Playing Merlin: Authorship From Geoffrey Of Monmouth To Neomedievalisms, Keith Russo Jun 2019

Playing Merlin: Authorship From Geoffrey Of Monmouth To Neomedievalisms, Keith Russo

Dissertations

The twenty-first century is the age of new media for old stories. Just as film, television, and print have adapted medieval literature into movies like Excalibur and Monty Python and the Holy Grail, video games have produced new versions of Arthurian tales whose mysterious origins blur the distinction between history and myth. Many academics are concerned with the authenticity of the various representations of the Middle Ages and the “historical” Arthur and Merlin and label any postmedieval adaptation as an “anachronistic” medievalism. However, electronic texts have provided a different focus: studying the multiplicity of rewritings of those names through …

Sensitivity Of The Theoretical Electron Capture Shape And Comparisons To Experiment, Katrina E. Koehler Jun 2019

Sensitivity Of The Theoretical Electron Capture Shape And Comparisons To Experiment, Katrina E. Koehler

Dissertations

The direct neutrino mass is a fundamental physics quantity with far-reaching implications for the physics community. Current experimental limits put the direct neutrino mass at less than 2 eV. The neutrino mass can be explored through an end-point measurement of tritium beta decay, which is currently underway in the KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN). KATRIN has a lower limit of 0.2 eV, at which point there will be either a mass measurement or another upper bound. In either case, an alternative experiment with different systematics is needed to verify the results and/or push the upper bound lower. The end point …

Fatigue Performance Of Rc Beams Strengthened With Near Surface Mounted Cfrp Composites, Tamer Ghaith Mousa Eljufout

Dissertations

Bridges have a fundamental role in improving the effectiveness of highways and providing an expedient and express traffic system. Over time, Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridges degrade due to gradually increased traffic loads and environmental deteriorations. Subsequently, service loads might cause higher stresses in concrete and steel reinforcement than stresses considered in the design stage. This affects the structural performance of RC beams and leads to sudden fatigue failure. As such, there is an essential need for rehabilitation to avoid hazards and tragedies.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites are becoming widely used to strengthen RC bridges. Near Surface Mounted (NSM) …

Three Essays On Food Insecurity In Nigeria, Pimam Manzi Pidalatan Jun 2019

Three Essays On Food Insecurity In Nigeria, Pimam Manzi Pidalatan

Dissertations

Households experience multiple shocks, among which health-related and agricultural-related shocks are the most frequent shocks in developing economies. Households’ exposure to shocks contributes more to the risk of being food insecure than a poor resource endowment (Azeem et al., 2016). Moreover, in low-income countries about 3.5 million mothers and children under the age of five die every year because they are undernourished FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP AND WHO 2017). Sub-Sahara Africa is the region with the highest prevalence of undernourished people (22 percent) and stunted children (30 percent) (FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP AND WHO 2017). Three of the seventeen Sustainable …

Functional Assessment And Treatment Of Elopement Occasioned By Transitions, Denice Rios Mojica Jun 2019

Functional Assessment And Treatment Of Elopement Occasioned By Transitions, Denice Rios Mojica

Dissertations

Elopement is a dangerous behavior in children with developmental disabilities because it greatly increases the risk of accidents that lead to serious injury or death. The dangers of elopement are especially high during transitions because these situations increase the chance that a child will gain unsupervised access outside, where the most serious accidents typically occur. Despite its severity, assessment methodologies that specifically evaluate the contextual variables found during transitions are not available. Additionally, treatment for elopement during transitions typically involves antecedent interventions which do not address function. Continued research on effective and efficient means for the assessment and treatment of …

Ngos Embodying Decoloniality: Towards Emanticipatory Psychological Practice And Pedagogy In Palestine, Hana Masud Jun 2019

Ngos Embodying Decoloniality: Towards Emanticipatory Psychological Practice And Pedagogy In Palestine, Hana Masud

Dissertations

Abstract

The Palestinian need for aid is entirely a result of a decades long conflict with Israel. Western funders to Palestinian NGOs working in psychological services may have good intentions, but their traditional approaches to therapy and well-being may be inconsistent with a collective Palestinian identity of liberation. These colonizing therapies may stigmatize Palestinians as "traumatized", encouraging a defeated or passive mentality, undermining values of resistance, while ongoing Israeli oppression continues. The NGO policies and modes of work can also influence the worldview, practices, and motivations of Palestinian Mental health workers who are serving populations with much experience of violence …

