Teixint Superilles: A Grassroots Project Of Participatory Design For Inclusive Public Spaces, Clément Rames, Mireia Lozano Carbassé, Lea Karrasch, Roger Guilemany Casas
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper presents the Teixint Superilles project which developed participatory design activities to create more inclusive public space. Our hypothesis was that when citizens have the opportunity to participate in placemaking activities, they gain not only greater awareness of their environment, but also a sense of agency over their city. Through a series of workshops, we have been experimenting with diverse methodologies for civic participation while confronting a wide range of participants with topics of gender, functional diversity, cross-generational inclusivity, and sustainability. We facilitated workshops in three different environments, thus reaching a wide range of participants: a public park, a …

This conversation allowed mothers and non-mothers to connect with per- sonal stories and universal struggles during a supportive virtual moment. Some con- venors are design researchers, practitioners, students, and/or educators. This conver- sation also served as a space for designers to reflect on the role and responsibility of design in interrogating reproductive care systems in their current context. The goal of the convenors is to move toward and promote co-designing a preferable feminist fu- ture for mothers. There are few spaces like maternal health care and the experience of motherhood that would benefit simply through qualitative data collection, storytell- ing, …
Remaking The Social: Dialogical, Creative, And Co-Operative Capacities Of Thought At Hull House, Matthew Delsesto
Remaking The Social: Dialogical, Creative, And Co-Operative Capacities Of Thought At Hull House, Matthew Delsesto
DRS Biennial Conference Series
While social research is often positioned as a way to reflect social realities or de-velop theories for specialized fields through analyzing empirical evidence, based on data that is extracted from communities, Jane Addams points to a different mode of inquiry. This chapter introduces the theories and practices of the Hull House as an iterative and experimental process of inquiry— creating new knowledge in and through action, in a process of facing down pressing social chal-lenges. In particular it uses examples from the Hull House— which involved the design of the working people’s social science club, exhibitions on the industrial condition, …

LiveSpace is a transdisciplinary work-integrated learning (WIL) design studio unit at Griffith University. The studio has worked on a broad spectrum of community engagement projects from its inception in 2014. Design staff mentor students in a scaffolded WIL environment allowing for authentic engagement with community, industry, government and not-for-profit groups for an enhanced student learning experience. As such, collaborative approaches to live projects are examined for potential benefits to learning and teaching, student engagement, and to the wider community. This paper provides an overview of the studio, outlines the team development phase and participant involvement, highlights two highly successful community …
Multispecies Cohabitation And Future Design, Stanislav Roudavski
Multispecies Cohabitation And Future Design, Stanislav Roudavski
DRS Biennial Conference Series
How should humans live with animals and other forms of life? Could responses to this question improve the health and wellbeing of the biosphere? This paper argues that design researchers ought to engage nonhuman lifeforms as collaborators: informants and co-designers, or clients and users. Inspired by recent design challenges involving birds, bats and trees, this paper positions emancipatory multispecies cohabitation as a goal that can alleviate ongoing biodiversity losses and human-wildlife conflicts, in cities and beyond. It opens an interdisciplinary conversation by translating emerging scholarship in ethics, politics, and aesthetics to a narrative about desirable more-than-human cultures. This discussion has …

Transitions towards sustainability need for radical and structural changes in the social, cultural and organisational dimensions in addition to technological innovations and infrastructural changes. Sustainability transitions have been a research and practice agenda for several decades. Currently, a new area in design for sustainability field is emerging that bridges the theories and practices of sustainability transitions with theory, education and practice of design. In this paper, we investigate the emergence and evolution of this new area through a literature review of selected publications that represent the current approaches of integrating the theories of sustainability transitions and design. We provide an …

Transition Design: Teaching And Learning, Stacie Rohrbach, Molly Steenson
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Central to the development of transition design is its foundation in higher education. The theoretical basis that informs the practice of transition design develops from an emergent process comprised of hypotheses, theory, and testing in educational settings. These approaches—which focus on tackling specific, complex, placed-based challenges—must be tailored to address the nature of specific contexts and the varied learning of student cohorts and their respective needs. This paper investigates the value and thoughtful integration of transition design practices into design education and proposes curricula for undergraduate design students. It outlines methods and tools that are utilized in our teaching, describes …
Design Justice: Towards An Intersectional Feminist Framework For Design Theory And Practice, Sasha Costanza-Chock
Design Justice: Towards An Intersectional Feminist Framework For Design Theory And Practice, Sasha Costanza-Chock
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design is key to our collective liberation, but most design processes today reproduce inequalities structured by what Black feminist scholars call the matrix of domination. Intersecting inequalities are manifest at all levels of the design process. This paper builds upon the Design Justice Principles, developed by an emerging network of designers and community organizers, to propose a working definition of design justice: Design justice is a field of theory and practice that is concerned with how the design of objects and systems influences the distribution of risks, harms, and benefits among various groups of people. Design justice focuses on the …
Redesigning Governance – A Call For Design Across Three Orders Of Governanc, Tanja Rosenqvist, Cynthia Mitchell
Redesigning Governance – A Call For Design Across Three Orders Of Governanc, Tanja Rosenqvist, Cynthia Mitchell
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Designers are increasingly engaged in solving large-scale societal issues and the interest in the potentially activist role of design is growing. These new roles call for judicious approaches to designing and, importantly, for designers to be critically aware of how their work influences, not only our physical, but also our social worlds. This paper explores how designers can take part in rethinking governance structures by facilitating a process of questioning and re-imagining how, for example, public services are governed and importantly - by whom. This involves articulating people’s day-to-day experiences of governance and making explicit the institutional arrangements and the …

