The review of literature explores the historical context of education in the United States and increasingly focuses on the new national Common Core State Standards and their implementation in small school districts.
The Delphi study uses the participants’ opinions to identify CCSS implementation strategies and related …
Studies On Purification And Functionalization Of Carbon Nanotubes And Their Aqueous Phase Behavior, Zheqiong Wu
Studies On Purification And Functionalization Of Carbon Nanotubes And Their Aqueous Phase Behavior, Zheqiong Wu
Dissertations
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are known to have unique mechanical, thermal and electrical properties which make them attractive for a wide range of applications ranging from batteries to sensors. CNTs are rolled up graphene sheets where the single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) and multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) are classified according to the number of concentric rings. In this dissertation, the focus is on several different aspects of MWCNTs. These include purification, functionalization and colloidal behavior.
MWCNTs are insoluble in solvents and therefore some degree of functionalization is required prior to their real-world applications. Oxidation debris is generated during carboxylation which is usually the first …
A Novel Approach To User Controlled Ambulation Of Lower Extremity Exoskeletons Using Admittance Control Paradigm, Kiran Kartika Karunakaran
A Novel Approach To User Controlled Ambulation Of Lower Extremity Exoskeletons Using Admittance Control Paradigm, Kiran Kartika Karunakaran
Dissertations
The robotic lower extremity exoskeletons address the ambulatory problems confronting individuals with paraplegia. Paraplegia due to spinal cord injury (SCI) can cause motor deficit to the lower extremities leading to inability to walk. Though wheelchairs provide mobility to the user, they do not provide support to all activities of everyday living to individuals with paraplegia.
Current research is addressing the issue of ambulation through the use of wearable exoskeletons that are pre-programmed. There are currently four exoskeletons in the U.S. market: Ekso, Rewalk, REX and Indego. All of the currently available exoskeletons have 2 active Degrees of Freedom (DOF) except …
Mediating Chance Encounters Through Opportunistic Social Matching, Julia M. Mayer
Mediating Chance Encounters Through Opportunistic Social Matching, Julia M. Mayer
Dissertations
Chance encounters, the unintended meeting between people unfamiliar with each other, serve as an important social lubricant helping people to create new social ties, such as making new friends or finding an activity, study or collaboration partner. Unfortunately, social barriers often prevent chance encounters in environments where people do not know each other and people have to rely on serendipity to meet or be introduced to interesting people around them. Little is known about the underlying dynamics of chance encounters and how systems could utilize contextual data to mediate chance encounters. This dissertation addresses this gap in research literature by …
Collaborative Development Of A Small Business Emergency Planning Model, Arthur Henry Hendela
Collaborative Development Of A Small Business Emergency Planning Model, Arthur Henry Hendela
Dissertations
Small businesses, which are defined by the US Small Business Administration as entities with less than 500 employees, suffer interruptions from diverse risks such as financial events, legal situations, or severe storms exemplified by Hurricane Sandy. Proper preparations can help lessen the length of the interruption and put employees and owners back to work. Large corporations generally have large budgets available for planning, business continuity, and disaster recovery. Small businesses must decide which risks are the most important and how best to mitigate those risks using minimal resources.
This research uses a series of surveys followed by mathematical modeling to …
Custom Engineered Nanomaterials For Energetics And Energy Applications, Ani Abraham
Custom Engineered Nanomaterials For Energetics And Energy Applications, Ani Abraham
Dissertations
Recent interest in reactive material has shifted to more custom formulations targeting specific applications. In this work, preparation and characterization of nanomaterials used for several energetics and energy applications are addressed.