Examining Protective Factors That Promote Resilience Among Children With An Incarcerated Parent, Celeste A. Jackson Jun 2019

Examining Protective Factors That Promote Resilience Among Children With An Incarcerated Parent, Celeste A. Jackson

Dissertations

Children of incarcerated parents (CIP) represent one of the most vulnerable, at-risk populations in the United States (Johnston, 1995). Best estimates suggests there are 2.7 million children with an incarcerated parents and African-American children are disproportionately represented at a figure of 1 in 9 children (Glaze & Maruschak, 2008). Much of the research attempting to understand this population and guide intervention efforts has employed a deficit-based approach, highlighting the plethora of adverse risk factors and negative outcomes associated with being the child of an incarcerated parent. This approach fails to acknowledge the presence of resilience inherent in these youth. The …

An Evaluation Of The New Teacher Mentoring And Induction Program At A Title One Elementary School, Tamara Baker-Drayton

Dissertations

Low performing Title I schools often experience a lower teacher retention rate when compared to schools with higher academic achievement. Vacancies are typically filled with new or inexperienced teachers who leave the school within a few years. To counter this problem, West Creek Elementary (pseudonym) introduced a comprehensive New Teacher Mentoring and Induction initiative. The program evaluation was a voluntary anonymous written survey with an optional in person interview conducted with the participants and administrators. Results indicated that the New Teacher Mentoring and Induction program was effective in enhancing teacher pedagogy, not effective in enhancing teacher retention, and that greater …

This study investigates the effectiveness of educational supervision in improving the performance of Saudi female English language teachers from the teachers’ perspectives. Finding and supporting professional English language teachers and supervisors is one of the greatest obstacles facing Saudi Arabia (Alrabai, 2016; Sywelem & Witte, 2013). In Saudi Arabia and other countries, a lack of skills, training, and resources, such as time, money, and meeting spaces, seems to be a common problem for many supervisors and schools (Badah et al., 2013; Tawfiq & Almajali, 2012). Examining the perceptions of English teachers in Saudi Arabia contributes to a deeper understanding that …

Artist As Academic Leader, George H. Brown Jun 2019

Artist As Academic Leader, George H. Brown

Dissertations

The American College President Study (ACE, 2017) revealed that 78% of university presidents are planning to retire within the next nine years. With the increasing complexity of higher education, the demand for innovative leadership will grow as a result of the departure of these leaders. This demand will create opportunities for artist practitioners interested in higher education leadership. However, if artist practitioners doubt an administrative role will give voice to their imagination, will they accept the challenge and opportunity of leadership?

Currently, only 0.33% of university presidents serving four-year degree-granting institutions of higher education in the U.S. come from the …

High-Performance Quasi-Monte Carlo Integration And Applications, Ahmed Hassan H. Almulihi Jun 2019

High-Performance Quasi-Monte Carlo Integration And Applications, Ahmed Hassan H. Almulihi

Dissertations

While adaptive integration by region partitioning is generally effective in low dimensions, quasi-Monte Carlo methods can be used for integral approximations in moderate to high dimensions. Important application areas include high-energy physics, statistics, computational finance and stochastic geometry with applications in robotics, tessellations and imaging from medical data using tetrahedral meshes.

Lattice rule integration is a class of quasi-Monte Carlo methods, implemented by an equal-weight cubature formula and suited for fairly smooth functions. Successful methods to construct these rules are the component-by-component (CBC) algorithm by Sloan and Restsov (2001) and the fast algorithm for CBC by Nuyens and Cools (2006). …

Approximate Algorithms For Regulatory Motif Discovery In Dna, Hasnaa Imad Al-Shaikhli Jun 2019

Approximate Algorithms For Regulatory Motif Discovery In Dna, Hasnaa Imad Al-Shaikhli

