Defensive Publications Series

The operation of a user equipment is constrained during a prohibit time interval to reduce the likelihood of service interruptions due to a radio link failure. The constraints include preventing the user equipment from camping or connecting to the network via the cell during the prohibit time interval. The duration of the prohibit time interval is modified based on whether the radio link failure problem persisted (or reoccurred) following the prohibit time interval.

Just-In-Time Delivery Of Text-To-Speech Playback, Jared M. Zimmerman, Joe Ashear Mar 2020

Just-In-Time Delivery Of Text-To-Speech Playback, Jared M. Zimmerman, Joe Ashear

Defensive Publications Series

In an interaction between a virtual assistant and a user, it is often the case that the responses of the virtual assistant arrive just after the passage of critical events in the user’s timeline. For example, navigational instructions to exit a freeway sometimes arrive just a bit too late to take the off-ramp. Some of this latency is attributable to the very nature of spoken audio playback: spoken audio playback being a linear medium, the length of time required for the spoken content to play can affect the accuracy of time-sensitive actions. This disclosure describes techniques that take into account …

Virtual Ambient Lighting For User-Interface Elements, Nick Bearman Mar 2020

Virtual Ambient Lighting For User-Interface Elements, Nick Bearman

Defensive Publications Series

This publication describes systems and techniques to adaptively apply virtual ambient lighting to user-interface (UI) elements on a portable electronic device. Portable electronic devices, such as smartphones, include a UI with passive elements and interactive elements. The UI generally presents elements, including interactive elements, as flat, two-dimensional objects. Because the UI does not intuitively differentiate interactive elements from passive elements, a user must rely on prior experience or trial-and-error to identify the interactive elements. This publication discloses a portable electronic device that captures and analyzes the lighting environment around the user of the device and displays onscreen elements as part …

A Framework To Monitor A Failure Predictive Machine Learning Models Performance With Non-Failure Data, Hp Inc Mar 2020

A Framework To Monitor A Failure Predictive Machine Learning Models Performance With Non-Failure Data, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

We built a new framework to evaluate a production failure predictive model performance using a

set of healthy non failure data. This framework gives us the capability to quickly access the model

performance as soon as we deploy it into production. In the past, in order to access a failure

predictive model performance, ones need to have some number of failures to happened in the field

and then looking back in time if prediction was ever made for those failures. If the true positive

windows is 60 days then you have to wait more than 60 days to be able …

Memory Management Using Tab Discard And Reload Prediction, Jon Napper, Michael Giuffrida, Guoxing Zhao, Omri Amarilio, Grace Chung, Greg Granito

Defensive Publications Series

Browsers and other multi-tab applications discard tabs when there is insufficient memory. When a tab has been discarded, the user is forced to reload the tab to continue interaction. Selection of tabs to discard can be based on simple heuristics; however, such selection can lead to discarding tabs that the user is likely to use. Incorrectly discarded tabs are disruptive to users. This disclosure describes the use of machine learning techniques to generate more accurate predictions to select the tab to be discarded. Selectively discarding tabs in this manner can improve memory management while also providing a better user experience.

User Activity Prediction For Device Screen And Power Management, Jon Napper, Omri Amarilio, Dan Erat, Jia Meng

Defensive Publications Series

To save battery, consumer devices, e.g., laptops, smartphones, etc., enter low-power states based on user inactivity. Typically, a device enters a low-power state after a fixed time has elapsed since the last user activity, e.g., keyboard or touchscreen activity. However, a fixed timeout does not work evenly for all users; for example, it is found that a substantial fraction of users reactivate the device immediately after the device screen is dimmed or the device has entered sleep state. This disclosure describes machine learning techniques to predict the transition to a low-power state based on user activity patterns and the state …
