Assessing Threats To Plant Populations: Linking Pollinator Differences To Patterns Of Plant Fitness And Population Genetics, Rieka Yu
Dissertations
Land use change is a major driver of biodiversity loss and consequently has led to the loss of genetic diversity in many plant populations due to declines in population sizes and an increase in spatial isolation. However, not all plant populations respond similarly to land-use change, suggesting there are additional mechanisms mediating plant population genetic patterns. Here, I examine the role of pollinators as this mediating factor. In Chapter 1 I conducted a meta-analysis to investigate how different types of pollinators drive changes in gene flow for plant populations in disturbed habitats, finding that different types of pollinators mediate different …
Role Of Ripk3 In The Pathogenesis Of Tet2 Mutant Hematopoietic Malignancies, Kanak Joshi
Role Of Ripk3 In The Pathogenesis Of Tet2 Mutant Hematopoietic Malignancies, Kanak Joshi
Dissertations
Hematopoiesis is dynamically controlled by an epigenetic landscape that regulates gene transcription. Ten-eleven translocation 2 (TET2) is a Fe2+ and α-ketoglutarate (α-KG)-dependent dioxygenase that regulates the transcriptional status of genes associated with hematopoietic stem cell self-renewal and multiple stages of lineage commitment and differentiation. TET2 mutations are commonly detected in almost all types of hematopoietic malignancies, including myeloproliferative disorder, acute myeloid leukemia, and peripheral T-cell lymphomas. In most cases, TET2 is a founder mutation that occurred in hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs). The mutant HSCs undergo clonal expansion and evolution with the accumulation of additional mutations for malignant transformation. Microbial-stimulated inflammatory …

It's Nerve Racking: The Lived Experiences Of New Graduate Clinical Care Nurses Using Simulation As Part Of An Orientation Program, Robert L. Kerner Jr.
Dissertations
The nursing profession has adopted high fidelity simulation (HFS) on the premise that it provides suitable opportunities for experiential learning in a non-threatening environment and it will improve clinical skills and critical thinking through repetition and reflective practice. Numerous quantitative studies have examined the effect of HFS on skill acquisition, critical thinking and teamwork, predominantly with experienced clinicians. The voice of the learner has been conspicuously absent in the discussion. The phenomenon of interest in this study was the experience of simulation for new graduate nurses. The participants were recruited using a purposive technique, and each underwent a comprehensive interview, …

Sensing The Rhizosphere: Microbial Transcriptome Responses To Root Exudates And Redox-Active Metabolites, Ankita Bhattacharyya
Dissertations
The term “rhizosphere” describes the dynamic interface between plant roots and soil influenced by root exudates. It is a hotspot of microbial activity, plant-microbe, and microbe-microbe interactions. Distinct variations in bacterial diversity are thought to be driven by plant root exudates. However, the molecular details of these processes still remain unclear.
I addressed this gap by focusing on two strains, Pseudomonas synxantha 2-79 and Burkholderia lata 383, representing diverse groups of Gammaproteobacteria comprised of species with environmental, agricultural, and medical significance. Effect Of Exercise Training On Circulating Cancer-Associated Immune Cells In Breast Cancer Patients, Lea Haverbeck Simon
Effect Of Exercise Training On Circulating Cancer-Associated Immune Cells In Breast Cancer Patients, Lea Haverbeck Simon
Dissertations
Breast cancer (BC) is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among females. It is well known that the presence of a tumor decreases robust anticancer immunity via immune-modulation and enhanced immunosuppression through a process called cancer immunoediting. However, it has yet to be determined if exercise-based rehabilitation can elevate the peripheral anticancer immune profile and reduce myeloid-derived suppressor cell (MDSC) mediated immunosuppression. Purpose: To assess the effects of a 12-week prescribed, individualized, supervised exercise-based rehabilitation program on selected circulating immune cells in BC patients at the University of Northern Colorado Cancer Rehabilitation Institute. Methods: 16 female BC patients …