Dissertations

Motif discovery is the problem of finding common substrings within a set of biological strings. Therefore it can be applied to finding Transcription Factor Binding Sites (TFBS) that have common patterns (motifs). A transcription factor molecule can bind to multiple binding sites in the promoter region of different genes to make these genes co-regulating. The Planted (l, d) Motif Problem (PMP) is a classic version of motif discovery where l is the motif length and d represents the maximum allowed mutation distance. The quorum Planted (l, d, q) Motif Problem (qPMP) is a version of PMP …

Outside Looking In: Non-Standard Work And The Politics Of Labor Market Segmentation, Kathleen Bolter Jun 2019

Outside Looking In: Non-Standard Work And The Politics Of Labor Market Segmentation, Kathleen Bolter

Dissertations

Since the 1980s, major structural and demographic changes in the OECD have encouraged the proliferation of nonstandard work (part-time and temporary jobs). The increase in nonstandard work is viewed as a key cause for income and social inequality. Inequality creates many issues for states including the erosion of trust in institutions and a weakening of civic society as economic growth fails to benefit all of those involved in its production. Up to this point, there have been few studies examining why states vary in employment protection and regulation for nonstandard work. This study seeks to answer how the insider/outsider divide, …

Improving Protein Analysis By Desorption Electrospray Ionization (Desi-Ms), Elahe Honarvar Jun 2019

Improving Protein Analysis By Desorption Electrospray Ionization (Desi-Ms), Elahe Honarvar

Dissertations

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) is one of the most well-known and versatile techniques for analyzing a broad range of molecules and it has become one of the leading techniques to study biomolecules, such as proteins. ESI-MS can accurately determine the molecular weight of proteins and provide information about their peptide sequence, post-translational modifications as well as their interaction with other molecules.

During ESI-MS analysis, by spraying a sample of proteins, prepared in form of a solution, charged droplets are produced using an electric field. As the solvent molecules gradually evaporate from these droplets, freely hovering bare protein ions remain. …

Development Of Heat Transfer Correlations For Low-Reynolds Numbers, Flows In Horizontal Circular Pipes, Latif Eyada Ibraheem Jun 2019

Development Of Heat Transfer Correlations For Low-Reynolds Numbers, Flows In Horizontal Circular Pipes, Latif Eyada Ibraheem

Dissertations

Turbulent flows are intrinsic to most fluid-based engineering systems, including internal combustion engines. In these devices, mixing, scalar transport and heat transfer are both critical for proper operation and challenging to model. In previous work, Kreun et al. [1] modeled a pre-heated intake manifold of a Diesel engine for cold-start simulations. Accurately predicting the heat transfer at the intake port proved to be a challenging task. Existing heat transfer correlations yielded predictions which were (at best) within 20% of the measured values. The discrepancy was attributed to a mismatch between the range of applicability of existing heat transfer models and …

Methodology To Qualify And Monitor A Chemically Bonded Sand System Used In Foundries, Prayag Pravinbhai Patel Jun 2019

Methodology To Qualify And Monitor A Chemically Bonded Sand System Used In Foundries, Prayag Pravinbhai Patel

Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to establish a new quality control framework that combines a statistical process control (SPC) approach to casting quality for chemically bonded sand systems used in foundries. Foundries in the United States use the American Foundry Society standardized sand testing to monitor chemically bonded sand systems. These standardized tests are inefficient for two reasons. Firstly, standard tests are based on mechanical, physical, chemical and thermal properties of a sand system that do not consider interaction between these properties, but sand casting processes are inherently thermo-mechanical, thermo-chemical and thermo-physical. Secondly, these tests can only detect large …

Teachers Use And Perceptions Of The Impact Of Response To Intervention (Rti) On Co-Teaching At The Secondary Level In General Education Classrooms, Hawazen Alasiri

Dissertations

When working together, Response to Intervention (RTI) and co-teaching can serve the needs of teachers and their students in a duet that Murawski and Hughes (2009) called “a logical combination for successful systematic change” (p. 267). According to the U.S. Department of Education, the number of students with disabilities, ages 6–21, who spent most of the school day in general classrooms in regular schools increased from 33% in 1990 to 62% in 2014 (U.S. Department of Education, 2016). With twice as many students with disabilities attending general education classrooms today, it is essential that all stakeholders in the education field …
