Experiences Of Michigan Elementary National Board Certification Candidates, Kristen L. Dewitt
Experiences Of Michigan Elementary National Board Certification Candidates, Kristen L. Dewitt
Dissertations
Since 1987, over 55,000 teachers have achieved National Board Certification (NBC), which is claimed to be the highest symbol of teaching excellence and an identifier of accomplished teaching. To become certified, teachers must demonstrate a clear understanding of rigorous standards as defined by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
This phenomenological study examined ten Michigan elementary National Board Certified Teachers and candidates in hopes of better understanding the roles that motivation, support and pressure played in their decisions to seek NBC, and the influence the process had on their teaching. Four critical findings were identified.
The first critical finding …
Navigating Barriers Of African American Male Administrators: Manifesting Mechanisms For Career Advancement In Mainstream Institutions Of Higher Education, Orlando Lewis
Dissertations
The overall goal of this qualitative case study was to provide information to African American males regarding barriers they are challenged to navigate for career advancement at mainstream institutions of higher education. I utilized semi structured interviews to: (1) determine what barriers face African American male administrators in higher education that prevent advancement to executive positions; (2) identify and detail ways in which African American male administrators successfully navigate the barriers and; (3) identify coping mechanisms and support systems to aid African American men to navigate the identified barriers.
I identified three themes of barriers that reflect the route of …

Characterization Of Molecular Events Following Heavy Metal Cadmium Exposure: A Cellular Regulatory Symphony In Response To Early Cadmium Insult, Chin-Ju Jean Hsiao
Dissertations
Cadmium, a non-essential toxic heavy metal, has been classified as a human carcinogen and one of the most hazardous substances in our environment. Since it can circulate within the food chain, has a long biological half-life and can bio-accumulate, it has the potential to induce detrimental health effects linked to toxicity, cancer and chronic diseases.
In recent years progress has been made to dissect and understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of cadmium exposure. However, few studies have focused on investigating potential protective and/or defense mechanisms naturally applied by cells upon initial exposure, prior to any damage or toxic …

Some Applications Of Gaussian Quadrature And Neural Network Modeling In Earth Flows And Other Slow-Moving Landslides In Cohesive Slope Materials, Rennie Bwalya Kaunda
Some Applications Of Gaussian Quadrature And Neural Network Modeling In Earth Flows And Other Slow-Moving Landslides In Cohesive Slope Materials, Rennie Bwalya Kaunda
Dissertations
Geometrical changes and progressive displacements in earth flows and other slow moving landslides triggered by climatic changes may be addressed by digital modeling. Gaussian quadrature, a numerical integration technique though fixed points, is employed to compute geometrical areas defined by stratigraphic (soil or rock layering) units, vertical pole projections and a slip surface, based on kinematic admissibility. An example from the Lake Michigan coast shows that the total internal geometrical area is found to be preserved during the course of the progressive deformation. Displacement monitoring of the slope shows that it became less stable over a period of eleven years …

The Global Hepatic Transcriptional Response Of Male Fisher Rats To Dietary Aroclor 1254 Exposure, Trisha M. Basford
Dissertations
Dietary intake is a primary route for biomagnification of environmentally persistent polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) within humans and animals. Aroclor 1254, a mixture of PCBs, is associated with a variety of toxic responses including alterations in blood and lipid biochemistry and tumor promotion. Measurement of the transcriptional responses to low-level dietary exposure to A1254 has not been reported to date, and is important given the persistence of PCBs, and range of effects associated with exposure. The aims of this study were to characterize changes in rat hepatic global gene expression due to sub-acute and sub-chronic dietary exposure to A1254, and to …
Struggling With Race: A Grounded Theory Study Of The Developing Of Awareness Of Racism, Shawn Victoria Macdonald
Struggling With Race: A Grounded Theory Study Of The Developing Of Awareness Of Racism, Shawn Victoria Macdonald
Dissertations
White counselors and psychologists need to have a strong understanding of racism and white privilege for effective therapeutic work with people of color. However, many white counselors struggle in various ways with multicultural training. The phenomenon of white counselors in training struggling with awareness of racism and white privilege is well-recognized but not fully understood.
A constructivist grounded theory study was conducted to explore the phenomena of "struggle" among white counselors in training who were engaged in multicultural training. 33 interviews were conducted with 17 participants who were students in master's and doctoral level counseling, counseling psychology, and related programs. …

