Like-Doublet Injectors : The Effects Of Varying The Impingement Distance And An Analysis Of The Primary Atomization Zone, Brian A. Sweeney

Dissertations

This research explored how the jet breakup length to impingement distance ratio affects the spray characteristics of like-doublet injectors and consisted of cold-flow experiments using water at atmospheric pressure. A combination of three impingement angles, four jet velocities, and four jet breakup length to impingement distance ratios between one-half and two were tested. The breakup characteristics, sheet lengths and ligament wavelengths were determined from high-speed videos of the spray while droplet statistics were collected with a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer. The sheet breakup characteristics were altered when the ratio transitioned from greater than one to equal to one and dramatically …

Robust Support Media For High Throughput Chromatographic Separations, Javier Sanchez Santiago Jan 2016

Robust Support Media For High Throughput Chromatographic Separations, Javier Sanchez Santiago

Dissertations

Affinity chromatography is used to separate biomolecules based on highly specific interactions, such as receptor and ligand, enzyme and substrate or antigen and antibody. Traditional chromatographic separation systems have the disadvantages of low flowrates, high pressure drop across the column, low capacity and poor reusability. Ceramic monoliths have been previously used as active support for affinity chromatographic columns due to their compact geometry and outstanding mechanical properties. In addition, mathematical models have been developed in order to determine the adsorption and elution times depending on the monolith geometry. The reversible interaction between L-asparagine and L-asparaginase has been exploited, using a …

Pickup Ion Production In The Global Heliosphere And Heliosheath, Yihong Wu Jan 2016

Pickup Ion Production In The Global Heliosphere And Heliosheath, Yihong Wu

Dissertations

Pickup ions (PUIs) play a significant part in mediating the solar wind (SW) interaction with the interstellar medium. In this dissertation, I examine the details of spatial variation of the PUI velocity distribution function (VDF) in the SW by solving the PUI transport equation. I assume the PUI distribution is isotropic resulting from strong pitch-angle scattering by wave-particle interation. I take into account the effects of convection with the SW, adiabatic cooling, second-order Fermi process and production of PUIs. I analyze how PUIs transform across the heliospheric termination shock (TS) and obtain the PUI phase space distribution in the inner …

Transformative Models In K-12 Education: The Impact Of A Blended Universal Design For Learning Intervention, Kai Monet Mathews Jan 2016

Transformative Models In K-12 Education: The Impact Of A Blended Universal Design For Learning Intervention, Kai Monet Mathews

Dissertations

Accountability measures, by way of standardized curriculum and assessments, have played a large part in the attempt to ensure that students from all backgrounds receive equal access to quality education. However, the inherent disadvantage of a standardized system is the implied assumption that all students come in with the same knowledge, learn at the same pace, and learn the same way. In the wake of an increasingly diverse K-12 population, educational researchers, learning theorists, and practitioners agree that the concept of the average student is, in fact, a myth. Students come to school with different needs, norms, interests, cultural behavior, …

Exploring The Intersection Of Fat+Wom*N+Leadership: An Action Research Study, Jessica Jamese Williams Jan 2016

Exploring The Intersection Of Fat+Wom*N+Leadership: An Action Research Study, Jessica Jamese Williams

Dissertations

Cultural propaganda promotes an ever-changing feminine ideal which is parasitically reliant on women preoccupying themselves—ourselves—with our physical aesthetic. For women that identify as fat, most spaces openly neglect or are simply intolerant of her and even the stores meant for her are riddled with products meant to bind, reshape and essentially change her body. Fat women embody the paradox of being both conspicuous and unseen. Within systems, fat women are often silenced by shame, bias and discrimination; the unwanted and soiled identity hold us at the margins and serving as a barrier to effectively connect with others and practice leadership. …

Parental Involvement, Socio-Economic Status And Students' Perceptions Of The Classroom Learning Environmnet As Predictors Of 8th Grade Students Academic Achievement: A Structural Equation Model, Allyson Blandin Jan 2016

Parental Involvement, Socio-Economic Status And Students' Perceptions Of The Classroom Learning Environmnet As Predictors Of 8th Grade Students Academic Achievement: A Structural Equation Model, Allyson Blandin

