The grand research question explored expert opinions and beliefs about …
A Single Session Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy In A Group Format To Promote Health-Related Behavior Change In Nutrition And Sleep: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Thi Anh Tran
Dissertations
Nutrition and sleep are important health-related behaviors for which only a small percentage of the population meet recommended guidelines. To impact population-health it is important to develop focused, flexible, efficient, and efficacious interventions. This study examined the efficacy of a 60-minute Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention in a group presentation format to initiate change in nutrition and sleep related behaviors in college students. Thirty-two collegians (M age = 18.55 [.85], 66% female, 34% Hispanic, 25% white) were randomized to receive ACT focusing on nutrition (n = 18 participants across 4 groups) or sleep (n = 14 participants across 3 …
From Pages To Pixels: Library Workers’ Perceptions Of Power In The Digital Era, Sean Gaffney
From Pages To Pixels: Library Workers’ Perceptions Of Power In The Digital Era, Sean Gaffney
Dissertations
This work explores how library workers experience power during the era of digital transformation. As libraries transition from traditional knowledge repositories to dynamic, technology-driven information centers, power structures within these institutions are undergoing significant change. Despite the extensive implementation of digital transformation initiatives, there is a critical gap in understanding how digitalization is impacting employees’ experiences of power within the library context.
Drawing on French and Raven’s Bases of Social Power model, this study investigates how digital tools, platforms, and processes influence how power is perceived among library workers and its distribution and sources. A qualitative survey study was conducted …
Mothering, Leadership, And Career: A Narrative Analysis, Joanne Susan Roehm
Mothering, Leadership, And Career: A Narrative Analysis, Joanne Susan Roehm
Dissertations
In March 2020, much of the world was “sent home” from work and periods of lockdown began. In West Michigan, Friday, March 13 was the day that most workplaces closed their doors and employees began working from home for what was assumed to be a period of weeks. In the spring of 2020 between March and April, some million mothers living with school-age children left active work—either shifting into paid or unpaid leave, losing their job, or exiting the labor market all together.
The stories of mothers who experienced the “balancing act” of mothering and working at home during the …
All Children Matter: Developing Social Capital Through School Renewal Rounds, Jeremy Allen Andrick
All Children Matter: Developing Social Capital Through School Renewal Rounds, Jeremy Allen Andrick
Dissertations
Educational researchers and practitioners have worked for decades to improve student achievement and close achievement gaps. Knowing from multiple research studies that the teacher is the number one influence on student learning, these researchers and practitioners have attempted to grow teacher practice individually through teacher evaluation systems and across classrooms through group-based approaches such as PLCs, Learning Walks, and the Harvard Model of Instructional Rounds. The result is that pockets of instructional and academic excellence persist meaning that not all students benefit equitably across classrooms, schools, and districts. In response, this study explored the role of the HIL-Project inspired and …

An Exploration Of The Experiences That Influenced Black Males To Become Information Technology Professionals, Ronnie Mcmillian
Dissertations
Historically, the United States (U.S.) has led the world in the development of innovative high-tech solutions that increased employment opportunities, wages, productivity, and the economic growth of our nation. However, STEM workers are in great need to fill the millions of vacancies in the STEM workforce. Despite the increasing demand for STEM professionals, racial minorities, especially Blacks, continue to be disproportionately underrepresented in STEM. In order to adequately address the STEM workforce problem and remain competitive globally, the U.S. must motivate a much larger cross-section of its population to enter STEM fields. Since Blacks are disproportionately underrepresented in STEM, they …
Engaging Families In School-Based Physical Activity Promotion, Veronica Becerra
Engaging Families In School-Based Physical Activity Promotion, Veronica Becerra
Dissertations
This dissertation explored how schools promote and engage families in physical activity (PA) opportunities through two studies conducted in a Mountain West state. Study one explored strategies schools used to engage families in PA. Study two examined how a purposefully selected K-8 school developed family-school partnerships to support PA engagement through Epstein’s (2010) Six Types of Involvement framework.
Study one used a collective case study design guided by the following research questions:
- Q1.1 What strategies do schools implement to promote and engage families in physical activity programming?
- Q1.1a What tactics do schools use to implement these strategies?
- Q1.2 What are …
Study Of Yoga Intervention To Reduce Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Public School Educators, Leslie Marie Hillen
Study Of Yoga Intervention To Reduce Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Public School Educators, Leslie Marie Hillen
Dissertations
A problem in education was the great amount of stress teachers were under. Secondary Traumatic Stress “is the emotional duress that results when an individual hears about the first-hand trauma experiences of another” (The National Child Traumatic Stress Network, n.d.). When teachers feel they cannot work or are overwhelmed with the demands of education, this can be attributed to Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) (Caringi et al., 2015). Many teachers felt there was not enough support from the administration, as they not only deliver curriculum, but they also worried about the students’ mental health, home lives, hunger, and how to support …
University Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Sex Differences In Identification And Diagnosis, Lisa Mickelson
University Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Sex Differences In Identification And Diagnosis, Lisa Mickelson
Dissertations
University students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) face several risk factors and challenges compared to peers without ADHD that can impede their academic success and graduation. It is important to identify and diagnose ADHD prior to entering postsecondary settings to provide students with the best academic trajectory. This is particularly true as the number of students enrolled at universities with ADHD increases. Historically, ADHD has been considered a disorder with a childhood onset. However, past research primarily focused on males. More recent studies suggest females have a different ADHD etiological presentation than males, and that onset is more likely to occur …

