Understanding The Benefits Of Latino Giving Circles: An Emancipatory Research Study, Adriana Loson-Ceballos
Understanding The Benefits Of Latino Giving Circles: An Emancipatory Research Study, Adriana Loson-Ceballos
Dissertations
This dissertation shows how Latino giving circle members understand their philanthropy and how participation affects their well-being, civic engagement, and philanthropic activities by focusing on giving circles’ composition, members’ goals, and perceived benefits. I used an emancipatory research paradigm with Latino-focused critical race theory, LatCrit, to study the Latino Giving Circle Network (LGCN). A survey was used for data collection, and research platicas were employed in the survey’s analysis; both were selected and designed centering Latinos to overcome challenges in researching Latinos.
Demographic findings reveal a range of Latino experiences. Sixty-six percent reported Mexican ancestry, compared to 83% of California …
The Correlation Between Peer Support And Quality Of Life Of Nurses, Kim Diane Rose Maryniak
The Correlation Between Peer Support And Quality Of Life Of Nurses, Kim Diane Rose Maryniak
Dissertations
Nurses can experience stress and perceived traumatic events during their career. This distress in the workplace can affect the quality of life of nurses. Exposure to perceived distressing events may lead to burnout, compassion fatigue, post-traumatic stress disorder, patient errors or poor outcomes, horizontal violence or even nurses leaving the profession. Peer support is a strategy which has been explored to increase defensive lines and improve coping. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to examine if a relationship exists between the use of peer support, as conceptualized within the framework of the Neuman System Model, and the quality …

The Global Rise Of Online Devices, Cyber Crime And Cyber Defense: Enhancing Ethical Actions, Counter Measures, Cyber Strategy, And Approaches, Naresh Kshetri
Dissertations
The rise of online devices, online users, online shopping, online gaming, and online teaching has ultimately given rise to online attacks and online crimes. As cases of COVID-19 seem to increase day by day, so do online crimes and attacks (as many sectors and organizations went 100% online). Technological advancements and cyber warfare already generated many ethical issues, as internet users increasingly need ethical cyber defense strategies.
Individual internet users have challenges on their end; and on the other end, nation states (some secretly, some openly), are investing in robot weapons and autonomous weapons systems (AWS). New technologies have combined …
Qualitative Analysis Of Older Adults' Experiences With Sepsis, Rebecca D. Hancock
Qualitative Analysis Of Older Adults' Experiences With Sepsis, Rebecca D. Hancock
Dissertations
Atypical symptoms, multiple co-morbidities and a lack of public awareness make it difficult for older adults to know when to seek help for sepsis. Diagnosis delays contribute to older adults' higher sepsis mortality rates. This research describes patients' and caregivers' experiences with the symptom appraisal process, self-management strategies, provider-nurse-patient interactions, and barriers when seeking sepsis care.

Condom Use Among Urban African American Adolescent Females, Jaquetta M. Reeves
Dissertations
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are one of the most common global health problems, having a profound impact on sexual and reproductive health worldwide. The CDC estimates that approximately 20 million new infections occur each year in the U.S., and almost half of them are among adolescents age 15-24. Despite government initiatives on STI prevention programs for adolescents, there is dearth of knowledge regarding the lack of condom use among adolescent high school students, especially concerning African American females who live in urban areas.
The purpose of this research was to explore attitudes towards condoms, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control …

Exploring Health Literacy In The Acute Care Setting In A Rural Border Region, Shiloh A. Williams
Dissertations
Health literacy is important to ensuring patients have the necessary knowledge and skills needed to actively participate as a member of their own healthcare team. Patients with low health literacy are at increased risk for poor outcomes and limited participation in decisions affecting their health or treatment plan. Using the Social Ecological Model (SEM) as a framework, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between medical-surgical registered nurses, medical-surgical patients and the registered nurse's (RN) assessment of their patient's health literacy of those who live in a ruralborder region. The study's sample consisted of 84 pairs of …
The Relationship Of The Work Environment To Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue In Critical Care Nurses, Tara L. Sacco
The Relationship Of The Work Environment To Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue In Critical Care Nurses, Tara L. Sacco
Dissertations
Due to an increased demand for nurses and high attrition, a deficit of 260,000 nurses is expected by 2025. One contributing factor to the current shortage is nurses' exposure to unhealthy work environments. Nurses who work in such environments may be at higher risk for low levels of compassion satisfaction and high levels of compassion fatigue. Empirically, and when examined as separate constructs, the nurses' work environment, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue have been linked to retention. Researchers have theorized that the nurses' work environment may promote the experience of compassion fatigue, while others have indicated that the positive aspects …
How Intensive Care Unit Nurses Conceive Of Personal And Professional Risk When Exercising Clinical Autonomy, William Albert Randall
How Intensive Care Unit Nurses Conceive Of Personal And Professional Risk When Exercising Clinical Autonomy, William Albert Randall
Dissertations
Nurses are often encouraged to work to their fullest potential, including exercising clinical autonomy--a factor known to decrease morbidity and mortality. Nonetheless, nurses endure historical, societal, and professional barriers to be respected and independent. In the intensive care unit (ICU), critically ill, often unstable patients require nurses to respond quickly and adapt to each unique situation, which may mean migrating outside of formal rules, norms, and policies, or "rule-bending." However, as inherent subordinates of hospital administrators and physicians, rule-bending, no matter how well-intended, necessary, or benign, often cause nurses to function in a grey zone of vulnerability and risk.

