Leaky Pipeline And Sacrificial Lambs: Gender, Political Parties, And Descriptive And Substantive Representation Of Women In South Korea, 1988 – 2016, Young-Im Lee
Dissertations
This study examines women’s political representation in pre-election (candidate nomination), election, and post-election (legislative activities) stages in South Korea. First, I examined factors contributing to electing women to the National Assembly in the eight national legislative elections since democratization in 1987. I conducted statistical analysis to examine how a candidate’s political experience, major party nomination, incumbency, and districts’ party loyalty affect the candidate’s electoral victory and how each influences women and men differently. I also interviewed candidates, candidate aspirants, elected legislators, legislative staffers, scholars and activists on their personal experiences with major party nomination and election campaigns.
Second, I analyzed …

What’S In It For Me? The Impact To Social Exchange Dynamics Of Hispanic Males Serving As Mentors In Formal Youth Programs, Annica Meza Dawe
Dissertations
Purpose: The U.S. Hispanic population is on the rise and will continue to be an important thread in the fabric of American society as a whole. However, in the midst of this burgeoning group lies its male subpopulation which faces its own unique challenges. One outlet that has demonstrated success for minorities is mentoring. Mentoring can provide Hispanic males with numerous benefits in a social exchange paradigm. Unfortunately the majority of mentoring research has focused solely on the perspective of the protégé, thus leaving mentor perceptions, particularly those of Hispanic males, unexplored. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study sought …

Parasitism Of Free-Ranging Neotropical Primates: Examining Parasite-Host And Parasite-Parasite Relationships, Gideon A. Erkenswick
Dissertations
Parasites are infectious agents that require resources from host organisms to complete all or part of their lifecycles. It is customary for wild animals to acquire and maintain multiple parasitic infections during their lifetime. The effects of parasites on hosts vary across demographic and environmental variables, and in relation to each other. Moreover, the propensity for a host animal to acquire an infection can be influenced by other host species in the area that are susceptible to the same parasites. This dissertation describes and explores the natural parasite assemblage of a free-ranging community of nonhuman primates in the Peruvian Amazon …

Towards An Informatics Competent Nursing Profession: Validation Of The Self-Assessment Of Nursing Informatics Competency Scale (Sanics) Before And After Online Informatics Training, Judi Allyn Godsey
Dissertations
Nurses should be involved in healthcare initiatives that incorporate informatics as an essential tool for improving health outcomes (IOM, 2010). However, nurses frequently report lack of competency to perform the most basic computer functions, outside of those required within their work environment (Hwang, 2011). Without educational or training interventions, nurses are limited in their ability to effectively use information technology in practice (Greiner, 2003). This study explored the psychometric performance of the Self-Assessment of Nursing Informatics Competencies Scale (SANICS) when used to measure informatics competency in a population of entry-level nursing students.

Supervised Release Sentences Of Child Pornography Offenders In U.S. District Courts: An Examination Of Disparity, Niquita Marie Loftis
Supervised Release Sentences Of Child Pornography Offenders In U.S. District Courts: An Examination Of Disparity, Niquita Marie Loftis
Dissertations
The statutory supervised release sentencing range for child pornography offenders convicted in U.S. District Courts is five years to life. However, the guideline policy statement contained in the Federal Sentencing Guidelines recommends lifetime supervision for all child pornography offenders. U.S. Sentencing Commission (USSC) data for fiscal year 2012 indicate that only approximately 33% of child pornography offenders were sentenced to lifetime supervision. This variation suggests the possibility of unwarranted supervised release sentencing disparities. The dissertation explores this possibility by examining the effects of individual-level legal and extralegal factors and district-level contextual factors on supervised release sentences for child pornography offenders. …
Increasing Resilience In Adolescent Nursing Students, Teresa Maggard Stephens
Increasing Resilience In Adolescent Nursing Students, Teresa Maggard Stephens
Dissertations
Nursing students not only face the same developmental challenges as other college students, but also experience unique stressors that contribute to increased risk for negative outcomes. The intimate nature of patient care, the exposure to workplace adversity, death and dying, and the chaotic nature of healthcare can have cumulative negative effects on students' health and well-being. Increased resilience could prove useful in helping students confidently face challenges and successfully move forward. The lack of empirical evidence regarding resilience-enhancing interventions with nursing students supports the need for examining the effectiveness of an educational intervention to increase resilience in adolescent baccalaureate nursing …

Biophysical Studies Of Hairpin Polyamides With Broad-Spectrum Activity Against High-Risk Human Papillomaviruses, Carlos H. Castaneda
Dissertations
Human papillomavirus is a small dsDNA virus that infects mucosal and cutaneous epithelial tissues. Persistent infection with high-risk HPV is the main etiological agent in the development of cervical cancer worldwide. Although prophylactic vaccines against HPV are available, these preventative measures are type-specific and are ineffective against existing infections. Thus, there is a pressing need for antiviral drugs with a broad-spectrum activity against HPV to eradicate existing infections, no matter the subtype.
Our group and collaborators have synthesized an extensive library of novel N-methylpyrrole/N-methylimidazole (Py/Im) hairpin polyamides (PAs) with broad-spectrum activities against three prevalent oncogenic-HPV types (HPV16, …

Right Hemisphere Capacities For Word-Finding: Bilateral Modulation Of Event-Related Potentials In Healthy Adults And Adults With Aphasia, Amanda C. Alton
Right Hemisphere Capacities For Word-Finding: Bilateral Modulation Of Event-Related Potentials In Healthy Adults And Adults With Aphasia, Amanda C. Alton
Dissertations
Language tasks are typically lateralized to the language dominant left hemisphere in healthy right-handed adults. Additionally, lesions in left frontotemporal areas typically result in a variety of language impairments called aphasia. Interestingly, increased activation in right cerebral regions homologous to left side lesions has been observed in patients with aphasia during word-finding tasks. The neural mechanism and the impact on word-finding remain unclear. There are two competing theories concerning compensatory right hemisphere activation. One view is that the right hemisphere plays a supportive role, taking over functions of the damaged left hemisphere. The other perspective is that rightward laterality is …

I Warned You! Applicant Reactions To Different Types Of Warnings Against Faking On Personality Tests: An Organizational Justice, Trust And Affect-Based Perspective, Vanessa M. Lammers
Dissertations
Abstract
Despite their widespread use in employee selection procedures, personality measures are susceptible to applicant faking. Explicit warnings, often included in test instructions to deter faking behavior, inform applicants that items are included on the test to detect faking, and that those caught faking, will be removed from the applicant pool (i.e., invalidation warnings). The current research examined the effectiveness of another warning type informing applicants that faking is not in their best interest, as it is likely to get them into a job for which they are a poor fit (i.e., job fit warnings). Results for Study 1 supported …
