The Caregiver Of The Child With Cerebral Palsy: The Unnoticed Victim, Taylor Tusinski
The Caregiver Of The Child With Cerebral Palsy: The Unnoticed Victim, Taylor Tusinski
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to better understand the overall quality of life (QoL) in the primary caregiver who provides care to the child or adolescent, aged 0-17 with mild, moderate, or severe Cerebral Palsy (CP). This study aligned with a nonexperimental or observational design and examined the severity level of CP and the QoL in the mother and/or father.
For research question 1, regression results indicated that the overall model did not significantly predict the mother’s and father’s QoL [R2 = .000, R2 adj = -.012, F(1,80) = .003, p = .957]. Regression results indicated that …
Perceptions Of Teaching Effectiveness Of Part-Time And Full-Time Clinical Nursing Faculty Of Bsn Education, Kimberly L. De Santis
Perceptions Of Teaching Effectiveness Of Part-Time And Full-Time Clinical Nursing Faculty Of Bsn Education, Kimberly L. De Santis
Dissertations
The United States faces a critical shortage of full-time registered nurses, which is directly affected by the shortage of nurse educators. Many schools of nursing are already seeing the impact as qualified program applicants are being turned away due to the lack of qualified educators available to teach them. The trend has become to employ increasing numbers of part-time faculty who have a clinical focus in their education. There is much debate about the clinical teaching effectiveness of part-time faculty. One way to assess quality of education is to assess teacher effectiveness. The purpose of this quantitative, descriptive, study was …
A Critical Examination Of Clinical Teaching In Undergraduate Nurse Education, Lisa Mckenna
A Critical Examination Of Clinical Teaching In Undergraduate Nurse Education, Lisa Mckenna
Dissertations
Clinical education is an integral part of undergraduate nurse education. Whilst extensive research has explored roles of clinical teachers and clinical teaching, largely through perceptions of their effectiveness, little is known from clinical teachers about how they perceive their work, factors that shape their work, and what clinical teachers themselves shape. It is the development of clinical teaching both from historical and current perspectives that formed the basis for this unique study which adds new understandings to existing knowledge around this important area of nurse education.
Σπλαγχνιζομαι And The Characterization Of The Markan Jesus, Jonathan W. Bryant
Σπλαγχνιζομαι And The Characterization Of The Markan Jesus, Jonathan W. Bryant
Dissertations
Amid scholarly studies both of the miracle stories of the Markan Jesus and of the characterization of the Markan Jesus, little attention has been given to the role of Jesus’s emotions as portrayed in those accounts—though references to Jesus’ emotions appear quite frequently in the Gospel of Mark. This dissertation seeks to fill this lacuna through a detailed analysis of the portrayal of Jesus’s compassion (σπλαγχνίζομαι) in the Markan miracle stories. I first examine the accounts of other miracle workers from ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish literature to discover how emotions feature in the depictions of miracle workers likely known in …

Using Natural Language Processing To Evaluate Electronic Health Records Of Patients With Ovarian Cancer For Documentation Of Goals Of Care, Hillarie Elizabeth Joehl
Using Natural Language Processing To Evaluate Electronic Health Records Of Patients With Ovarian Cancer For Documentation Of Goals Of Care, Hillarie Elizabeth Joehl
Dissertations
Growing evidence supports the benefits of serious illness communication including goals of care (GOC) discussions and documentation in the electronic health record (EHR). Patients who discuss end-of-life (EOL) care with their clinicians are more likely to have positive outcomes including better-reported quality of life, less distress, and a higher likelihood of receiving care consistent with their preferences. Limited research suggests only a small fraction of ovarian cancer patients have such discussions with their clinicians. Using a novel natural language processing (NLP) methodology, this retrospective and descriptive study explores EHRs for patients with ovarian cancer to characterize documentation of GOC. Using …
What’S Medical School Got To Do With It?: Health Professionals And Medical Education In Maternal Health Disparities, Skky Martin
What’S Medical School Got To Do With It?: Health Professionals And Medical Education In Maternal Health Disparities, Skky Martin
Dissertations
A plethora of research exists on maternal health disparities, highlighting both its variation across ethnoracial identity and causes of it. Similarly, much research exists on the professional socialization of medical students. However, there is a lack of research that bridges the two seemingly disparate literature together. Maternal health outcomes are greatly influenced by doctor-patient interactions. During medical school, medical students learn what it means to be a physician and how to interact with patients. A key component of the professional socialization of medical students is the medical school curriculum, including both pre-clinical courses and clerkships. It is through the curriculum …
Creative Disobedience: Dorothee Sölle's Political Theology And Ethics For U.S. Christian Contexts, Dannis Matteson
Creative Disobedience: Dorothee Sölle's Political Theology And Ethics For U.S. Christian Contexts, Dannis Matteson
Dissertations
