Vicarious Satisfaction: A Study In Ecclesiastical Terminology, Henry W. Reimann
Vicarious Satisfaction: A Study In Ecclesiastical Terminology, Henry W. Reimann
Concordia Theological Monthly
There is no dispute in modern theology on the importance of the work of Christ. Biblical, Reformation, and confessional studies have combined to recall theology to the importance of Christology and soteriology. Even the recent emphases on ecclesiology and eschatology, stemming from our ecumenical and apocalyptic times, have not been unproductive of more vital soteriological emphases.

The Conquest Of Canaan According To Joshua And Judges, Walter R. Roehrs
The Conquest Of Canaan According To Joshua And Judges, Walter R. Roehrs
Concordia Theological Monthly
Many Old Testament scholars find two opposing views regarding the Israelite conquest of Canaan in the books of Joshua and Judges. In the former the 12 tribes are represented as achieving full possession of the Promised Land through a few swift victories resulting in immediate and full occupation. In the Book of Judges, on the other hand, the process is described as gradual, beset by many reverses, and incomplete for a long time. The first, it is said, is an idealized picture; the latter is more true to the facts.
It is the purpose of this study to examine these …

In this issue we are continuing the observance of the 400th anniversary of the death of Philip Melanchthon. To the articles appearing in the August issue of our journal, we are adding two more which likewise were read as a commemorative symposium at Concordia Seminary on April 2-21 of this year. In calling these articles to the attention of our readers, we have chosen to let Melanchthon speak to us directly from bis Loci communes, selecting some of his 33 theses, which conclude his treatise on law and Gospel.
Galatians 2:1-10 And The Acts Of The Apostles, Robert G. Hoerber
Galatians 2:1-10 And The Acts Of The Apostles, Robert G. Hoerber
Concordia Theological Monthly
No doubt the chief crux in the comparison of Paul's Epistle to the Galatians with the Acts of the Apostles is the relating of Gal. 2:1-10 to the account of Acts. To equate Gal. 2:1-10 with Acts 15 raises such serious difficulties in the judgment of many scholars that they have proposed various explanations.

The Unity Of Scripture, Walter R. Roehrs
The Unity Of Scripture, Walter R. Roehrs
Concordia Theological Monthly
The unity of Scripture is an article of faith. This unity is also an objective fact that exists apart from faith and does not become a fact merely when I believe it (existentialist theology). But it is more than an arithmetic problem. It is not a mere unit sum at which we arrive by adding a number of given parts and fractions into a whole. This means that it is more than the addition of demonstrable facts and figures.

In his De doctrina Christiana St. Augustine wrote: Certain scholars have rendered great service by providing the student of the Sacred Scriptures with interpretations of all Hebrew, Syrian, Egyptian, and other foreign expressions and names that are introduced without further explanation by the sacred writers. Eusebius through his historical investigations developing out of a concern for the divine books has also left us an indispensable tool. These men have done their work so that Christians need not search through many authors for information on some small point. But there is further need of someone with the proper qualifications to produce, …

In our day there is nothing sensational in the remark that the authors of our New Testament documents often quote the Septuagint version rather than the Hebrew text in their use of the Old Testament. In fact, as long ago as 1782 Randolph came to the conclusion that 119 of the 239 actual quotations from the Old Testament occurring in the New were taken from the Septuagint. This was almost 50 years before Doepke's Hermeneutik der neutestamentlichen Schriftsteller ( 1829) clearly demonstrated the extensive methodological agreements between New Testament authors and rabbinic writers, thereby laying the groundwork for our contemporary …

Aids To Bible Study: The Septuagint-Its History, Frederick W. Danker
Concordia Theological Monthly
"Gentlemen, have you a Septuagint?" Ferdinand Hitzig, eminent Biblical critic and Hebraist, used to say to his class. "If not, sell all you have, and buy a Septuagint." Current Biblical studies reflect the accuracy of his judgment. This and the next installment are therefore dedicated to the task of helping the Septuagint come alive for Biblical students who may be neglecting its contributions to the total theological picture, for clergymen who have forgotten its interpretive possibilities, and for all who have just begun to see how new things can be brought out of old.

