Developing A Verbal Repertoire Using Sign Language And Skinner's Analysis Of Verbal Behavior, Mark L. Sundberg Dec 1980

Developing A Verbal Repertoire Using Sign Language And Skinner's Analysis Of Verbal Behavior, Mark L. Sundberg

Dissertations

A series of experiments on the use of sign language with hearing, non-vocal, mentally impaired individuals was conducted. Several researchers have shown that such persons can acquire signs; but in a recent review of the literature (Pulton & Algozzine, 1980), the authors conclude that there was no evidence that a "functional communication system" was acquired and in only one case had manual signing become a primary mode of communication. The problem may be related to the issue that most of the previous work on sign training has been based on traditional programs of language instruction. Such programs often place an …

This study was designed to examine the efforts of a desegregated urban public school district to reduce the incidence of student suspension over a three-year period. Category I suspensions, i.e., suspensions resulting from disruptive behavior not requiring legal action, constituted the data base for the study. These data were obtained from central office files maintained by schools for the three-year period 1972-75 following a directive issued by the superintendent of …

The Interrelationship Of Leader Self-Actualization And Life Stressors To The Resultant Incidence Of Reported Medical Problems Of Middle Management Educators, John S. Thatcher Aug 1980

The Interrelationship Of Leader Self-Actualization And Life Stressors To The Resultant Incidence Of Reported Medical Problems Of Middle Management Educators, John S. Thatcher

Dissertations

Schools, being a part of the larger social system, have not escaped the increasing pressures evident in our society. The principalship as an important component of the educational process has not enjoyed immunity from this same problem.

Because school principals are individuals, they react differently to life stressors. Some appear to have the ability to handle all stressors without suffering any onset of medical problems. Others appear not to have this immunity and as a result have medical difficulties. Because of this seeming difference and because of a lack of research of this type in education, the relationships between life …

A Field Test Of A Reading Program Needs Assessment Strategy, Linda Jane Howard Vingelen Aug 1980

A Field Test Of A Reading Program Needs Assessment Strategy, Linda Jane Howard Vingelen

Dissertations

This dissertation described a needs assessment model for a reading program and described the field testing of that model. The needs assessment model was a strategy for conducting a comprehensive and systematic assessment of reading program needs in kindergarten through Grade 12. The model could be used as a basis for educational program planning by a director of reading and a school superintendent. A model for conducting a reading program needs assessment was conceived and field tested because there were few available needs assessment models in reading which have been field tested. Field testing was particularly vital because only after …

A Study Of Localism In A Regional State University, Raymond E. Alie Aug 1980

A Study Of Localism In A Regional State University, Raymond E. Alie

Dissertations

This study investigated a relationship suggested in the literature between the level of service which academic departments in former teachers' colleges render to the teacher-training function and the local or cosmopolitan role orientation of their faculties. Localism and cosmopolitanism are polar sets of role expectations toward which professors and other professionals might orient. Dimensions of the local-cosmopolitan concept are: level of loyalty to the employing organization, commitment to professional role skills, and the use of an inner or outer reference group.

A scale of local-cosmopolitanism was constructed for this investigation. Validity of the instrument was established by panel judgment and …

The purposeof this study was to investigate the relationship between intrinsic-extrinsic religious motivation and patterns of self-concept for a selected sample of single young adults of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Since earlier studies have postulated negative and positive relationships between religious motivation andthe self-concept, there was a need to know if a significant relationship existed …
