The Message 2.0: Perceptions Of Success From Members Of The Founding Class Of Mc Squared Stem High School, Jeffrey D. Mcclellan
Dissertations
This dissertation examines the methods of learning from the student’s perspective in order to understand what made the first graduating class of MC Squared successful. The conceptual model of student success composed of non-academic factors of motivation, social connectedness, and self-management was used for the lens from which to understand the six students in depth. Through the research, it was uncovered that diversified learning environments, a mastery based assessment system, and an unwavering acceptance of students within a challenging and supportive environment are essential to the success achieved at MC Squared STEM High School. Lastly, the seminal contribution of this …

Motivational Interviewing Assessment And Behavior Therapy As A Stepped-Care Approach To The Treatment Of Adolescent Depression, Tanya N. Douleh
Motivational Interviewing Assessment And Behavior Therapy As A Stepped-Care Approach To The Treatment Of Adolescent Depression, Tanya N. Douleh
Dissertations
Depression is a significant public health concern with a lifetime prevalence of 24.01 for adolescents in grades 9-12 (Lewinsohn, Hops, Roberts, Seeley, & Andrews, 1993) and a point prevalence of 4-6% (Kessler, Avenevoli, & Ries, 2001). The risks associated with adolescent onset depression include comorbidity, depressive episodes continuing into adulthood, and suicidality. These risks make it imperative to develop effective treatments to address adolescent depression. Stepped care is an approach to treatment which involves treatment of illness using the least invasive measures first and moving toward more invasive treatment as indicated by ongoing assessment. Through a single-participant design, the current …
Reconceiving Self-Abnegation: Female Vulnerability As Embodied (Un)Sovereignty, Renee Lee Gardner
Reconceiving Self-Abnegation: Female Vulnerability As Embodied (Un)Sovereignty, Renee Lee Gardner
Dissertations
Liberal feminism views vulnerability as weakness and dominance as strength. This binary parallels nationalistic assertions of sovereignty. Within militaristic responses such as the U.S. retaliation to 9/11, however, we see the cost of refusing to acknowledge our vulnerability. In my analysis of eleven novels arising from eight distinct nation-states and representing historical moments from the final decades of slavery through the early post- 9/11 years, I use alternative (queer, postcolonial, Islamic) feminisms to read power in vulnerability. I explore female characters who deliberately self-abnegate – sacrificing their lives, bodies, voices, and children – but whose actions can be read as …
A Robust Estimate For The Bifurcating Autoregressive Model With Application To Cell Lineage Data, Tamer M. E. Elbayoumi
A Robust Estimate For The Bifurcating Autoregressive Model With Application To Cell Lineage Data, Tamer M. E. Elbayoumi
Dissertations
The bifurcating autoregressive model (BAR) is commonly used to model binary tree data. One application for this model relates to cell lineage data in biology. The purpose of studying the cell lineage process is to know whether the observed correlations between related cells are due to similarities in the environmental, inherited effects, or a combination of both of them. Because outliers in this kind of data are quite common, the need for a robust estimation procedure is necessary. A weighted L1 (WL1) estimate for estimating the parameters of the BAR model is considered. When the weights are constant, the estimate …
Discovery And Characterization Of A Tanapoxvirus Encoded Human Neuregulin Mimetic, David Jeng
Discovery And Characterization Of A Tanapoxvirus Encoded Human Neuregulin Mimetic, David Jeng
Dissertations
Studies on large dsDNA viruses such as poxviruses have been helpful in identifying a number of viral and cellular growth factors that contribute to our broad understanding of virus-host interaction. Orthopoxviruses and leporipoxviruses are among the most studied viruses in this aspect. However, tanapoxvirus (TPV) a member of the genus Yatapoxvirus, still remains largely unexplored, as the only known hosts for this virus are humans and monkeys. Here, we describe the initial characterization of an EGF-like growth factor mimicking human neuregulin from TPV, expressed by the TPV-15L gene. Assays using a baculovirus expressed and tagged TPV-15L protein demonstrated the ability …
