Policy Knowledge Communication In Nursing, Curtiss J. Vavra Jul 2022

Policy Knowledge Communication In Nursing, Curtiss J. Vavra

Dissertations

Evidence-based practices in nursing improve patient outcomes, decrease healthcare costs, and can be implemented with policies and procedures. However, there is limited literature describing how nurses acquire policy knowledge, the dissemination of which may require a significant investment of resources by a hospital. The purpose of this study was to learn more about how nurses obtain policy knowledge. Rogers's diffusion of innovations theory guided the examination of communication channels and how they relate to the formation of policy knowledge. The research questions were designed to gather information on the relationship of policy communication channels, demographic factors, and the frequency of …

Nursing Program Leaders' Perceptions Of Interprofessional Education And Curriculum Practices Within Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Education, Michelle R. Gierach Jul 2022

Nursing Program Leaders' Perceptions Of Interprofessional Education And Curriculum Practices Within Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Education, Michelle R. Gierach

Dissertations

The national emphasis on interprofessional education (IPE) within health professions education is causing widespread curriculum reform across the nation. As individual schools are reforming their curricula, it is important to assess if the curricular approaches institutions are taking to integrate IPE into pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing education align with effective practices that have been demonstrated by research. This study focused on gaining an understanding of perceptions and characteristics of IPE within the Interprofessional Education for Collaborative Patient-Centered Practice (IECPCP) framework developed by D'Amour and Oandasan (2005).

Problem: Pediatric delirium is highly prevalent in the intensive care setting, as much as seventy to eighty-seven percent. Kalvas & Harrison (2020) found that sixty-six percent of critically ill children in a pediatric intensive care unit suffered from a diagnosis of delirium. Delirium has been widely linked with increased costs, mortality, and length of stay.

Methods: The quality improvement (QI) project used a descriptive design to collect retrospective and prospective data before and after an individualized bedside education session was completed. The QI project used a purposive convenience sampling to assess the ability to accurately identify the presence of …

Quality Improvement Competency Development For Correctional Nursing Leaders, Angela Chandler Jul 2022

Quality Improvement Competency Development For Correctional Nursing Leaders, Angela Chandler

Dissertations

Nurse leaders are often promoted with little to no leadership development. Lack of development is a leading cause of turnover. Leadership development is crucial to retaining qualified leaders and the National Academy of Medicine identified that quality improvement (QI) competency development for nursing leaders is critical to improved healthcare. To invest in leader development and improve QI competence, a structured, weekly, coaching intervention was used for four consecutive weeks to reinforce QI concepts and assist in development of a QI project plan for nursing leaders. The Beliefs, Attitudes, Skills, and Confidence in Quality Improvement (BASiC- QI) instrument was used before …

Evaluation Of Neonatal Ankyloglossia, Ellen M. Ray Jul 2022

Evaluation Of Neonatal Ankyloglossia, Ellen M. Ray

Dissertations

Problem Ankyloglossia occurs when the tongue cannot extend past the gums or lips due to frenulum restriction. In breast feeding, proper movement of the tongue around the nipple is hindered causing difficulty for the infant to obtain a proper latch. This may result in slow weight gain (SWG), failure to thrive (FTT), and dehydration due to poor milk production. Evaluating for ankyloglossia is difficult, however, the Hazelbaker Ankyloglossia Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function (HATLFF) may be of benefit.

Method Observational descriptive design utilizing a retrospective medical record review. The HATLFF was utilized in full term neonates suspected of ankyloglossia in …

Evaluation Of Pre-Procedural Phone Call Effectiveness Before A Colonoscopy, Rachel Schoelch Jul 2022

Evaluation Of Pre-Procedural Phone Call Effectiveness Before A Colonoscopy, Rachel Schoelch

Methods: An observational descriptive study was conducted utilizing retrospective and prospective chart review. Comparisons were drawn between the 2021 pre intervention group and the 2022 post intervention group regarding the impact of linking lubricating eye ointment orders …

Implementation Of Quantitative Blood Loss Tool To Detect Postpartum Hemorrhage After Vaginal Delivery, Rachael Williams Jul 2022

Implementation Of Quantitative Blood Loss Tool To Detect Postpartum Hemorrhage After Vaginal Delivery, Rachael Williams

Dissertations

Problem Maternal deaths and comorbidities related to postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) continue to be high despite being quite preventable. The delay in recognition and treatment of PPH due to the use of imprecise estimated blood loss (EBL) instead of precise measurement using quantitative blood loss (QBL) attributes to this issue.

Methods For this quality improvement (QI) project, a descriptive, observational design was used to gather quantitative data regarding QBL implementation instead of EBL as well as the number of PPH’s identified. A pilot cohort of staff nurses participated by documenting QBL two hours after each delivery. The nurses were given an …

Left Ventricular Assist Device (Lvad) Driveline Infection Rates Between Two Different Dressing Methods, Gretchen Compton

Dissertations

Problem: Heart failure has a growing impact on Americans, and this contributes to an increased number of patients requiring treatment for advanced heart failure. Typical treatment options may include cardiac transplant or the implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The use of an LVAD requires sterile management of an external driveline site. Driveline infections are a common complication in this patient population and can lead to chronic complications. There are no published guidelines on the management of the driveline site. This project aimed to provide evidence that can be used in the establishment of standardized guidelines for driveline …
