Security By Obfuscating Data Across Non-Adjacent Memory Locations, Aaron Vaage
Security By Obfuscating Data Across Non-Adjacent Memory Locations, Aaron Vaage
Defensive Publications Series
The bytes that make up a data primitive (e.g., float, integer, etc.) are stored in adjacent bytes and in known order, based on a computer's architecture. Storing data in adjacent bytes is required by the hardware in order to operate on them. Compilers, in an effort to improve cache efficiency, pack primitives together. This packing indirectly communicates the relationship between primitives. When reverse engineering code, an attacker can observe the state of data on the stack. Knowing how the data is structured makes this much easier. The most reliable structuring is knowing how primitives will be structured. This disclosure describes …

Seamless Model Flighting For On-Device Machine Learning Models, Anonymous
Seamless Model Flighting For On-Device Machine Learning Models, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
On-device machine learning models play a key role in applications such as virtual assistants, document scanners, photo editors, facial recognition applications etc. on modern smartphones and other devices by eliminating the dependency on network connectivity and delivering a consistent and satisfactory user experience. However, the embedded model architecture makes the task of flighting a new machine learning model challenging. In model flighting, a small portion of the user base is exposed to the new version of the model, while the rest of the user base continues to use the old version of the model that is already part of the …
System And Method For Detecting Infinite Signaling Loop In Hierarchical Nrf Deployments, Ravi Shekhar, Ameo Ghosh, Shantanu Bhate
System And Method For Detecting Infinite Signaling Loop In Hierarchical Nrf Deployments, Ravi Shekhar, Ameo Ghosh, Shantanu Bhate
Defensive Publications Series
For larger deployments, where multiple level of Network Function (NF) Repository Functions (NRFs) are deployed, the slightest misconfiguration could lead to an indefinite query loop between NRFs. The indefinite loop in the NRF query would mean repeated timeouts and/or failure of a service discovery request that a consumer had initiated to find a suitable producer. This could lead to signaling failure between a set of consumers and producers, which in turn can lead to Quality of Service (QoS) and Service Level Agreement (SLA) violations. A new Hypertext Transfer Protocol Version 2 (HTTP/2) header, Network Function (NF)-route-record, is proposed, which should …

Automatically Deploying Connected And Centrally-Managed Retail Demo Devices, Steven Dawson, Chris Letnick, Joshua Levasseur, Monica De Armond, Aron Halil
Defensive Publications Series
Manufacturers of electronic devices have thousands of demonstration (demo) devices deployed in retail environments across the world. Deploying connected retail demo devices across third-party retailers is expensive, time-consuming, unscalable, and subject to human error. This disclosure describes mechanisms for automatically deploying connected and centrally-managed demo devices at retail locations. Wireless network credentials are pre-registered with a device manufacturer and included in a configuration file that is imaged onto a demo device. Upon power on, the demo device automatically searches for and connects to a retailer Wi-Fi network. The device sends heartbeats to a centralized dashboard to enable geolocating and monitoring. …

Defensive Publications Series
A wearable computing device (e.g., a smart watch), referred herein as a “wearable device” or “device,” is described that utilizes contextual signals to predict when to toggle between a power savings mode (e.g., “Sleep Mode”), where one or more lower power processors control functionality of the device, and a higher power mode, where one or more higher power processors control functionality of the device. The wearable device may predict, based on contextual signals, when the user may not require full functionality of the wearable device and switches to the power savings mode. For example, the user may not require full …
Adapting Delivery Of Virtual Assistant Responses That Include Private Information, Victor Carbune, Matthew Sharifi
Adapting Delivery Of Virtual Assistant Responses That Include Private Information, Victor Carbune, Matthew Sharifi
Defensive Publications Series
Some queries to a virtual assistant may seek information specific to that particular user. In some of these instances, the query and/or the response may contain information that the user considers to be private. In such cases, if a virtual assistant delivers the response in the form of audio, such delivery can potentially reveal the user’s private information to others who might be in the vicinity, close enough to hear the spoken response from the virtual assistant. This disclosure describes techniques that automatically adjust response delivery by a virtual assistant whenever a user’s voice query and/or the information in response …

Estimating Wait Times And Determining Optimal Routes At Retail Outlets, N/A
Estimating Wait Times And Determining Optimal Routes At Retail Outlets, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
Making a purchase at a grocery store or waiting for a table at a restaurant often entails waiting in a line. While stores are overcrowded at certain times or on certain days, at other times, stores can be relatively empty. This situation is worsened under pandemic conditions: for example, the outbreak of the Covid-19 disease has necessitated the closure of many businesses and enforcement of a six-feet social distance between customers of those businesses that are open. Longer wait times are inconvenient and put people at greater risk of exposure.
This disclosure describes techniques that enable customers to estimate wait …

Content Policy Violation Detection Based On Semantic And Syntactic Image Matching, Anonymous
Content Policy Violation Detection Based On Semantic And Syntactic Image Matching, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure describes a two-stage adversarial defense framework for the detection of policy violating content in online content platforms. Deep learned semantic features as well as pixel-level features of an input image are utilized to detect policy violating images. A two-stage template-matching based approach is utilized to detect policy violating images. In a first stage, semantic matching is utilized to search for a set of k-nearest neighbors of an input (new) query image from a previously labeled image database. Policy violating (positive) neighbors are identified from the set of the k-nearest neighbors. In a second stage, instance matching between the …
A Five-Metal Layered High-Speed Silicon Interposer With Low Insertion Loss And Cross-Coupling, N/A
A Five-Metal Layered High-Speed Silicon Interposer With Low Insertion Loss And Cross-Coupling, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
A silicon interposer is a widely used communications channel, or interconnect, between dies of integrated circuits. When used to connect high-speed application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and high-bandwidth memories (HBM), the traditional three-metal layered silicon interposer suffers from excessive insertion loss, cross-talk, and inter-symbol interference. Communications at the requisite speed, e.g., 3 Gbps or more, is unfeasible.
This disclosure describes techniques of optimal dimensioning and placement of traces within a five-metal layered silicon interposer to achieve a robust interposer communications channel with low insertion loss, cross-talk, and inter-symbol interference. ASIC-HBM communications speed of up to 3.6 Gbps is supported with use …

Augmenting Navigational Guidance By Incorporating Local Regulations In Effect, Victor Carbune, Matthew Sharifi
Defensive Publications Series
Users often use map applications to get directions to travel from one location to another. Sometimes, temporary local guidance from public authorities that is in effect at the time of travel may impact availability and use of specific transportation modes. Currently, users must already know of such short or long term guidance from local authorities or must seek it separately because it is typically not available within the map application that provides travel directions. This disclosure describes techniques to provide travel directions with routing options and optimization that are based on criteria other than distance and travel time. Such additional …