Concept Graphs: Applications To Biomedical Text Categorization And Concept Extraction, Said Bleik
Concept Graphs: Applications To Biomedical Text Categorization And Concept Extraction, Said Bleik
Dissertations
As science advances, the underlying literature grows rapidly providing valuable knowledge mines for researchers and practitioners. The text content that makes up these knowledge collections is often unstructured and, thus, extracting relevant or novel information could be nontrivial and costly. In addition, human knowledge and expertise are being transformed into structured digital information in the form of vocabulary databases and ontologies. These knowledge bases hold substantial hierarchical and semantic relationships of common domain concepts. Consequently, automating learning tasks could be reinforced with those knowledge bases through constructing human-like representations of knowledge. This allows developing algorithms that simulate the human reasoning …
Stability And Precipitation Of Diverse Nanoparticles, Chintal Desai
Stability And Precipitation Of Diverse Nanoparticles, Chintal Desai
Dissertations
Nanotechnology is a rapidly growing industry that is exploiting the novel characteristics of materials manufactured at the nanoscale. Carbon based nanomaterials such as Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) and Detonation Nanodiamond (DND) possess unique properties and find a wide range of industrial applications. With the advent of mass production of such materials, there is a possibility of contamination of water resources. Depending on the surface properties and structures, they might aggregate and settle down, or be dispersed and transported by the water. Therefore, there is a need to develop an understanding of the fate of such materials in aqueous media. The understanding …

The Effect Of Nanoclays On The Properties Of Aspirin Modified Enteric Polymer Prepared By Hot-Melt Mixing, Nonjaros Chomcharn
Dissertations
Melt mixing in batch equipment or continuous extruders is a technique that recently gained the attention of the pharmaceutical industry. This dissertation investigates two controlled-release drug delivery systems. The first system, namely the enteric matrix, contains an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and plasticizer in an enteric polymer while in the second system a nanoclay is added to the enteric matrix, to produce a polymer nanocomposite. The first system employs hot-melt mixing to prepare a modified enteric matrix, as a delayed-release dosage form. Different concentrations of aspirin (ASP) ranging from 10 – 30% w/w are melt-mixed with a plasticized Eudragit® …

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are growing problem across the globe. One such HAB that’s recurring in the coastal waters of New York and New Jersey since mid-1980s, and has been reported in other countries recently, is brown tide bloom. The causal organism is a minute pel agophyte (cell diameter ~- 2µ m) Aureococcus anophagefferens. The brown tide bloom has been responsible for the severe ecological damage and economic loss (e.g. shellfishery) in the affected areas. This research focuses on finding a method to control brown tide blooms and explores the potential of natural chemical biocide hydrogen peroxide (H2 …
Escherichia Coli 2-Oxoglutarate Dehydrogenase Multienzyme Complex: E1 And E2 Substrate Specificty, E1 Carboligase Activity, And E2 Interchain Succinyl Transfer, Da Jeong Shim
Dissertations
Escherichia coli (E. coli) 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase multienzyme complex (OGDHc) contains three components: a thiamin di phosphate (ThD P) dependent 2-oxogl utarate dehydrogenase (E1 o), a di hydrol i poylsucci nyl transferase (E2o), and a di hydrol i poyl dehydrogenase (E3). The first two components carry out the principal reactions for succinyl CoA formation while the third one reoxidizes dihydrolipoamide to lipoamide. This mechanism is similar to other 2-oxoacid dehydrogenase complexes, including pyruvate dehydrogenases (PDHc) and branched-chain dehydrogenases.
