Encouraging Activism In Secondary English: Reading And Writing For Social Justice, Elisabeth Spinner
Encouraging Activism In Secondary English: Reading And Writing For Social Justice, Elisabeth Spinner
Dissertations
This dissertation presents researched backed, social justice oriented teaching strategies secondary English teachers can implement to encourage their students to think critically and take action on issues that matter to them. Foundational to this research is critical inquiry which encourages students to not read or listen to information passively, but rather to investigate, critique, explore, and ask questions of what they are reading. This approach is necessary when encouraging students to dispel myths and stereotypes, understand questions of rights and justice, and find the right way to be involved. The English classroom is an ideal place for students to do …
Silenced In History: A Historical Study Of Mary Seacole, Bonnie M. Harmer
Silenced In History: A Historical Study Of Mary Seacole, Bonnie M. Harmer
Dissertations
This study sought to uncover the factors that contributed to the historical disappearance of Mary Seacole from the literature from 1900 through to the 1980s. By the late 1990s she was celebrated as a nursing pioneer and the first nurse practitioner. Seacole, a Creole woman from Jamaica with outstanding clinical skills, was refused the opportunity to join the nurses who Nightingale recruited for the Crimean War campaign. Undaunted by the rejection, Seacole paid for her own voyage and established a boarding house and clinic near the front lines. Her courage and positive patient outcomes were recognized by the military officers. …
An Analysis Of Success Center Directors’ Perceptions Concerning College Remedial Education Programs, Melvin Steele Jr.
An Analysis Of Success Center Directors’ Perceptions Concerning College Remedial Education Programs, Melvin Steele Jr.
Dissertations
Success Centers are a component of community colleges that prepare students who need additional foundational coursework to proceed to college-level credit classes (Housel, 2020). In this study, the perceptions of Success Center Directors concerning their programs were explored through the lens of adult learning theory as advanced by Knowles and Lindeman (Merriam, 2018) using an online survey. Five research questions were investigated, which dealt with the services provided by Success Centers at community colleges, services that directors wanted to add, the credentials of those working in Success Centers, the impact of Success Centers on their stakeholders, and contingency plans used …
Indicators Of Typology In The Narrative Of Elijah: An Investigation Into The Predictive Nature Of Biblical Theology, JôNatas De Mattos Leal
Indicators Of Typology In The Narrative Of Elijah: An Investigation Into The Predictive Nature Of Biblical Theology, JôNatas De Mattos Leal
Dissertations
Elijah is among the most popular prophets in the Judeo-Christian tradition. In Judaism, the hope for his return has evolved into a plethora of legends in which he functions as a helper to the righteous in the present and avenger to the wicked in the future eschaton. In Christianity, the expectation involving his return has also a multitemporal dimension, but its fulfilment is typologically oriented. More often, scholars study the fulfilment of the Elijah typology from the NT perspective in a backward movement. This dissertation investigates this typology in a forward movement going from the OT to the NT while …
The Case For Alternate Media Requirement Expressions In Systems Engineering, Jason Kolligs
The Case For Alternate Media Requirement Expressions In Systems Engineering, Jason Kolligs
Dissertations
“Requirements” are often presented as a necessary, if not mandated, component or tool of the systems engineering process. Despite their place in engineering, low quality requirements are the first potential mistakes of an engineering project and their effects are potentially felt downstream in the form of increased costs and schedule overruns. Innovations to improve requirements engineering have historically omitted the requirement media. This research provides the rationale and process heuristics to include alternate media requirement expressions within systems engineering which shifts accountability to higher context requirement expressions that may require less cognitive load while decreasing effort and schedule thereby potentially …
Isaac Newton As A Prophetic Interpreter, Kenneth Jørgensen
Isaac Newton As A Prophetic Interpreter, Kenneth Jørgensen
Dissertations
Throughout his life, Sir Isaac Newton was deeply dedicated to the science of decoding biblical apocalyptic writings. To understand and appreciate Newton's prophetic scheme, it will be advantagous to have a certain grasp of what sources and ideas might have influenced him. No comprehensive study before this one has helped us see Newton from that perspective. A survey of the development of canonical apocalyptic hermeneutic and interpretation, beginning before the time of Christ and ending with Newton, shows that four distinct systems of hermeneutics had developed by that time. Historicism was the earliest and the preferred system among Protestants until …
Vigilance Experiences: Cancer Patients, Families, And Nurses, Wendy C. Kooken
Vigilance Experiences: Cancer Patients, Families, And Nurses, Wendy C. Kooken
Dissertations
Cancer disease, treatment, and errors in health care put patients at increased risk for poor outcomes. To improve outcomes and protect patients, researchers recommend increased vigilance; yet, research on vigilance in health care is minimal. There are even fewer studies on patients, family members, and nurses' experiences of vigilance, although such studies could contribute to understanding mechanisms that foster vigilance within and across groups.
