Key bond forming strategies are sought to provide new ways to address carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom bonds. The advancement of new asymmetric reactions to generate enantiopure products from achiral starting materials is a vital area of research. The objectives addressed in this dissertation include: 1) the development of a general reductive conversion of esters to ethers with a broad substrate scope accessing …
Screening The Managerial Applicant: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study Of Résumé Review And Evaluation, Gregory E. Higgins
Screening The Managerial Applicant: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study Of Résumé Review And Evaluation, Gregory E. Higgins
Dissertations
Resume screening is among the most frequently used hiring methods in U.S.-based organizations (Behrenz, 2001; Wilk & Cappelli, 2003). While little research has been conducted to establish its validity (Russell, 2007), 90% of hiring personnel in the United States use some form of resume screening to eliminate job applicants during the hiring process (Boatman & Erker, 2012). Researchers have noted that the use of resume screening is a likely source of hiring errors (Robertson & Smith, 2001) that have a range of negative impacts on organizations including loss of revenue, damage to the organizational image, lowered employee morale, customer dissatisfaction, …

Cohort default rates can impact an institution’s ability to participate in the Title IV aid programs. Title IV aid programs such as the federal Pell grant, federal work-study program, and the federal loan program is critical to student enrollment. If an institution loses its participation in the Title IV aid programs, this would be detrimental to both students and the institution. Cohort default rates at Mississippi community and junior colleges are currently above the national average. This qualitative study examines the default prevention and management practices at Mississippi community and junior colleges. Using an interview protocol, the researcher interviewed financial …
Factors Influencing Career And Technical Professionals’ Career Advancement, Deidra Minor
Factors Influencing Career And Technical Professionals’ Career Advancement, Deidra Minor
Dissertations
To remain globally competitive, the U.S. must address the need for a more technical- skilled workforce (United States Department of Labor, 2013). A technical-skilled has workforce occupations that require vocational associate’s degrees (Lewis, 2004). It is evident that the initiative to meet the demand for a highly competitive workforce for the 21st century requires a combination of progressive education, advanced skills and professional experience (Threeton, 2006). Historically, the technical worker gained skills without definite planned opportunities for higher education and career upward mobility (Skolnik, 2010). Further, some post-secondary institutions tend to dismiss the importance of recruiting the technical community college …

Scalable Time-Stepping For Navier-Stokes Through High-Frequency Analysis Of Block Arnoldi Iteration, Brianna Bingham
Scalable Time-Stepping For Navier-Stokes Through High-Frequency Analysis Of Block Arnoldi Iteration, Brianna Bingham
Dissertations
Existing time-stepping methods for PDEs such as Navier-Stokes equations are not as efficient or scalable as they need to be for high-resolution simulation due to stiffness. The failure of existing time-stepping methods to adapt to changes in technology presents a dilemma that is becoming even more problematic over time. By rethinking approaches to time-stepping, dramatic gains in efficiency of simulation methods can be achieved. Krylov subspace spectral (KSS) methods have proven to be effective for solving time-dependent, variable-coefficient PDEs. The objective of this research is to continue the development of KSS methods to provide numerical solution methods that are far …

John Cage’S ‘Rock’ Music: Ecocritical And Performance Considerations In Ryoanji For Solo Oboe And Percussion Obbligato (1983), Everette Smith
Dissertations
In the years following World War II, several American composers began breaking from the confines of music notation relegated to five lines and four spaces. Of particular interest to this study, John Cage (1912–1992) began liberating his compositions from the restraint posed by traditional notation in 1951 with his work Imaginary Landscape No. 4. He continued to create and develop varying systems of graphic notation with his indeterminate works, which became increasingly influenced by his interest in the environment and in South and East Asian aesthetic and philosophical considerations, themselves environmentally influenced. One of the latest products of Cage’s coalescence …
Essential Leadership Competencies For College Presidents In A Metrics-Driven Community College System, Mark Mclean
Essential Leadership Competencies For College Presidents In A Metrics-Driven Community College System, Mark Mclean
Dissertations
Leaders in higher education face more change than ever before in a complex, challenging, and continually shifting social, political, and economic environment (Kezar & Holcombe, 2017). As a result, presidents are increasingly accountable for performance and metrics serve as an important component of accountability (PricewaterhouseCoopers, 2017). However, presidents may not possess the “rare combination of skills that enables them to be both strong transactional and operational leaders as well as more visionary and transformational ones” (Pelletier, 2016, p. 31). As a consequence, leadership failure produces significant adverse results for presidents and institutions including the loss of positions and the threat …

Membrane based gas separation technique has attracted interest of selective removal of carbon dioxide gas from …
Effect Of Cure Protocol On Network Formation And Properties Of Epoxy-Diamine Thermosets, Andrew Janisse
Effect Of Cure Protocol On Network Formation And Properties Of Epoxy-Diamine Thermosets, Andrew Janisse
Dissertations
The understanding of thermoset cure has, traditionally, been limited to the analysis of a single degree of cure value obtained via techniques such as dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC). These analyses limit the scope of understanding of network development during cure. The continued development of rapid cure matrix chemistries necessitates the advancement of analytical techniques capable of quantifying how thermal cure profiles influence crosslinked network architectures throughout cure. This dissertation investigates and elucidates the mechanisms of polymer network growth through glassy epoxy/diamine thermoset to improve the way network growth is tracked and inform the role of cure protocol on network formation. …
Enhancement Of Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods Through The Use Of The Residual, Haley Dozier
Enhancement Of Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods Through The Use Of The Residual, Haley Dozier
Dissertations
Depending on the type of equation, finding the solution of a time-dependent partial differential equation can be quite challenging. Although modern time-stepping methods for solving these equations have become more accurate for a small number of grid points, in a lot of cases the scalability of those methods leaves much to be desired. That is, unless the timestep is chosen to be sufficiently small, the computed solutions might exhibit unreasonable behavior with large input sizes. Therefore, to improve accuracy as the number of grid points increases, the time-steps must be chosen to be even smaller to reach a reasonable solution. …