Dissertations

Problem

Academic achievement among the nation’s youth has been on the decline for decades. The statistics from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) paints a bleak picture of the academic performance of more than half of the 4th and 8th grade students being below the required levels of proficiency in reading and mathematics. This is evidence that a problem of low academic achievement exists among certain student groups within the public education system. Therefore, it creates an academic achievement gap, which is reflected in the disparity in the standardized scores between students of color from low socio-economic status with …

Using Tops For Identification Of Gifted Hispanic Students, Barbara Martin

Dissertations

USING TOPS FOR IDENTIFICATION OF GIFTED HISPANIC STUDENTS

Researchers have noted an underrepresentation of Hispanic ELL students in gifted education. A literature review revealed several problems encountered when assessing and identifying gifted Hispanics and have also suggested a variety of solutions including use of non-standardized alternative assessments. In this project, the researcher explored the attitudes of educators regarding the addition of a non-standardized tool. The TOPS is a non-standardized tool used to systematically gather and document qualitative observational data within the context of instruction (Harradine, Coleman, & Winn, 2014). The researcher used both a survey questionnaire and a semi-structured interview …

This study investigated ways to support young children’s STEM learning and ability to generalize their knowledge across informal learning experiences. Participants were 128 parents and their 4- to 8-year-old children (Mage = 6.63, SD = 1.38). Families were randomly assigned to receive engineering instructions, transfer instructions, both engineering and transfer instructions, or neither. They were then observed working together to solve an engineering problem, and immediately afterward, the children were invited to solve a second engineering problem on their own. Families who received engineering instructions – either alone or in combination with the transfer instructions - were more successful at …

Design And Analysis Of Biased Run-Length Coding Methods And Their Applications In Lossless Compression Of Bi-Level Roi Maps In Hyperspectral Images, Amir Leon Liaghati Jan 2016

Design And Analysis Of Biased Run-Length Coding Methods And Their Applications In Lossless Compression Of Bi-Level Roi Maps In Hyperspectral Images, Amir Leon Liaghati

Dissertations

This work addresses efficient lossless compression of binary images. To this end, we designed several novel compression techniques, including one method known as the biased run-Length coding method. In this method, we first partition a binary image into equally sized blocks. We then convert the binary pixels within each block into a block symbol. In contrast to conventional approaches where all symbols are run-length coded, our method run-length codes only the most probable block symbols, followed by Huffman coding on the run-lengths. The other less probable block symbols will be coded with a separate Huffman code. Tests on NASA's AVIRIS …

Material Sections And Natural Fragmentation Size Distributions In Heterogenous Shells, Justin Christopher Sweitzer Jan 2016

Material Sections And Natural Fragmentation Size Distributions In Heterogenous Shells, Justin Christopher Sweitzer

Dissertations

The dynamic fragmentation of shell cases has historically been treated with mixed physical and statistical models that have been applied with varying degrees of success. Mott developed the most commonly used physics-based model of fragmentation in the 1930’s. Mott also developed an unrelated, but more pervasive statistical distribution function. In this work, basic concepts of these analyses are extended to account for fracture energy and applied to the explosive fragmentation of shell elements and to the impact fragmentation of solid plates. An energy-based distribution function is developed and validated against experiment, and conclusions are drawn regarding the efficacy of the …

The Relationship Between Leaders' Emotional Intelligence And Employees' Organizational Citizenship Behavior And Job-Related Affective Well-Being At Andrews University, Robert L. Overstreet

Dissertations

Problem

Research has been conducted linking high levels of Emotional Intelligence (EI) in leaders with organizational success. However, the link between leaders’ EI levels and workplace climate (as evidenced by employees’ Job-related Affective Well-being [JAW] and Organizational Citizenship Behavior [OCB] levels) has not been adequately understood. This study sought to improve the understanding of how employee affective well-being and citizenship behaviors are related to leaders’ EI, with additional consideration given to how the gender of those leaders may affect that relationship.

