Blended Learning And Bottlenecks In The California State University System: An Empirical Look At The Importance Of Demographic And Performance Analytics, Maureen Augusta Guarcello

Dissertations

In Fall 2014 over 460,000 students enrolled in the 23-campus California State University system; unfortunately, more than 20,000 qualified applicants were denied admission due to capacity and budgetary constraints. In response to continued overcrowding, the Chancellor's Office and Board of Trustees are investigating "bottlenecks," defined as anything limiting students' ability to graduate in a timely manner. Blended learning, a pedagogy combining face-to-face and computer-mediated instruction, presents a potential solution to alleviate overcrowding and bottleneck problems.

In an effort to investigate the extent to which student demographics and performance analytics explain student success outcomes in a popular blended learning psychology course, …

Predictors Of Binge Eating In College Women, Emily E. Prather Aug 2015

Predictors Of Binge Eating In College Women, Emily E. Prather

Dissertations

Binge eating has received increased attention in the psychological literature, as the health consequences are becoming increasingly well known. The prevalence of subclinical binge eating (i.e., binge eating that is not associated with a diagnosable eating disorder) is elevated among college women, some of whom will go on to develop more serious problems. Thus, improved understanding of subclinical binge eating in this population can help to inform prevention and intervention strategies.

In a sample of 472 college women this study evaluated the relationships among four theoretically relevant factors hypothesized to predict binge eating: trait anger, anger suppression, impulsivity, and emotion …

Regulation Of Vancomycin Resistance And Stress Response By The Msaabcr Operon In Staphylococcus Aureus, Dhritiman Samanta

Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is the predominant cause of public health problems around the world. Vancomycin has been an important antibiotic against Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. However, Vancomycin Intermediate S. aureus (VISA) strains have been reported. These strains are characterized by thick cell walls, reduced autolytic rate, reduced PBP4 activity, and increased amount of D-Ala-D-Ala termini in the cell wall. In this study, we show that the msaABCR operon regulates vancomycin resistance in two clinical VISA strains. Deletion of the msaABCR operon in strains Mu50 and HIP6297 resulted in a significant decrease in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for vancomycin. …

Investigating How Students Communicate Tree-Thinking, Carrie Jo Boyce Aug 2015

Investigating How Students Communicate Tree-Thinking, Carrie Jo Boyce

Dissertations

Learning is often an active endeavor that requires students work at building conceptual understandings of complex topics. Personal experiences, ideas, and communication all play large roles in developing knowledge of and understanding complex topics. Sometimes these experiences can promote formation of scientifically inaccurate or incomplete ideas. Representations are tools used to help individuals understand complex topics. In biology, one way that educators help people understand evolutionary histories of organisms is by using representations called phylogenetic trees. In order to understand phylogenetics trees, individuals need to understand the conventions associated with phylogenies.

My dissertation, supported by the Tree-Thinking Representational Competence and …

A Comparative Study Of The Population Dynamics Of Four Amaranthaceae Species, Lauren Michele Schwartz Aug 2015

A Comparative Study Of The Population Dynamics Of Four Amaranthaceae Species, Lauren Michele Schwartz

Dissertations

Some of the most problematic agricultural weeds found in the Midwest United States are found in the Amaranthaceae family, such as Amaranthus palmeri and A. tuberculatus. These summer annual weeds are troublesome due to their competitive ability, high seed production, and resistance to herbicides from several modes of action which complicates management in field crops and has led to significant yield loss. Achyranthes japonica and Iresine rhizomatosa are two perennial species in the same family as A. palmeri and A. tuberculatus that occur in similar habitats as one another, but differ in invasiveness. Achyranthes japonica is a non-native, invasive species …

Evaluation Of An Abbreviated Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Intervention In A Pediatric Primary Care Setting, Colleen C. Cullinan

Dissertations

Pediatric primary care providers encounter a substantial number of behavioral health concerns during routine visits. These providers are in a unique position to screen for and identify psychosocial difficulties, offer anticipatory guidance, and provide brief mental health interventions to families. Unfortunately, many pediatricians face barriers in screening for behavioral problems and providing appropriate interventions, particularly regarding externalizing behavior problems. Providing integrated behavioral health services in the primary care setting can reduce barriers to treatment, the stigma associated with mental health settings, and the cost of services (Berkout & Gross, 2013). There is increasing interest in adapting parent training programs for …

Although carbohydrates are the most abundant molecules on Earth, our current knowledge of these fascinating natural compounds is still limited. Some aspects that are already known include the carbohydrate involvement in damaging cellular processes such as bacterial and viral infections, development of tumors, metastasis, septic shock, etc. Consequently the development of effective methods for the synthesis, isolation, analysis, and investigation of complex carbohydrates has become critical in all areas of glycoscience. Among various focus areas, stereocontrolled glycosylation has emerged as a topic of particular importance. Yet, it remains a remarkable challenge to chemists because a new chirality center is formed …

Understanding Mechanistic Details Of Neuroinflammatory Pathways Stimulated By The Alzheimer's Disease Amyloid-Beta Protein, Shana Usery Jul 2015

Understanding Mechanistic Details Of Neuroinflammatory Pathways Stimulated By The Alzheimer's Disease Amyloid-Beta Protein, Shana Usery

Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by neuroinflammation. Senile plaques composed of aggregated amyloid-β protein (Aβ) are found in AD patients’ brains. The Aβ is formed by the proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) resulting in Aβ fragments that are 39-42 amino acids in length. The two most common peptides are Aβ(1-40) and Aβ(1-42), which differ by two amino acids, isoleucine and alanine. Within the brain of AD patients, Aβ monomer self-assembles to form several aggregate morphologies, including oligomers, protofibrils, and fibrils. Activated microglial cells and associated secreted proinflammatory cytokines surround these plaques producing a localized inflammatory environment in …

Neural Correlates Of Rumination In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Before And After Cognitive Processing Therapy, Katherine Ruth Buchholz Jul 2015

Neural Correlates Of Rumination In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Before And After Cognitive Processing Therapy, Katherine Ruth Buchholz

Dissertations

The utilization of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques to examine biomarkers and neural activity patterns related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has provided a way to investigate mechanisms that underlie the development, maintenance, and recovery from PTSD. Studying the neural correlates of individual differences related to transdiagnostic factors has the potential to provide clinically relevant information beyond that of diagnostic categories. Rumination is one such factor. Rumination, defined as repetitive, negative, self-focused thinking is considered to be a transdiagnostic factor that is associated with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. In individuals with PTSD, rumination serves as a cognitive avoidance factor …

Talk And Deterrence In Drug Markets, Timothy Dickinson Jul 2015

Talk And Deterrence In Drug Markets, Timothy Dickinson

Dissertations

Despite a wealth of conceptual and empirical examinations, key processes occurring during each of the primary stages of deterrence remain poorly specified. Little is known about how potential offenders form their perceptions of rules or threats, and the relationship between these perceptions and fear has only received moderate attention. In addition, many questions remain regarding how offenders eliminate or reshape punishments after violating rules. In this dissertation I examine how various forms of talk shape these processes. More specifically, I investigate how gossip influences offenders’ perceptions of rules or threats, how humor and threats and promises moderate the fear stemming …