Structure-Function Studies Of Self- Assembling Flagellin Proteins Fromsalmonella Typhimurium And Aquifex Pyrophilus, Venkata Raghu Ram Malapaka
Dissertations
The eubacterial flagellum is a complex structure with an elongated extracellular filament that is primarily composed of a single protein termed flagellin. The highly conserved N-and C- termini of flagellin are important in its export and assembly, whereas the middle "hypervariable" region is highly variable in size across different species and is largely dispensable. InSalmonella typhimurium phase 1 flagellin (FliC), this hypervariable region encodes two solvent-exposed D2 and D3 domains. The functional role of this knob-like structural feature in motility remains unclear. The structural and physiological role of the hypervariable region in flagellar assembly, stability and cellular motility was investigated. …

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines low birth weight (LBW) as birthweight less than 2500 grams/5.5 pounds or below the 10th percentile for gestational age. LBW is a frequent marker of poor maternal/infant health outcome. A reduction in the incidence of LBW is a major public health initiative in the US. Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the magnitude of risk for low birth weight, defined in this study as neonatal birth weight less than 2500 grams, in relation to combined maternal alcohol and …
Prediction Of Mrna Polyadenylation Sites In The Human Genome And Mathematical Modeling Of Alternative Polyadenylation, Yiming Cheng
Prediction Of Mrna Polyadenylation Sites In The Human Genome And Mathematical Modeling Of Alternative Polyadenylation, Yiming Cheng
Dissertations
Messenger RNA (mRNA) polyadenylation plays many important roles in the cell, such as transcription termination, mRNA stability and transportation, and mRNA translation in eukaryotic cells. A large number of human and mouse genes have multiple polyadenylation sites (referred to as poly(A) sites) that lead to variable transcripts, some of which are translated into various protein products with different functions. However, the details about when and where the polyadenylation occurs, and how pre-mRNA switches from one poly(A) site to another are still unknown. This kind of 3 '-end processing can be regulated by the cell environment, cell cycle stage, and tissue …

Direct Simulations Of Cells Motions And Deformations In Flow, Quan Jin
Dissertations
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are used to study the motions and deformations of blood cells, especially leukocytes, in pressure driven flows in parallel plate channels with both smooth and uneven walls under adhesion force between the leukocytes and the channel wall.
Leukocytes are represented by two composite fluid models. The first model is the compound-drop model in which the cytoplasm and the nucleus are modeled as fluids, and the second one is the drop-rigid-particle model in which the cytoplasm is modeled as a fluid and the nucleus as a rigid particle. The adhesion force is computed using two adhesion force …
Formation Of Rdx Nanoparticles By Rapid Expansion Of Supercritical Solution : In Situ Characterization By Laser Scattering, Takuya Matsunaga
Formation Of Rdx Nanoparticles By Rapid Expansion Of Supercritical Solution : In Situ Characterization By Laser Scattering, Takuya Matsunaga
Dissertations
Cyclo-1,3,5-trimethylene-2,4,6-trinitramine (RDX), a well-known energetic material, is highly explosive. Reduction of the sensitivity of RDX is desired for safe handling and
storage in military applications. Data on the sensitivity of RDX in the 10-1000 µm crystal size range suggested that the impact sensitivity could be further reduced by reduction of the crystal size to the sub-micron or nano-scale (Armstrong, 1990). Recent research with nano-RDX obtained using Rapid Expansion of Supercritical Solutions (RESS) confirmed these expectations (Stepanov, 2005).
RESS process appeared to be one out of a few techniques of production of nanoscale energetic materials free of the risk of explosion. …
Ligand-Based Drug Design : I. Conformational Studies Of Gbr 12909 Analogs As Cocaine Antagonists; Ii. 3d-Qsar Studies Of Salvinorin A Analogs As Kappa Opioid Agonists, Deepangi Pandit
Dissertations
Ligand-based drug design (LBDD) techniques are applied when the structure of the receptor is unknown but when a series of compounds or ligands have been identified that show the biological activity of the interest. Generally, availability of a series of compounds with high activity, with no activity, and also with a range of intermediate activities for the desired biological target is required. It is common that structures of membrane-bound proteins (for example, monoamine transporter proteins and opioid receptor proteins) are unknown as these proteins are notoriously difficult to crystallize.
In Part I of this study, analogs of the flexible dopamine …

