The findings from this study of independent t-tests …
Comparative Assessment Of Agricultural Literacy In Selected K-5 Classrooms Employing Agriculture In The Classroom Methodologies: A Solomon Four-Group Analysis, Mary Margaret Fischer
Comparative Assessment Of Agricultural Literacy In Selected K-5 Classrooms Employing Agriculture In The Classroom Methodologies: A Solomon Four-Group Analysis, Mary Margaret Fischer
Dissertations
The significance of agriculture to future generations is unparalleled. The United Nations projects the global population to swell to 9.75 billion people by 2050, and to proliferate to 11.2 billion by 2100. The non-agricultural population has little to no understanding or comprehension of the complexities of sustaining a viable agricultural system. Agricultural literacy is an area often unseen and rarely discussed outside specific agricultural disciplines. Society does not view agriculture as being important, yet it is important that society be properly educated on issues in order to reach well-informed decisions and render prudent choices that impact the world around them. …
Parasitism Of Free-Ranging Neotropical Primates: Examining Parasite-Host And Parasite-Parasite Relationships, Gideon A. Erkenswick
Parasitism Of Free-Ranging Neotropical Primates: Examining Parasite-Host And Parasite-Parasite Relationships, Gideon A. Erkenswick
Dissertations
Parasites are infectious agents that require resources from host organisms to complete all or part of their lifecycles. It is customary for wild animals to acquire and maintain multiple parasitic infections during their lifetime. The effects of parasites on hosts vary across demographic and environmental variables, and in relation to each other. Moreover, the propensity for a host animal to acquire an infection can be influenced by other host species in the area that are susceptible to the same parasites. This dissertation describes and explores the natural parasite assemblage of a free-ranging community of nonhuman primates in the Peruvian Amazon …

Big Data Analytics In Computational Biology And Bioinformatics, Kevin Byron
Big Data Analytics In Computational Biology And Bioinformatics, Kevin Byron
Dissertations
Big data analytics in computational biology and bioinformatics refers to an array of operations including biological pattern discovery, classification, prediction, inference, clustering as well as data mining in the cloud, among others. This dissertation addresses big data analytics by investigating two important operations, namely pattern discovery and network inference.
The dissertation starts by focusing on biological pattern discovery at a genomic scale. Research reveals that the secondary structure in non-coding RNA (ncRNA) is more conserved during evolution than its primary nucleotide sequence. Using a covariance model approach, the stems and loops of an ncRNA secondary structure are represented as a …
Synthesis And Detection Of Dna Damage, Xun Gao
Synthesis And Detection Of Dna Damage, Xun Gao
Dissertations
The biological effects of DNA alkyl adducts are difficult to evaluate at the cellular level due to their instability. Synthesis of oligonucleotides that contain a single N7-alkylguanine has become a vital tool to achieve the above goal. However, the instability of N7-alkyguanines is not compatible with the phosphoramidite chemistry used by solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis either. Development of chemically stable analogues of unstable DNA lesions enables accurate study of polymerase bypass. The design and successful synthesis of N7-hydroxyethyl-9-deaza-2′-deoxyguanosine and N7-oxoethyl-9-deaza-2′-deoxyguanosine as the stable analogues of N7-hydroxyethyl- 2'-deoxyguanosine and N7-oxoethyl-2′-deoxyguanosine, respectively, are reported. The synthesis of these two nucleosides whose N7 side …
Qualitative Modeling Of Chaotic Logical Circuits And Walking Droplets: A Dynamical Systems Approach, Aminur Rahman
Qualitative Modeling Of Chaotic Logical Circuits And Walking Droplets: A Dynamical Systems Approach, Aminur Rahman
Dissertations
Logical circuits and wave-particle duality have been studied for most of the 20th century. During the current century scientists have been thinking differently about these well-studied systems. Specifically, there has been great interest in chaotic logical circuits and hydrodynamic quantum analogs.
