Development Of Innate Immunity During In Vitro Differentiation Of Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells, William D'Angelo
Development Of Innate Immunity During In Vitro Differentiation Of Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells, William D'Angelo
Dissertations
Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) hold enormous promise for the goals of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, and extraordinary progress has been made in defining conditions for differentiation to desired cell types. However, an often overlooked aspect of ESC biology is innate immunity, the ability of cells to detect and respond to pathogens and inflammatory cytokines. A number of recent studies by our lab and others have established that ESCs and other types of pluripotent cells from both mice and humans do not mount typical immune responses to viral or bacterial stimuli. There are also indications that various cell types differentiated …

Race, Socioeconomic Status, And Implicit Bias: Implications For Closing The Achievement Gap, Elizabeth Schlosser
Dissertations
This study accessed the relationship between race, socioeconomic status, age and the race implicit bias held by middle and high school science teachers in Mobile and Baldwin County Public School Systems. Seventy-nine participants were administered the race Implicit Association Test (race IAT), created by Greenwald, A. G., Nosek, B. A., & Banaji, M. R., (2003) and a demographic survey. Quantitative analysis using analysis of variances, ANOVA and t-tests were used in this study. An ANOVA was performed comparing the race IAT scores of African American science teachers and their Caucasian counterparts. A statically significant difference was found (F = …
Advocacy For Compliance With Existing Policy In Social Emotional Learning, Emilie Correa
Advocacy For Compliance With Existing Policy In Social Emotional Learning, Emilie Correa
Dissertations
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) standards were adopted by the state of Illinois in 2004. Local SEL policy was adopted by District 1234 in 2010. This policy advocacy work presents how findings from a district’s SEL Audit helped a team of administrators identify areas for growth and advocate for compliance of existing state and local SEL policy. This work documents how a district went from no SEL programming, to the creation of an SEL Task Force, the powering of SEL standards, and the planning for systemic implementation of SEL. According to research (Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor, & Schellinger, 2011), students who …

Addressing The Assessment Of Professionalism In Physical Education Teacher Education: A Multi-Case Study Of Nationally Accredited Programs, Brandy Michelle Lynch
Dissertations
Many nationwide reform efforts in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) have revolved around the development of the National Standards for PETE, which outline essential knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of successful physical educators (Metzler & Tjeerdsma, 2000a). With the inclusion of Standard Six in the 3rd edition of the Initial PETE Standards (National Association of Sport & Physical Education [NASPE], 2008), programs have been challenged to integrate, teach, monitor, and assess teacher candidates’ (TCs’) dispositions in systematic ways. According to the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), programs seeking to achieve or maintain accreditation have the freedom to …

It’S Different: Perceptions Of Risk And Resilience In Older Siblings Of Children With Disabilities, Bradley Hugh Reimers
Dissertations
The entry of a child with a disability into the family system can contribute to unique challenges, and potentially, joys for their families. Designed from a psychological resilience framework, this post-intentional phenomenological study specifically focused on the process of adaptation for five older siblings who had a younger sibling with an intellectual disability. To understand their perspectives about what their experiences had entailed, each adolescent participant wrote a daily check-in journal and completed both a photo-elicitation interview and a semi-structured interview. The results of this study indicated that adolescent older siblings adjusted to having a sibling with a disability by …

Dissertations
The world is changing. India is changing. Food is changing. Bodies are changing. What does this mean for the women of Maharashtra, India? Globalization and modernity manifest in new and interesting ways the world over. As people establish networks of global commodity, capital, and human circulation, anthropologists raise pertinent concerns. While some are apprehensive about cultural loss and western cultural imperialism, others make a case for the rise of glocalization. While some espouse the positives of a free market economy, others are critical of the nutrition transition in developing countries and what this means for the health of the people …