Method

A quantitative correlational research method has been chosen as an appropriate method for the research study in which …

Atomic Oxygen Adsorption And Absorption On Rh(111) And Ag(111), Jonathan Derouin Jan 2016

Atomic Oxygen Adsorption And Absorption On Rh(111) And Ag(111), Jonathan Derouin

Dissertations

A central question in the field of heterogeneous catalysis is how surface structure and subsurface species influence catalytic behavior. One key to answering that question is determining which surface structures and subsurface species are present under catalytically relevant conditions. This dissertation presents results of Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, temperature programmed desorption, and scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on oxidized Rh(111) and Ag(111) crystals. Exposing Rh(111) to O2 produced a predominately (2 × 1) adlayer, but even after extended dosing, (2 × 2) domains were also present. Exposing Rh(111) to atomic oxygen yielded O coverages greater than 0.5 ML …

Emature: Intergenerational Networks In Digital Media Spaces, Andras Lukacs Jan 2016

Emature: Intergenerational Networks In Digital Media Spaces, Andras Lukacs

Dissertations

While the literature on adolescent usage of the Internet and mobile communication technology is burgeoning, the technological affordance of increased intergenerational contacts and intergenerational friendships received less attention. This project documents how intergenerational virtual networks operate in one particular massively multiplayer online game (World of Warcraft) from the standpoint of adolescent players. Online social worlds are similar to offline settings in a lot of ways. Users must obey certain behavioral standards and follow established rules and moral codes to participate. Despite accounts of online democracy and networked individualism, control and authority is central to the functioning of these environments. Power-relationships …

Performance Of Individuals And Teams On Cryptographic Tasks: Factors That Affect The Consideration Of Alternative Strategies, Joseph Bihary Jan 2016

Performance Of Individuals And Teams On Cryptographic Tasks: Factors That Affect The Consideration Of Alternative Strategies, Joseph Bihary

Dissertations

The two studies presented here examined factors that might affect teams’ and individuals’ tendency to follow outside advice when attempting to solve a complex problem known as letters-to-numbers. Past research on group dynamics suggests that a lack of group consensus or homogeneity reduces group members’ confidence in their group’s abilities, and may lead members both to seek and accept advice from outside the group. Study 1 experimentally manipulated group diversity in task performance strategies in order to investigate whether dyads whose members have divergent perspectives are more likely than homogeneous dyads to consider and use a problem-solving strategy presented from …

Development Of Folate Directed, Protein Based Photodynamic Therapy Agents, Rojenia Jones Jan 2016

Development Of Folate Directed, Protein Based Photodynamic Therapy Agents, Rojenia Jones

Dissertations

To attack cancer cells in a specific manner, we have developed a folate-targeted, photodynamic therapy (PDT) agent. The folate (FA) and the chlorin e6 (Ce6) photosensitizer were attached to bovine serum albumin (BSA) using carbodiimide chemistry. Since over 50% of cancers overexpress folate receptors, FA-BSA-Ce6 can be taken up by them and is an effective PDT agent. Hela cells exposed to FA-BSA-Ce6 in the dark showed no cytotoxicity. Upon exposure to light, the conjugate was dose (time and concentration) dependent. Concentrations less than or equal to 2 µM were not effective at killing Hela cells but concentrations of at 5 …

Missing Data In The Context Of Student Growth, Katherine Wright Jan 2016

Missing Data In The Context Of Student Growth, Katherine Wright

Dissertations

One property of student growth data that is often overlooked despite widespread prevalence is incomplete or missing observations. As students migrate in and out of school districts, opt out of standardized testing, or are absent on test days, there are many reasons student records are fractured. Missing data in growth models can bias model estimates and growth inferences. This study presents empirical explorations of how well missing data methodologies recover attributes of would-be complete student data used for teacher evaluation. Missing data methods are compared in the context of a Student Growth Percentiles (SGP) model used by several school systems …

Habermas And Public Reason In The Digital Age: Technology And Deliberative Democracy, Asaf Bar-Tura Jan 2016

Habermas And Public Reason In The Digital Age: Technology And Deliberative Democracy, Asaf Bar-Tura

Dissertations

Scholars defending the deliberative model of democracy have focused much of their attention on argumentation and criteria for offering public reasons in deliberative processes, but have paid little attention to the ways in which digital technologies mediate such deliberations. Conversely, critical theorists of technology have emphasized the socially determined nature of technology, but have lacked a theory of democracy through which to normatively assess technologies that mediate public discourse. Through a reworking of Jürgen Habermas’s discourse-based theory of democracy, my research provides a new understanding of the flows of political communication and power in the democratic public sphere and the …