This dissertation adapts Dorothee Sölle’s concept of creative disobedience to account for those histories of obedience to structures of domination and to foster moral agency that disrupts and dismantles structures of domination. The first two chapters contextualize and summarize Dorothee Sölle’s critique of obedience and her warning against the way in which the obedient social character yields a “Christofascist” society. Chapter II considers the extent to which Christofascism already exists in US society today through Andrew L. Whitehead and Samuel L. Perry’s study of the political and cultural prevalence of Christian nationalism. Chapter III contextualizes Dorothee Sölle’s theoretical critique of …

The Importance Of Caregivers, Family, And Context For Child Welfare Involved Youth And A National Child Sample: A Structural Equation Modeling Perspective, Nathan Michael Lutz
Dissertations
This bundled, three-study dissertation examines how the relationships that children have with adult family members impact mental health outcomes, including internalizing symptoms and externalizing behaviors. The first study examines the moderating effect of relationship satisfaction on the relationship between kin involvement and child psychopathology. The second study uses data from the 2017 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), examining the mediating effect of the parent-child relationship on the associations across various systems in which children are embedded and mental health diagnoses. The third paper examined the interactions between both family strengths and caregiver involvement with the parent child relationship and …
The Value Of Engagement: Examining The Relationship Between Lgbtq+ Student Involvement & Alumni Engagement, Jonathan J. Okstad
The Value Of Engagement: Examining The Relationship Between Lgbtq+ Student Involvement & Alumni Engagement, Jonathan J. Okstad
Dissertations
With the shifting dynamics within higher education, there is a stronger reliance and need for financial support in order to aid the institution’s growth and financial health. One particular segment of their donor base that institutions will need to cultivate in order to respond to these dynamics is among their alumni. Simultaneously, while many institutions have made significant advancements for resources, services, and inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) people, barriers to their academic, economic, social, and mental health still exist. Using student involvement, queer identity development, and identity-based alumni engagement theoretical models as guides, this study …
The Ethics Of Advance Care Planning, Ciaran Folliard Rhys
The Ethics Of Advance Care Planning, Ciaran Folliard Rhys
Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic subjected millions of Americans to alienated deaths in institutional settings. Given that the default response to health crises is to go to the Emergency Department, isolation protocol limited the care and support ill and potentially dying people could receive at the bedside. Crisis standards of care also cut off meaningful discussions of end of life care preferences. Communication barriers regarding end of life care existed well before the pandemic, however. This dissertation proposes a new approach to the concept of Advance Care Planning (ACP), or the process of deciding what kinds of care one would prefer in …

Objective: Previous research suggests that tailored summer camp programs for youth with specific medical conditions, such as spina bifida (SB), may help campers improve independence and medical self-management skills. The evidence-based Independence Intervention at Camp Independence is geared towards enhancing the medical self-management skills and social skills of youth with SB, with the goal of improving their independence (O'Mahar et al., 2010). The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of the Independence Intervention at Camp Independence on first-time and veteran campers. This study aimed to (1) explore similarities and differences in first-time and veteran campers on demographics, health-related self-management …
Examining The Bidirectional Associations Between Parenting And Adolescent Coping In The Context Of Exposure To Community Violence, Jenny Phan
Dissertations
Coping refers to all the strategies and processes that an individual uses to eliminate, reduce or tolerate stress (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984; Rosario et al., 2003). Within the general coping literature, research has observed that use of approach-oriented coping strategies is associated with positive psychosocial outcomes, and avoidant-oriented coping strategies is associated with negative psychosocial outcomes (e.g., Compas et al., 2001; Wadsworth & Compas, 2002). However, most of these studies have focused exclusively or predominantly on middle-class White participants (e.g., Compas et al., 2001; Wadsworth & Compas, 2002) which may limit the generalizability of these findings to other groups. Further, …
Recovery From A Coronary Event: Understanding The Nature Of The Patient's Journey, Laura P. Rossi
Recovery From A Coronary Event: Understanding The Nature Of The Patient's Journey, Laura P. Rossi
Dissertations
As new technology has improved the diagnosis and treatments of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), our understanding of how patients recover and return to their daily life is limited. The fast pace with which individuals move through the health care system has produced a new set of patient experiences for which systems and providers are unprepared. Life after ACS and current treatment may be very different from prior understandings of recovery after a heart attack. This study explored the trajectories of recovery following ACS and identified implications for effective care planning.
