The purpose of this study was to propose a plan for guiding the ongoing standard-setting process in educational evaluation. The strategy used was to identify standard-setting issues, consider how other fields that have been successfully engaged in the standard-setting process have dealt with these issues, and propose how the field of educational evaluation might deal with these issues.

The experience in standard setting by the fields of accounting and auditing provided the structure for the study. These fields were chosen because they have been successful in setting and using standards for self-regulation, the function of standards which is perhaps most …

The Problem. The purpose of this inquiry was to study elementary principals' responses to decisions. Situations that required a decision from the principal originated: (1) with superordinates, (2) with peers, (3) with the principal himself, (4) with subordinates, (5) with students, and (6) outside the formal school organization. The principals' responses studied were: (1) rely on self, (2) consult with a confidante, (3) consult with a group, (4) delegate the decision to others, and (5) decide to make no decision. The Effects Of Two Training Procedures On The Acquisition And Retention Of A Sight-Word Vocabulary In Remedial Readers, Marilyn Monteiro

A Trial and Error and an Errorless procedure were used to teach phonically-irregular words to remedial readers. Subjects were six elementary-school students enrolled in a tutorial program. The Errorless procedure consisted of the use of an echoic prime, prompting and cumulative review over words mastered while the Trial and Error procedure consisted of the use of corrections for errors. Five subjects both mastered and retained more words with the Errorless procedure. The average percent of words mastered across all subjects was greater for the Errorless procedure (73% versus 43%), as was the average percent of words mastered on the six-week …

Programmed Review Tests In A Psi Course, Terry E. Mcsween

Two experiments demonstrated that carefully programmed review tests can result in 90% mastery of course objectives. Introductory psychology students participated in two group comparisons of the effectiveness of review tests versus no review tests. Review tests were programmed in that difficult items were repeated on several review tests. In both studies, students taking review quizzes outperformed students not taking review quizzes on final examinations. In addition, students not taking review quizzes were more likely to drop the course.

The purpose of the study was to validate a programmed text which was designed and written by the experimenter. Subjects in Group A, in Phase 1 of the experiment, were seven male and five female volunteers either working or enrolled as students in human service fields. Subjects in Group B, in Phase 2, were six females and four male graduate students enrolled in the Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse treatment seminar at Western Michigan University. A discrete-trial choice procedure, in which pigeons were exposed to one constant and one variable duration of reinforcement, was used to assess the effects of session-by-session manipulations in the variable reinforcement duration on the choice behavior of the subjects. Two groups of pigeons were used. Each subject in the first group was exposed to the same constant reinforcement duration (1.5, 3.0 or 6.0 sec), but different fixed-ratio trial completion requirements (5, 15 and 45). A discrete-trial choice procedure was conducted in which pigeons were sequentially exposed to four constant variable-interval schedules against each of which five different fixed-interval schedules were compared. The five fixed-interval comparison values were presented in a descending then ascending sequence for the first three variableinterval standard conditions. The fixed-interval sequence was reversed for the last variable-interval standard condition. The variableinterval standard conditions were 10, 20, 40, and 40 seconds, respectively, and the five fixed-interval comparison steps for each variable-interval standard condition ranged from a maximum of twice the variable-interval standard to continuous reinforcement in five equal steps. There is considerable variation in the estimation of youth, ages 12-17, who run away from home in America. This study using national self-report data estimates the proportion of youth who run away between the ages of 12-17 and the extent to which the loss of a parent contributes to running away by youth. Different types of parent role loss are examined as well as the effects of which parent is absent on running away.

Information on running away is assessed in a National Center for Health Statistics survey of approximately 6,768 youth ages 12-17. The proportion of youth who reported …

Problem. This study sought to determine if electromagnetic fields affect the visually evoked response of the visual cortex. From the fact that nerve impulses are propagated by the motions of electrically charged ions, the question arose whether the presence of an external electromagnetic field might affect either the propagation of nerve impulses traveling through the optical nerve pathway or the functioning of the visual cortex itself.
