The Effects Of Foreign Aid On Government Policies: Theoretical And Empirical Analyses, Hyeon Joon Shin Aug 2014

The Effects Of Foreign Aid On Government Policies: Theoretical And Empirical Analyses, Hyeon Joon Shin

Dissertations

Chapter 1 develops a two-period general equilibrium trade-theoretic model to examine if foreign aid discourages the recipient countries from pursuing trade liberalization. In the model, foreign aid is given to the recipient in period two and its amount is negatively related to the period-one real income. The recipient optimally chooses a tariff on imports. It can also choose domestic investment endogenously in period one, and this choice has an important bearing on our main result. We consider two variants of the model depending upon whether the recipient can or cannot have access to international borrowing. In the case without international …

On Motion Mechanisms Of Freight Train Suspension Systems, Dennis O'Connor Aug 2014

On Motion Mechanisms Of Freight Train Suspension Systems, Dennis O'Connor

Dissertations

In this dissertation, a freight train suspension system is presented for all possible types of motion. The suspension system experiences impacts and friction between wedges and bolster. The impacts cause the chatter motions between wedges and bolster, and the friction will cause the stick and non-stick motions between wedges and bolster. Due to the wedge effect, the suspension system may become stuck and not move, which cause the suspension lose functions. To discuss such phenomena in the freight train suspension systems, the theory of discontinuous dynamical systems is used, and the motion mechanism of impacting chatter with stick and stuck …

An Analysis Of The Educational Experiences Of African American Male Prison Inmates Enrolled In A Voluntary College Vocational Program: Variables That Encourage Or Preclude Postsecondary Degree Attainment, Kenton Rondelle Mershon

Dissertations

There are approximately one-third more African American men who are incarcerated than those who are enrolled in postsecondary education. While in prison, African American male inmates are exposed to a variety of experiences such as mental illness and depression. Despite their impaired judgment and reasoning skills, there are some African American male prison inmates who have an avid interest in obtaining an education and completing a college program while incarcerated. Therefore, I documented their experiences in their college vocational programs. The value of a college education in prison is significant for inmate development. It affords inmates the opportunity and ability …

Design And Synthesis Of Chelating Compounds And Solid-Supported Chelators For Metal Depleted Solutions, Surendra Dawadi Jul 2014

Design And Synthesis Of Chelating Compounds And Solid-Supported Chelators For Metal Depleted Solutions, Surendra Dawadi

Dissertations

Metals are essential to life, yet they can be toxic for biological systems when present in excessive amounts. The major source of metal overload in humans is diet; and in some cases, intravenous feeding. Thus the removal of toxic metal ions from contaminated clinical products such as total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions, and drinking and waste water is extremely important. The use of chelating resins, which are polymeric solids containing covalently immobilized chelating compounds, for the selective removal of metal ions from contaminated solutions has been conceptualized long ago. Herein, the design and synthesis of metal specific chelating compounds and …

Chemistry And Thermochemistry Of Selected Fatty Acids Using Correlation Gas Chromatography, Joe A. Wilson Jul 2014

Chemistry And Thermochemistry Of Selected Fatty Acids Using Correlation Gas Chromatography, Joe A. Wilson

Dissertations

Correlation gas chromatography (c-GC) is a special application of the gas chromatography technique and is used for the evaluation of both vaporization enthalpy and vapor pressures of organic compounds. Its use in measuring vaporization enthalpies has been extensively documented. This method is useful for measurements of both liquids and solids. For substances that are solids, since each analyte is dilutely adsorbed on the condensed phase of the gas chromatographic column, it is not crystalline. The vapor pressure that it exhibits behaves as an excellent model of the sub-cooled liquid as demonstrated by various thermochemical cycles. Thermochemical measurements are important to …

Nanoporous Gold Characterization, Structural Modification And Use As A Solid Support For Biomolecule Immobilization, Abeera Sharma Jul 2014

Nanoporous Gold Characterization, Structural Modification And Use As A Solid Support For Biomolecule Immobilization, Abeera Sharma

Dissertations

Nanoporous gold (NPG) has immense technological applications owing to a plethora of properties like large surface area to volume ratio, plasmonic properties, stable gold-thiolate bond formation and a wide range of pore sizes. The surface morphology of nanoporous gold has been altered previously by dealloying and thermal annealing to increase/decrease the pore size and change the surface area. We provide a novel electrochemical annealing technique for post dealloying modification wherein electrochemical sweep cycles in different electrolytes at positive potentials leads to a subsequent increase in pore sizes of nanoporous gold as studied using scanning electron microscopy. Tailoring the surface of …

Takt Time Grouping: A Method To Implement Kanban-Flow Manufacturing In An Unbalanced Process With Moving Constraints, Mitchell Alan Millstein Jul 2014

Takt Time Grouping: A Method To Implement Kanban-Flow Manufacturing In An Unbalanced Process With Moving Constraints, Mitchell Alan Millstein

Dissertations

One-piece flow and kanban/pull methods have been used to reduce WIP and speed flowtime in manufacturing flow processes; however, these methods have limitations. For example, one-piece flow does not work well when there are relatively large set-up times required between different components. One-piece flow also requires operations to be well-balanced. Unfortunately, these conditions often do not exist. The Theory of Constraints drum-buffer-rope (DBR) method is designed for unbalanced processes, and it has been shown to be effective for products with large operation time variation. However, DBR does not generally optimize flowtime and cannot handle a process with moving constraints (bottlenecks). …

The Connection To Improved Student Performance For Teacher Experience And Advanced Degree Completion Above Bachelor’S Level, Jared Flay Terry

