Abstract
Background: Inpatient, staff nurse burnout negatively impacts nurses’ mental and physical health, hospital nurse retention and turnover, and patient care. The Stress First Aid for Health Workers program attempts to bolster resilience and subsequently reduce burnout among mental health nurses in this project.
Method: This quality improvement (QI) project was an observational pre-post survey design and was conducted on a cohort sample of inpatient, behavioral health nurses at an urban, mid-sized, Midwestern hospital psychiatric unit to assess personal, work-related, client-related, and overall burnout utilizing the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) tool to quantitatively measure burnout pre- and three months post-implementation …
Seeing Children’S Futures Through Rose Colored Glasses: Does Optimism Bias Toward Reproduction Discourage Anti-Natalism?, Faith L. Brown
Seeing Children’S Futures Through Rose Colored Glasses: Does Optimism Bias Toward Reproduction Discourage Anti-Natalism?, Faith L. Brown
Dissertations
In order to examine the possibility that individuals continue having children and holding positive views toward reproduction regardless of how much their future children might suffer because of an optimism bias, I conducted two experimental studies examining the effect of optimism manipulation on people’s opinions of anti-natalism, the position that it is morally wrong for individuals to reproduce. In Study 1, participants received an optimism (v. pessimism or control) manipulation about either themselves or a future child before being asked to read an essay about anti-natalism and a control essay having to do with parents being involved in school …
Repeating Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Courses: A Qualitative Study Of Stories Of Persistence, Catherine Dillinger
Repeating Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Courses: A Qualitative Study Of Stories Of Persistence, Catherine Dillinger
Dissertations
Accelerated baccalaureate nursing programs (ABSN) have grown to meet the needs of the health care industry. These short-term programs attract unique groups of learners that have achieved baccalaureate degrees in other disciplines and are recruited to an intense, fast-paced program that differs from a traditional baccalaureate nursing program. The significance of the topic of retaining, assisting, and success of second-degree learners in an accelerated baccalaureate nursing program is critical to the nursing education specialty. Related factors influencing perseverance need to be better understood to improve academic success among ABSN students. The study addressed a gap in the literature pertaining to …

Patient Responses To Copd Symptoms: The Relationship Of Dyspnea And Fatigue To Activities Of Daily Living, Inhaler Use, And Self-Care Capability, Mary G. Cantley
Dissertations
Chronic obstructive pulmonary (COPD) disease is the fourth leading cause of death in the US. COPD care is concentrated in the outpatient setting and requires the complex management of activities of daily living (ADL's), inhaled medications, and self-care capability. Previous studies have not determined how daily dyspnea and fatigue affect care or alter activities when symptoms worsen.
The goal of this study was to discover the influence of dyspnea and fatigue on ADL's, inhaler use, and self-care capability of COPD outpatients.

Biomarker, Treatment, And Socio-Demographic Factors Affecting Opioid Use Disorder Treatment Retention, Fernand A. De Los Reyes
Dissertations
Increasing mortality from opioid overdose and low treatment engagement are significant public health concerns. Along with increasing health care and criminal justice enforcement costs, there is an urgent need to study the factors associated with treatment retention in opioid use disorder. The study investigated the relative impact of the biomarker cholesterol on treatment retention in an opioid treatment program (OTP) clinic. Further, it examined the medical comorbidities, treatment, and socio-demographic variables that impact opioid use disorder treatment retention. This study was a secondary analysis of patient health records (n=267) in an opioid treatment program clinic. The study employed a hierarchical …
Factors Associated With New Hospital Nurses' Self-Efficacy In Providing Palliative End-Of-Life Care, Penny Marie Briese
Factors Associated With New Hospital Nurses' Self-Efficacy In Providing Palliative End-Of-Life Care, Penny Marie Briese
Dissertations
Self-efficacy is defined as confidence in one's competence; the ability to successfully accomplish tasks and achieve favorable outcomes (Bandura, 1997). Many nurses today say they feel their undergraduate education was inadequate for them to feel competent to provide palliative and EOL patient care. (Chiplaskey, 2016; Scherlin & Quinn, 2016; Zheng et al., 2018).). Inadequate EOL preparation also results in nurses experiencing distress, death anxiety, burnout, feeling overwhelmed and leaving practice within just a few years (Friedman et al., 2011; Gaw, 2012; Kovner et al., 2006; Parry, 2008; Silverstein, 2017, November 28; Suzuki et al., 2008; Wilson & Kirshbaum, 2013). Classroom Climate, Culture, Parenting Skills, And Student Grit, Karen Ochoa
Dissertations
The education system has noted that student motivation and perseverance are lacking, yet the focus on standardized testing over the last decade has increased the rigor and expectations in the classroom. As such, educational researchers are always looking for new and inventive ways to enhance student achievement without increasing the financial burden on the schools. Grit is the non-cognitive skill that a person processes that enable them to work hard, endure, and persevere through challenging times. A person who exhibits grit often succeeds over those who have the cognitive ability but do not have grit. Children in countries with collectivist …