The main challenge of this effort is to design and prepare nanomaterials which have significant improvements associated with combustion dynamics, reaction rates, sensitivity, biocidal effectiveness, moisture stability, and are environmentally safer over the existing energetics. Nanomaterials that are used to defeat stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, modify ionosphere properties for transmission of optical and radio signals, and for energy storage are prepared under room or cryogenic temperatures via …

The Lived Experience Of Urban Plus-Sized Black Women In A Midwestern City, Jolene Johnson Lynn
The Lived Experience Of Urban Plus-Sized Black Women In A Midwestern City, Jolene Johnson Lynn
Dissertations
ABSTRACT Obesity among adults in the United States is a significant problem of growing proportions. Black women have a higher rate of obesity than other women but there is a paucity of research about the experiences and perspectives of plus-sized Black women. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the experience of plus-sized Black women living in an urban area. Ten participants were interviewed guided by open-ended interview questions. All interviews were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Colaizzi’s (1978) phenomenological method was used to identify themes within the data. Data analysis resulted in three themes: the meaning of plus-size, …
An Exploration Of The Relationship Between The Partisan-Business Cycle And Economic Inequality Within Developed Economies, Richard O'Doherty
An Exploration Of The Relationship Between The Partisan-Business Cycle And Economic Inequality Within Developed Economies, Richard O'Doherty
Dissertations
Recent contributions to the study of inequality have provided strong evidence towards the presence of an established trend, over several decades, of growing economic inequality (with a particular focus on distribution within their tails; i.e. top 10%, 1%) across countries with developed economies and indications of similar trends across developing economies. While the causality and influencing factors to these trends has widely been discussed, and has range from declining domestic growth rates as economies move towards high mass consumption states to globalisation, political decision making and policy application been referred to as both contributory or an instrument for dampening such …
The Impact Of A Supportive Feedback Environment On Attitudinal And Performance Outcomes, Amanda Lee Blinebry
The Impact Of A Supportive Feedback Environment On Attitudinal And Performance Outcomes, Amanda Lee Blinebry
Dissertations
While the positive outcomes of feedback in the workplace have been supported in previous research, there is still a lack of theoretical unity explaining how and why feedback may be advantageous. In addition, previous studies examining the effects of feedback have resulted in mixed findings. Two studies were conducted to clarify the conditions for valuable feedback by proposing and empirically testing two models examining relationships between feedback environments and outcomes. The first study examined performance outcomes related to a supportive feedback environment while the second study examined attitudinal outcomes associated with a supportive feedback environment. Results of both studies indicate …
Caffeine Combined With Sedative/Anesthetic Drugs Used In Neonatal Medicine And Apoptotic Neurotoxicity In Developing Mouse Brain, Omar Hosea Cabrera
Caffeine Combined With Sedative/Anesthetic Drugs Used In Neonatal Medicine And Apoptotic Neurotoxicity In Developing Mouse Brain, Omar Hosea Cabrera
Dissertations
Each year, millions of premature babies are exposed to sedative/anesthetic drugs (SADs) in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Acute exposure to SADs triggers widespread apoptosis in the developing brain of rodents and non-human primates. Furthermore, premature infants are administered caffeine (CAF) to treat respiratory dysfunction. Mounting evidence suggests that CAF may be neurotoxic and, when given in combination with SADs, potentiates SAD-induced cell death. However, the apoptotic interaction of CAF and SAD co-exposure is poorly understood. In a series of studies, I report that CAF combined with the NICU SADs midazolam, ketamine, or fentanyl is more neurotoxic to the …
Substance Use Behaviors Of College Students: Differences By Living Arrangement, Marcus B. Long
Substance Use Behaviors Of College Students: Differences By Living Arrangement, Marcus B. Long
Dissertations
Traditional-age college students are continuing to live with their parents at higher percentages than at any time during recent history. However, little research has been conducted during the last 15 years on multiple substance use behaviors of this population and how those behaviors compare to traditional-age students who live in residence halls on campuses. The purpose of this study is to better understand the differences in alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana usage behaviors of traditional-age students who live with their parents and those who live in residence halls, as well as how those behaviors change as students age in both environments. Using …