E1o of the E. coli OGDHc was engineered to accept unnatural substrates. The natural substrate for E1 o is 2-oxogl utarate …

The Effects Of Rapid Stretch Injury On Rat Neocortical Cultures, George Constandinos Magou
The Effects Of Rapid Stretch Injury On Rat Neocortical Cultures, George Constandinos Magou
Dissertations
Several key biological mechanisms of traumatic injury to axons have been elucidated using in vitro stretch injury models. These models, however, are based on the experimentation of single cultures keeping productivity slow. Indeed, low yield has hindered important and well founded investigations requiring high throughput methods such as proteomic analyses. To meet this need, a multi-well high throughput injury device is engineered to accelerate and accommodate the next generation of traumatic brain injury research. This modular system stretch-injures neuronal cultures in either a 24-well culture plate format or six individual wells simultaneously. Custom software control allows the user to accurately …
Metal Based Reactive Nanocomposites Prepared By Cryomilling, Shasha Zhang
Metal Based Reactive Nanocomposites Prepared By Cryomilling, Shasha Zhang
Dissertations
Aluminum is one of the most commonly used metal fuel additives for propellants, explosives, and pyrotechnics. Recent interest has been focused on replacements for aluminum as fuel additives to achieve higher combustion temperatures and stronger pressure pulses for applications in advanced munitions systems. Two applications are addressed in this work. In the applications for explosives designed to defeat stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, it is of interest to develop multifunctional materials combining the high energy density of metal fuels with the biocidal activity of halogens. A challenge of this effort is to design and prepare powder-like Al-I2 materials which …
A Numerical Method For Electro-Kinetic Flow With Deformable Interfaces, Manman Ma
A Numerical Method For Electro-Kinetic Flow With Deformable Interfaces, Manman Ma
Dissertations
We consider two-phase flow of ionic fluids whose motion is driven by an imposed electric field. At a fluid-fluid interface, a screening cloud of ions develops and forms an electro-chemical double layer or ‘Debye layer’. The applied electric field acts on the ionic cloud it induces, resulting in a strong slip flow near the interface. This is known as ‘induced-charge electro-kinetic flow’, and is an important phenomenon in microfluidic applications and in the manipulation of biological cells. The models with two different cases including the fast or slow charging time scales are studied both analytically and numerically. We address a …
Gp Representation Space Reduction Using A Tiered Search Scheme, John Joseph Aleshunas
Gp Representation Space Reduction Using A Tiered Search Scheme, John Joseph Aleshunas
Dissertations
The size and complexity of a GP representation space is defined by the set of functions and terminals used, the arity of those functions, and the maximal depth of candidate solution trees in the space. Practice has shown that some means to reduce the size or bias the search must be provided. Adaptable Constrained Genetic Programming (ACGP) can discover beneficial substructures and probabilistically bias the search to promote the use of these substructures. ACGP has two operating modes: a more efficient low granularity mode (1st order heuristics) and a less efficient higher granularity mode (2nd order heuristics). Both of these …
The Investigation Of Iron(Ii) Complexes And Their Catalytic Applications, Matthew Joseph Lenze
The Investigation Of Iron(Ii) Complexes And Their Catalytic Applications, Matthew Joseph Lenze
Dissertations
Several new η5-indenyl (Ind) complexes of iron featuring phosphinooxazoline (PHOX) ligands were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized and in a few cases structurally. The complexes were synthesized using phosphinooxazoline ligands and the corresponding iron precursor [Fe(η5-Ind) I(CO)2], yielding novel piano-stool iron complexes of the general formula [Fe(η5-Ind)(CO)(PHOX)]+ in 73% to 81% isolated yields. The complexes were tested for their efficacy in a carbon-carbon bond formation known as the Mukaiyama aldol reaction. The [Fe(η5-Ind)(CO)(PHOX)]+ complexes were capable of activating the carbonyl of aromatic aldehydes towards by attack 1-(tertbutyldimethylsilyloxy)-1-methoxyethene to form the expected silyl protected β-hydroxyesters. In these complexes, the η5-η3 haptotropic shift …
Microglial Activation By Amyloid-Beta, Geeta Subhash Paranjape
Microglial Activation By Amyloid-Beta, Geeta Subhash Paranjape
Dissertations