Elements Of Moral Functioning In Sport And School, Christopher Funk
Elements Of Moral Functioning In Sport And School, Christopher Funk
Dissertations
Moral functioning is complex and implicates numerous cognitive and affective processes. Drawing upon Rest’s four-component model of moral functioning and more recent dual-process accounts of cognition, the current study examined a model of moral functioning in both sport and school contexts. Specifically, drawing upon the empirical record, a model of moral functioning was proposed and tested wherein moral identity influenced the adoption of specific contesting orientations, which, in turn, influenced prosocial and antisocial behaviors, both directly and indirectly via moral foundations and moral disengagement. Fit of the model was moderately strong in both contexts, though significant contextual differences emerged, both …
Being-With Dying: Tacit Wisdom Embedded In The Experiences Of Nurses Who Attend To Dying, Virginia L. Burton
Being-With Dying: Tacit Wisdom Embedded In The Experiences Of Nurses Who Attend To Dying, Virginia L. Burton
Dissertations
Dying persons and their family members have needs that are notably unidentified and unmet in the United States today. This is in large part due to health professionals' being unprepared to provide end of life care that assists persons in their transition from dying to death with personal dignity and peace. Martin Heidegger's existential, interpretive phenomenology informed this study, providing the philosophical background, structures, language and metaphors to interpret narratives for patterns of being-with dying.
Does Truth Promote Peace? Toward A Greater Understanding Of Truth Commissions As Transitional Justice Mechanisms In Post-Conflict Countries, Eric Royer
Dissertations
This study explores the societal effects of transitional justice mechanisms in post-conflict countries. In particular, an emphasis is placed on exploring whether truth commissions, which are suggested in virtually all post-conflict situations today, exhibit a positive or negative effect on key indicators, such as democracy, human rights, economic development, and the durability of peace. Three central research questions are examined. First, do truth and reconciliation commissions “work”? In other words, are they associated with a reduction in communal violence and improvements in democratic institutions, human rights protections, and economic development? Second, must truth commissions be coupled with transitional justice mechanisms …

Bivariate Pearson correlations indicate a moderately strong negative relationship …
Achilles Is A Circadian Clock-Controlled Gene That Regulates The Immune System And Its Rhythmicity In Drosophila, Jiajia Li
Dissertations
Circadian clock is a transcriptional/translational feedback loop that drives the rhythmic expression of downstream mRNAs. Termed “clock-controlled genes,” these molecular outputs of the circadian clock orchestrate cellular, metabolic, and behavioral rhythms. As part of our on-going work to characterize key upstream regulators of circadian mRNA expression, we have identified a novel clock-controlled gene in Drosophila melanogaster, Achilles (Achl), which is rhythmic at the mRNA level in the brain and represses expression of immune response genes, especially anti-microbial peptides in the immune system. Achl knock-down in the brain dramatically elevates expression of crucial immune response genes, including IM1 …
Interactions Between Amyloid-Beta And Microglial Cells, Lisa Gouwens
Interactions Between Amyloid-Beta And Microglial Cells, Lisa Gouwens
Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by loss of memory and intellectual abilities. Intracellular plaques of aggregated amyloid-beta (Ab) protein are a well-known pathology associated with AD. Although symptoms usually appear late in life, the accumulation of Ab begins decades earlier and causes activation of microglia, the brain’s immune cells. The ensuing inflammation contributes significantly to neurodegeneration. Determination of the particular form of Ab that causes the most damage in the brain is one of the major questions in the AD field. My research focused on the interactions of microglia with monomers, …
Psychometric Evaluation Of The Counselor Supervisor Self-Efficacy Scale, Brittany Murphy
Psychometric Evaluation Of The Counselor Supervisor Self-Efficacy Scale, Brittany Murphy
Dissertations
Counselor supervision is an integral component in the development of counselors. While counseling and supervision share some similarities, they are distinct competencies that develop separately and therefore must be measured separately. The belief that one can perform the tasks associated with a particular role is conceptualized as self-efficacy, so supervisor self-efficacy requires its own scale to be measured appropriately. A descriptive correlational survey research design was used to examine the six factor structure of the Counselor Supervisor Self-Efficacy Scale (CSSES). Two hundred and five counselor supervisors completed the CSSES, an impression management scale, and a demographic survey. Confirmatory factor analysis …

Dissertations
This is an exploration of the perceptions and perspectives of early childhood leaders and practitioners with regards to preschool learners with autism engaged in inclusive educational settings. At a time when inclusive education is acknowledged as best practice, there is still a concern that many preschool learners with disabilities are receiving most of their supports in a segregated setting. Additional concerns noted in the current research relate directly to the beliefs, values, and attitudes towards inclusive education for learners with disabilities. No distinct study has been done with regards to this age group, nor to pinpoint the perceptions and perspectives …

A Mixed Methods Study On Educational Leadership And Ethical Decision Making In Situations Of High Turbulence, Jenna Sladeck
Dissertations
Researching ethical decision-making, within an educational setting, shed light on the importance of how each decision may influence an individual leader across generations. “A leader’s system of values, or deeply held beliefs, is the ethical framework from which a leader develops a vision, defines and shapes the change process and takes action to make his or her vision a reality” (Vogel, 2012, p. 1). The researcher sought to investigate the how and why of each decision to explore a possible gap between one leader to another, based on age, experience, education, gender and/or race. When an educational leader experienced a …
