Exploring Home Health Nurse Decision Making: Development And Implementation Of The Visit Plan, Elliane Irani
Exploring Home Health Nurse Decision Making: Development And Implementation Of The Visit Plan, Elliane Irani
Dissertations
Demand for home health services is increasing due to the growing aging population, increasing rates of chronic conditions, and advances in health care that support the provision of many health-related services in patients' homes. Home health agencies must adapt care delivery procedures to meet the needs of diverse and complex patients in order to keep them in their homes for as long as possible. However, it is unknown how home health nurses decide on visit patterns and implement their visit plans within the dynamic and unpredictable home health setting. This qualitative descriptive study was guided by an adapted nurse decision-making …

Hotspotting In Home Health: The Impact Of Interprofessional Student-Team Home Visits On Health Outcomes Of Super-Utilizers Of The Health Care System, Jennifer T. Alderman
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of interprofessional student-team home visits on the health outcomes of super-utilizers of the health care system. The cost of health care continues to increase at an unsustainable pace. Innovative educational approaches integrated with existing models of care are an example of a potential strategy aimed at reducing costs and improving outcomes. The model implemented in this study is referred to as hotspotting, an emerging term that describes an intervention during which super-utilizers are the focus of the intervention. Teams of interprofessional health professions students performed home visits on these patients …