Interactions Of Lewis Acids And Carbonyls In The Presence Of Ligands Or Additives: How Solution Behavior Differs And The Implication On Catalytic Systems, Sophi Rose Todtz
Interactions Of Lewis Acids And Carbonyls In The Presence Of Ligands Or Additives: How Solution Behavior Differs And The Implication On Catalytic Systems, Sophi Rose Todtz
Dissertations
Lewis acids have proven extremely valuable to the field of organic synthesis. Their diverse application in reactions of carbonyl-containing substrates has caused a multitude of efforts towards characterization of solution interactions between Lewis bases and Lewis acids. Though Lewis initially described a 1:1 interaction between one acid and one base, our lab has previously employed in-situ IR spectroscopy to characterize 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 solution structures under catalytic conditions. These insights have played a critical role in our understanding of catalyst behavior in carbonyl-containing systems, allowing us to describe byproduct inhibition in the carbonyl-olefin metathesis mechanism. The research presented in …
Institutional Experiences Of Justice-Involved Adolescents: Profiles, Predictors, And Post-Release Associations, Elizabeth Sargent
Institutional Experiences Of Justice-Involved Adolescents: Profiles, Predictors, And Post-Release Associations, Elizabeth Sargent
Dissertations
Experiences within juvenile justice placements have long been a topic of concern amongst researchers and policy makers, with institutional violence exposure and harsh treatment being two such reasons for concern. The majority of adolescents who enter the justice system already have extensive violence exposure, which can continue while they are detained through victimization and witnessed violence. One’s adjustment to justice settings is influenced by characteristics and experiences prior to placement, and institutional experiences may also have influences on mental health and behavior after release. In the current study, reports from justice-involved adolescents were used to 1) identify profiles of institutional …
Enshrining Memory: The Production Of An American Catholic Past, Emily Arledge
Enshrining Memory: The Production Of An American Catholic Past, Emily Arledge
Dissertations
American Catholics throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries advocated for a canonized American. To promote a candidate, organizers of canonization causes collected objects related to the person’s life and curated exhibits to educate Catholics about the candidate. American shrines became intertwined with creating museums or heritage tourism sites for Catholics to encounter their faith and learn about their place within the nation’s history. This dissertation argues that shrines create an American Catholic public memory by interpreting the lives of saints and potential saints through the American past, situating themselves into a national story, and reproducing a saint’s memory for future …
Making Lemonade Out Of Lemons: How Millennial Black Women Teachers Navigate K-12 Educational Spaces, Janese L. Nolan
Making Lemonade Out Of Lemons: How Millennial Black Women Teachers Navigate K-12 Educational Spaces, Janese L. Nolan
Dissertations
Research suggests that Millennial Black women teachers (MBWTs) are having experiences that are complex and contradictory. Research also suggests that those experiences continue to be underexamined and unexplained. To illuminate the unique socio-political positions of MBWTs, in this study, I examined their socio-political context and navigational tactics while also exploring whether Lemonade Navigational theory could illuminate the contradictory experiences of MBWTs given their generational epistemology.