Comparative Immune Function In Wild Birds, Kevin David Matson
Comparative Immune Function In Wild Birds, Kevin David Matson
Dissertations
Over the last several decades, interest in quantifying immune function in comparative studies of wild animals has grown appreciably. Now, the field of ecological immunology is undergoing a transition, and ¿second generation¿ studies are being designed and carried out. With a greater appreciation of the complexity of immune systems, these second generation studies are commonly distinguished from their antecedents by making comparisons using multiple assays and including multiple species. I worked to advance this transition by developing novel approaches to comparative immunology, exploring the interrelationships among indices of immune function, and applying multiple indices to a question of comparative avian …

Examining Stage Theories And The Predisposition To Lead Within The Homosexual Community, David Robert Blair Edd
Examining Stage Theories And The Predisposition To Lead Within The Homosexual Community, David Robert Blair Edd
Dissertations
An application of homosexual stage-based self-integration theory suggests that until gay individuals have become fully self-integrated, their capacity for leadership within the community is diminished. Unfortunately, now more than ever before, leadership is needed in dealing with such pressing community issues as the disproportionately high suicide rate among gay teens, the ongoing struggle for gays to become fully self-integrated individuals, bringing equal rights to the gay population, and of course, developing a base of strong gay leaders to meet the ongoing challenges facing this population. To test the self-integration-leadership hypothesis, this study surveyed 150 men in gay Internet chat rooms …
Emerging Elements Of Leadership In A Complex System: A Cognitivist Approach, Kirsten Suzanne Hanson Edd
Emerging Elements Of Leadership In A Complex System: A Cognitivist Approach, Kirsten Suzanne Hanson Edd
Dissertations
As our world grows increasingly complicated at an intensified pace, leaders must be facile managers of complexity if organizations and society are to productively and peacefully evolve. Today’s global corporations are microcosms of complexity and have the potential to affect life for almost all other species. However, many organizations have not yet become aware of themselves as “living” and still operate as industrial age institutions with rationalist thinking traditionally dominating management practice. Many factors impact an organization’s overall effectiveness. Yet, executive leaders are seen as having the ability to influence change and play a vital role in helping people navigate …

Psychometric Testing Of The Walker's Feelings And Thoughts About Weight Scale In Taiwan, Shu-Wen Chang Phd
Dissertations
Background: The majority of women do not return to their pre-pregnant weight after six weeks postpartum in Taiwan. Excessive postpartum weight retention or gain can lead to long-term obesity and increase a woman's risk of major health problems. Trends among Taiwanese women reveal an increasing prevalence of obesity. Limiting postpartum weight retention is important for preventing long-term obesity development. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of postpartum weight gain among Taiwanese women using the modified Thriving Model (Walker & Kim, 2002) as the guiding conceptual framework and to examine the psychometric properties of a Chinese Version …
What’S So Hard About Algebra? A Grounded Theory Study Of Adult Algebra Learners, Michael Steele Reese Edd
What’S So Hard About Algebra? A Grounded Theory Study Of Adult Algebra Learners, Michael Steele Reese Edd
Dissertations
In California community colleges, fewer than half of students who enroll in basic algebra courses finish with a grade of C or better. Such a low success rate creates an intense demand on institutional resources, including faculty efforts, tutorial services, classroom availability, and financial aid. Furthermore, students who do poorly in algebra also tend to struggle in other quantitative courses. While research suggests that child algebra learners tend to exhibit specific misconceptions, not much is known about misconceptions held by adult algebra learners. Research does indicate, however, that certain general learning characteristics are common among adult learners. The present study …

Numerical Study Of Flow In Three-Dimensional Fiber Networks And Sedimentation Of Curved Fiber By Lattice Boltzmann Method, Xiaoying Rong
Numerical Study Of Flow In Three-Dimensional Fiber Networks And Sedimentation Of Curved Fiber By Lattice Boltzmann Method, Xiaoying Rong
Dissertations
Fiber network is modeled as a three-dimensional random cylindrical fiber network. Nonlinear behavior of fluid flowing through the fiber network is numerically simulated by using the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. Nonlinear relationship between the friction factor and the modified Reynolds number is simulated and analyzed by using the Fochheimer equation, which includes the quadratic term of velocity. There is a transition from linear to nonlinear region when the Reynolds numbers are sufficiently high, reflecting the inertial effect of the flows. The simulated permeability of such fiber network is compared to the experimental results and the finite element simulations.
Dynamic motions …