The Role Of Money And Endorsements In Same-Sex Marriage Ballot Initiatives, Jessica Lorraine Loyet Gracey
The Role Of Money And Endorsements In Same-Sex Marriage Ballot Initiatives, Jessica Lorraine Loyet Gracey
Dissertations
This research examines how well certain theories of direct democracy explain outcomes of ballot measures on gay marriage bans. Most theories of direct democracy focus on the types of issues that are quite dissimilar from gay marriage bans. Therefore these theories will likely not do a good job of explaining the results of these elections. In particular I examine the role of campaign spending and elite endorsements in campaigns for gay marriage ban ballot initiatives. In candidate elections, voters commonly use heuristics such as party labels and past performance to help them decide. In most ballot initiative contests voters rely …

Children Who Are Deaf Deserve Researched Based Education, Cheryl Ann Hermann
Children Who Are Deaf Deserve Researched Based Education, Cheryl Ann Hermann
Dissertations
Deaf Education includes many complex components, including: 1) Academics, 2) Cognitive, 3) Hearing, 4) Speech, 5) Language: American Sign Language and English, 6) Social Skills & Emotional Well Being, 7) Deaf Culture, and 8) Instructional Methods. Evidence indicates that children who are deaf achieve academically at the same levels as their peers, “Postsecondary enrollment and degree completion by deaf individuals in colleges, universities, and career and technical education schools have increased dramatically over the past several decades,” (Marc Marschark, 2015, p. 5). However, most of the current research shows that despite numerous interventions and philosophies, children who are deaf continue …
School Based Mental Health As It Relates To Student Outcomes, Kathleen Kelly Vierod
School Based Mental Health As It Relates To Student Outcomes, Kathleen Kelly Vierod
Dissertations
Over twenty percent of youth have a major mental illness, yet only approximately one third of these children receive treatment. Many students struggle with social emotional learning deficits, mental health concerns, chronic poverty and trauma, which significantly impacts their ability to learn. These concerns affect academic achievement as demonstrated by lower graduation rates, higher suspension rates, higher absenteeism, and lower grade point averages. School-based mental health practices are a proactive measure to improve student outcomes for all students. The Every Student Succeeds Act provides increased opportunity for schools to implement evidence-based programs to address these concerns.

Trends In Mathematics Enrollment And Achievement Gap In St. Louis Area Public High Schools, 2000 - 2014., Victoria V. Shearing
Dissertations
Long before the “No Child Left Behind”, Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, or Brown vs. Board of Education, students of color have dreamed and struggled for equity in education. The issue of equal access to high quality of education highlighted in the NCLB focused public attention on the racial achievement gap. The present study examined mathematics enrollment and achievement trends among St. Louis area public high school students from 2000 to 2014 The study compared the results among racial groups and by gender rather than using a traditional Black-White comparison. Several frameworks contributed to the development of the …
Elevating Teacher Quality: Teacher Tenure Reform Applying Lessons From Other Fields, Kevin M. Martin
Elevating Teacher Quality: Teacher Tenure Reform Applying Lessons From Other Fields, Kevin M. Martin
Dissertations
The increased pressure of changing how teacher evaluations are conducted and increasing the level of teacher quality are pushing schools to reform. Due to changes in state mandates and federal laws, schools are required to demonstrate teacher effectiveness and student growth in teacher evaluations to assure students are receiving top quality education. Some districts in the state of Missouri have begun to reform their process to address 21st century teaching approaches and strategies. While examining and applying lessons from civil service and institutions of higher learning, aspects of tenure and post-tenure review can be applied to public k-12 school districts …
Missouri's Missing Education Policy: Support Systems For Districts With High Student Mobility Rates, Mary Lee Hardy
Missouri's Missing Education Policy: Support Systems For Districts With High Student Mobility Rates, Mary Lee Hardy
Dissertations