Traditional logical circuits are designed with minimal uncertainty. While this is straightforward to achieve with electronic logic, other logic families such as fluidic, chemical, and biological, naturally exhibit uncertainties due to their inherent nonlinearity. In recent years, engineers have been designing electronic logical systems via chaotic circuits. While traditional boolean circuits have easily determined outputs, which renders dynamical models …

A Case Study: An Andragogical Exploration Of A Collegiate Swimming And Diving Coach’S Principles And Practices At Lindenwood University, Hannibal Najjar
Dissertations
Andragogy, defined as, “the art and science of helping adults learn” (Knowles, 1980, p. 43) has been used in education and organizations for more than five decades. This philosophy was examined in this study to explore to what extent Andragogy was being used, and perceived to be used, by the coach in a collegiate athletic program. Interviews, observations, and surveys of the coach, along with questionnaires, surveys, and focus group sessions of the student-athletes were used to determine whether an andragogically based coaching approach positively affected the performances and outcomes of the participants. By utilizing an adaptation of Henschke’s (1989) …

Biosorption Of Pharmaceuticals And Noble Metals Nanoparticles By Algal Turf Communities, Haider Abid Faraj
Biosorption Of Pharmaceuticals And Noble Metals Nanoparticles By Algal Turf Communities, Haider Abid Faraj
Dissertations
Pharmaceuticals and nanoparticles are increasingly released into the aquatic ecosystem, while removing these contaminants from waters can be challenging. This study explores the use of periphytic algal turf communities to remove these contaminants. Initially algal turfs from different locations and aquatic systems were analyzed for pharmaceuticals commonly observed in wastewater outflows. Lab-grown turfs were exposed to a mixture of six representative pharmaceuticals of different functionality (acid, base, neutral and steroidal). Analysis of water column and the algal biomass showed pharmaceutical removal rates varied, specific to each pharmaceutical. Caffeine and estradiol had the highest removal rates while carbamazepine was not removed. …
The Influence Of Training Procedures On Generalization Performance In Scent-Detection Rats, Erin Watkins
The Influence Of Training Procedures On Generalization Performance In Scent-Detection Rats, Erin Watkins
Dissertations
The global illicit trade in tobacco products leads to an overall increase in the availability of tobacco, and this increase in tobacco availability and consumption undermines effective health, safety, and taxation policies in place to protect current and future populations. Dogs working at ports and customs have been trained to detect tobacco products and research has shown rats can detect tobacco-soaked filters (Mahoney et al., 2014). Cigarette smoking is the most common form of tobacco use, and cigarettes are the most commonly trafficked product in the illicit tobacco trade. In the current study, rats were trained to respond to filter …
Good Looking In The Dark: A Narrative Across Three Mediums, Aimee J. Valentine
Good Looking In The Dark: A Narrative Across Three Mediums, Aimee J. Valentine
Dissertations
Good Looking in the Dark: A Narrative Across Three Mediums is a single story presented in three distinct formats: short story, stage drama, and graphic narrative. This project is an exploration of the creative process and its relation to medium, reader anticipation, participation and response. Reflecting my position that narrative meaning is made primarily in the dark space of the reader’s mind, the story selected for this project is one that takes place almost entirely in the dark. In Good Looking in the Dark, two strangers are locked in a closet and engage one another without seeing the other—just …
Artificial Immune Systems: Applications, Multi-Class Classification, Optimizations, And Analysis, Brian Haroldo Schmidt
Artificial Immune Systems: Applications, Multi-Class Classification, Optimizations, And Analysis, Brian Haroldo Schmidt
Dissertations
The focus of this research is the application of the Artificial Immune System (AIS) paradigm to a new research area along with the modifications necessary to adapt it to a new problem. In the past 10 years, there has been much research into the use of various Machine Learning (ML) algorithms in Network Flow Traffic Classification. AIS algorithms have thus far not been applied to this problem. Because AIS algorithms have been used extensively for Network Intrusion Detection applications, which is a similar area of research, the motivation to extend them to the network flow classification problem is clear.

