Hypertension remains one of the most common yet uncontrolled chronic diseases among older adults. Medication adherence is a vital part in managing uncontrolled hypertension. The purpose of this QI project was to evaluate the effectiveness of using the teach-back method on improving anti-hypertension medication adherence of hypertensive older adult patients age 65 to 75 with at least two uncontrolled blood pressure readings during their most recent clinic visit in the past 6 months. Medication adherence was assessed using the Hill-Bone Medication Adherence Scale (HB-MAS) before and after the intervention. The purpose of this evidence-based project was to evaluate the effectiveness of music listening as an adjuvant to traditional pain management strategies to relieve postoperative pain and to assess the dosage of opioids used to help manage postoperative pain. Latina older adult women disproportionately suffer from type 2 diabetes (diabetes) and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. These disease states are associated with serious declines in health outcomes and a three-fold reduction in treatment compliance. Few studies have examined this phenomenon exclusively among Latina older adult women or have captured the impact of intersectional identity on their experiences, values or problem-solving methods related to self-management.

The purpose of this study was to examine how Latina women, 60 and over, emotionally experience both diabetes and interactions with care providers during help-seeking and care engagement.

Cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) measurements, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and preejection period (PEP), are valid and reliable indicators of children's sensitivity to stressors in their environment; however, there are few studies of RSA and PEP measures in children younger than three years of age and no known studies of children at 18-months of age. This was a cohort study of racially- and ethnically-diverse, low-income children studied from birth through five years of age. In this dissertation, I explore how crossing national borders has made me aware of the many identity borders that I have crossed as a transnational Chinese, and how I am caught up in identity politics between the “Chinese,” who do not necessarily always identify as “Chinese” in the transnational context. This study used a twin and triplet sample to investigate the influence of preschoolers’ physical activity levels and internalizing problems on subsequent health outcomes (body-mass index, internalizing behavior problems, household health behaviors) in middle childhood. The potential influence of stressors salient in childhood (household chaos, socioeconomic status, stressful life events) on the hypothesized relationship between physical activity and internalizing on health was also explored. The zero-one loss function is less sensitive to outliers than convex surrogate losses such as hinge and cross-entropy. However, as a non-convex function, it has a large number of local minima, andits undifferentiable attribute makes it impossible to use backpropagation, a method widely used in training current state-of-the-art neural networks. When zero-one loss is applied to deep neural networks, the entire training process becomes challenging.