Paranjape, Geeta S.,Ph.D.,University of Missouri-Saint Louis, May 2012. Aβ(1-42) Protofibrils But Not Fibrils Activate Microglia. Major Professor: Michael R. Nichols. One of the hallmark features of the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brain is the extracellular deposition of amyloid-β protein (Aβ) in both fibrillar (senile plaques) and diffuse forms. Significant proinflammatory markers including activated microglia and cytokines have been detected surrounding the plaques but are absent in diffuse areas suggesting that microglial activation is sensitive to Aβ structure. Since Aβ displays structural polymorphism in vitro, we sought to determine the relationship between Aβ aggregation state and microglial proinflammatory response. Size exclusion chromatography …
Habitat Characterization, Habitat Use And Associated Growth Of Juvenile Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) In A Mississippi Bay System: Implications For Stock Enhancement Practices, Joseph Read Hendon
Dissertations
The spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) is the most targeted recreational fishery species in Mississippi coastal waters. Consequently, the Seatrout Population Enhancement Cooperative stock enhancement program was initiated to investigate methods for supplementing this heavily exploited population. Given ecological data needs for both wild and hatchery-reared (HR) juveniles of the species, habitat mapping, directed sampling and a caging study were conducted. Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), oyster shell and non-vegetated substrates were mapped at water depths < 2 m in Point aux Chenes Bay, Mississippi, using a sidescan sonar, which provided more accurate estimations of habitat coverage, particularly for SAV, compared to point-based sampling. Applying habitat strata delineated from sidescan mapping, late-juvenile spotted seatrout [125 - 275 mm total length (TL)] were sampled in SAV, marsh-edge and non-vegetated habitats as part of a seasonal gill net survey conducted in 2011 and 2012. Spotted seatrout ranging from 138 to 485 mm TL were collected using a smallmesh gill net, and 65% of collected individuals fell within the targeted late-juvenile size range. Overall mean catch-per-unit-effort of C. nebulosus did not differ for abundance or biomass between years, but both metrics were significantly higher in SAV habitats. Employing cage enclosures that …
Community Metrics And Trophic Dynamics In Tidal Creeks In An Anthropogenically Fragmented, Coastal Landscape, Michael Robert Lowe
Community Metrics And Trophic Dynamics In Tidal Creeks In An Anthropogenically Fragmented, Coastal Landscape, Michael Robert Lowe
Dissertations
Salt marsh landscapes are among the most anthropogenically altered ecosystems in the world. Urbanization (i.e., accumulation of impervious cover and man made structrues) of the coastal landscape can disrupt the delivery of numerous ecosystem services. Among the many services provided by salt marsh habitats, they serves as the primary habitats for distinct macroinfauna (i.e., benthic and epibenthic macrofauna) and nekton (i.e., fish and decapod crustaceans) assemblages. In this dissertation, I used a number of metrics to test the overarching hypothesis that coastal urbanization has negative consequences for salt marsh faunal assemblages. Chapter I uses a landscape ecology approach to show …
First Year Baccalaureate Nursing Program Outcomes: Effects Of Prerequisite Courses And Preadmission Testing, Sonya House
First Year Baccalaureate Nursing Program Outcomes: Effects Of Prerequisite Courses And Preadmission Testing, Sonya House
Dissertations
Schools of Nursing are faced with the difficult task of selecting students for admission into nursing programs. This responsibility is challenging as the number of students applying to programs typically outweighs the number of students who can be admitted. As a result, faculty must identify methods for selecting students who have the greatest likelihood of being successful. As noted in the literature, attrition that occurs as the result of being academically underprepared is found in the beginning of nursing programs (Murray, Merriman, & Adamson, 2008). The central research question represents the purpose of the study: To what extent do prerequisite …
Interpersonal (Re)Relating: Investigating The Experience Of Refriending, Paul Edgerton Stafford
Interpersonal (Re)Relating: Investigating The Experience Of Refriending, Paul Edgerton Stafford
Dissertations
