What’S Religion Got To Do With It?: Differing Religiosity Domains’ Association With College Students’ Sexual Consent During First-Time Intercourse, Kaylee Richmond
What’S Religion Got To Do With It?: Differing Religiosity Domains’ Association With College Students’ Sexual Consent During First-Time Intercourse, Kaylee Richmond
Dissertations
Within the U.S., 36% of women and 17% of men report experiencing sexual assault (Smith et al., 2017). The absence of sexual consent is often regarded as a defining component of sexual assault (Beres, 2014); thus, a potential area to examine to decrease rates of perpetration and victimization. To date, there has been a lack of research on contextual factors that are likely related to sexual consent, with a general focus on external consent (i.e., verbal/behavioral indicators; Muehlenhard et al., 2016). The present study examined the role of a contextual factor, religiosity, on sexual consent processes during the context of …

Acculturation, Self-Efficacy And Breastfeeding Behaviors In A Sample Of Hispanic Women, Ivonne F. Hernandez
Dissertations
Breastfeeding confers immunological, physiological and psychological benefits for the infant and mother as well as social and economic benefits to the nation. The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 has established national objectives for the initiation and duration of breastfeeding at 82% initiation, 61% at six months and 34% at one year. In addition, they have set goals for exclusive breastfeeding at 3 months to be 46% and 25% at 6 months of infant's age. Currently breastfeeding initiation is at the highest recorded level of 76.9%, yet significant disparities exist (CDC, 2012). The purpose …
Breastfeeding Education In University Nursing Programs, Penny R. Marzalik
Breastfeeding Education In University Nursing Programs, Penny R. Marzalik
Dissertations
Past goals, future goals, and current statistics regarding breastfeeding rates in the United States support the need for university programs to address the topic of breastfeeding education. Currently, exclusive breastfeeding rates are 46.3% initiation and 17.2% continuation at 6 months of age, well below the goals of 75% initiation and 50% continuation. Nurses are the largest group of health care professionals, and research has shown that their care influences women's breastfeeding experience. The literature informs us that although nurses most often have positive attitudes towards breastfeeding, they lack knowledge about breastfeeding support.
The purpose of this study was to describe …
Implementation Of Remote Patient Monitoring To Improve Medication Adherence And Efficacy In Patients With Asthma And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Quality Improvement Project, Barbara A. Werner
Dissertations
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are long-term respiratory diseases that can adversely affect an individual's quality of life and inflict financial strain on the patient, family, and healthcare system (Kocks et al., 2018). Adherence to prescribed inhaler medication is an integral component of effective disease management. Remote patient monitoring may serve as an effective means to proactively measure adherence with inhaled medications to improve respiratory health outcomes and decrease avoidable healthcare utilization (George & Bender, 2019). An inobtrusive device attaches to the metered dose inhaler to passively monitor the use and electronically transmit the information to a digital …

Embattled Learning: Education And Emancipation In The Post-Civil War Upper South, Lucas Somers
Dissertations
This dissertation examines the establishment of schools for and by formerly enslaved African Americans in Kentucky and Tennessee in the decade after the Civil War, analyzing the different individuals and organizations that supported or opposed those efforts. Members of Black communities strove to secure an education for children and adults while doing everything in their power to maintain control of those schools. Widespread poverty, racism, and uncertain political status necessitated that African Americans accept help from outsiders, especially from teachers and agents sent by the federal government and northern benevolent associations. The central argument is that the ultimate failure to …

An Efficient Computational Method For Causal Inference In High-Dimensional Data: Neighborhood-Based Cross Fitting, Oluwagbenga David Agboola
An Efficient Computational Method For Causal Inference In High-Dimensional Data: Neighborhood-Based Cross Fitting, Oluwagbenga David Agboola
Dissertations
High-dimensional data are increasingly popular in various physical science and social science disciplines. This study proposed a new computationally efficient sample splitting method called Neighborhood-Based Cross Fitting (NBCF) for double machine learning in causal inference on high-dimensional data. A common existing approach of repeatedly splitting data was suggested to address the overfitting problem in high-dimensional statistics, however it is computationally expensive. The proposed method deals well with the problem of post-selection bias in causal inference in the presence of high-dimensional confounders. Also, it provides an equivalent performance in unbiased estimation as repeated data splitting, which is suggested to expand the …
Creating, Destroying And Preserving Coherence With Quantum Channels, Masaya Takahashi
Creating, Destroying And Preserving Coherence With Quantum Channels, Masaya Takahashi
Dissertations
Quantum coherence is a fundamental property of quantum systems that can be studied within the framework of a quantum resource theory. In chapter 2, we consider how much coherence can be either generated or destroyed on a bipartite system when the action is restricted to local unitary operations. For pure states, we find that the relative entropy of entanglement and the robustness of entanglement provide tight lower bounds on the amount of coherence that can be destroyed by local unitaries, as measured by the relative entropy and L1 measures of coherence, respectively. We then study the amount of bipartite pure …
Implementing Theory-Based Debriefing In The Clinical Learning Environment To Improve Teaching And Learning Outcomes, Adrienne Denise Wilk
Implementing Theory-Based Debriefing In The Clinical Learning Environment To Improve Teaching And Learning Outcomes, Adrienne Denise Wilk
Dissertations
For decades, the hallmark of nursing education has been experiential learning in a hands-on clinical environment (Kolb, 1984), allowing students to utilize clinical reasoning and decision-making skills and apply theoretical knowledge to patient encounters (Gubrud-Howe, 2020). To optimize student learning, nurse educators must develop skills to implement teaching methods that promote higher-level reasoning skills in students. One teaching method that is useful in the clinical setting and promotes higher-level reasoning is debriefing. While there were robust findings in the literature about debriefing simulated clinical experiences and the positive effect these had on students’ learning and reasoning (Cantrell, 2008; Dreifuerst, 2012; …

Toeplitz Matrix-Based Goodness Of Fit Test Statistics For Vector Autoregressive Moving Average Models, Hanadi Yahia Alomari
Toeplitz Matrix-Based Goodness Of Fit Test Statistics For Vector Autoregressive Moving Average Models, Hanadi Yahia Alomari
Dissertations
In multivariate time series analysis, a Vector Autoregressive Moving Average model would be fitted to the data. Then, diagnostic checking methods are used to assess the goodness of fit for the fitted model. Different multivariate Portmanteau goodness of fit tests had been proposed for multivariate time series analysis. However, these previous tests suffer from low power in many situations, such as small sample sizes. To overcome this, a modified measure of autocorrelation was recently proposed by Fisher and Robbins (2018) using a logarithmic transformation of the determinant of a Toeplitz matrix that contains the multivariate correlations matrices. This new measure …