Middle School Student And Teacher Perceptions About The Effectiveness Of The Technology Integration In The Classroom, David R. Irby
Middle School Student And Teacher Perceptions About The Effectiveness Of The Technology Integration In The Classroom, David R. Irby
Dissertations
Technology in schools is not a new phenomenon, however, whether technology integration is successful or not is up for debate. Critics of technology in the classroom write about failed attempts to integrate technology into the classroom in a meaningful way. Research indicates that we still have teachers using technology in ways that may not be much different than traditional teaching practices.
The literature describes varying levels of technology usage in the classroom. Some researchers describe technology as overrated and not fulfilling the promise to improve the teaching and learning experience. Other research describes unique uses of technology that promote engaging …

Exploring Whites' Recognition Of Racial Microaggressions Through An Existential Lens, Ashley Gold Parker
Exploring Whites' Recognition Of Racial Microaggressions Through An Existential Lens, Ashley Gold Parker
Dissertations
Substantive evidence demonstrates that targets of racial discrimination (i.e., people of color) are acutely aware of racial microaggressions when they occur. Far less research has explored the interpretive experiences of perpetrators and bystanders of race-related prejudice and discrimination, individuals who are typically White. The current study sought to identify personal and situational factors that affect Whites’ recognition of racial microaggressions. The sample consisted of self-identified exclusively White/Caucasian adults (N=210) who completed questionnaires exploring Belief in a Just World (BJW), Social Dominance Orientation (SDO), and three facets of Ethnocultural Empathy (Awareness, Perspective-Taking, and Empathic Action). Participants were randomly assigned …
Biologically Active Filters: An Advanced Treatment Process For Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products, Shuangyi Zhang
Biologically Active Filters: An Advanced Treatment Process For Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products, Shuangyi Zhang
Dissertations
With the increasing concern of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in source water, this study examines the hypothesis that existing filters and adsorbents in water treatment plants can be converted to biologically active filters (BAFs) to treat these compounds. Removals through bench-scale BAFs are evaluated as a function of media, granular activated carbon (GAC) and dual-media, empty bed contact time (EBCT), and pre-ozonation. For GAC BAFs, greater oxygen consumption, increased pH drop, and greater DOC removal normalized to adenosine triphosphate (ATP) are observed indicating a different microbial community compared to dual-media BAFs. ATP concentrations in the upper portion of …

A Model For Anomalies Detection In Internet Of Things (Iot) Using Inverse Weight Clustering And Decision Tree, Ahod Alghuried
Dissertations
Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the fast growing technologies today. It is a technology by which billions of smart objects or devices known as “Things” can use several types of sensors to collect various types of data about themselves and/or the surrounding environment. They can then share this with authorized parties to serve several purposes such as controlling and monitoring industrial facilities or improving business service or functions. There are currently 3 billion devices connected to the Internet. The number will increase to 20 billion by 2020. While these devices make our life easier, safer and healthier, they …
Examining The Regulation Of Kv7 K+ Channels In Airway Smooth Muscle Cells And Their Potential As Novel Therapeutic Targets For The Treatment Of Asthma, Jennifer Haick
Dissertations
Asthma is a disease characterized by nonspecific and exaggerated airway narrowing, termed airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), which involves the excessive contraction of airway smooth muscle. Despite the fact that airway smooth muscle is widely studied and understood to play a role in AHR, little is known about the specifics of that role. Our laboratory recently found that Kv7 potassium (K+) channels are expressed in airway smooth muscle cells (ASMCs). Kv7 channels are voltage sensitive K+ channels whose outward flux of K+ ions promotes a negative resting membrane voltage in excitable cells, thereby opposing electrical excitability. Inhibition of K+ channels is known …
Role Of The Interleukin-22 And Stat3 Signaling Pathway In Gut Barrier Maintenance Following Intoxication And Burn Injury, Adam M. Hammer
