Security By Obfuscating Data Across Non-Adjacent Memory Locations, Aaron Vaage Aug 2020

Security By Obfuscating Data Across Non-Adjacent Memory Locations, Aaron Vaage

Defensive Publications Series

The bytes that make up a data primitive (e.g., float, integer, etc.) are stored in adjacent bytes and in known order, based on a computer's architecture. Storing data in adjacent bytes is required by the hardware in order to operate on them. Compilers, in an effort to improve cache efficiency, pack primitives together. This packing indirectly communicates the relationship between primitives. When reverse engineering code, an attacker can observe the state of data on the stack. Knowing how the data is structured makes this much easier. The most reliable structuring is knowing how primitives will be structured. This disclosure describes …

Topic Granularity Detection Based On Historical Distribution, Anonymous Aug 2020

Topic Granularity Detection Based On Historical Distribution, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

User generated hashtags are widely used on social media platforms, blogs, and community sites to annotate content and make it easily discoverable by humans and algorithms. Hashtags reflect the semantics of the content from the users’ points of view, in their own vocabulary. Detecting the relationship between hashtags is often a challenging problem. This disclosure describes techniques that leverage the historical distribution of topics in social media posts or other content to accurately detect candidates for higher level topics in a topical graph. A generalization score is calculated based on the observation that higher level topics typically have a long …

Seamless Model Flighting For On-Device Machine Learning Models, Anonymous Aug 2020

Seamless Model Flighting For On-Device Machine Learning Models, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

On-device machine learning models play a key role in applications such as virtual assistants, document scanners, photo editors, facial recognition applications etc. on modern smartphones and other devices by eliminating the dependency on network connectivity and delivering a consistent and satisfactory user experience. However, the embedded model architecture makes the task of flighting a new machine learning model challenging. In model flighting, a small portion of the user base is exposed to the new version of the model, while the rest of the user base continues to use the old version of the model that is already part of the …

System And Method For Detecting Infinite Signaling Loop In Hierarchical Nrf Deployments, Ravi Shekhar, Ameo Ghosh, Shantanu Bhate Aug 2020

System And Method For Detecting Infinite Signaling Loop In Hierarchical Nrf Deployments, Ravi Shekhar, Ameo Ghosh, Shantanu Bhate

Defensive Publications Series

For larger deployments, where multiple level of Network Function (NF) Repository Functions (NRFs) are deployed, the slightest misconfiguration could lead to an indefinite query loop between NRFs. The indefinite loop in the NRF query would mean repeated timeouts and/or failure of a service discovery request that a consumer had initiated to find a suitable producer. This could lead to signaling failure between a set of consumers and producers, which in turn can lead to Quality of Service (QoS) and Service Level Agreement (SLA) violations. A new Hypertext Transfer Protocol Version 2 (HTTP/2) header, Network Function (NF)-route-record, is proposed, which should …

Multiband Speaker Protection And Dynamic Excursion Control Of Audio Devices, Anonymous Aug 2020

Multiband Speaker Protection And Dynamic Excursion Control Of Audio Devices, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

If the excursion limit of the diaphragm of a speaker is exceeded, the speaker exhibits nonlinear behavior which manifests as distorted sound and degraded acoustic echo cancelation (AEC) performance. Moreover, if a speaker is driven too hard, the resulting excessive heat can damage the voice-coil and speaker. While the aforementioned problems are present in speakers of all sizes, these become more acute for smaller, portable speakers, e.g., as used in smartphones, smart speakers, micro-speaker, wearable devices, etc.

This disclosure describes techniques to simultaneously protect the speaker and achieve an optimum, multi-band audio experience by modeling the speaker, dynamically adjusting the …

Audio Glasses With Variable Resistance Speaker Mesh, Anonymous Aug 2020

Audio Glasses With Variable Resistance Speaker Mesh, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

Audio glasses have built-in speakers along their side arms and earpieces. The distance between the speakers and the ear canal depends on the user’s head size which can vary across individuals. It is therefore difficult to deliver a consistent audio performance across people with varying head sizes. This disclosure describes techniques that adapt the total sound energy incident upon the ear canal so that a consistent audio performance is delivered regardless of head size. The techniques work by varying the number of active sound ports, by incorporating a speaker mesh of variable sound resistivity, and by generating a uniform sound …

Audio/Video Quality Measurement, Anonymous Aug 2020

Audio/Video Quality Measurement, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

Referential measurement tools that are used to measure video quality are typically very sensitive to synchronization and scaling issues that occur when video captured at a recipient device is out of synchronization with a source video and/or is scaled, e.g., to a different aspect ratio. When the captured video has such differences from the source video, conventional referential measurement techniques produce erroneous results. This disclosure describes techniques to process captured video to account for scaling effects and to synchronize captured video with source video. Referential measurement can then be performed with greater accuracy. A synchronization measurement technique is also described.

Adapting Delivery Of Virtual Assistant Responses That Include Private Information, Victor Carbune, Matthew Sharifi Aug 2020

Adapting Delivery Of Virtual Assistant Responses That Include Private Information, Victor Carbune, Matthew Sharifi

Defensive Publications Series

Some queries to a virtual assistant may seek information specific to that particular user. In some of these instances, the query and/or the response may contain information that the user considers to be private. In such cases, if a virtual assistant delivers the response in the form of audio, such delivery can potentially reveal the user’s private information to others who might be in the vicinity, close enough to hear the spoken response from the virtual assistant. This disclosure describes techniques that automatically adjust response delivery by a virtual assistant whenever a user’s voice query and/or the information in response …

Validation Of Media Item Accuracy During Content Delivery, Anonymous Aug 2020

Validation Of Media Item Accuracy During Content Delivery, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques for validating media item accuracy before a media item is provided for rendering on a user device.
