Goodloe Harper Bell, Pioneer Seventh-Day Adventist Christian Educator, Allan G. Lindsay

Dissertations

The Seventh-day Adventist church operates a worldwide system of Christian education. The pioneer educator who played a most significant part in laying its foundations was Goodloe Harper Bell (1832-1899).

Bell was a public school teacher in central Michigan from 1851 through 1866. He became a Seventh-day Adventist in 1867 and was subsequently invited to open a small private school in Battle Creek, Michigan. The success attending this school encouraged the church to employ Bell as the first teacher to operate a denominationally sponsored school in 1872. The school became Battle Creek College in 1875. Until 1882, Bell taught a variety …

A Seventh-Day Adventist Concept Of The Kingdom Of God And Its Implication For Religious Education, Alvinus Desmond Bhola

Dissertations

Problem. While there are statements in the writings of Ellen G. White and those of Seventh-day Adventistscholars that seem to indicate that there is a relationship between the kingdom of God and education, it appears that no major work has been done to show, in a systematic manner, the relationship between the Adventist concept of the kingdom and its philosophy of education. The purpose of this study was to find what relationship exists between the SDA concept of the kingdom and its philosophy of education.

Method. This study, which is documentary in nature, is essentially a typological classification research effort. …

The Empirical Development Of A Preparation For Marriage Curriculum For Twelfth-Grade Students, Kevin John Howse

Dissertations

Problem. The purpose of this project was to develop an instructional product that would enrich the student's knowledge about dating and marriage, and teach specific relational skills.

Method. A systematic procedure was undertaken in the development and validation of the product. First, the content of a pre-marriage course was identified through an examination of a large sample of family-life texts, a survey of teacher criticisms and recommendations pertaining to the text Marriage (Christensen, 1980), and an analysis of a group of 317 youth using the Search Institute instrument, Youth Research Survey (Strommen, 1977; see appendix E). A History Of Seventh-Day Adventist Higher Education In The China Mission, 1888-1980, Handel Luke

Dissertations

After the Opium War, ending in 1842, western trade, religion, and education began entering China. Seventh-day Adventists entered China in 1888 but made few converts until they established schools.

China Training Institute was founded in 1910 by Dr. Harry W. Miller, who introduced a work-study program according to the Adventist philosophy of education advocated by Ellen White, a founder of the Church. When D. E. Rebok became president of the school in 1922, he further promoted this work-study program, moving the institution to a rural area at Chiao Tou Tseng in 1925. The Sino-Japanese Conflict in 1937-45 and the Civil …

The Role And Responsibilities Of Andrews University Trustees As Perceived By Themselves, David H. Bauer

Dissertations

Problem. The university board of trustees is the single most important group of the university to guide an institution in fulfilling its goals and objectives. While it may seem that trustees have a grasp of their responsibilities to the institution they serve, it appears that many do not.

This study surveys all who have ever served as trustees of Andrews University in order to: (1) indentify characteristics of trustees; (2) determine how trustees of Andrews University perceive/perceived their role as trustee in relationship to the twelve trustee responsibilities as listed by John Nason; (3) compare theresponses of church administrators with …

Perceived Family Emotional Relationships, Person Orientations, And Expected-Job-Satisfaction Among Teachers In Training In Mexico : A Test Of Anne Roe's Theory Of Vocational Interest And Choice With The General Culture Group, Saul Torres

Dissertations

Problem. Anne Roe claims that occupational interests and person orientation develop to a significant extent from the complex interaction of family emotional relationships in the formative years. She describes three basic family patters (Accepting, Concentrating, and Avoiding) of needs satisfaction as antecedents to the two types of person oriention within eight occupational group classifications. Research has mostly failed to support her global occupational predictions. This study explored the specific predictions for a General Culture Group.

Method. A sample of 298 subjects was used from the population of 311 teachers in training at the University of Montemorelos, N. L., Mexico. …