This dissertation looked at patterns of cannabis use and impacts on communication and relationship satisfaction in couples that have been co-habitating for at least a year. A sample of 299 individual participants aged 21-69 were split into groups to look at concordant (where both partners either used or abstained from cannabis use) and discordant (where one partner used and the other abstained) relationship dynamics. The research revealed significant differences in communication and relationship satisfaction across these groups. Individuals in concordantabstaining partnerships reported higher levels of communication and relationship satisfaction compared to concordant-using couples. The lowest satisfaction levels were observed in …

Dissertations
Lennie Tristano's pedagogical model, established in the mid-20th century, transformed jazz education by focusing on ear training through singing with solos and melodic development based on a systematic, individualized approach to teaching and learning. This dissertation explores Tristano's model through the lens of educational psychology and cognitive science. While it does not profoundly explore either field, it highlights aspects relevant to Tristano's pedagogical strategies. The study addresses the following research questions: (1) What are the specific components of Tristano's model, and how did they reshape the jazz educational landscape of the 1950s? (2) How can these components be adapted to …

(Re)Birth Of The Cool: A Culturally Sustaining & Community Responsive Pedagogical Framework For Music Education, Mario Yuzo Nieto
Dissertations
This qualitative research study sought to illuminate how culturally sustaining, community responsive educational frameworks of pedagogy and leadership (Duncan-Andrade, 2022) can serve to increase recruitment, enrollment, retention, graduation, and overall satisfaction rates for ethnically minoritized student populations majoring or seeking degrees in fields of music in institutions of higher education. To investigate this question, a collective portraiture case study (Lawrence-Lightfoot & Davis, 1997; Stake, 1995) that compared music departments of two different universities located in a localized state, was conducted to analyze both the need for and effectiveness of such a framework. The data were collected by way of this …

Exploring Subclinical Delusional Ideation Within The Psychological Flexibility Model, Caleb Spencer Fogle
Exploring Subclinical Delusional Ideation Within The Psychological Flexibility Model, Caleb Spencer Fogle
Dissertations
Delusional thoughts are defined as stable beliefs that are not amenable to change when conflicting evidence is presented. Like psychosis broadly, endorsement of delusional ideation appears to exist on a continuum ranging from severe to common endorsement in non-clinical samples. Delusional ideation, particularly in a subclinical conceptualization, fails to receive adequate attention in psychological research despite potential connections to both negative (i.e., symptoms of psychopathology) and positive (i.e., quality of life) outcomes. The psychological flexibility model, a conceptualization of human wellness in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), may explain delusional ideation. The current study aimed to fill these gaps in …

Artificial Intelligence, Machines, Devices, And Robots: Mobilizing Humanness And Intelligence In The American Techno-Landscape, Carlos A. Batres
Dissertations
This dissertation is an ethnographic inquiry of artificial intelligence (AI) in the techno-landscape of three major metropolitan areas in the United States. It traces the ways in which both experts and non-experts talk about their interactions with AI via machines, robots, and other devices, and how the ways in which people deal with AI-technologies have come to shape how we think about our own ways of going about doing things. The goal is to discern what the social ramifications of this technology may be as relationships and relations are formed betwixt and between people and artificially intelligent things.
The Unconscious At Work: A Psychosocial Study Of Leaders' Unconscious Processes Impacting Participatory Change Leadership, Vanessa Hills
The Unconscious At Work: A Psychosocial Study Of Leaders' Unconscious Processes Impacting Participatory Change Leadership, Vanessa Hills
Dissertations
This dissertation explores the varied dynamics impacting how organizational leaders conceptualize and enact their roles in participatory change processes. To that end, a multiple-case study informed by a psycho-social approach and using Free Association Narrative Interview (FANI) methods was conducted. Each case was comprised of a single business leader. The findings, presented through individual case analyses and cross-case comparisons, reveal a discrepancy between leaders’ rhetoric and the reality of their change leadership behaviors. While leaders express support for collaborative change, factors such as a desire for control, fear of failure, and bias toward their own capabilities lead them to adopt …

Iranian-American Older Adults' Attitudes And Proactive Actions Toward Planning Ahead For End-Of-Life Care, Zahra Rahemi
Dissertations
Ethnically diverse older adults are the fastest growing population in the U.S. This population may experience transitional processes associated with immigration, acculturation, aging, and end of life (EOL). Advances in technology lead to increases in care options, which can cause uncertainty to make decisions for EOL. Unmade decisions about care prior to becoming unable to communicate are associated with burdens of lastminute decisions at EOL, unwanted intensive EOL treatments for people who may die naturally of old age, financial and emotional costs, and decreased quality of life. In the U.S., a multicultural country with a variety of care options, advance …