Latine students are underrepresented in social work education. This case study focuses on the Online Bilingual MSW (OBMSW) Program, the first bilingual (Spanish and English) and online MSW program in the mainland United States. The purpose of this study was to explore and have a greater understanding of how the OBMSW program is providing an alternative educational pathway specifically for Latine students. Purposeful sampling was used to identify seven interview participants who have had direct involvement in the creation, design, and/or implementation of the OBMSW program. A document review of program documents was also conducted. Data were analyzed using the …
The Meaning Of Life’S Broken Fragments: A Constructive Theology Of Fragmentation Grounded In Dietrich Bonhoeffer’S Theological Ethics, Meghan Toomey
The Meaning Of Life’S Broken Fragments: A Constructive Theology Of Fragmentation Grounded In Dietrich Bonhoeffer’S Theological Ethics, Meghan Toomey
Dissertations
Understood comprehensively, Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s legacy offers contemporary American Catholicism a contextual approach to theological ethics that can meaningfully inform the development of an ethics of resistance to totalitarian and pseudo-religious forces that dominate U.S. politics today. Unfortunately, Catholic scholarship on Bonhoeffer overall has failed to grasp the full scope of his work and to incorporate his biography and the historical and theological context in which he lived. This dissertation brings Bonhoeffer into dialogue with modern and postmodern American Catholic theological contexts, specifically engaging Bonhoeffer’s concept of analogia relationis, his incarnational Christocentrism, and his embrace of contextual ambiguity. This dissertation is …
In Pursuit Of Racial Equity: The Role Of Women Presidents And Senior Leadership Teams In Higher Education, Lisa Castillo Richmond
In Pursuit Of Racial Equity: The Role Of Women Presidents And Senior Leadership Teams In Higher Education, Lisa Castillo Richmond
Dissertations
Colleges and universities are of the place and time in which they exist, reflecting the prevailing racial, income, and wealth inequities across society. As a result, the history of higher education in the United States tells both a story of opportunity and advancement, as well as one of exclusion, separation, and inequality. The expansion of access over time has also been accompanied by racial and socioeconomic stratification by institution type and disparities in college completion rates (Carnevale & Strohl, 2013; Fry, 2013). Today, issues of racial and socioeconomic equity continue to pose significant barriers for students. Additionally, women remain stubbornly …
Experiences Of School Climate Among Sexual Minority Students Of Color, Brandon Westerman
Experiences Of School Climate Among Sexual Minority Students Of Color, Brandon Westerman
Dissertations
Since the 1980’s educational research regarding sexual minority students has continued to expand. Researchers have found that school climate can have a profound impact on sexual minority students’ outcomes, including their mental health and academic success. However, much of the research on the effects of school climate upon sexual minority students consists of studies that are predominantly composed of White participants, or the researchers do not address other aspects of participant identity. Based on the concept of intersectionality, it is known that an individual’s experiences are shaped by all their identities, not just a singular one. The purpose of this …
Examining How Adolescents From Underrepresented And Minoritzed Backgrounds View And Navigate Their Racial Ethnic Identity: Exploring The Impact Of Dominant Narratives And Counternarratives On Racial Ethnic Identity, Jesus Eduardo Ramos
Dissertations
This study delves into the impact of dominant narratives on the perceptions of Racial Ethnic Identity (REI) among adolescents from underrepresented, minoritized backgrounds and assesses the effects of counternarrative interventions. It explores how racially oppressive messages in education and media shape self-perception and examines the potential of counternarratives in challenging stereotypes, promoting critical thinking, and advancing social justice. Utilizing a qualitative cross-case study design, the research involved 8 participants aged 12-14 who identified as Hispanic/Latino or Black/African. Data collection methods included demographic questionnaires, semi-structured pre- and post-intervention interviews, and reflection logs. The analysis employed constant comparison techniques and data triangulation …
Identifying And Characterizing Cognitive Profiles In Midlife Females: A Latent Profile Analysis, Hannah Hagy
Identifying And Characterizing Cognitive Profiles In Midlife Females: A Latent Profile Analysis, Hannah Hagy
Dissertations
Females are at two-thirds greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) than males. Due to this notable sex difference in cognitive aging and disease burden, there has been an increased focus on understanding the critical role of the menopausal transition (decline in fertility during midlife) as it relates to cognitive functioning across midlife. Thus, the present cross-sectional study used a sample of midlife females at different stages in the menopausal transition (N=202; Age 40-60 years) as part of a larger, multimodal design study, to elucidate distinct cognitive profiles while accounting for education, which were then characterized by other demographic factors, …
Generations After Us (Undergoing Stress): An Exploration Of Interpersonal Violence And Loss On Psychosocial Functioning At The Parent, Child, And Family Level, Kaleigh Valencia Wilkins
Generations After Us (Undergoing Stress): An Exploration Of Interpersonal Violence And Loss On Psychosocial Functioning At The Parent, Child, And Family Level, Kaleigh Valencia Wilkins
Dissertations
Previous studies propose that interpersonal violence and loss, parenting, and attachment each individually contribute to child and family distress. The following studies aimed to further explore these effects across and within various generational groupings. The first study explored exposure to community violence at the parent level and at the child level in an attempt to understand how such stress impacts parents’ perceptions of family functioning in African-American and Latine families. Findings suggested that family functioning is weakened the most when both a parent and adolescent are exposed and when just a parent was exposed. The second study examined differences in …
Multiracial Congregations: Transformative Or Status Quo?, Michelle Dodson
Multiracial Congregations: Transformative Or Status Quo?, Michelle Dodson
Dissertations
This dissertation aims to begin to clarify whether Protestant, multiracial churches are in fact challenging racism and, if so, how. To this end, my study turns its attention to social engagement. What role, if any, do these churches play in their larger social contexts? Are they socially engaged in ways that challenge racial injustice? Do they foster this type of social engagement in those who attend? These are some of the questions this study begins to answer. This is an ethnographic study of four congregations in Chicago, IL. Through a careful study of each congregation’s racial discourse and their understanding …
Napping, Sleep, And Affect In Adolescents: A Daily Diary And Actigraphy Study, Elizabeth Rea
Napping, Sleep, And Affect In Adolescents: A Daily Diary And Actigraphy Study, Elizabeth Rea
Dissertations
Adolescents in the United States do not typically attain enough quality sleep at night due to a combination of biological maturation and academic and social commitments, leading to poor cognitive, mental, and physical health outcomes. Naps may compensate for inadequate sleep; however, little is known about how napping affects nocturnal sleep and mood over time among adolescents who are poor sleepers. The present study used daily diary and actigraphy data collected over 15 days in a sample of evening-chronotype, poor sleeping adolescents (n=99; Mage=15.85 (SD=0.99); 44% Male, 55% Female; 46% White, 30% Black, 12% More than one race, 8% Other, …
The Climate-Conflict Nexus: Urban Migration And Methodological Innovations, Elisa D'Amico
The Climate-Conflict Nexus: Urban Migration And Methodological Innovations, Elisa D'Amico
Dissertations
The link between climate change and conflict has become a topic of great concern in politics and academia. While existing literature has suggested a relationship between resource scarcity and conflict, innovative methods offer an opportunity to clarify causal paths. This study aims to build on the existing literature and parse integral components of the causal pathway linking climate events to conflict, with a particular focus on economic scarcity. Using a mixed-method approach, I investigate the mechanisms underlying the climate-conflict relationship through eight within-country analyses, exploring how varying levels of climate and migration contribute to conflict onset and examining other confounding …