Design as a discipline has evolved and is expanding its impact from individual physical objects and spaces to experiences and organizations. An emerging question is 'how will the increasing influence of design impact the future of design education and create value for its stakeholders as well as for the discipline of design?' Probably a more critical question is 'how can or should design education prepare future designers for this expanding sphere of design influence?'Design education is at the crossroads and faces an uncertain future. some say “If design is to live up to its promise it must create new, enduring …

Many designers today (including ourselves) are experimenting with how their practice can engage in meaningful ways with the complexity of pressing social and environmental issues. Being very much concerned with the politics and power relations that run through such issues, in this paper we will explore what points of orientation the framework of the ‘commons’ and that of ‘community economies’ – seen from an autonomist and feminist Marxist perspective – can offer when working on socially and politically engaged projects. We mobilise these two frameworks as possible entry points through which eco-socially just modes of reproducing livelihoods can be fostered. …

The traditional provision of public services needs to be transformed, and this transformation includes ceasing to consider users as passive recipients of services. Instead, the process of service development should be opened up to more participatory methods, whereby users and providers, working together, transform the way in which the welfare state is conceived and services designed and delivered. In achieving conditions of wellbeing, societies face very complex problems, particularly such groups as the elderly, who depend most heavily on the social care services. The paper describes the research developed, as part of the major project of MA Sustainable Design in …

A “Community of Practice” is defined as a spontaneously formed group that has common goals and discusses how to solve them. This paper presents an exploratory research on how to assist these groups through a design method. In this research, we applied a design-synthesized method named KIT DESIGN (ROSSETTO, 2013) to a group of cyclists in Porto Alegre, Southern Brazil. This group was chosen because it is part of a worldwide movement that has been dealing with contemporary mobility culture problems in cities where mobility needs to be rethought in terms of more sustainable practices. During the research some valid …

This study aims to develop a method of retrieving indigenous knowledge, cultural identity, and artistic quality in local craft through design activities. Taking bamboo basketry product as the case study, this research selected Bangchaocha, a sub-district in Ang Thong province, as a representative of Thailand’s rich culture and established crafts village. The community has recently encountered a problem seen in many craft communities throughout Asia – one that sees the loss of their traditional craft identity due to foreign traders placing large orders for generic products that showcase neither indigenous craft knowledge nor traditional craftsmanship. This study aims to show …

Ethics And Social Responsibility: Integration Within Industrial Design Education In Oceania, Mariano Ramirez
Ethics And Social Responsibility: Integration Within Industrial Design Education In Oceania, Mariano Ramirez
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Industrial design schools have typically functioned as training grounds in which future designers are skilled into becoming proficient creators of more ‘stuff’, many of which prove to be unnecessary and unsustainable. Several research publications examine the integration of sustainability in industrial design education, but most of these focus on ecological aspects, especially because environmental improvement has been the focus of government policymaking and product innovation in the last two decades or so. The social pillar of sustainability has received less attention; in fact there is no accepted definition in the design industry about what constitutes this area. This research investigates …

Transitions Heuristics In The Pursuit Of Well-Being: Situating Interactive Products And Services In Transitions, Fatih Kursat Ozenc
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Transitions in people’s lives take shape in the roles they enact, and the environments they inhabit. In these transitions, people encounter the paradox of changing and unchanging happenings, occurring simultaneously at multiple channels with differing magnitudes, and through immediate and long-term interactions. In this multiplicity of dimensions, transitions bring complexity while they emerge, throughout their occurrence, and while they resolve. Dealing with this complexity oftentimes results in stress, decline in emotional and social qualities of experiences. Interactive products and service systems play an important role in transitional experiences, by providing support for people to hold on to during the transitions. …

SEED Foundation undertakes action research to develop new, innovative ways for design to most effectively contribute towards sustainable development. The research that follows is not the result of academic investigations but rather, a culmination of 20 years direct professional involvement in the sector. By aligning current political goals with cutting edge design thinking and good business sense, this paper presents our ideas on how more designers can profitably solve social and environmental problems through their work. It specifically investigates how the still emerging discipline of service design, in dealing more with relationships and experiences than material objects, offers inherent social …

Design And Sustainable Development: What Is The Contribution That Design Can Make? A Case Study Of The Welsh Woollen Industry, Angharad Thomas
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper reports on ongoing research examining the contribution that design can make to sustainable development, that is:
'… development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs' (WCED, 1987, p. 43) It outlines the need for global sustainable development and its adoption into global and governmental policies. Both of the key concepts of design and sustainable development are discussed, as is the relationship between them (Spangenberg 2001, Walker 2006). The contradictions between design as a stimulator of consumption and its potential contribution to sustainable development are examined. The …
