broken issue as the display panel is rotated at 0~180 degrees.

Hardware-Controlled Bootable Drive Switching For Segregated Computing Experiences, Hp Inc Jul 2018

Hardware-Controlled Bootable Drive Switching For Segregated Computing Experiences, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

Computing devices are frequently used for multiple applications – a user might share a device for work

and personal computing. This sharing creates a wealth of data security vulnerabilities; the actions

performed on a device when used for personal computing may compromise sensitive corporate data.

Complete separation and isolation of the data location will eliminate any vulnerability of this data. A

computing device with two physical drives and a hardware toggle switch will promote more separation

between business and personal use by isolating data, while sharing the same hardware. This toggle switch

will allow the user to switch between bootable …

Biometric Enabled Proximity-Based User Authentication, Varun S. Rao, Teng Song Jul 2018

Biometric Enabled Proximity-Based User Authentication, Varun S. Rao, Teng Song

Defensive Publications Series

Today, if a user wants to access a device such as kiosks, public computers, and other shared devices, e.g., smart speakers, etc. for transient or periodic user, the user still has to sign into the device, often entering their username and password. The login process can be cumbersome and poses a security risk to the user’s account. This disclosure describes user authentication of host devices based on a combination of user biometrics and user proximity. Upon detection of the presence of a host device by a user’s mobile device, an unauthenticated connection, over channels such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, is …

Emotion-Suffused Messaging, Emmanuel Arriaga Jul 2018

Emotion-Suffused Messaging, Emmanuel Arriaga

Defensive Publications Series

One well-recognized problem with messaging is the lack of emotional context. In face-to-face or audio/video communication, nuance is communicated via body language, syllable stress, etc. There are currently no provisions for such expression in messaging. This can lead to confusion or disconnects between participants in a messaging conversation. Some of this disconnect is ameliorated by the use of emojis or other expressive elements. However, such elements have to be deliberately inserted by a participant in their messages.

This disclosure presents techniques that detect, with user permission and consent, the emotional context of a message sender. When the context is reliably …

Wi-Fi Rate Selection Using Machine Learning Models, Jerome Poichet Jul 2018

Wi-Fi Rate Selection Using Machine Learning Models, Jerome Poichet

Defensive Publications Series

When a Wi-Fi device tries to connect to access points, it picks a channel, rate, and a particular access point (AP) out of a potentially large number of selections. Different selections result in different quality of user experiences, e.g., as measured by throughput and latency.

In many circumstances, the device has a past history of connecting to various access points in or near its current location. With user permission, this disclosure uses trained machinelearning models and the past history to select an optimal channel, rate, and access point. The selections made using this technique can result in superior throughput, latency, …

The computer system can identify and activate controls in the document, such as a “show more” button, that cause additional content to be requested and inserted into the document, initiate scrolling operations that trigger loading of additional content into the document, etc. Described techniques allow a device to automatically and efficiently obtain a more complete version …

Bi-Directional Floating Belt Tensioner, Hp Inc Jul 2018

Bi-Directional Floating Belt Tensioner, Hp Inc

Defensive Publications Series

A low cost, bi‐directional, compact, low tension belt tensioner was needed for a material supply station.

This design allows for maximum pulley wrap angle that is consistent between clockwise and counter

clockwise operation. This design is compact and low cost. It allows for maximum torque transmission

from the drive motor to the belt while adding minimal tension to the drive belt above the load that is

being rotated. This allows for the key advantages of a smaller drive motor and least wear and tear on

the system.

Automated Marketplace For Sponsored Content, N/A Jun 2018

Automated Marketplace For Sponsored Content, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

Alongside traditional media channels, a new influencer marketing channel has emerged over the past several years. This channel comprises individual personalities and content providers that provide standalone or integrated sponsored content as part of their overall online presence. This sponsored content can be on online video-sharing, podcast, messaging, and other platforms. Advertising purchases for such online content providers are typically executed as direct deals, in which an advertiser or agency reaches out to the content provider to arrange the sponsored content. Given the proliferation of influencer marketing globally, such reliance on direct deals causes inefficient spend across providers. This disclosure …

Displaying Advertisements In Video Clips, Catherine Cardinal, Cliff Chin Ngai Sze Jun 2018

Displaying Advertisements In Video Clips, Catherine Cardinal, Cliff Chin Ngai Sze

Defensive Publications Series

On video-sharing platforms, users access some video clips primarily for audio rather than video content. In such video clips, the display is idle or otherwise possibly uninteresting to the viewer. The techniques of this disclosure apply machine learning to detect if the visual portion of a video clip is likely not of interest to the user. If the visual portion detected to not be of interest to the user, permission is sought from the user to insert a visual ad into the clip while audio continues playing unchanged. If user permission is obtained, ads are inserted in portions of video …

Heterogeneous Wireless: Dual Lora-Nb-Iot Redundant Connectivity, Patrick Wetterwalk, Pascal Thubert, Eric Levy-Abegnoli

Defensive Publications Series

LoRa refers to a digital wireless data communication technology that enables very-long-range transmissions with low power consumption. Narrowband Internet-of-Things (NB-IoT) refers to a lower power standard focusing on indoor coverage. By combining LoRa and NB-IoT technologies, a low-energy device may receive the benefit of NB-IoT throughput, while consuming an amount of power similar to LoRa. The embodiments presented herein emulate a LoRa device over a NB-IoT network using a virtual gateway.

Power usage of a device can be reduced by using LoRa and waking up NB-IoT on demand. A device may use LoRa as long as LoRa meets expected delivery …

Thin Profile And Waterproof Usb-C Connector, Michael Webb, David Rosen

Defensive Publications Series

In the currently available form, integrating a Universal Serial Bus Type C (USB-C) receptacle into a device affects the device thickness and forces the device to have large display borders. This disclosure enables provision of a USB-C receptacle in a thin profile device underneath a display stack. The techniques, as disclosed herein, eliminate the outer shell of the USB-C receptacle and use the primary enclosure of a connected device, e.g., a phone, as the outer shell. An O-ring, attached to a ground shield/shell of the USB-C receptacle, interfaces with the primary enclosure of the connected device to maintain a waterproof …
