Preceptor Effectiveness As A Mediator Of Relationship Between Psychological Empowerment And Newly Registered Nurses' Intent To Stay, Deborah Taffe
Preceptor Effectiveness As A Mediator Of Relationship Between Psychological Empowerment And Newly Registered Nurses' Intent To Stay, Deborah Taffe
Dissertations
The nursing profession is currently experiencing a nursing shortage that is projected to worsen. One in five newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) leaves the profession within the second year of practice (National Healthcare Retention and RN Staffing Report, 2018). Work empowerment has been shown to decrease turnover rates among nurses: However, the factors that mediate this concept have not been fully explored.
The purpose of this study was to investigate nurses' perceived preceptor effectiveness as a mediator of the relationship between psychological empowerment during the transition from an academic environment into practice and intent to stay in practice for NLRNs …
A Model To Facilitate Transformative Learning In Learner Nurses At Nursing Education Institutions, Tebogo A. Tsimane
A Model To Facilitate Transformative Learning In Learner Nurses At Nursing Education Institutions, Tebogo A. Tsimane
Dissertations
Transformative learning is a learner-centered process of learning that actively engages learners in self-examination and critical reflection on assumptions and results in the development of competence and self-confidence in new roles and relationships that bring about change in specific environments, rather than rote learners who are inherently deficient, lacking change attributes such as clinical reasoning and judgment.
The purpose of the study is to describe and evaluate a model with guidelines to facilitate transformative learning in nursing education institutions. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design for theory generation was used. The study was conducted in four phases. Phase …

Simulated Clinical Experience: An Investigation Of Emotion Understanding And Management, Neena W. Jones
Simulated Clinical Experience: An Investigation Of Emotion Understanding And Management, Neena W. Jones
Dissertations
Many investigators have documented that lack of emotional intelligence (EI) in professional nursing correlates with patient dissatisfaction, negative patient outcomes, and litigation. However, much less information is available to nurse educators for an effective instructional strategy to increase EI skills, specifically emotion understanding and management (the most influential branches of EI) in nursing students. Grounded in the theory of EI and the theory of simulation, the purpose of this quantitative quasi experimental study was to introduce educational technology as a useful strategy for influencing EI in a convenience sample of 88 second semester students in a baccalaureate program. Research questions …

Bedside Nurses' Perceptions Of Pursuing An Academic Career As Nursing Faculty, Suzanne L. Benfield
Bedside Nurses' Perceptions Of Pursuing An Academic Career As Nursing Faculty, Suzanne L. Benfield
Dissertations
There is a nursing faculty shortage at a Mid-Atlantic associate degree nursing program. In response, program administrators have hired adjunct faculty with bachelor of science in nursing degrees (BSNs), hired full-time faculty with master of science in nursing degrees in areas other than education who also are not certified nurse educators, and reduced its minimum requirement for nursing faculty clinical experience. The nursing faculty shortage combined with the resulting gaps in practice are problematic because they may (a) negatively influence the program's ability to produce degreed nurses; (b) increase faculty workload; (c) decrease the quality of student education, which may …

Dissertations
Healthcare that includes high performing interprofessional clinical teams (IPTs) is one recommended strategy to provide optimal quality and cost-effective care delivery. Highly functional IPTs are characterized by effective communication, trust, respect, collaboration, information-sharing, and conflict resolution and are more efficient than individual providers working alone. Internally, IPT members' relationships and understanding of both one's own professional identity and others' role and responsibilities are crucial to team functionality and effectiveness. Externally, factors including regulatory practice environments might influence the effectiveness and performance of both individual team members and the team overall. Inconsistencies between states' practice authority (SPA) for advanced practice nurses …

Toward Enhancement Of Clinical Judgment And Critical Thinking Simulation In The Classroom, Roxie L. Barnes
Dissertations
Health-care systems are changing, thus changing the expectations and requirements for nursing students entering the profession (Kaddoura, 2011). Nursing education must address the changes and focus on the development of critical thinking and clinical reasoning. When students are unable to apply clinical reasoning or clinical judgment into practice, there is an increase in potential for negative patient outcomes (Jones, Passos-Neto, & Braghiroli, 2015). Case-based learning (CBL) and simulation-based learning (SBL) are both active learning methods that can enhance development of critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment (Forneris et al., 2015). The purpose is to compare the use of CBL …