The Impact Of Health Literacy, Culture And Psychological Factors On The Pap Testing Behaviors Of African Immigrant Women In The United States, Joycelyn Cudjoe
Dissertations
African immigrant (AI) women have low Pap testing rates. Limited health literacy is a barrier to cancer screening among racial/ethnic minority populations. Sources and types of health information can shape health literacy. However, how health literacy, sources and types of health information along with cultural and psychosocial correlates impact the Pap testing behaviors of AI women remains unknown.
To examine how sources and types of health information impact health literacy and health information exchange, and in turn, how health literacy, culture and psychosocial (cancer knowledge, self-efficacy, decisional balance, cultural beliefs) factors influence the Pap testing behaviors of AI women.

Factors And Processes That Influence E-Professionalism Among Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Students When Utilizing Social Media, Julie Skrabal
Dissertations
There is limited research related to nursing students' social media use. Because of this, there was a need to further explore how they were using social media and their ability to maintain e-professionalism. This study discovered that pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing students are actively using multiple social media accounts on a daily basis. Nursing is considered a trusted and respected profession, therefore, nursing students are held to a high professional standard. This includes maintaining privacy boundaries when managing professional and personal information during social media use.
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore the processes pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing …

Engaging Experts: Overcoming Trust In Risky Environments, Cynthia Goodwin-Sak
Dissertations
In business-to-business sales environments, sellers may choose to bring their go-to expert to a customer meeting, even when there is an expert available who may be more skilled in the product being discussed. The purpose of this study is to identify if an intervention of data, trust transference, ingroup identity, or a combination, influence the choice of expert a salesperson engages for a customer meeting. We tested this question through a series of vignettes and hierarchical linear modeling. The sample came from a US-based technology company, and salespeople in the United States.
We found that trust transference influenced both choice …

Life Histories Of Blackqueer Adults: Why And How They Support Blackqueer Youth, Javania Michelle Webb
Dissertations
To set the tone for this qualitative study and the enriched data discovered, bell hooks (2001) says, “if we love each other and embrace our diverse sexualities, we create an environment where there is no sexuality that cannot speak its name” (p. 207). This critical narrative analysis portrays the reasons why BlackQueer adults choose to mentor and embolden BlackQueer youth. Life History methodology brought their experiences to life. Lesbian, Gay, and Gender Nonconforming (LGGNC) youth learn to conceal certain attributes associated with being Queer. They are compelled to consider and give context to their family, K-12 school personnel, and community …

Dissertations
Since the release of the Missouri Model for Trauma-Informed Schools approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in 2019, school leaders were given the opportunity to start the process of meeting the emotional and fundamental needs of students. With the effects of trauma reaching all diverse groups of race, gender, economic status, and community surroundings, there is an increased need to use the education system to reach students emotionally. Though the model is a blueprint for schools, school districts are not required to adopt this model and implement it within their districts. Due to the recent pandemic, …
Testing Barriers To Non-Suicidal Self-Injury With College Students: Narcissistic Traits As Moderators, Philip Stoner
Testing Barriers To Non-Suicidal Self-Injury With College Students: Narcissistic Traits As Moderators, Philip Stoner
Dissertations
Research on non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has produced mixed findings, resulting in a lack of clarity regarding these behaviors (Klonsky & Meuhlenkamp, 2007). To address this, Hooley and Franklin (2018) developed the Benefits and Barriers Model (BBM) to provide a comprehensive understanding of NSSI, in which they identified the barriers that commonly prevent people from engaging in these behaviors (e.g., self-esteem, shame, and peer-bonding motivations/social norms). They also identified adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as a distal predictor of NSSI, which aids people in overcoming the barriers to engaging in these behaviors. Recent NSSI literature has shown that college women in the …