The Way To Well-Being Through Safety, Trust And Freedom: A Youth-Driven Framework For Older Youth In Child Welfare, Bridget Marie Colacchio
The Way To Well-Being Through Safety, Trust And Freedom: A Youth-Driven Framework For Older Youth In Child Welfare, Bridget Marie Colacchio
Dissertations
The current study looks at the experience of well-being among young people who experienced foster care in the United States. The objective of the project was to seek a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of well-being from the perspective of those with most direct knowledge of it: youth in care themselves. Chapter 1 includes an overview of the social, historical, policy, and clinical landscape underpinning the study, starting with a summary of the current state of the child welfare system in the United States. This includes a look at two key contextual factors – structural racism and neoliberalism – that …
Identifying Factors Affecting Saudi Nurses’ Intentions To Report Medication Errors In Arar Hospitals, Ohoud Aldughmi
Identifying Factors Affecting Saudi Nurses’ Intentions To Report Medication Errors In Arar Hospitals, Ohoud Aldughmi
Dissertations
Background: Medication errors are the most common safety issues in Saudi Arabia. To avoid medication errors, Saudi hospitals need to identify the causes of errors by encouraging reporting errors. Most Saudi nurses do not report errors because of the blaming culture. Therefore, Saudi nurses need a psychological safe environment that encourages nurses to admit and report errors. Even if establishing a good error reporting system is helpful, Saudi health organizations need to discover nurses' perceptions, attitudes, norms, behaviors, and intentions regarding medication error reporting. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting the intention of Saudi …
Pandemic Pedagogies: Fatalistic Or Black Feminist?, Sydney Marie Simone Curtis
Pandemic Pedagogies: Fatalistic Or Black Feminist?, Sydney Marie Simone Curtis
Dissertations
The research question I pursued is: “How do Black feminist instructors who identify as spiritual define and embody pandemic pedagogy?” Pandemic pedagogy is a term used to describe the experiences of teachers and students at HEIs and K-12 schools as they navigate teaching and learning during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (Schwartzman, 2020). I identified two general approaches in the current literature on pandemic pedagogies in postsecondary education: “fatalistic” approaches that bemoan the challenges faced by teachers and students during the pandemic, and “responsive” approaches that describe attempted solutions to these challenges, without addressing root causes. Conversely, “transformative” pandemic pedagogies are …
Barriers And Facilitators To Library Social Work Practice In The United States: A Mixed-Methods Study, Margaret Ann Paauw
Barriers And Facilitators To Library Social Work Practice In The United States: A Mixed-Methods Study, Margaret Ann Paauw
Dissertations
Background and Purpose: Library social work is an emerging field where libraries and social workers partner to meet the psychosocial needs of library patrons. With libraries being situated as the last truly public spaces, they are positioned as centers of communities and have called upon the field of social work to assist in navigating the changing landscape of their patrons. Library social work has been around for over ten years, yet research has struggled to keep up with practice. This study was the first nationwide study on library social work from the perspective of the people who are doing the …
A Descriptive Exploration Of Quality And Opportunities In Outdoor Urban Play Spaces: The Case Of Chicago Public Schools, Katherine Anne Varey
A Descriptive Exploration Of Quality And Opportunities In Outdoor Urban Play Spaces: The Case Of Chicago Public Schools, Katherine Anne Varey
Dissertations
This study investigated the quality of children’s play spaces, both green and built, in and surrounding urban public schools in Chicago. Given children’s declining access to nature and the outdoors, especially in urban areas, the aim of the study was to both assess the current potential for high-quality outdoor experiences, as well as to uncover additional, low-cost, and low-burden opportunities that may exist for enhancing outdoor experiences. Based on a selected sample of 60 Chicago Public Schools, this mixed methods study employed quantitative ratings of play space and neighborhood quality, geographic information systems (GIS) mapping techniques to show distribution of …
Peer Culture Of Block Play In An Early Childhood Classroom, Missi Jacobson
Peer Culture Of Block Play In An Early Childhood Classroom, Missi Jacobson
Dissertations
This is an ethnographic study of peer culture in the block play area of an early childhood classroom. Researchers have continued to position block play as an essential activity in early childhood classrooms. William Corsaro’s (1985, 1990, 1992, 2003, 2020) work on peer culture in young children and theory of interpretive reproduction is the framework that guided the methods and theoretical lens of this study. I was a participant-observer, using an “atypical adult” technique, in the block play area in a 4-5-year-old classroom with 22 children during a full school year. The children navigated how to build and play socially …