This study reveals findings from qualitative research investigating the relational experience of friends reconnecting after a long period of disconnect. Borrowed from the lexicon of social networking terminology, this particular process is conceptualized here as a process of refriending: when two individuals whose interactive behavior and shared lived experiences that once characterized their friendship have reestablished contact and are interacting after an extended period of communication dormancy. A content analysis of 15 participant interviews about their refriending experiences resulted in a typology of 12 thematic categories related to identity, disclosure, motivation, and communication competence. Aspects of relational continuity as well …

Investigating The Function Of The Mold Specific Gene M46, In The Pathogenic Dimorphic Fungus Histoplasma Capsulatum, Davida Lashaundra Crossley
Dissertations
Histoplasma capsulatum (Hc) is a dimorphic fungus that is the etiologic agent for the respiratory infection histoplasmosis. The fungus is found in the environment in contaminated soils of birds and bat excreta as a multi-cellular saprophytic mold. Once the soil is disturbed, spores are released and are inhaled into the lungs. In the lungs, the fungus converts to uni-cellular parasitic yeast (Maresca & Kobayashi, 1989). The conversion from mold to yeast is a requirement for pathogenesis. Previously, several mold specific genes have been isolated by our laboratory from a subtracted cDNA library. One such gene, is M46. M46 is a …

In 2008, a large southeastern school district was awarded an $8.5 million Safe School/Healthy Students (1999) federal grant. The grant, titled Success for All Students (SFAS) (2008) was a collaborative effort between the school district and county commissioners with the shared goal of increasing student achievement and healthy development by providing and sustaining family, school and community prevention and intervention programs. One of the services provided by the SFAS program was the addition of a truancy intervention panel (TIP) in the 35 district schools receiving services.
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a TIP on …
The Effects Of Race And Gender On The Satisfaction Levels Of Entering And Advanced Level Doctoral Students, Tiffany Nicole Labon
The Effects Of Race And Gender On The Satisfaction Levels Of Entering And Advanced Level Doctoral Students, Tiffany Nicole Labon
Dissertations
Doctoral education is an aspect of higher education that can be both rewarding and challenging for anyone who attempts the journey. Thelin (2004) stated many graduate students obtain the necessary skills that their individual fields of study require in their master’s and doctoral programs of study. Levine (2005), however, has found that the levels of satisfaction between what students expect and what they receive are at odds at many colleges and universities around the country. Thus, the need to assess graduate programs and services regarding satisfaction is warranted.
The purpose of this study was to compare the relationship of overall …

Evaluation Of Human Fecal Pollution In Mississippi Coastal And Creek Waters Using Library Independent Markers, Christopher John Flood
Dissertations
The objective of this study was to determine whether statistically valid correlations could be elucidated between standard indicator bacteria (enterococci and fecal coliforms) from coastal creek and marine samples and the presence of four library independent molecular markers that are human or sewage specific. Eight hundred and nineteen samples were collected between August 2007 and July 2010 to determine enterococcal and fecal coliform counts and the presence of genetic markers for sewage indicator organisms Methanobrevibacter smithii, human specific Bacteroides sp., Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, and Fecalibacterium sp. During the course of this study environmental parameters were measured and statistically analyzed to determine …
Climate Change, Shifts In Tropical Storm Regimes And Triadica Sebifera Invasion In Coastal Mississippi, United States, Shishir Paudel
Climate Change, Shifts In Tropical Storm Regimes And Triadica Sebifera Invasion In Coastal Mississippi, United States, Shishir Paudel
Dissertations
Global climate change is predicted to affect timing and severity of disturbance events (e.g., fire, drought, hurricanes, wind storms, and inundation), but the extent of these disturbance events and their impacts on natural ecosystems may vary regionally. Rising sea level, increased frequency and intensity of tropical storms, and altered inundation regimes are likely to create changing environmental conditions in low-lying coastal ecosystems. These large scale disturbances may increase resource availability and regeneration spaces, reduce competition, and possibly increase community vulnerability to invasion. Shifting disturbance regimes and invasion together are predicted to drive long-term shifts in coastal plant community structure and …