Dissertations
Aggregation and subsequent deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide on neuronal cell membranes have been implicated as a cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Gangliosides in their clustered form seed and promote the Aβ aggregation process. However, the effects of the structure and the concentration of ganglioside saccharides on Aβ aggregation are not well understood. We investigated how the specific structure of saccharides (β-D-galactose and β-D-glucose) affect the aggregation pathways, kinetics, and the aggregated structures of Aβ via in vitro experiments. The effects of the local concentration of saccharides on the Aβ aggregation were also investigated.
To mimic the multivalent effect of the …
Simulation As Replacement For Traditional Clinical In Pre-Licensure Nursing Education: Outcomes Of Different Ratios Of Replacement Time For Traditional Clinical With Simulation, Tiffany Zyniewicz
Dissertations
The use of simulation in nursing education has grown over the last 30 years. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing National Simulation Study indicated that up to 50% of traditional clinical hours can be replaced with simulation at a 1:1 replacement ratio and produce the same outcomes. A review of the literature indicated that there is no standard replacement ratio for simulation time to traditional clinical time being used in pre-licensure nursing education in the United States. The purpose of this study was to explore the outcomes of utilizing a 1:1 simulation-to-traditional clinical time replacement ratio and a …
Evaluating Corrosion Altering Properties Of Thiophene Based Copolymers, Robert Peterson
Evaluating Corrosion Altering Properties Of Thiophene Based Copolymers, Robert Peterson
Dissertations
There is an important and ongoing debate on how or whether conductive polymers (CP) alter corrosion performance with some researchers reporting that CPs ultimately accelerate corrosion and others saying CPs, if understood could possibly replace the world’s best standard for corrosion prevention, i.e., chromium based inhibitors. The primary project goal was to improve our understanding of how CPs alter corrosion chemistry by 1) controlling the polymer structure and 2) in-turn the properties and then 3) targeting the best protocol for fast corrosion kinetic evaluation.
We detail the copolymer synthesis results and shift in corrosion protection properties for …

The Importance Of Responsiveness: Improving Health-Related Outcomes Among Ostomates, Carrie Reif
The Importance Of Responsiveness: Improving Health-Related Outcomes Among Ostomates, Carrie Reif
Dissertations
More than 750,000 individuals in the United States live with an ostomy appliance, and additional 130,000 patients undergo ostomy surgery each year (United Ostomy Association of America, 2018). Although a life-saving procedure, patients confront significant physical (e.g., bowel routine and activity levels) and emotional (e.g., poor body image and depression) challenges that impede the adjustment process. When faced with health-related threats, the transactional action model of stress and coping argues that patients use strategies, such as seeking support, to effectively cope. However, because of perceptions of felt and enacted stigma and health-related uncertainty, some patients conceal ostomy-related issues and limit …
Differences In Treatment Utilization Between Fee Paying And Non-Fee Paying Clients In A Counseling Training Clinic, Katherine E. Sammons
Differences In Treatment Utilization Between Fee Paying And Non-Fee Paying Clients In A Counseling Training Clinic, Katherine E. Sammons
Dissertations
Freud’s writings and cognitive dissonance theories assume that paying a fee for mental health services is necessary for client motivation to progress through treatment; however, empirical study has failed to support this assertion. Regular client utilization (as measured by total number of sessions, number of cancellations, and persistence through a planned termination session) is correlated with improved client treatment outcome and is essential for providing counselors-in-training with the opportunity to practice and demonstrate counseling skills. Prior literature illustrates that counseling training clinics may experience premature termination at a greater rate than other outpatient settings due to two primary issues: (a) …
Nevertheless They Persisted: Youth Formerly In Foster Care Who Have Experienced Trauma And Their Journey To Postsecondary Education, Kristin Janine Myers
Nevertheless They Persisted: Youth Formerly In Foster Care Who Have Experienced Trauma And Their Journey To Postsecondary Education, Kristin Janine Myers
Dissertations
It is estimated that approximately 60% of children have experienced some form of trauma in their lifetime (Wiest-Stevenson & Lee, 2016). Research in the last 20 years has shown the impact of childhood trauma on human development, social development, and learning, and yet, there is very little literature in school counseling about this topic (Perry, 2001, 2006). School counselors play in essential role in identifying barriers that impede students from receiving a high-quality education (American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2012), and are charged with reducing the educational attainment gap for the students they serve (Milsom & McCormick, 2015). There are …

First-Generation Community College Transfer Students’ Perceptions Of Building A Sense Of Belonging And Its Subsequent Impact On University Retention, Tara E. Benson
Dissertations
Although attendance numbers are rising in both populations, transfer students and firstgeneration students have lower retention and completion rates (Bonet & Walters, 2016; Seider, Clark, & Soutter, 2015). All students, specifically first-generation and transfer students, have a better chance of succeeding if they feel they are academically and socially integrated into the university setting (Seider et al., 2015; Williams & Ferrari, 2015). The purpose of this study was to examine the success gap between firstgeneration transfer students and continuing generation community college transfer students who attend one Midwest university. The mixed methods study included an analysis of quantitative data of …
