Alert The User On Unsecure Print, Hp Inc Aug 2019

Alert The User On Unsecure Print, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

Printers have become a regular household device. Printer owners or IT administrators do not see

them always as fully equipped network computers. Printers sitting in one corner of the office or

house and quietly going about the business of copying, printing, scanning & faxing might not seem

to pose any real security threat. But hackers increasingly find them very attractive for malicious

intents. So like any other networked device, if not properly managed, they can expose sensitive

campus or personal data to unauthorized access and misuse.

Mobile Phone Based Media Size And Count, Hp Inc Aug 2019

Mobile Phone Based Media Size And Count, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

In printers, the media size and count are measured with the help of various sensors.

These solutions work well, however the low cost printers cannot have the luxury of such

sensors and we have to compromise by asking the user to choose the media size while

printing and no media count feature support for such printers.

The idea here talks about a solution, using the mobile phone capabilities, to calculate

media size and count without the need of having such sensors.

Automatic Printer Persistent Connection Management By Means Of Machine Learning, Hp Inc Aug 2019

Automatic Printer Persistent Connection Management By Means Of Machine Learning, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

We propose a hybrid, long-lived network connection mechanism that alternates

between polling and persistent operation modes based on the activity profile of

network-enabled printing devices. Our Machine Learning method is able to predict

“printing peaks”, proactively alternating the connection mode back and forth from

polling (for those moments of low activity) to persistent model (for high demanding

usage scenarios). This strategy combines the advantages of low consumption, low cost

polling connections, and at the same time provides low response times offered by

persistent connections. Our solution minimizes costs and maximizes network usage and

performance, respecting the availability requirement thanks to …

Method To Decrease The Vertical Distance In Wireless Charging Aug 2019

Method To Decrease The Vertical Distance In Wireless Charging

Defensive Publications Series

This publication describes methods to accommodate a decrease in the vertical distance between a power transmitter (PTx) of a wireless power-transfer (WPT) system (e.g., wireless-charging pad, Qi charger) and a power receiver (PRx) of a user equipment (UE), such as a smartphone, earphones, a smartwatch, and the like. Original design manufacturers (ODMs) design and build increasingly thinner WPT systems and thinner UE. A decrease in the vertical distance between the PTx and the PRx causes an increase in the PTx-to-PRx inductive coupling coefficient (Kc), where 0c<1. Subsequently, the input-to-output voltage gain (AV) is lower, which is not a desirable design. …

High-Density Voltage Regulator Using Multi-Fed Polygon Inductor, N/A Aug 2019

High-Density Voltage Regulator Using Multi-Fed Polygon Inductor, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

Data centers today employ powerful CPUs and GPUs that consume a significant amount of current, e.g., up to a thousand amperes of current. To mitigate large thermal losses in the power delivery network that occur at such high amperages, voltage regulators (VR) are moved closer to their loads, e.g., vertically below the loads. For a VR to fit in the tight space below the load, it must be of high density and integrate the decoupling capacitors that often occupy the space below the load. This disclosure describes a scalable, multi-fed-polygon (MFP) coupled inductor that is optimized for vertical power delivery. …

Classifying Ssd Input-Output Streams To Optimize Storage Overprovisioning, Bin Tan, Narges Shahidi, Manuel Benitez Aug 2019

Classifying Ssd Input-Output Streams To Optimize Storage Overprovisioning, Bin Tan, Narges Shahidi, Manuel Benitez

Defensive Publications Series

The data update mechanism for a solid-state drive (SSD) involves overprovisioning, e.g., a storage footprint larger than the actual data size, and write amplification, e.g., a physical amount of information written being a multiple of the actual amount of information. Both overprovisioning and write amplification overheads are at least partially a result of treating input data streams as statistically indistinguishable streams and subjecting them to fixed, pre-configured provisioning.

This disclosure describes techniques to classify the input-output streams of an SSD into various types, e.g., non-overlapped sequential data, chunked data streams of variable length, etc. Overprovisioning is optimized for each input …

Poll-Optimized Adaptation Of Pci-Express, N/A Aug 2019

Poll-Optimized Adaptation Of Pci-Express, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

CPUs monitor the network interface by spin-loop polling or by the use of interrupts. Spin-loop polling delivers high performance but consumes significant amounts of power and generates heat. The use of interrupts is less power hungry but causes substantial latency.

This disclosure describes techniques that introduce, for certain CPU requests, a bounded (<10 μs or so) delay in the return of a completion packet from the peripheral device to the CPU. This reduces the energy spent by the CPU on read/compare/repeat loops and enables operations like direct memory access to get more bandwidth while retaining the high performance of spin-loop polling. The techniques leverage the multiple-outstanding-transactions and out-of-order completions features of the PCIe (or similar) buses to achieve zero or near-zero delay penalties while substantially mitigating the power and thermal consequences of spin-loop polling.

Reducing Warpage In Foldable Oled Screens, Wenli Tan, Davis Ou, Chun Tseng Aug 2019

Reducing Warpage In Foldable Oled Screens, Wenli Tan, Davis Ou, Chun Tseng

Defensive Publications Series

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens are becoming popular in consumer devices due to the ability to fold such screens. However, repeated folding and unfolding is known to cause bending (warpage) at the fold. This disclosure describes techniques that reduce warpage by introducing a fan at the hinge. By Bernoulli’s principle, an increase in air speed along the fan axis causes a pressure differential perpendicular to the axis of the fan, e.g., across the fold. This pressure differential undoes the warpage.

Storing Non-Overlapped Data Streams In Solid-State Drives, Bin Tan, Narges Shahidi, Manuel Benitez Aug 2019

Storing Non-Overlapped Data Streams In Solid-State Drives, Bin Tan, Narges Shahidi, Manuel Benitez

Defensive Publications Series

In solid-state drives (SSDs), data is generally not updated in place. Rather, data update in SSDs involves garbage collection, in turn facilitated by over-provisioning of storage capacity. Over-provisioning reduces actual available storage capacity. Garbage collection results in write amplification, an undesirable phenomenon where the amount of information physically written is a multiple of the logical amount of information to be written. Write amplification reduces the life of the SSD. Write amplification is partially a result of treating input data streams as random data streams and subjecting the streams to a pre-configured maximum data capacity.

Per the techniques described herein, input …