The purpose of this study was twofold: Aim 1 was to describe the experiences of vigilance as perceived at the individual levels of patients receiving treatment for cancer, family members of a patient with cancer, and …

A Mixed-Methods Investigation Of First-Year Learning Communities In A Private, Midwestern University, Elaine M. Ragland
Dissertations
In the 2017-2018 academic year, the School of Humanities of a private, Midwestern university began a pilot program of two first-year learning communities in the Fall, with an additional learning community in the Spring. Each learning community consisted of three theme-linked courses, for a total of nine courses over two semesters. As the study unfolded, the first and the third of the learning communities lived up to expectations of the faculty and administrators as communities of increased engagement and academic success. The second community struggled with engagement and both students and faculty felt that their theme-linked group failed to demonstrate …
Comprimario Tenor Repertoire: An Alternative Approach To Teaching The Developing Operatic Tenor, Stewart Cramer
Comprimario Tenor Repertoire: An Alternative Approach To Teaching The Developing Operatic Tenor, Stewart Cramer
Dissertations
Not every tenor is destined to sing romantic leading roles. Fortunately, the expansive body of secondary tenor repertoire is just as exciting. Not only are these roles a possible avenue for a successful career, they also offer a wealth of technical resources for young, developing tenors and their teachers. When diving into the wide-ranging and diverse world of the comprimario tenor, there are more than just Parpignols and Armoured Men; there are Frantzes, Witches, and Hylases. Each character demands unique technical, musical, emotional, and acting skills. This paper examines the pedagogical relevance of the comprimario tenor repertoire in the voice …

Promoting Prep Uptake In Primary Care Practice For The Prevention Of Hiv Transmissions, Sokonie S. Reed
Dissertations
The nation is charged with the great task of eradicating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by year 2030. PrEP is an acronym for pre-exposure prophylaxis. Multiple clinical trials have recognized it as a safe and highly effective regimen that includes taking a daily dose of an antiretroviral medication to prevent HIV transmissions. The regimen is backed by prominent healthcare organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that have developed guidelines for PrEP implementation. Yet, there is a nationwide problem of low provider uptake of PrEP. Investigators in the literature on PrEP implementation concur that PrEP, as a preventative …
Mental Health Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Older Adults, Elizabeth Kerr
Mental Health Effects Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Older Adults, Elizabeth Kerr
Dissertations
Problem: Significant psychological effects such as anxiety, depression, stress, and loneliness are shown to affect the older adult population, aged 65 years and older. The social isolation and disconnectedness related to the COVID-19 pandemic potentially worsens anxious and depressive feelings, increasing the risk for adverse outcomes in the high-risk older adult population. This project aimed to identify older adults at risk for acute, situational mental health issues associated with the pandemic.
