A Mixed Methods Study Of The Symptom Experience Following Endovascular Treatment For Lower Extremity Peripheral Arterial Disease, Serena Greenhaw Gramling

Dissertations

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the most understudied and undertreated diseases affecting three to ten percent of the general population. Patients with lower extremity PAD must manage multiple symptoms including pain in the hips, thighs, and calves during rest and physical activity. However, evidence is limited about patients' experience, especially following treatment. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore the symptom experience of individuals with peripheral arterial disease following endovascular treatment including perceptions of treatment benefit and concerns.

An Analytical Guide To Gonzalo Vidal’S Suite De La Postguerra [Post-War Suite], Jairo Garcia Valencia

Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Although Gonzalo Vidal (1863-1946) is arguably one of the most influential Colombian composers, sadly his music has been forgotten and remains unknown. Unfortunately, little is known about his work as a pianist, composer, teacher, capellmeister, conductor, and even as a writer of prose. Even though Vidal has a vast catalogue of works, the majority of which is piano music, his fame is limited to being known as the composer of the anthem of the department of Antioquia.

The purpose of this document is to focus on Vidal’s last piano compositions, which were a set entitled Suite de la Postguerra …

Evaluation Of A School Nurse-Led Intervention For Children With Severe Obesity In New York City Schools, Krista Schroeder

Dissertations

Severe childhood obesity, the fastest growing subcategory of childhood obesity, affects 4-6% of youth. Children from racial/ethnic minority groups and low income households are disproportionately affected. Severe obesity increases risk for metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, musculoskeletal problems, poor health-related quality of life, bullying, low self-worth, absenteeism, and adult obesity. One method of addressing childhood obesity is through school-based interventions. School nurses may be well-suited to lead obesity interventions because of their healthcare expertise, long-term relationships with students and families, and availability to students without financial burden.

Since its inception in 1925, the FNS has survived many challenges and still exists today. This historical analysis of the FNS' s 'early years' (1925-1960) yields valuable insights into not only on how such a remarkable feat was achieved but also on how these insights could benefit nurses today. The contemporary nursing profession is struggling with many of the same internal …

The Influence Of Nurse Manager Leadership Style Factors On The Perception Of Staff Nurse Structural Empowerment, Work Engagement, And Intent To Stay, Jennifer Moody Manning

Dissertations

Healthcare is facing many challenges which impact all practice settings. Both nurse managers and staff nurses play critical roles in overcoming the challenges faced in healthcare today. Staff nurses are intimately involved in providing care to their patients but not always involved in the decisions impacting care delivery (Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), 2010; Institute of Medicine (IOM), 2010). Evidence has shown when staff nurses are not engaged and empowered in their work they are more likely to become dissatisfied in their job resulting in increased turnover and adverse patient outcomes (Hauck, Griffin & Fitzpatrick, 2011; Jenaro, Flores, Orgaz …

Giving Up Their Place In The Walls: The Lived Experience Of Community College Nursing Faculty Who Leave The Profession Of Teaching, Cherry A. Karl

Dissertations

Community college nursing faculty members are essential to the continuation and growth of the profession of nursing. Every loss of a nursing faculty member represents an even greater loss to the practice of nursing within the health care system. Previous research has documented the serious and inter-related shortage of both nursing professionals and nursing faculty. This phenomenological study explores the underlying themes leading to the decisions made by nursing educators to leave the practice of teaching, and presents strategies for preserving and strengthening the position of nursing faculty within the community college. The guiding question for this inquiry is: "What …

The Self-Directed Goal Theory Experiment: A Mixed Methods Study Of Personal Development Goal-Setting Programs And Self-Efficacy, Tara N. Strickland

Dissertations

Andragogy is not dead; it may be simply lying dormant until its essential component, self-directed learning, revives it again. The fact is that self-directed learning can be formal or informal. This mixed methods study explored the informal side of self-directed learning, concentrating on self-help (a popularized form of personal development goalsetting). Despite a thriving self-help market, several personal development goal-setting programs focus more on goal achievement, little on goal planning, and even less on the individual. A comparative analysis of autonomous, guided, and self-directed personal goal-setting programs determined if self-directedness maximizes self-efficacy. Additionally, the researcher’s original Self-Directed Goal Theory and …

Coping Strategies, Social Support, And Self-Care Among Young Women With Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Jessica L. Tillman

Dissertations

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a spectrum of inflammatory disorders of the female upper genital tract, is a serious complication of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that may lead to chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, and tubal infertility. Although PID treatment is critical for the preservation of fertility and health-related quality of life, many young women diagnosed with PID do not fully adhere to treatment recommendations. Interventions focused on clinician practices, patient education, and behavioral modeling have generated limited improvements in outpatient PID treatment adherence among young women, thereby suggesting the influence of other determinants, such as psychosocial factors. Coping and social …

A Quality Improvement Project To Assess Anxiety Of Family Members Who Receive Standard Communication During The Intraoperative Period, Ashlie E. Sinclair

Dissertations

Introduction: The waiting period for surgical patients' family members can be stressful, causing increased frustration and fear. Most patients and families do not regularly experience the surgical environment in the same way that the operating room (OR) staff do, making this area unfamiliar. If there are inconsistent and insufficient information provided to the family, anxiety levels may increase. It is essential that staff attend to family members' needs while the patient is in surgery. The evidence is overwhelming that structured patient status updates to family members and varying waiting room techniques are critical in decreasing their anxiety.

Methods: This quality …

The Experiences Of Cancer Nurses' Existential Care In Response To The Threat Of Patients' Mortality Within The Culture Of Care, Doris Yuet Lan Leung

Dissertations

Patients are living longer with many types of cancer; however, often they face sudden possibilities of dying, not only due to their advancing illness but due to complications of their treatment. Consequently, they can express substantial existential distress. Nurses' close proximity to patients puts them in an ideal place to assess and engage with patients' existential distress; yet this kind of research has been scarce. The purpose of this doctoral thesis was to explore nurses' experiences of being with patients facing the threat of mortality.

Human 5’-Tailed Mirtrons Are Processed By Rnasep, Mohammad Farid Zia Oct 2021

Human 5’-Tailed Mirtrons Are Processed By Rnasep, Mohammad Farid Zia

Dissertations

Approximately a thousand microRNAs (miRNAs) are documented from human cells. A third appear to transit non-canonical pathways that typically bypass processing by Drosha, the dedicated nuclear miRNA producing enzyme. The largest class of non-canonical miRNAs are mirtrons which eschew Drosha to mature through spliceosome activity. While mirtrons are found in several configurations, the vast majority of human mirtron species are 5’-tailed. For these mirtrons, a 3’ splice site defines the 3’ end of their hairpin precursor while a “tail” of variable length separates the 5’ base of the hairpin from the nearest splice site. How this tail is removed is …

Dissertations

The terms serious or life-threatening illness now included in current palliative care literature indicate the broadened scope of palliative care. However, the change in defining terminology has not consistently translated to a broadened understanding or advanced clinical practice for many healthcare professionals in acute care settings. The purpose of this research study was to discover NGRNs' perceptions, meanings, and use of principles of PC for seriously ill patients in acute care settings. The research question for this study was: What are NGRNs' lived experiences of providing PC for seriously ill patients in acute care settings?