Understanding Stress, Strengths, And Strategies To Support Immigrant Youth: A Bundled Dissertation, Sarah Jolie
Dissertations
In the study of child development and mental health of Latine and immigrant and refugee youth, it is necessary to understand their cultural experiences and stress experiences in the U.S. The present project aims to address culture, stress, and the development of internalizing outcomes among Latine, immigrant, and refugee youth across two important stages of development: middle childhood and adolescence. The first study provides a comprehensive review of Latine children’s immigration experiences, the effects of exposure to multiple stressors, cultural factors, and intervention implications. The second study provides a focused examination of the impact of two culturally relevant stressors among …
“I Really Like The Idea Of Being The Source Of Change”: The Perspectives Of Black And Latine Youth Experiencing Low Income About How Personal Change Occurs In Out-Of-School Group Programs, Kevin Miller
Dissertations
Structured out-of-school programs (OSPs) can be contexts in which youth can be producers of their own positive change (Eccles & Gootman, 2002). However, despite a considerable body of research documenting the benefits of participating in OSPs, there is a lack of knowledge about how youth of color in low-income communities define positive personal change in OSP settings. As a result, many OSPs and interventions designed for youth of color rely on adult practitioners’ or researchers’ perspectives of the change process, which may weaken program impact and fail to holistically meet youths’ developmental needs. This study uses a critical realist scientific …
A Womanist Narrative Ethics Of Survival: An Exploration In African American Meaning Making, Lashaunda Janeice Reese
A Womanist Narrative Ethics Of Survival: An Exploration In African American Meaning Making, Lashaunda Janeice Reese
Dissertations
This project creates a womanist narrative ethics of survival framework using literary analysis, sociological and theological comparisons, and reflections on moral dilemmas in fiction and history. Steeped in the African American woman’s experiential perspective, this framework provides an alternative viewpoint through which to examine and analyze ethical issues arising in the context of marginalized bodies. Integrating the Christian faith, the history of chattel slavery in the United States, and the expanding field of African American literature and literary theory, this work posits that fiction provides a rich platform to work through thick moral dilemmas, affording a concrete ethical framework to …
Asian Americans’ Experiences Of Covid-Related Discrimination: Collective Identity, Critical Consciousness, And Intergroup Solidarity, Han Na Lee
Dissertations
The outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has stirred fear and panic with a surge of anti-Asian hate in the United States. Racial discrimination was exacerbated by labeling COVID19 as “the Chinese virus” and blaming Asians and Asian Americans as the source of the virus. Within the exacerbated xenophobic and racist rhetoric since the COVID outbreak in 2019, racial discrimination was amplified towards anyone who phenotypically presented as “Asian.” It is unclear how various Asian ethnic individuals identify with their Asian American identity while experiencing the intensified discrimination. Specifically, experiencing COVID-related racism and group-based rejection may increase or decrease Asian …

Racializing Digital Campus Spaces: A Critical Phenomenological Approach To Understanding (Re)Production Of Whiteness In Digital Campus Ecology, Victoria Elizabeth Callais
Dissertations
The landscape of higher education campus environments continues to change as student populations diversify (Parsons, 2023; Renn & Reason, 2013) and campus spaces extend into the digital realm. This critical phenomenological study examined organizational features that racialize digital campus ecology by examining the phenomena of interest, racialized digital campus spaces (RDCS). Through semi-structured interviews and focus groups with undergraduate students that focused on their experiences with RDCS and semi-structured interviews with administrators that focused on the organizational infrastructure and campus digital culture, findings revealed a complex understanding of campus ecology when reflecting on issues around race. I introduce Augmented Reality …
Exploring The Incumbent Early Childhood Workforce As Teachers Who Student And Students Who Teach: A Phenomenological Study, Kate Maxine Connor
Exploring The Incumbent Early Childhood Workforce As Teachers Who Student And Students Who Teach: A Phenomenological Study, Kate Maxine Connor
Dissertations
The professionalization efforts within the early childhood workforce continue to push for current workforce members to return to college to earn associate or baccalaureate degrees. Leaders of these efforts have called for higher education institutions to be flexible and supportive. At the same time, there is little research on the experiences of teachers returning to college, particularly those attending community colleges where most early childhood higher education programs exist. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of early childhood teachers returning to school to earn their Associate of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood while working in classroom settings. …