Dissertations

Educational leaders and experts claim that teachers are the number one classroom factor in the educational success of students (Marzano, 2007; Wong, 2009). This study determined there was not a significant correlation between the two teacher characteristics of advanced degree completion and years of experience. These are two of the more quantifiable and highly regarded teacher characteristics in the profession. The typical teacher salary is a major component of education that places high value on these two characteristics. There are many other policies and legislation, such as the No Child Left Behind Act, teacher tenure, hiring practices, and staff reduction …

A Method For Assessing And Describing The Informal Inferential Reasoning Of Middle School Students, Joshua Michael Goss Jun 2014

A Method For Assessing And Describing The Informal Inferential Reasoning Of Middle School Students, Joshua Michael Goss

Dissertations

Informal Inferential Reasoning (IIR) has emerged in the last decade in the study of statistics education. Developing students’ IIR ability is seen as a way of preparing students for the important topic of Formal Statistical Inference (FSI); however, research is still needed in order to investigate how students transition between informal and formal statistical reasoning. A primary difficulty is that we do not have a way of assessing and describing students’ IIR ability levels. In order to address this, an Assessment of Informal Inferential Reasoning (AIIR) was developed, along with a Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes (SOLO) taxonomy (Biggs & …

Integrating Nanotechnology Into The Undergraduate Chemistry Curriculum: The Impact On Students’ Affective Domain, Jacinta M. Mutambuki

Dissertations

High attrition rates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) continue to be documented in the undergraduate education in the United States (U.S.). There is a growing concern that the U.S. will fall short of 3 million graduates by 2018. Furthermore, the literature indicates that about 36% of 4-year college graduates lack adequate critical thinking skills, complex reasoning, and communication skills relevant to the current job market. Reasons for these observations relate to the overemphasis on content knowledge; lack of content relevance; lack of interest in STEM courses; and dominance of expository teaching methods in classrooms. Given its relevance in …

Conceptual Framework Alignment Between Primary Literature And Education In Animal Behaviour, Andrea Marie-Kryger Bierema Jun 2014

Conceptual Framework Alignment Between Primary Literature And Education In Animal Behaviour, Andrea Marie-Kryger Bierema

Dissertations

In 1963, Tinbergen revolutionized the study of animal behaviour in his paper On aims and methods of ethology (Zeitschrift Tierpsycholgie, 20, 410-433) by revamping the conceptual framework of the discipline. His framework suggests an integration of four questions: causation, ontogeny, survival value, and evolution. The National Research Council Committee (U.S.) on Undergraduate Biology Education to Prepare Research Scientists for the 21st Century published BIO2010: Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists (Washington, DC: The National Academies Press, 2003), which suggests alignment between current research and undergraduate education. Unfortunately, alignment has been rarely studied in college biology, especially for fundamental …

Using Case Method To Explicitly Teach Formative Assessment In Preservice Teacher Science Education, Amy Elizabeth Bentz

Dissertations

The process of formative assessment improves student understanding; however, the topic of formative assessment in preservice education has been severely neglected. Since a major goal of teacher education is to create reflective teaching professionals, preservice teachers should be provided an opportunity to critically reflect on the use of formative assessment in the classroom. Case method is an instructional methodology that allows learners to engage in and reflect on real-world situations. Case based pedagogy can play an important role in enhancing preservice teachers’ ability to reflect on teaching and learning by encouraging alternative ways of thinking about assessment.

Although the literature …

Biophysical Characterization Of The First Four Metal-Binding Domains Of Human Wilson Disease Protein, Alia V.H. Hinz Jun 2014

Biophysical Characterization Of The First Four Metal-Binding Domains Of Human Wilson Disease Protein, Alia V.H. Hinz

Dissertations

Wilson disease protein (WLNP) is a P1b-type ATPase crucial for maintaining copper homeostasis in humans. Mutations in this protein result in the autosomal recessive disorder Wilson disease, a condition characterized by copper accumulation in the liver and brain. WLNP provides copper for incorporation into cuproproteins and exports excess copper into the bile for excretion. There are six metal-binding domains (MBDs) in WLNP, found within the first 650 amino acids of this 1,465 amino acid protein. Though each MBD has a different amino acid sequence, all MBDs possess a similar ferredoxin fold with a conserved hydrophobic core and a …

The Control Of The False Discovery Rate Under Structured Hypotheses, Gavin Lynch May 2014

The Control Of The False Discovery Rate Under Structured Hypotheses, Gavin Lynch

Dissertations

The hypotheses in many multiple testing problems often have some inherent structure based on prior information such as Gene Ontology in gene expression data. However, few false discovery rate (FDR) controlling procedures take advantage of this inherent structure. In this dissertation, we develop FDR controlling methods which exploit the structural information of the hypotheses.

First, we study the fixed sequence structure where the testing order of the hypotheses has been pre-specified. We are motivated to study this structure since it is the most basic of structures, yet, it has been largely ignored in the literature on large scale multiple testing. …

Electro-Deformation Of A Moving Boundary: A Drop Interface And A Lipid Bilayer Membrane, Herve Nganguia May 2014

Electro-Deformation Of A Moving Boundary: A Drop Interface And A Lipid Bilayer Membrane, Herve Nganguia

Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the deformation of a viscous drop and a vesicle immersed in a (leaky) dielectric fluid under an electric field. A number of mathematical tools, both analytical and numerical, are developed for these investigations. The dissertation is divided into three parts. First, a large-deformation model is developed to capture the equilibrium deformation of a viscous spheroidal drop covered with non-diffusing insoluble surfactant under a uniform direct current (DC) electric field. The large- deformation model predicts the dependence of equilibrium spheroidal drop shape on the permittivity ratio, conductivity ratio, surfactant coverage, and the elasticity number. Results from the …
