient safety. The challenge for nurse educators in hospitals is to ensure that as newly licensed nurses enter the workforce, orientation outcomes reflect acquisition of knowledge and skills, which are applied in practice. When newly licensed registered nurses are hired into critical care units, this puts them in a position where they …
Nuclear Pore Protein Nup211 Is Essential For Cell Cycle Progression And Cell Shape Maintenance In Fission Yeast, Ayisha R. Sookdeo
Nuclear Pore Protein Nup211 Is Essential For Cell Cycle Progression And Cell Shape Maintenance In Fission Yeast, Ayisha R. Sookdeo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) are large multi-protein channels that traverse the nuclear envelope and mediate nucleo-cytoplasmic transport. Proteomic studies have revealed that NPCs are composed of about thirty different proteins called nucleoporins. I explored a particular nucleoporin, Nup211, in fission yeast. nup211 is an essential gene; its deletion is lethal and causes morphological defects. In this study, I characterized the cell morphological defects caused by the down-regulation of Nup211 and found that restoring the N-terminal domain of Nup211 was sufficient to rescue the lethal phenotype and partially suppress the morphological defects. Additionally, I investigated the role Nup211 plays in …
Phylogeography Of Southeast Asian Flying Foxes (Chiroptera: Pteropodidae: Pteropus), Susan Man Shu Tsang
Phylogeography Of Southeast Asian Flying Foxes (Chiroptera: Pteropodidae: Pteropus), Susan Man Shu Tsang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Flying foxes (Pteropus) are a genus of Old World fruit bats that are important seed dispersers and pollinators for plants native to the 200,000+ islands in Southeast Asia, yet they are some of the most poorly known bats in the world. They comprise some of the largest known bat species, and are morphologically relatively conserved on the genus level. Pteropus is the most species-rich genus within Pteropodidae, though the origin for this diversity remains incompletely understood. In Chapter 1, I discuss the importance of Pteropus to the ecosystem and as reservoir hosts. In Chapter 2, a molecular phylogeny is presented …
Touching Time: Forms Of Romantic Temporality, Leila Walker
Touching Time: Forms Of Romantic Temporality, Leila Walker
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The sense of touch has largely been neglected in the study of Romantic literature. While recent histories of the senses hold that sight and touch became disarticulated toward the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth, these studies tend to emphasize the elevation of sight as a more advanced mode of perception, suitable for observing experiments or appreciating art, over the more base sense of touch. Questions of tactility tend to be absorbed into histories of materiality or the body, and this terminological slippage becomes particularly apparent as these histories enter the Romantic period. However, when …
Leveraging Capacity: Technical Solutions To Hunger In The Era Of Neoliberalism, Elizabeth Perry Bullock
Leveraging Capacity: Technical Solutions To Hunger In The Era Of Neoliberalism, Elizabeth Perry Bullock
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Leveraging Capacity: Technical Solutions to Hunger in the Era of Neoliberalism takes the Global Seed Vault and the value of "global crop diversity" as a point of departure for raising questions about the influence of digital technology on the seed and about the solution to hunger known as "global food security." Discussions about food security among food studies scholars highlight either the failures of global public health advocates to regulate the food and beverage industry or they view food security, like earlier campaigns against global hunger, as an instrument for U.S. foreign policy. On either side of this debate, the …