Visual Circuitry In Adaptive Behavior: Extraction Of Complex Visual Image Information By Arrays Of Non-Image Forming Eyes, Thomas Kipp Halladay Groves
Dissertations
A complete understanding of how neural circuitry underlies the detection and integration of visual cues continues to elude researchers in the 21st century. Since the dawn of life on earth, light has exerted enormous selective pressure on all living organisms. Visual systems represent one of the most common sensory systems in existence, with significant homologies among elements of these systems, such as photopigments and developmental genes. Offering nearly unmatched single cell access at all levels of its nervous system, the European medicinal leech (Hirudo spp.) is an excellent system in which to identify behaviorally relevant neuronal circuits. Hirudo evolved discrete …
Reactive Oxygen Species And Weak Magnetic Fields: Unraveling The Mechanisms Of Planarian Regeneration And Tissue Growth, Luke James Kinsey
Reactive Oxygen Species And Weak Magnetic Fields: Unraveling The Mechanisms Of Planarian Regeneration And Tissue Growth, Luke James Kinsey
Dissertations
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a critical role in basic cellular behaviors such as apoptosis, proliferation, and differentiation. These molecules once thought to be harmful byproducts of metabolism, are also required for many complex and ubiquitous processes like wound healing, development, and regeneration. This study investigates the influence of ROS on planarian regeneration, with a particular focus on ROS dynamics in stem cell-mediated tissue growth. Data reveal that modulation of ROS levels leads to changes in cellular behaviors and tissue growth outcomes. Inhibition of ROS accumulation blocks stem cell proliferation and tissue growth, preventing planarian regeneration, while partial ROS accumulation …
A Review Of The Role Of Anxiety In Diagnosis Of Children And Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Paradigm Shift In Conceptualization And Diagnosis, Evan Wahlquist
Dissertations
Early evidence of co-occurring anxiety symptoms in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) dates back to the first descriptions of ASD by Leo Kanner (1943) and Hans Asperger (Frith & Mira, 1992). While current research has identified anxiety disorders as one of the most prevalent co-occurring disorders in children and adolescents with ASD, little is known about the nature of the relationship between these disorders. In an effort to explain these high prevalence rates, recent research has started to investigate the relationship between these two disorders. To join these efforts, this clinical research project explored the role of …

Latinx teachers play a crucial role in helping Latinx students experience success in public schools, but a growing sub-population of resentful White Americans …
Oikophilia: Relationships Among Life, Human Life, And Place In School Communities And Their Expressions In Curriculum, Mandi Leigh
Oikophilia: Relationships Among Life, Human Life, And Place In School Communities And Their Expressions In Curriculum, Mandi Leigh
Dissertations
This naturalistic, non-experimental inquiry explored relationships among life, human life, and place in school communities along with their expressions in school curriculum. I used educational criticism and connoisseurship to richly describe, interpret meaning, evaluate significance, and discern thematics surrounding relationships and how those relationships were expressed in the curriculum. Postmodern ecology provided the framework for acknowledging ecological precarity and performing the critical, as in essential, work of deconstructing what harms life that could be reconstituted as nourishment. The first study question was: What relationships exist among life, human life, and place in school communities? To answer the question, ecological data …

This dissertation explores the everyday practice of home and community vegetable gardening in a small southern Illinois city. The project engages with questions of how diverse elements of practice interact over time in the development of both gardens and gardeners, dwelling particularly on how the material agency of nonhumans contributes to what emerges. Combining a broad investigation of societal influences and constraints involved in gardening practices with a granular focus on material interactions in the garden, I consider the kinds of relationships individuals forge with the nonhuman environment in a modern, Western context and how they do so. Understanding such …
Exploring Biotic And Abiotic Constraints On Competition For Signal Space Within Birdsong Communities, Joanna M. Sblendorio
Exploring Biotic And Abiotic Constraints On Competition For Signal Space Within Birdsong Communities, Joanna M. Sblendorio
Dissertations
With the acceleration of climate change and the conversion of natural ecosystems to human-dominated landscapes, there is concern for the persistence of biodiversity amid novel biotic and abiotic factors. An important outcome of shifting species distributions and environmental disturbance is the formation of novel assemblages. For animals that vocalize for mate attraction and resource defense, the introduction of new species into communities may alter availability of acoustic space for signaling and affect detection of signals by conspecifics. Thus, to minimize signal overlap, species should partition signal space and thereby inhabit well-defined acoustic niches. Yet mixed evidence exists regarding signal space …

Positive Emotions And Sexual Desire Among Healthy Women, Elizabeth J. Brough
Positive Emotions And Sexual Desire Among Healthy Women, Elizabeth J. Brough
Dissertations
Sexual desire disorders are highly prevalent, account for a significant proportion of sexual problems, and affect important aspects of women's lives. Sexuality research has traditionally focused on dysfunction models, rather than human strengths approaches. Recently, positive psychologists have developed models and methods to examine human strengths. This study used Frederickson's Broaden and Build model to examine links between positive emotions and sexual desire among women. Positive emotions words were examined relative to sexual domains frequently cited in clinical studies, and compared to sexual cognitions which have been linked to positive sexual outcomes in past studies.
