This is the third annual Biblical studies issue, and it emphasizes trends in synoptic exegesis. The first three articles deal with the key question in gospel studies today: How does one explain the marked similarities and differences among the synoptic gospels? The question itself is not new to the church. Tatian the Syrian wrestled with it in the second Christian century. He prepared a single gospel, which effectively concealed all the differences. But preachers soon discovered that they were preaching the gospel according to Tatian rather than one or the other of the inspired, canonical gospels.

Martin Chemnitz' Views On Trent: The Genesis And The Genius Of The Examen Concilii Tridentini, Arthur Carl Piepkorn Jan 1966

Martin Chemnitz' Views On Trent: The Genesis And The Genius Of The Examen Concilii Tridentini, Arthur Carl Piepkorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

"In recent centuries one or the other of [the] pillars supporting the Tridentine system have appeared to tremble, but as a whole the system has always survived the various crises which had only brought about certain individual degenerations. Beginning with 1958-1959, through a whole concourse of historical and spiritual factors, and certainly under an impulse of the Holy Spirit, the [Roman] Catholic Church (and more generally the entire Christian world) abandoned the Tridentine system on all fundamental themes. The brief intervening time cannot distract us from the global dimensions and the definitive significance of this abandonment."

This issue is the second in the Biblical Studies series, a series first suggested by the Commission on Church Literature and subsequently endorsed by the general leadership of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. This issue is a contribution toward a fuller understanding of the nature of the Word of God. All the articles contribute to this thematic study. One's appreciation of God's written Word can be so controlled by specific problems, like the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch, that the full grandeur of this book can disappear behind a carefully built fence of minor concerns. The contributors to this …

The Hermeneutical Dilemma: Dualism In The Interpretation Of Holy Scripture, Martin H. Franzmann Sep 1965

The Hermeneutical Dilemma: Dualism In The Interpretation Of Holy Scripture, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod ought to have a special interest in hermeneutical questions. It is surely a great gift of God to our church that the authority of Scripture is for us still an unquestioned authority, that in all theological discussion in our midst it can be assumed that all participants are the '"humble readers" of whom Luther speaks, that each man '"trembles at the speech of God and continually cries, Teach me! Teach me!'" Of all church bodies we perhaps are, by the grace of God, the least corroded by the '"acids of modernity," the most "naive" in our …

Church, Ministry And Mission Fields, Maynard Dorow Sep 1964

Church, Ministry And Mission Fields, Maynard Dorow

Concordia Theological Monthly

The ministry is currently the focus of considerable attention on nearly all Christian fronts. On the American scene this attention has been occasioned in part by the general shortage of clergy. More than this, however, questions are being raised concerning the role of the pastor and the relevance of the ministry as presently conceived for our industrial and urban society.

Hoyer On History, Herbert T. Mayer Jul 1963

Hoyer On History, Herbert T. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The remarks in this article are primarily based upon the course in church history as he taught it in 1942 and on his two-semester elective in the history of the Lutheran Reformation. Since he was, above all, a student of Luther, it is in this area that his influence upon Lutheran clergymen has been most profound.

The Function Of Historical Theology In The Theological Training Program, Walter W. Oetting Jul 1963

The Function Of Historical Theology In The Theological Training Program, Walter W. Oetting

Concordia Theological Monthly

What is the function of historical theology? Since many of you students are not sold on the value of studying history, to say the least, we need to know at the very outset why it is important for theological students to study the history of the church.