Methods: A descriptive study design was used. Telephone interviews were conducted to explore effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health responses in older adults. A convenience sample …

The Political Economy Of American Militarism: The Military- Industrial Complex, Power Elite, And The 2003 Invasion Of Iraq, Randy S. La Prairie
The Political Economy Of American Militarism: The Military- Industrial Complex, Power Elite, And The 2003 Invasion Of Iraq, Randy S. La Prairie
Dissertations
Sociologists have paid little attention to the structural causes of American participation in wars. Consequently, the discipline offers few theoretical perspectives on American war making. Sociological theories that do exist fall under two headings: state-centric and Marxist theories. Both lack prima facie plausibility. In this dissertation, I advance a unique, alternative theoretical framework that I argue offers a more tenable theory of American militarism in the post-World War II period. The elite model of war mobilization, as I refer to it, consists of five interrelated structural causes of American participation in wars: (1) state-capitalist imperialism; (2) elite control of public …
Reframing National Women's History Month: Practicalities And Consequences, Skylar Bre’Z
Reframing National Women's History Month: Practicalities And Consequences, Skylar Bre’Z
Dissertations
This study evaluates the practicalities and consequences of designating one month (March) out of the calendar year for the commemoration of women’s history. In the 1970s and 1980s, national women’s organizations such as the Women’s Action Alliance (WAA) collaborated with the Smithsonian Institute and the Women’s History Program at Sarah Lawrence College to build programs to increase awareness of women’s history. Using an interdisciplinary approach grounded in feminist theory, media studies, and historical memory studies, this project contextualizes the commemoration through its connection to 1970s women’s activism, explores its usefulness as a tool for building educational equity, and questions its …
Reams, Radicals And Revolutionaries: The 'Illinois Staats-Zeitung' And The German-American Milieu In Chicago, 1847-1877, Sebastian Peter Wuepper
Reams, Radicals And Revolutionaries: The 'Illinois Staats-Zeitung' And The German-American Milieu In Chicago, 1847-1877, Sebastian Peter Wuepper
Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes how a large, German-language newspaper, the Illinois Staats-Zeitung served the German-American immigrant community in Chicago in the second half of the nineteenth century. The German diaspora in the United States was not a secluded, separated, and isolated entity, but a node in a transnational network of cultural exchange that crossed national and natural boundaries. Newspapers contributed significantly to the creation and maintenance of this cultural sphere. The editors of the Staats-Zeitung were refugees of the failed 1848 democratic revolutions in Germany. In Germany they had been academics, intellectuals, lawyers and journalists. They brought their political convictions with …
Military Life Narratives And Identity Development Among Black Post-9/11 Veterans, Deon Marcell Hall
Military Life Narratives And Identity Development Among Black Post-9/11 Veterans, Deon Marcell Hall
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomenological experience of veteran identity development in post-9/11 veterans who identify within the Black diaspora. Given that current research suggests that behavioral health providers lack the sufficient training necessary to meet the unique clinical needs of post-9/11 veterans, this study aimed to examine military culture and experience in the context of intersecting cultural identities so as to more effectively frame the services offered by counseling psychologists working with Black military veterans and service members. More specifically, this study strengthens the existing empirical framework for addressing the behavioral health needs of post-9/11 …

The Role Of Professional Nursing In The Origin Of The Newborns' And Mothers' Health Protection Act Of 1996 From A Feminist Perspective, 1981-1996, Jan-Louise Leonard
Dissertations
This social historiography tells the story of the origin of the Newborns' and Mothers' Health Protection Act of 1996. In the 1980s when the federal government reduced allocations to states' Medicaid programs as a cost saving measure, hospitals, initiated early discharge of patients to save costs. Given four million births annually, childbirth is the most frequent reason for hospitalization in the United States. Hospitals discharged Medicaid insured mothers and newborns very early at twenty-four hours for a normal birth and seventy-two hours for a cesarean. Other insurers adopted similar managed care strategies in the early 1990s. By 1995, unionized nurses …

Acuity-Based Staffing In Long Term Care: Does It Influence Quality?, Kathy Diane Gray-Siracusa
Acuity-Based Staffing In Long Term Care: Does It Influence Quality?, Kathy Diane Gray-Siracusa
Dissertations