Early Childhood Educators’ Perceptions Of How Leadership Relates To Their Workplace Well-Being, Joanna Skourletos
Dissertations
The early childhood workforce faces many unique challenges which have exacerbated educators’ already high levels of workplace stress and turnover. Despite such system-wide issues, there are many thriving early childhood programs that cultivate environments that promote positive professional well-being for early childhood educators. This mixed methods sequential explanatory study examined the experiences and elevated the voices of early childhood educators to explore their perceptions of how their administrators relate to their workplace well-being. Using an online survey and semi-structured interviews, findings indicated that teachers’ perceptions of administrators’ leadership style, trust level and congruence to ideal relate to educators’ workplace stress …
The Experience Of Pregnant Adolescents Living In A Group Home, Mary Ellen Lasala
The Experience Of Pregnant Adolescents Living In A Group Home, Mary Ellen Lasala
Dissertations
Adolescent pregnancy and parenthood have been identified as national public health problems and are topics of intense debate in the United States because of their impact on maternal and child health and on the social and economic well-being of the nation. While many types of parenting programs are available to the adolescent mother, not one approach has emerged as the most effective to decrease subsequent pregnancies and to improve mother and child health. Using Husserl's Phenomenology as a philosophical underpinning, what it means to be a pregnant adolescent living in a group home was explored.

Assessing The Role Of Psychological Self-Sufficiency And Organizational Factors In Achieving Economic Self-Sufficiency Among Low-Income Populations, Alanna Jeeyoung Shin
Assessing The Role Of Psychological Self-Sufficiency And Organizational Factors In Achieving Economic Self-Sufficiency Among Low-Income Populations, Alanna Jeeyoung Shin
Dissertations
Low-income populations in the United States face complex challenges amid persistent high levels of poverty, income inequality, and child poverty (OECD, 2023; OECD, 2024; Smeeding & Thévenot, 2016; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023b). Influenced by neoclassical economic theory and human capital theory, work-first initiatives like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) focus on fostering individual change by enhancing employable skills (Kim, 2010). These programs predominantly emphasize personal responsibility as a strategy for reducing poverty. However, multilayered barriers remain that hinder the achievement of economic self-sufficiency (Hong et al., 2014). To challenge the prevailing approach focusing on the individual level, …
Clinical Social Workers, Telemental Health And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Juli Chaffee
Clinical Social Workers, Telemental Health And The Covid-19 Pandemic, Juli Chaffee
Dissertations
As a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and due to the shelter in place order that most states required, licensed clinical social workers (CSW’s) were forced to switch from in person services to telemental health services almost overnight. Many did so without previous training, adequate technology, a confidential office, or professional support. While there is a growing body of research regarding the increased use of telemental health in the mental health field during COVID-19, there is minimal research which narrows in what it was like for the CSW’s who made this transition. The purpose of this study was to better …
Controlling The Skies: Leveraging Airspace As A Foreign Policy Tool, Samantha Costas
Controlling The Skies: Leveraging Airspace As A Foreign Policy Tool, Samantha Costas
Dissertations
Open skies and deregulated airspace facilitate the seamless global transportation of people and property across borders. The closure of airspace to a particular country negatively impacts both the sender and target. The sender faces reduced revenue from loss of overflight fees and associated airline costs, while a target must reroute, increasing travel time and fuel requirements for the flight. Despite the substantial costs involved, airspace closures still occur. Using a three-case study analysis, this dissertation explores the factors that drive a country to close its airspace, as well as those that shape a target’s behavior when confronted with a closure. …

Middle Class African Americans Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Self-Care Practices Related To Their Spirituality, Self-Efficacy, And Health Literacy, Jacqueline G. Moody
Dissertations
Diabetes mellitus continues to be one of the most commonly diagnosed medical conditions in the United States. More than 25 million children and adults are living with type 1 or type 2 DM (ADA, 2012). Even though 18 million patients have been diagnosed with diabetes, an additional 7 million are unaware they have the disease. An important factor in health outcomes for diabetes is self-care that includes proper glucose levels control. Self-care for diabetes mellitus is important to decrease an individual's risk factors. Self-care consists of the practice of activities that maturing and mature persons initiate and perform, within time …