Missing in Missouri is state policy defining student mobility or how to measure it consistently across all districts. High mobility disproportionately impacts schools with a high poverty rate which creates a need for policy centered on this topic. Evidence indicates that children who change to a new school after the start of the regular school term negatively impacts not only that child, but the school district, teachers and staff, as well as the current students. Typically, these children arrive two to three years behind grade level academically and have social concerns. In order to best serve these students, districts need …
Race, Neighborhood Context, And Drug Enforcement: A Mixed-Method Analysis Of Racial Disparities In Drug Arrests, Shytierra Gaston
Race, Neighborhood Context, And Drug Enforcement: A Mixed-Method Analysis Of Racial Disparities In Drug Arrests, Shytierra Gaston
Dissertations
Black-white racial disparities in drug arrests are large and longstanding in the U.S. criminal justice system, as black Americans are arrested for drug offenses at a rate nearly five times the rate of white Americans. Because drug offending data mostly show that blacks are no more likely than whites to use or sell drugs, racial disparities in drug arrests appear to be attributable to factors other than drug offending. This dissertation assesses whether neighborhood contextual factors can explain racial disparities in drug arrests across St. Louis neighborhoods between 2009 and 2013. Using mixed methods, the quantitative and qualitative components test …
Expanding Coercive Mobility Theory: Women's Forms Of Capital And Neighborhood Social Control, Jaclyn Marie Cwick
Expanding Coercive Mobility Theory: Women's Forms Of Capital And Neighborhood Social Control, Jaclyn Marie Cwick
Dissertations
This dissertation proposes a gendered theory of coercive mobility, synthesized from the collateral consequences of incarceration, along with coercive mobility theory and literature on forms of capital. Previous work has shown that the removal of residents due to mass incarceration contributes to disruptions in neighboring relationships and therefore, impedes the community’s ability to prevent crime, commonly referred to as informal social control. This involuntary mobility due to prison admissions and returns, known as coercive mobility, has focused almost entirely on the collateral consequences to the incarcerated, a predominantly male population. However, those who remain in the community, primarily women, also …
Effects Of Blood Pressure On Brain Microstructure And Cognition In Healthy Older Adults, Sarah Ann Cooley
Effects Of Blood Pressure On Brain Microstructure And Cognition In Healthy Older Adults, Sarah Ann Cooley
Dissertations
Hypertension represents one of the major modifiable health concerns in the U.S., with over one-third of adults classified as hypertensive, and another one-third meeting the classification for pre-hypertensive. Older adults are at the highest risk for hypertension. Although results have been mixed, a majority of the literature suggests that hypertension is associated with increased cognitive decline in older adults, particularly in frontally-mediated cognition such as executive functioning, processing speed, and attention. White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) and altered white matter microstructure are two consequences of hypertension that are thought to mediate the relationship between hypertension and cognitive aging. The goals of …
The Paradox Of Impoverished Missouri Schools: The School Districts In Missouri That Need More Often Get Less, William John Armon
The Paradox Of Impoverished Missouri Schools: The School Districts In Missouri That Need More Often Get Less, William John Armon
Dissertations
Most states in the United States guarantee all citizens the right to an adequate education. Missouri passed SB 287 in 2004 with this exact purpose in mind. The bill was designed to ensure that students in high-poverty districts receive a greater share of funds from the state to offset shortfalls in local revenue. The new funding formula has certainly created great disparity in the amounts of state funds various districts receive. In addition, the formula recognizes the financial need of districts that have a high percentage of students living in poverty. Despite this recognition, adequacy has not been achieved for …
Optimizing Workforce Performance: Perceived Differences Of Army Officer Critical Thinking Talent Across Level Of Education, Richard B. Ayers
Optimizing Workforce Performance: Perceived Differences Of Army Officer Critical Thinking Talent Across Level Of Education, Richard B. Ayers
Dissertations
The U.S. Army’s operating environment continues to become increasingly complex and unpredictable, where U.S. technological advantage continues to erode. The complexities stem from the Army’s doctrinal assumption that the future operating environment is unknown and constantly changing (Department of the Army [DA], 2014a). Diminishing technological advantage results in more reliance on soldiers’ cognitive capability, and less on high technology weapons systems (McMaster, 2015).
