Collecting Power Consumption Metrics From Operationally Inaccessible Networks, Marcelo Yannuzzi, Carlos M. Pignataro, Roque Gagliano, Francisco Sedano Crippa

Defensive Publications Series

Operational traffic, such as management plane traffic carrying power consumption metrics from a device in the field, is often inaccessible to a device’s vendor. Techniques are presented herein that support a novel mechanism for encoding power consumption metrics in standard communication protocols such as, for example, domain name system (DNS) requests. Aspects of the presented techniques ensure the atomicity of self-contained messages, as well as the confidentiality and integrity of the metrics that are sent to the corresponding vendors. Further aspects of the presented techniques support selectable levels of anonymity during the exporting of the above-described metrics. For example, selectable …

Application-Aware Latency-Based Optimization For Rep Rings, Dave Zacks, Robert Barton, Thomas Szigeti, Barry Qi Yuan Jun 2023

Application-Aware Latency-Based Optimization For Rep Rings, Dave Zacks, Robert Barton, Thomas Szigeti, Barry Qi Yuan

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are presented herein that support a method for prescriptively discovering optimal places on a resilient Ethernet protocol ring for which to break a loop on a per-virtual local area network (VLAN) basis. In an operational technology (OT) setting, traffic often stays within a ring and is peer-to-peer (P2P) in nature. Consequently, it is useful to break the loop in places that optimize performance and do not force P2P traffic to go the "long way" around a ring. The presented techniques encompass a method for discovering where the best place to break the loop is on a per-VLAN basis.

Application-Driven Optimized Sla-Aware Path Selection For Collaboration Applications, Dave Zacks, Paul B Giralt, Prapanch Ramamoorthy, Thomas Szigeti

Defensive Publications Series

Currently, applications are at the mercy of a network’s infrastructure for the selection of a path within a network environment where more than one path exists between a source and a destination. Too often, the network infrastructure elements are unaware of an application’s requirements, or are aware of them in only a very rudimentary way. This situation is particularly dire for collaboration applications, which often have the most stringent requirements for path characteristics including delay, jitter, and packet loss. Techniques are presented herein that move the point of control for path selection to a collaboration application through a lightweight, in-band …