A Lutheran Contribution To The Present Discussions On The Lord’S Supper, Hermann Sasse
A Lutheran Contribution To The Present Discussions On The Lord’S Supper, Hermann Sasse
Concordia Theological Monthly
The Lord's Supper has again become one of the main issues among the churches of Christendom as well as within individual denominations. This is the result of two movements which, though deeply rooted in the 19th century, have shaped the life of all Christendom since the beginning of this century: the Liturgical and the Ecumenical Movement. Since the deepest motive underlying both is what has been called "the awakening of the Church in the souls," future church historians may regard them as branches of one great movement which, like all great movements in the Western Church (Reformation, Pietism, Rationalism, etc.), …

It is regrettable that Hebrew is gradually fading out of the academic picture. Seminaries are decreasing their requirements in this area, and its study is being left more and more to the elective inclinations of the student. To the remnant in Israel, however, this chapter in Aids to Bible Study is dedicated in the hope that it may encourage some to return to Zion and exhilarate others as they stand on the ramparts and catch the vision of fresh and exciting interpretive possibilities in their Hebrew texts.

An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922 (Concluded), Delbert R. Hillers
An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922 (Concluded), Delbert R. Hillers
Concordia Theological Monthly
The sole contribution of the Netherlands to modern Old Testament theology is the Hoofdlijnen der Theologie van het Oude Testament of Th. C. Vriezen, professor of Old Testament at the University of Groningen. Opposing both the "mummifying process" of absolutizing the Old Testament as God's Word and the opposite fault of making it only man's word, Vriezen calls for a "theological Biblical criticism," and wishes in his book to bridge the gap between scientific Old Testament study and its use for practical, religious purposes. As is indicated by the title, Hoofdlijnen, he restricts his discussions to matters of major importance …

The Eschatology Of Acts And Contemporary Exegesis, Robert H. Smith
The Eschatology Of Acts And Contemporary Exegesis, Robert H. Smith
Concordia Theological Monthly
For half a century New Testament exegesis has stood at the center of a storm over eschatology, and the eye of this storm is not all calmness. Two different exegetes skillfully and deliberately lay open the same passage of Scripture and arrive at conclusions that collide head on. Scholars disagree not only concerning what the New Testament says but especially about what the New Testament means in its eschatological statements.

An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922, Delbert R. Hillers
Concordia Theological Monthly
Since shortly after World War I there have been a great many publications and a lively interest in the field of Old Testament studies known as Old Testament theology or Biblical theology of the Old Testament. This surge of interest came after a period of almost complete neglect of this discipline. This paper will attempt to analyze the causes of the resurgence of Old Testament theology, to understand the various methods or approaches of major scholars in the field, and to analyze the results of these methods.

Since its first edition in 1898 Eberhard Nestle's Novum Testamentum Gaece has become standard equipment for students of the New Testament. The 23d edition (1957). edited jointly by his son Erwin Nestle and Kurt Aland, who is to succeed Nestle as the editor, has erased some of the blemishes in its predecessors and includes the readings of Papyrus Bodmer 66.

The Dumb Prophet, Walter R. Roehrs
The Dumb Prophet, Walter R. Roehrs
Concordia Theological Monthly
The prophets were God's spokesmen. He sent them to speak. They were not to be "dumb dogs." But in the case of the prophet Ezekiel, unique among his fellows in a number of other respects, God made it a part of his assignment to be dumb and not to speak.

Aids To Bible Study Concordances, Frederick W. Danker
Concordia Theological Monthly
The recent publication of Nelson's Complete Concordance to the Revised Standard Version of the Bible focuses attention on Biblical concordances in general as a necessary tool for vital interpretation. This brief study aims to present a historical survey and answers in some small measure questions frequently asked by students: What is a good concordance? How can I use a concordance profitably?

For our orientation it will be advisable briefly to survey the passages in which the word "freedom" or "free" occurs. It is early in the Epistle that Paul first touches on this topic (2:3-5). In the historical sketch of his career he relates what happened when he and Barnabas, accompanied by Titus, went to Jerusalem.

The close relationship between "tasting the good Word of God" and "the powers of the age to come" is quite evident. The reason is, perhaps, as Davidson maintains, that the consummate blessings of these powers lie in the future. Therefore, by necessity, they must be "combined with the good word of promise." That is undoubtedly true. In addition, one might say that this "good word of promise" is itself that very power by which God establishes communion with men and thereby projects the blessings of that which is to come into that which now is. Cf. Rom. 1:16.