Ellerhein Girls' Choir: Seventy Years Of Choral Excellence, Bobby Helms
Dissertations
ABSTRACT
For hundreds of years, choral music has been central to Estonian culture. Prior to its founding in 1918, music and choral singing were deeply ingrained into the hearts and souls of the Estonian people. In 1869, Estonia, known as a nation of singing, held its first song festival. It continues to be held every five years. Thousands of choral members participate as part of the mass choir and join together raising their voices to celebrate the independence of Estonia. Although there are many choirs in Estonia, few have gained the status of Ellerhein Girls' Choir.
Ellerhein’s history of choral …

Social Class And Employability: Equalizing Perceived Competence And Warmth To Control Biased Decision-Making During Resumé Screening, Mindy Gambino
Dissertations
Implicit bias during the resumé screening process can adversely impact the ability of an organization to achieve a competitive advantage through human capital (Coff & Kryscynski, 2011). The purpose of this study was to determine if teaching resumé screeners how to control biased decision-making during resumé screening results in equal employability ratings for upper-middle and lower-middle-class applicants. The study used a quantitative, causal, quasi-experimental, single-group pretest-post-test design. The target population was people in the United States who screen resumés as part of their current job duties (Thomas, 2018). The researcher used Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) to recruit participants.
Participants received …
Closing The Preparedness-Readiness Gap In New School Administration, Melissa Williams Stephanski
Closing The Preparedness-Readiness Gap In New School Administration, Melissa Williams Stephanski
Dissertations
School leadership is a vital aspect of K-12 public education. As graduates exit university principal preparation programs, they possess certification indicating preparedness for the role of a school administrator. Upon being hired, new school administrators frequently find themselves theoretically prepared but, in reality, unready for the myriad of responsibilities, isolation, and accountability accompanying the title. Over the years, the role of the school administrator has become overwhelming, often hindering the effectiveness of those doing the job, especially those new to the profession. The gap between the preparedness and readiness of new school administrators is a critical issue to be addressed …

Investigating Novice Nurses’ Perceptions Of Academic Dishonesty During Nursing Education, Christy Michelle Gough
Dissertations
Academic dishonesty in nursing education has been an ongoing concern to the nursing profession for many decades. There is a concern that students who engage in academic dishonesty in the classroom setting might also engage in dishonest behaviors in the professional setting. Many studies in the literature explored nursing students’ perceptions of academic dishonesty during nursing education; however, there was limited literature on novice nurses’ perceptions of academic dishonesty and its impact on the nursing profession. Novice nurses provided the voice of recent nursing students as well as the voice of a professional nurse. The purpose of this qualitative study …

The College Admissions Process For Returning Citizens And Ex-Offenders At A Small, Private Midwestern College, Donna Bradley
Dissertations
It is well-known that higher education faces the challenge of declining enrollment, particularly post-COVID. However, there is a population of students that higher education institutions may overlook, returning citizens and ex-offenders. Reintegration is a challenging endeavor for returning citizens and ex-offenders, without regard to the length of incarceration or the circumstances surrounding system-involvement. They face barriers and stigmatization while attempting to achieve some sense of normalization post-incarceration, including the pursuit of higher education. Using mixed methodology, specifically a qualitative case study and descriptive statistics, the extant research examined the college admission process for returning citizens and ex-offenders through the lens …
Self-Regulation In The Learning Experiences Of School Choice Students, Melody Lynn Schmidt
Self-Regulation In The Learning Experiences Of School Choice Students, Melody Lynn Schmidt
Dissertations
This study explores self-regulation in the learning experiences of school choice students who have attended a traditional public school and a charter public school. Research shows self-regulation is a form of non-cognitive executive functioning characterized by many observable traits children employ in their learning environments. Self-regulation development in the learning investments students make relates to school mobility, social identity, and connectedness while navigating their learning amid school changes (Golden, 2017; Langenkamp, 2016). School mobility may impact students by lowering self-regulation and increasing school dropout through compromised social identity and connectedness (Jdaitawi, 2015; Rumberger & Larson, 1998). Understanding the distinction between …