Environments Of War: The Pacific Northwest And The Waging Of World War Ii, Katherine L. Macica
Environments Of War: The Pacific Northwest And The Waging Of World War Ii, Katherine L. Macica
Dissertations
The Pacific Northwest served an essential role in America’s “Arsenal of Democracy.” Weapons and material produced in the Northwest proved essential to the Allied victory in World War II. These weapons served as agents of destruction abroad, but became agents of transformation for the places in which they were produced. This dissertation examines four of the most important resources and industries in Oregon and Washington to emerge or expand as a result of the war: hydroelectric power, forest products, shipbuilding, and aircraft manufacture. The wartime development of these industries profoundly reshaped the physical and economic landscape of the Pacific Northwest, …
Cancer Survivor Empowerment Through Patient-Reported Outcomes, Mary Patricia Johnston
Cancer Survivor Empowerment Through Patient-Reported Outcomes, Mary Patricia Johnston
Dissertations
Background: Conventional approaches for assessing and managing symptoms in cancer survivors are unlikely to be effective in cancer survivorship care because clinician-driven assessment limits the voice of the cancer survivor while the burden and complexity of cancer care increases. Yet, cancer survivors are not prepared for the shift from clinician-driven assessment and management of symptoms to cancer survivor self-report of symptoms and self-management of their own care. There are gaps in clinician assessment, and no studies describe how patient empowerment may facilitate the cancer survivor’s ability to assume the responsibilities of monitoring, reporting, and managing symptoms as the cancer survivor …
Warmth And Support: The Importance Of Parenting Behaviors On Child Symptoms Among Mexican Immigrant Families, Yvita Bustos
Warmth And Support: The Importance Of Parenting Behaviors On Child Symptoms Among Mexican Immigrant Families, Yvita Bustos
Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to expand research regarding warmth and support among low-income, Latino immigrant families, specifically families of Mexican-origin, and how these parenting behaviors impact child internalizing symptoms and externalizing behaviors. The first study titled, “Effects of Familism, Parenting, and Family Cohesion on Child Internalizing Symptoms among Mexican Immigrant Families” explored how familism may promote warmth and support, in addition to family cohesion, and how these factors may impact child internalizing symptoms during middle childhood among Mexican immigrant families. The second study, titled “Stress and Child Internalizing Symptoms: Examining the Moderating Role of Latino Fathers' Warmth and Support using Mixed …
Parenting And Psychosocial Functioning In Youth With Spina Bifida: Making Connections With Other Cns-Related Chronic Health Conditions, Adrien M. Winning
Parenting And Psychosocial Functioning In Youth With Spina Bifida: Making Connections With Other Cns-Related Chronic Health Conditions, Adrien M. Winning
Dissertations
Parenting practices have been linked to psychosocial outcomes in children who have chronic health conditions that affect the central nervous system (CNS), such as spina bifida (SB). However, there remains a need for (1) more evidence-based assessments that capture parenting in SB, (2) additional research focused on parenting in early childhood in SB, as this is a critical developmental period that has been understudied, and (3) systematic reviews that synthesize parenting research across CNS-related conditions to guide future work. This dissertation includes three papers that aim to address each of these gaps in the current literature. Specifically, the first study …
"To This You Were Called": Discipleship, Suffering, And Social Identity In First Peter, Shane Patrick Gormley
"To This You Were Called": Discipleship, Suffering, And Social Identity In First Peter, Shane Patrick Gormley
Dissertations
At the center of First Peter’s rhetoric stands an exhortation to “follow” in Christ’s footsteps (2:21). Several scholars have suggested (sometimes off-handedly or in a singular footnote) that this specific exhortation utilizes the technical language of “discipleship,” but only to support a particular piece of the letter’s paraenesis (2:18–25). I contend that such a suggestion, while a helpful place to start, does not go far enough. With this study, I propose that we may read First Peter comprehensively as a summons to discipleship in accord with ancient understandings of education, exemplified in the multifaceted system of Hellenistic paideia. I argue …
Simple Wellness: Perceptions Of Health In Persons Who Practice Voluntary Simplicity, Maryanne C. Murray
Simple Wellness: Perceptions Of Health In Persons Who Practice Voluntary Simplicity, Maryanne C. Murray
Dissertations
This qualitative dissertation examines the lived experience and perceptions of health in seven Seattle residents who practiced voluntary simplicity in the late twentieth- and early twenty-first century. The overarching research questions addressed inquiry into the internal process that leads to deliberate lifestyle change (simplification) and the meaning of voluntary simplicity practice in the health and wellbeing of the individual within his/her community.
