Better Text Compression Using A Large Language Model, D Shin
Better Text Compression Using A Large Language Model, D Shin
Defensive Publications Series
Conventional compression techniques for text are based on typical frequencies of individual letters within the text, independent of higher-level semantics. This disclosure describes a compression scheme for text data in which a conventional coder/decoder (codec) is augmented with an additional semantic codec to achieve greater compression and throughput. The additional semantic codec can be implemented with a pre-trained large language model (LLM). Text data is first input to a semantic coder for semantic-based compression. Codes within the codebook are reranked based on selective erasure by the encoder LLM. Once the codebook is established, portions within the text that can be …

Defensive Publications Series
Techniques are presented herein that support the controlled onboarding of switches that are arranged in a daisy chain or hierarchical topology. Aspects of the presented techniques support a deterministic Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)-based Internet Protocol (IP) address assignment based on the location of a client or device, thus making possible, and allowing the necessary control for, a hop-by-hop DHCP assignment paradigm. Further aspects of the presented techniques leverage elements of a zero-touch provisioning (ZTP) process in support of the onboarding of devices in a hierarchical topology.

Text Mining And Summarization Technique – Tracing The Color Code, Hp Inc
Defensive Publications Series
The idea presented in this paper is related to a technique which when applied to a text search on a text document, in our case, a technical document with instructions for manufacturing lines, provides more relevant search results. Documentation in a manufacturing process is essential for traceability, change management, quality, and process control. A typical product manufacturing process requires a lot of technical and process documents to be maintained and these are updated and circulated throughout the manufacturing life cycle. With varying formats and natural language expressions used in these documents, the engineers’ task of summarizing precise information to carry …

Self-Healing For Paper Amount Metering Systems, Hp Inc
Self-Healing For Paper Amount Metering Systems, Hp Inc
Defensive Publications Series
Paper Amount Metering Systems (also called Media Stack Height Measurement, in the specific case of Cut Sheet Trays), rely on some form of sensing system, that interacts either directly, or indirectly, with the amount of paper present for the Media Source, be it Roll, or Cut Sheets. The most critical function of such Metering Systems is to be able to give advanced warning, that media is about to run out (which is known as Low-on-Paper (LoP) or Low-Remaining-Paper-On-Roll), rather than the more legacy ability to sense Out-of-Paper (OoP). This is especially useful for remote printing cases, where users are not …

Display Brightness Based Camera Parameter Control For Selfie Capture In Darkness, Navinprashath, Ruben Velarde, Jerry Wu, Jay Ryu, Gaurav Malik
Defensive Publications Series
When a user in a dark room captures a selfie image or video using a front camera of a device, the display brightness can impact the captured image or video. Oscillations can occur due to a feedback loop between the image captured by the camera which when displayed on the device screen causes changes in display brightness. This disclosure describes techniques to automatically estimate the impact of display illumination on the face of a subject and slow down convergence. Per the techniques, exposure and/or white balance parameters for the camera are estimated using display illumination (brightness), depth (distance of the …

Smartphone Semi-Unlock By Grip Authentication, Michael Xuelin Huang
Defensive Publications Series
Viewing notifications on a smartphone or other device either requires the user to unlock their device or allow notification delivery on the device lock screen. Delivery of notifications on the lock screen, while convenient, can potentially leak user information. Self-Contained Testable Ar Glasses Sub-Module, Geoff Gudgeon, Jaehong Choi, Matthew Valente, Daniel Effinger
Defensive Publications Series
Designers of AR glasses are faced with packaging challenges. Packaging constraints may force optical components to be aligned at the top level of assembly or some sort of final alignment may be required at the highest level. This causes the display to not be testable or sealed until the device is almost fully assembled. This disclosure describes a fully self-contained testable module that includes an entire see-through stack and integrated display for augmented reality glasses. The module is sealed from the environment, preserving the performance as it is shipped and integrated into the AR glasses, and delivered to the customer. …

Augmented Reality Glasses That Accommodate A Wide Range Of Ophthalmic Prescriptions, Geoff Gudgeon, Lloyd Holland, Jaehong Choi, Thuy Nguyen, Josh Tiffin
Defensive Publications Series
Traditional eyewear frames are designed to accommodate a wide range of prescriptions. This includes the ability to include strong corrective lenses of significant thickness. However, augmented reality (AR) glasses with integrated displays can be much more constrained in terms of thickness, weight, and mechanical features since they have to accommodate a much larger number of components. As a result, traditional eyewear lens installation methods and features may not be feasible in AR glasses. This disclosure describes an ophthalmic lens edge profile and frame construction that minimizes mass and volume. The lens edge combined with the frame construction that includes an …

Dual Isolation To Protect Fragile Lightguide In Augmented Reality Eyewear, Geoff Gudgeon, Lloyd Holland, Denis Lahaie, Jaehong Choi
Defensive Publications Series
Lightguides are used in augmented reality (AR) devices to redirect light to the user's eye. Lightguides are manufactured by singulating dense glass wafers into a large, flat, and thin component that spans the entire clear aperture of the lens. Such lightguides have relatively little protection under a drop or shock load. This disclosure describes a design for AR eyewear in which the fragile component of AR eyewear is protected through two separate layers of isolation from the global deformation and strain experienced under a drop test. A rigid carrier within the outer frame acts as a first layer of isolation …