Role Of The Interleukin-22 And Stat3 Signaling Pathway In Gut Barrier Maintenance Following Intoxication And Burn Injury, Adam M. Hammer
Dissertations
More than half of patients admitted to burn centers for treatment have measurable alcohol levels in their blood. Intoxication that precedes a traumatic burn injury leads to worsened patient outcomes, including higher rates of infection and sepsis. The intestines harbor the largest concentration of bacteria in the human host. Any disruption of the intestinal barrier as a result of intoxication and burn injury could contribute to infection and/or sepsis from gut-derived microbes. Previous work has demonstrated that the intestinal barrier becomes leaky, and that administration of interleukin-22 (IL-22) significantly reduces gut barrier leakiness following alcohol and burn injury. However, the …
Endocytic Vesicle Rupture In The Pathogenesis And Propagation Of Neurodegenerative Proteinopathies, William P. Flavin
Endocytic Vesicle Rupture In The Pathogenesis And Propagation Of Neurodegenerative Proteinopathies, William P. Flavin
Dissertations
Numerous pathological amyloid proteins spread from cell-to-cell during neurodegenerative disease, facilitating the propagation of cellular pathology and disease progression. Understanding the mechanism by which disease-associated amyloid protein assemblies enter target cells and induce cellular dysfunction is therefore key to understanding the progressive nature of such neurodegenerative proteinopathies. In this study, we utilized an imaging-based assay to monitor the ability of disease-associated amyloid assemblies to induce the rupture of intracellular vesicles following endocytosis, as well as to elucidate the cellular consequences of this damaging mechanism of invasion. We observed that the ability to induce vesicle rupture is a conserved feature of …

Characterization Of The Effect Of Aeration On A Commercially Available Fibrin Sealant For Use In Wound Therapy, Adam Robert Marek
Dissertations
Wound care affects millions of people worldwide each year, and the need for an effective wound therapy still exists. The aim of this study was to characterize a novel, aerated biopolymer, fibrin foam, which is generated through a patented mixing process using a commercially-available fibrin sealant. This research developed a distinct preparation of fibrin foam that creates a porous environment with improved wound healing properties. With this fibrin foam, characterization assessments were performed, including evaluation of mixing parameters, biocompatibility, and biomechanical strengths.
Fibrin foam is created by performing six passes through a mixing device, which generates a foam matrix with …
Behavioral Symptoms, Functional And Cognitive Recovery Post-Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Seema Nasser
Behavioral Symptoms, Functional And Cognitive Recovery Post-Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Seema Nasser
Dissertations
Mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) accounts for 80–90% of the nearly two million traumatic brain injuries (TBI) that occur each year. The psychological consequences of MTBI can be extensive and can persist well beyond the acute injury, profoundly impacting the lives of the individual, their families, and society. A substantial number of MTBI patients suffer depressive mood, fatigue, and poor sleep (i.e., behavioral symptoms) for weeks and months post-injury. These symptoms reduce quality of life and delay the return to previous cognitive and functional status. Behavioral symptoms of depressed mood, fatigue, and poor sleep commonly co-occur and thus may constitute …
Maintaining College Access In A Post Recession Era: A Multi-Level Competing Risks Model, Brendan Martin
Maintaining College Access In A Post Recession Era: A Multi-Level Competing Risks Model, Brendan Martin
Dissertations
Post-Great Recession budgets cuts and funding freezes have decreased the level of institutional resources available to recruit and retain undergraduate students. To optimize remaining expenditures in this challenging climate, new analytical approaches must be considered to evaluate and interpret pre-enrollment student data. To date, much of the higher education literature has focused on predicting enrollment using traditional fixed or mixed effects binary logistic models. While robust, these modeling approaches are constrained by standard statistical assumptions, do not account for the timing of students' enrollment decisions, and cannot efficiently incorporate censored data points or competitor information. This study applies a multi-level, …