A review of military literature shows extensive research on the importance of Army leaders to be talented critical thinkers (Fischer, Spiker, & Riedel, 2008, 2009; Gerras, 2008; Thomas & Gentzler, 2013). Human capital literature reveals many college …
An Investigation Of Work Environment Characteristics And Work Engagement Of Limited- And Full-Service Hotel Property Front-Line Employees, Robert Jerald Thompson
An Investigation Of Work Environment Characteristics And Work Engagement Of Limited- And Full-Service Hotel Property Front-Line Employees, Robert Jerald Thompson
Dissertations
Today, employee work engagement is viewed as one of the most important issues for corporations, given its influence on individual and organizational productivity and performance (Attridge, 2009; Czarnowsky, 2008). As a result, all organizations desire employees who are engaged, in particular the hospitality industry. As a service-providing sector of the hospitality industry, hotels are reliant on front-line employees to conduct strong customer-employee interactions and provide efficient service delivery while exceeding customer expectations (Kusluvan, 2003). The hospitality industry needs employees who are committed to the organization and one who is passionate, striving to go the extra mile, and offering discretionary effort …
Fifth Grade Teachers’ Knowledge About Reading Instruction And Its Effects On Classroom Literacy Practices And Reading Achievement, Susan M. Dirnbeck
Fifth Grade Teachers’ Knowledge About Reading Instruction And Its Effects On Classroom Literacy Practices And Reading Achievement, Susan M. Dirnbeck
Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to discover the effectiveness of then-current teaching practices in fifth grade classrooms and to determine whether any of the strategies or practices observed yielded higher student achievement results than others. The researcher observed and recorded evidence of the use of the most effective practices, as identified by the Writing and Reading Observation Tool (WROT). Teachers’ scores obtained on the WROT were compared to the percentage of students reading at a proficient level, as measured by the Scholastic Reading Assessment. If high scores on the WROT indicated the use of effective teaching practices, then …
Family Communication Motivating Athletics Over Generations: A Mixed Method Expansion Of Self-Determination Theory, Elizabeth Hanson Smith
Family Communication Motivating Athletics Over Generations: A Mixed Method Expansion Of Self-Determination Theory, Elizabeth Hanson Smith
Dissertations
Mixed methods were utilized to test the communication within a model of self-determination (Deci & Ryan, 1985) in a multi-generational sports framework in order to argue for an update to self-determination theory (SDT) that includes a communication element. Fourteen qualitative research questions were posed to examine how communication functioned to move tennis players, golfers, and runners from the initial family influence in participating, to integrating family values to the extent that participants modeled athletic values to offspring and community members. Three hypotheses correlating the variables of self-efficacy, autonomy-controlling and autonomy-supportive family communication supported the argument that communication functioned to develop …

The sample consisted of 152 direct care employees that work with individuals with disabilities at rehabilitation organizations in the state of Illinois. In particular, the focus was on determining the best fit model that predicts turnover intent among quality of LMX, dyadic age, gender, educational level, ethnicity and duration and their two-way interactions with LMX. Participants were asked to complete the team Leader-Member Exchange scale (LMX-SLX), Turnover Intent Scale (TIS) and a demographic questionnaire. Results …
Women's Textile Graffiti: An Aesthetic Staging Of Public/Private Dichotomies, Diana Christine Woodhouse
Women's Textile Graffiti: An Aesthetic Staging Of Public/Private Dichotomies, Diana Christine Woodhouse
Dissertations
The cultural performance of textile graffiti, or yarnbombing, dramatizes women’s contested relationship to the public/privates dichotomies that constitute neoliberal capitalism as well as liberal democracies. Across both of these institutions, privatized matters are problematically excluded from political consideration, and private sphere values—such are nurturance, interdependence, and communalism—are denied their necessity and legitimacy as public goods. Textile graffiti artists furnish an association between public and private life by placing signifiers of domesticity and caregiving onto the public streets, and adorning those nurturant signifiers with political and/or feminist messages. In so doing, textile graffiti functions to politicize caregiving, to highlight its gendered …
