Stable Auto Focus Re-Triggering With Hand Shake Motion Compensation, Ruiduo Yang Feb 2019

Stable Auto Focus Re-Triggering With Hand Shake Motion Compensation, Ruiduo Yang

Defensive Publications Series

Automatic focusing by a camera involves actively scanning possible lens positions and choosing one that provides the sharpest image. Triggering too frequently can result in image frames captured during the process leading to an out-of-focus image. On the other hand, triggering less often can also lead to an out-of-focus image due to changes in the scene being captured that occur after automatic focus was locked. Scene changes due to hand shaking or camera motion are typically not taken into account by the automatic focusing process. As a result, any such changes that occur after locking focus can result in an …

Parallelizing Tests With Pessimistic Speculative Execution, Tavis Ormandy Feb 2019

Parallelizing Tests With Pessimistic Speculative Execution, Tavis Ormandy

Defensive Publications Series

Fuzzy testing or fuzzing is a technique for finding software vulnerabilities. Fuzzing works by feeding quasi-random, auto-generated input sequences to a target program and searching for failures. Fuzzers find inputs that trigger bugs; however, understanding those bugs is easier when extraneous data is removed to the extent possible. Extraneous data is removed by bisection, which is typically a serial procedure, e.g., doesn’t advance without knowing the result of the previous step. This makes test case optimization slow, sometimes taking hours to complete while CPU cores sit idle.

This disclosure describes techniques that parallelize the bisection procedure, e.g., by speculatively executing …

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are described herein for using vehicle data for the creation of a seed number for cryptography generation in-car as a potential replacement for private keys. In this approach, each vehicle generates its keys by itself and is also able to rekey independently without the need for a central key generation system. Unlike vehicle keys today, which are generated centrally (mostly at manufacture time) and thus are exposed to a single source of failure if the key generator is compromised, the impact of a key compromise as described herein is isolated to one vehicle. Thus, whereas a threat today would …

Symmetric Ear-Related Ambisonics Rendering, Alper Güngörmüsler, Andrew Allen Feb 2019

Symmetric Ear-Related Ambisonics Rendering, Alper Güngörmüsler, Andrew Allen

Defensive Publications Series

Immersive virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) environments rely on high-quality audio. To this end, VR and AR platform developers have adopted Ambisonics, which is a technique used to record, modify, and recreate a full-sphere surround sound. To render (or decode) the sound field as faithful as possible, developers often use a set of head-related transfer functions (HRTFs). However, the use of HRTFs, which are processed with truncated spherical harmonics, increases errors with increase in frequency scale. A new method for rendering spatial audio ambisonically that handles each ear independently shifts the paradigm. The conventional HRTF ambisonic encoding is …

Click-To-Call Conversion Measurement Based On Transcribing Conversation, Alex Jacobson Feb 2019

Click-To-Call Conversion Measurement Based On Transcribing Conversation, Alex Jacobson

Defensive Publications Series

The conversion metric, which is the ratio of sales (or other predefined result) to advertisement impressions or clicks, is a key measure for advertisers to assess the value derived from digital advertising. In click-to-call ads, which show a link for mobile users to initiate a call to an advertiser, conversions, if any, occur over the phone after the user clicks the ad. Conversions that occur over the phone are difficult to document, in turn making it difficult to accurately measure the conversion metric. This disclosure describes use of machine learning techniques to transcribe, with user and advertiser permission, the call …