The Fourth Gospel Yesterday And Today, John W. Montgomery Apr 1963

The Fourth Gospel Yesterday And Today, John W. Montgomery

Concordia Theological Monthly

In this paper a comparative study will be made of the work of four Johannine interpreters who are widely separated both in time and in theological approach: Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560), Luther’s irenic associate, rightly designated the "preceptor of Germany"; Aegidius Hunnius (1550-1603), an uncompromising representative of early Lutheran confessional orthodoxy; Father Marie-Joseph Lagrange (1855-1938), one of the greatest Roman Catholic Biblical scholars of the twentieth century; and Charles Kingsley Barrett, an English Methodist, who since 1958 has served as professor of divinity at Durham University, and who is the author of a highly reputed commentary on the Greek text of …

Eros And Agape In The Thought Of Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola, John Warwick Montgomery Dec 1961

Eros And Agape In The Thought Of Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola, John Warwick Montgomery

Concordia Theological Monthly

Anders Nygren's remarkable work, Agape and Eros, whose German edition appeared in Carl Stange's monographic series, "Studies of the Apologetics Seminar," and which opposes the interpretations both of Harnack and of Scholz, received from the outset high commendation as a classic theological production. In his review of the English translation of Part Two of Agape and Eros Sydney Cave wrote: 'Dr. Nygren's fresh and suggestive study puts many an old problem in a new light and in particular shows how false were some of Harnack's brilliant generalizations on the history of early Christian thought and piety…. It is some years …

An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922, Delbert R. Hillers Aug 1958

An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922, Delbert R. Hillers

Concordia Theological Monthly

Since shortly after World War I there have been a great many publications and a lively interest in the field of Old Testament studies known as Old Testament theology or Biblical theology of the Old Testament. This surge of interest came after a period of almost complete neglect of this discipline. This paper will attempt to analyze the causes of the resurgence of Old Testament theology, to understand the various methods or approaches of major scholars in the field, and to analyze the results of these methods.

Religion In The Public Schools, Carl S. Meyer Feb 1957

Religion In The Public Schools, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

To the traditional three R's in education many would place as the first a fourth R - Religion. Some maintain that Religion should be taught only in the schools of the church; some say that Religion or spiritual values should be taught in the schools of the state. Others have urged that the fourth R in modern education should be Right Relations or Human Relations. The debate touches on the question of basic objectives in education and involves the question of the relationship between church and state. It embraces the questions: Do the functions of the state include the teaching …

The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg Aug 1955

The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

Archaeology is, furthermore, of great value because it relates exegesis to historical facts. Christianity is a historical religion, based upon events and experiences which transpired in history. Allegorical and symbolical interpretations often ignore the historical background of the Christian religion and lead to aberrations in religious thought. While the New Testament as a supernatural revelation harbors many elements transcending historical verification, it does nevertheless contain much material which can be determined by historical study. Thus Dana asserts: "There is no feature of the process of interpretation more important than the reconstruction of the historical situation out of which a given …

Preaching On The Holy Spirit: A Study Of Luther's Sermons On The Evangelical Pericopcs, Martin E. Marty Jun 1955

Preaching On The Holy Spirit: A Study Of Luther's Sermons On The Evangelical Pericopcs, Martin E. Marty

Concordia Theological Monthly

"In our day the Holy Spirit suffers great ignominy," sighed Luther, in reference to current doctrinal misunderstanding. "In our day the Holy Spirit suffers great ignominy," might be a contemporary comment on neglect of the worship of, and witness to, the Holy Spirit. It has become almost a rubric to bemoan this neglect on Whitsunday, the third great feast of the church year, but this complaint is often followed by a tendency to contribute to the neglect and the ignominy through silence from the pulpit, as far as a living concern for the work of the Holy Spirit is concerned, …

The Relationship Of The Church To The National Culture In America, Ernest B. Koenker Nov 1954

The Relationship Of The Church To The National Culture In America, Ernest B. Koenker

Concordia Theological Monthly

As one considers the cultural complex of America today, there are a number of questions which might present themselves to the Christian living under the Word. What are the values which underlie our national culture, and is there any sense in which these are being absolutized today in some kind of Messianism? Can one say that the Christian churches in America, or the Lutheran Church, have profoundly shaped our culture, or have the churches themselves been thoroughly shaped by the culture? In view of the loss or muffling of a dynamic Christian witness in many of the American denominations, what …