Long-term care settings have frequently been targeted as environments prone to deficiencies in quality and resultant negative effects on resident safety. The use of minimum nurse staffing ratios has been proposed as a way to improve the quality of care for long-term care residents. However, the American Nursing Association has criticized the appropriateness of ratios for the determination of staffing needs. A more appropriate staffing methodology is one that is based on a measure of intensity that takes into consideration the aggregate population of patients and the associated roles and responsibilities of the nursing staff. The purpose of this study …
Making A Way Out Of No Way: A Phenomenological Study Of Black Maternal Activism In Chicago, Deidra Somerville
Making A Way Out Of No Way: A Phenomenological Study Of Black Maternal Activism In Chicago, Deidra Somerville
Dissertations
To date, the lived experiences of Black maternal activists in North Lawndale have not been documented, even with the critical role many played while organizing with Dr. Martin Luther King as part of the Chicago Freedom Movement and the critical role of the Illinois Black Panther Party to the Black Power Movement (Seligman, 2005; Rice, 2003). With no studies of the lived experiences of Black maternal activists in North Lawndale, the theories of bridge leadership, tempered radicalism and their application to those lived experiences is not known. By examining the relationships and organizations influencing black maternal activism, this study aims …

The Nature Of David's Kingship At Hebron: An Exegetical And Theological Study Of 2 Samuel 2:1-5:5, Christian Vogel
The Nature Of David's Kingship At Hebron: An Exegetical And Theological Study Of 2 Samuel 2:1-5:5, Christian Vogel
Dissertations
The account of David’s reign at Hebron found in 2 Samuel 2:1—5:5 constitutes a somewhat neglected, yet crucial part of the David narrative, chronicling David’s first years as king. This dissertation investigates these chapters by means of a close reading of the Hebrew text in order to gain a better understanding of the nature of David’s kingship as it is presented in this literary unit. The review of scholarly literature on 2 Samuel 2:1—5:5 conducted in Chapter 1 reveals that not much attention has been given to a careful and in-depth exegesis of this literary unit. Instead, most of the …
Constructing A Theology Of Relational Life Through The Themes Of Creation, Incarnation, And Re-Creation As An Alternative To Current Categories Of Religions, Andrew Tompkins
Dissertations
This dissertation argues that current categories of religions are overly reliant on Western Enlightenment-based presuppositions and academic thinking that creates barriers in understanding God’s desire for all people to have abundant life. Many theologians and missiologists utilize these inherited categories without first subjecting them to the biblical canon. As a result, the theological and missiological discourse on religions is often grounded in extra-biblical presuppositions rooted primarily in an overly high view of human reason that do not accurately portray a biblical approach to relational life. These presuppositions do not accurately portray a biblical approach to relational life. I, therefore, compared …
Islam, Christianity, Traditional Religions And Power Politics In Northern Nigeria Since Pre-Islamic Period, Emmanuel M. Abar
Islam, Christianity, Traditional Religions And Power Politics In Northern Nigeria Since Pre-Islamic Period, Emmanuel M. Abar
Dissertations
Problem
Currently in Northern Nigeria, religious interaction among the three major religious traditions, Islam, Christianity, and African Traditional Religion, is marred by violent religious conflicts. Also, competing concepts of religious legitimacy, which appeal to the historical heritage of Nigeria, are often used to validate and justify the violation of religious freedom. Does the current state of religious interaction among the various religious groups reflect the true heritage of religious interaction in Northern Nigeria? Or is it possible that the history of the interaction between African Traditional Religions, Islam, and Christianity in the past might actually be a heritage that points …
Exhibiting Sovereignty: Tribal Museums In The Great Lakes Region, 1969-2010, Meagan Mcchesney
Exhibiting Sovereignty: Tribal Museums In The Great Lakes Region, 1969-2010, Meagan Mcchesney
Dissertations
This dissertation argues that the foundation and development of tribal museums in the Great Lakes region is a form of activism -- a deliberate action performed for the purpose of inciting positive political, social, cultural, and/or economic change -- and that the functions of tribal museums enable Native activism to continue and evolve to reflect and address new historical understandings and contemporary circumstances. I argue that in the Great Lakes region, Native activism continued beyond the highly publicized movement of the 1960s and 70s, and manifested in ways suited to address regionally and tribally-based needs. Control over interpretations of the …