A Program Evaluation Of The Career Pathways Cte Program At One High School, Terrace Brown
Dissertations
ABSTRACT
A leading solution to many education problems in our country is Career and Technical Education (CTE). Jacob (2017) indicated that by combining traditional academic skills with hands-on experience that provide hands-on training, students can acquire the "soft skills" necessary to succeed in today's workplace. As the 21st-Century economy grows more complex, the role of career and technical education is critical to the success of America's future through increased student engagement, innovative math, science, and literacy integration, and meeting employer and economic need. In my study, I sought to determine the perceptions of administrators and instructional staff at one school …

Dissertations
Superintendents in the K-12 education system in the United States are called upon to ameliorate problems and issues derived from many internal and external forces since its inception. Current literature reveals that, superintendents face complex challenges to improve district level educational outcomes for students within environments that are more volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) and do require a shift from dominant traditional (hierarchal and control) leadership approaches. The aim of this qualitative case study of interviews is to represent the single voice of a first-year female superintendent of color’s (Asian, Indian descent) perspective, perceptions, thoughts, and experiences. The interviews …

Exploring Teacher Self-Efficacy In Nurse Educators: A Mixed Method Study, Wendi Noelle Liverman
Dissertations
In the face of a rapidly changing healthcare environment and a nursing shortage, schools of nursing are pressed to produce higher numbers of fully prepared nurse graduates. In other disciplines, teacher self-efficacy has been linked to better student outcomes, faculty instructional methods, and student engagement. This construct has not been well studied in nursing education. This mixed methods study investigated how current faculty perceive their teacher self-efficacy as measured by the Self-Efficacy Towards Teaching Inventory-Nursing Education (SETTI-NE) survey and identified contributing factors, followed by interviews gathering qualitative data from nine faculty members of varying SETTI-NE scores as well as varying …
An Elementary School Principal’S Practices And A Reduced Equity Gap: A Case Study, April Hrovat
An Elementary School Principal’S Practices And A Reduced Equity Gap: A Case Study, April Hrovat
Dissertations
During the last 60 years, national standardized testing has confirmed a gap in reading and math scores between White and Black students, often called the achievement, opportunity, equity, or race-based gap (Coleman et al., 1966; NCES, 2021). Researchers have attempted to identify factors that influence these student outcomes (Jayavant, 2016). Leithwood et al. (2004) found that the practices and behaviors of building leaders "are second only to classroom instruction in school-related factors that contribute to what students learn at school" (p. 5). Based on their significant impact, research has been conducted to identify effective social justice and mainstream educational leadership …
Investigating Nurses’ Career Choice Through The Social Congnitive Career Theory’S Self-Management Model, Tina Howard
Investigating Nurses’ Career Choice Through The Social Congnitive Career Theory’S Self-Management Model, Tina Howard
Dissertations
The United States is in a healthcare crisis. There is a substantial shortage of nurses (Buerhaus et al., 2017). Making matters worse is the nurse faculty shortage (Daw et al., 2018). As the population ages and uses more resources, there is a need for even more nurses. The aging population includes nursing faculty. The average age of a nurse faculty member is approximately ten years from retirement (Oermann et al., 2015). The exodus of nurses from the profession adds to the problem because the number of students graduating from nursing school already falls short. The crisis can become catastrophic if …

Dissertations
The healthcare environment mandates its staff are able to communicate freely and openly to provide high quality patient care leading to positive patient outcomes. As the largest healthcare profession and those who are at the bedside most often with patients, registered nurses play a vital role in ensuring these outcomes. As advocates for the most vulnerable, nurses must communicate often but before doing so, they must feel psychologically safe. Psychological safety is how one perceives the benefits, risks, and consequences of asking a question, sharing an opinion, reporting an error, or revealing one’s true self to others. It is a …
Three Essays On Financial Economics, Megersa Daksa
Three Essays On Financial Economics, Megersa Daksa
Dissertations
This study presents three essays on financial economics. In the first essay, we examine how monetary policy shocks affect risk aversion and uncertainty, as well as how risk aversion and uncertainty spread across financial markets. Although a recent study shows that monetary policy influences risk aversion and uncertainty in global stock markets, there are no studies on risk aversion and uncertainty spillover across stock, currency, and commodity markets. Following the method of Bekaert et al. (2013), we decompose the implied volatility indexes (VIX's) for the SP500, U.S. exchange rate, gold and crude oil into risk aversion and uncertainty. The decomposition …