Characterization Of Quorum-Quenching Lactonases And Plp-Dependent Aminotransferases: Structure, Mechanism And Alternative Turnover, Romila Nina Mascarenhas
Characterization Of Quorum-Quenching Lactonases And Plp-Dependent Aminotransferases: Structure, Mechanism And Alternative Turnover, Romila Nina Mascarenhas
Dissertations
Cell-to-cell communication by bacteria is essential for the regulation of gene expression important in colonization, biofilm formation, virulence and other processes. This communication is called "quorum-sensing" and is mediated by small molecules called autoinducers. One major class of autoinducers used by gram-negative bacteria is N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHL's). Enzymes capable of disrupting this communication are called "quorum-quenching" catalysts and have proven to be invaluable biochemical tools for understanding quorum-sensing pathways. Quorum-quenching enzymes hold promise for application in anti-biofouling, agriculture, aquaculture, bioremediation and other synthetic biology settings. However, the mechanisms that these enzymes use to recognize and process their substrates are …
Husserl And Community, Sean Stephen Petranovich
Husserl And Community, Sean Stephen Petranovich
Dissertations
This dissertation is on Edmund Husserl's concept of personal community. I argue that Husserl's concept of community is based on his formal theory of parts and wholes. More specifically, it is argued that the terms Husserl uses to describe features of community in his later writings are already established early in his philosophical career. The first three chapters of the dissertation focus on Husserl's unique conception of community in general. The final two chapters turn to political communities from a Husserlian standpoint.
In the first chapter, I investigate how Husserl's account of the ontological structure of community is tied to …
The Master And The Midwife: Levinas And Plato On Teaching, Rebecca Glenn Scott
The Master And The Midwife: Levinas And Plato On Teaching, Rebecca Glenn Scott
Dissertations
In this dissertation, I examine the concept of teaching as it appears in the work of Emmanuel Levinas. In particular, I show how Levinas's notion of teaching arises out of both a retrieval and a critique of Platonic thought. On the one hand, Levinas embraces the transcendence of Platonism, but at the same time, he is often quite critical of Socratic education. I argue, contrary to Levinas, that Socratic education is, in fact, consonant with Levinas's philosophy, particularly when we recognize that Levinas's notion of a primordial teaching must involve a relation both with "absolute" alterity and with what he …
The Female Urogynecological Microbiome: Determining Niche Specificity, Krystal Thomas-White
The Female Urogynecological Microbiome: Determining Niche Specificity, Krystal Thomas-White
Dissertations
Contrary to dogma, urine is not sterile. Recent discoveries show that the female urinary bladder contains a unique microbiome, with differences in healthy and disease states. This female urinary microbiome (FUM) is distinguishable from vulvo-vaginal contamination; yet, only the few centimeters of the urethra separate these two niches. Recent studies show that the most common bladder organisms are Lactobacillus, Gardnerella, Streptococcus, Corynebacterium, and a diverse group of anaerobes, the same genera commonly found in the vagina. Thus, we asked if the bladder and vaginal microbiomes are interconnected.
Previous work suggests a link between these two niches. The vaginal tract of reproductive …
Examining The Effects Of Adolescent Binge Alcohol Exposure On The Negative Feedback Of The Hpa Axis And Adult Responses To Psychological Stress, Audrey Rose Torcaso
Examining The Effects Of Adolescent Binge Alcohol Exposure On The Negative Feedback Of The Hpa Axis And Adult Responses To Psychological Stress, Audrey Rose Torcaso
Dissertations
Binge drinking during adolescence is a common occurrence which is associated with increased risk of developing alcohol dependence and other mental health disorders. Hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction is one characteristic commonly observed in many affective disorders, including anxiety and depression. Our laboratory has previously demonstrated that adolescent binge-pattern alcohol exposure results in long-term dysfunction of the HPA axis in a Wistar rat model, characterized by deficient glucocorticoid feedback inhibition. The current study aimed to characterize the behavioral phenotype of these rats in response to psychological stress during adulthood, and furthermore sought to understand the molecular mechanisms by which adolescent binge …
